Beschreibung: The data sets originates from the weekly sampling events (MOSAiC time series) during the MOSAiC campaign. Water samples from the CTD/Rosette were taken and fixed in Hexamin- buffered Formalin. 50ml subsamples were counted using the Utermöhl method. Counts were carried out with a Zeiss inverted microscope. The data set comprises bulk parameters with cell abundances (as cells/l) for the most abundant protist groups. In addition cell numbers for the toxic pennate diatom are provided separately

Beschreibung: These data represent five high-latitude sites studied in the PAGE21 project (https://www.page21.eu): Samoylov, Kytalyk, Abisko, Zackenberg and Bayelva. Please see the linked manuscript for details of the sites. These are meteorological driving data, which were prepared using observations from the sites combined with reanalysis data for the grid cell containing the site. For the period 1901-1979, Water and Global Change forcing data (WFD) were used (Weedon et al., 2011). This has half-degree resolution for the whole globe at 3-hourly time resolution from 1901 to 2001. For the period 1979-2014, WATCH-ForcingData-ERA-Interim (WFDEI) was used (Weedon, 2013). For the time periods in which observed data were available, correction factors were generated by calculating monthly biases relative to the WFDEI data. These corrections were then applied to the time series from 1979 to 2014 of the WFDEI data. The WFD before 1979 were then corrected to match these data and the two datasets were joined at 1979 to provide gap-free 3-hourly forcing from 1901 to 2014. Local meteorological station observations were used for all variables except snowfall, which was estimated from the observed snow depth by treating increases in snow depth as snowfall events with an assumed snow density. See linked manuscript for more details.

Beschreibung: The data comprise meters composite depth (mcd) versus component declination, inclination and maximum angular deviation (MAD) values for natural remanent magnetization (NRM) from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1306 drilled on the crest of the Eirik Drift (SW Greenland) in 2272 m water depth. The component magnetizations were determined from stepwise alternating field demagnetization of NRM and measured on a pass-through u-channel magnetometer (see Channell et al., 2014). Planktic oxygen isotope (δ18O) and relative paleointensity (RPI) data are used in tandem to generate an age model for the last 1 Myr. For the 1-1.5 Ma interval, the age model is based on RPI alone due to insufficient foraminifera for isotope analyses. Utilizing RPI and δ18O in tandem allows recognition of low-δ18O "events" prior to glacial Terminations I, III, IV, V, VII, VIII, IX and X, that are independently supported by radiocarbon dates through the last deglaciation, and are attributed to local or regional surface-water effects. At Site U1306, Quaternary sedimentation rates (mean ~15 cm/kyr) are elevated during peak glacials and glacial onsets, and are reduced during interglacials, in contrast to the pattern at Site U1305 in 3460 m water depth at the distal toe of the drift, 191 km SW of Site U1306. The contrasting sedimentation-rate pattern appears to hold for the entire ~1.5 Myr record. The slackening and/or shoaling (due to lowered salinity) of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) during glacial intervals coincided with greater sediment supply to Site U1306 whereas the deepening, and possibly increased vigor, of the DWBC during interglacial intervals boosted sediment supply to Site U1305.

Beschreibung: The data comprise meters composite depth (mcd) versus volume susceptibility (x10-3 SI) and anhysteretic susceptibility from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1306 drilled on the crest of the Eirik Drift (SW Greenland) in 2272 m water depth. The anhysteretic magnetization (ARM) was measured on a pass-through u-channel magnetometer and the volume susceptibilities were measured on a pass-through (u-channel) susceptibility bridge (see Channell et al., 2014). Planktic oxygen isotope (δ18O) and relative paleointensity (RPI) data are used in tandem to generate an age model for the last 1 Myr from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1306 drilled on the crest of the Eirik Drift (SW Greenland) in 2272 m water depth. Beschreibung: The data comprise meters composite depth (mcd) versus a relative paleointensity (RPI) proxy from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1306 drilled on the crest of the Eirik Drift (SW Greenland) in 2272 m water depth. The RPI proxy is natural remanent magnetization (NRM) normalized by anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM). The NRM/ARM paleointensity proxy was calculated as a slope over the 20-60 mT peak field demagnetization range. Also listed are the correlation coefficients (r) representing the definition of the slopes. NRM and ARM were measured on a pass-through u-channel magnetometer (see Channell et al., 2014). Planktic oxygen isotope (δ18O) and RPI data are used in tandem to generate an age model for the last 1 Myr from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1306 drilled on the crest of the Eirik Drift (SW Greenland) in 2272 m water depth.

Beschreibung: Composite sediment core OD1507-03TC-41GC-03PC was collected at an average water depth of 976 m in outer Petermann Fjord during The Petermann 2015 Expedition to Petermann Fjord and adjacent Hall Basin in Nares Strait, northern Greenland. Previous results showed that the splice covers large parts of the Holocene, from the present to 6,900 cal yrs BP (Reilly et al. 2019). The core was sampled approximately every 5 cm for sea-ice related biomarker and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses and approximately every 10 cm for foraminiferal abundance counts. Where enough material was available, the depth of foraminiferal samples match the depth of biomarker samples. Sea-ice related biomarkers (IP25, HBI II, Brassicasterol, Cholesterol, Dinosterol, Campesterol, and β-sitosterol) where extracted using saponification (5% potassium hydroxide (KOH) in methanol (MeOH):H2O (9:1, v/v); 70°C, 1 h) followed by extraction of the non-saponifiable lipids into hexane (3 x 2 mL). After sample purification the different biomarkers were analysed on an Agilent 7890B GC fitted with an HP-5ms Ultra Inert column (30 m x 250 μm x 0.25 μm) coupled to a 5977A series mass selective detector and equipped with a Gerstel multipurpose sampler (MPS) at Aarhus University. TOC measurements and analysis of the carbon isotopic composition of the TOC were performed on 10 mg of the same sample material as for biomarker analyses. The samples were treated with 35% HCl prior to analyses, to remove inorganic carbon. The stable isotope δ13Corg and % wt TOC were measured using a continuous-flow IsoPrime IRMS coupled to an Elementar PyroCube elemental analyser at the Aarhus AMS Centre (AARAMS), Aarhus University, Denmark. Samples for foraminiferal abundance counts were wet sieved at 63 µm and counted wet, submerged in a 'storage' solution of 70 % distilled water and 30 % ethanol with baking soda to preserve fragile calcareous and agglutinated tests. A wet splitter was used when necessary to achieve a count of at least 200-300 benthic foraminifers.

Beschreibung: Precipitation that falls as snow at high elevations is one of the principal water sources for the downstream areas in the dry Andes of Central Chile. The last decade was especially dry, with most years showing below-normal annual precipitation - the so-called central Chile megadrought. Together with increased water consumption, the dry conditions have led to considerable water stress. People living in high mountain areas are especially vulnerable to this water scarcity, which raises their awareness and interest in meteorological observations. This dataset contains measurements of fresh snow and rain obtained in the citizen science project Vecinos de las Nieves (Spanish for “snow neighbors”) - a collaboration between scientists and community members who live, work or study in the mountainous sector (above 1100 m asl.) in the Andes mountains of the Coquimbo region, Chile (29°S to 32°S). Since 2018, following each snowfall during the austral Winter (May to August), the volunteers have measured the physical-chemical characteristics of the snow on the ground. Since 2021, the volunteers have also collected rainfall with a manual rain gauge. In total, 21 precipitation events have been documented, with a maximum snow depth of 292 mm at the highest observation site (3110 m asl.). In addition, 25 fresh snow samples from 9 snowfall events have been collected and successfully processed, to derivate stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes, whose values are in line with the global meteoric line. The program Vecinos de las Nieves has generated new scientific understanding of snow and rain processes during the four winter periods, as well as connected isolated communities in the pursuit of science, and has highlighted the importance of local knowledge and interdisciplinary research in understanding snow dynamics and water availability in this area. Most participants have observed drier conditions in their environment during the last years, with fewer snow events compared to previous years, showing growing concern about the water availability in the future.

Beschreibung: Clearance rates of two batches (1 and 2) of cultured G. childressi mussels filtering phytoplankton. Batch 1 mussels ('small': 51 ± 3 mm SD, 'large': 77 ± 4 mm SD) received either Rhodomonas or Nannochloropsis cells. Batch 2 mussels from were cultured under different nutritional treatments (CH4: 'M', algae + CH4: MA', only algae: 'A'). The measurement of clearance rates of batch 2 G. childressi cultured in the 'A' treatment (without CH4 supply) was conducted twice: once while mussels were placed in CH4-enriched seawater, and, subsequently, once without CH4.

Beschreibung: Magnetic polarity stratigraphies from ODP Leg 177 'high resolution' sites indicate Brunhes sedimentation rates in the 12-25 cm/kyr range, with a trend of decreasing sedimentation rates with increasing age. Magnetite is the principal remanence-carrying mineral. Downcore alteration of magnetite and authigenic growth of iron sulfides introduces a high coercivity diagenetic remanence carrier (pyrrhotite). The change in pore water sulfate with depth in the sediment tends to be in step with the decrease in magnetization intensity, indicating the link between sulfate reduction and magnetite dissolution. Shipboard pass-through magnetometer data are generally very noisy due to a combination of weak magnetization intensities, drilling-related core deformation, and the influence of authigenic iron sulfides. Post-cruise progressive demagnetization of discrete samples aids the magnetostratigraphic interpretation, as these measurements are less influenced by low magnetization intensities and drilling-related deformation. The magnetostratigraphic interpretations provide much-needed calibration for biostratigraphic events in the high latitude southern oceans. Apart from the ODP Hole 745B (Kerguelen Plateau), published Plio-Pleistocene magnetostratigraphies from ODP sites in the Southern Ocean are poorly constrained. For this reason, we compare interpolated ages of 11 radiolarian events and one diatom event that occur at Hole 745B and Leg 177 sites.

Beschreibung: The state of preservation of natural gas hydrate samples, recovered from 6 sites drilled during ODP Leg 204 at southern summit of Hydrate Ridge, Oregon Margin, has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cryo-scanning-electron-microscopy (cryo-SEM) techniques. A detailed characterization of the state of decomposition of gas hydrates is necessary since no pressurized autoclave tools were used for sampling and partial dissociation must have occurred during recovery prior to the quench and storage in liquid nitrogen. Samples from 16 distinct horizons have been investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at HASYLAB/ Hamburg. A full profile fitting analysis (“Rietveld method”) of synchrotron XRD data provides quantitative phase determinations of the major sample constituents such as gas hydrate structure I (sI), hexagonal ice (Ih) and quartz. The ice content (Ih) in each sample is related to frozen water composed of both original existing pore water and the water from decomposed hydrates. Hydrate contents as measured by diffraction vary between 0 and 68 wt.% in the samples we measured. Samples with low hydrate content usually show micro-structural features in cryo-SEM ascribed to extensive decomposition. Comparing the appearance of hydrates at different scales, the grade of preservation seems to be primarily correlated with the contiguous volume of the original existing hydrate; the dissociation front appears to be indicated by micrometer-sized pores in a dense ice matrix.

Beschreibung: At Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1090 (lat 42°54.8'S, long 8°54.0'E) located in a water depth of 3702 m on the Agulhas Ridge in the sub-Antarctic South Atlantic, ~300 m of middle Eocene to middle Miocene sediments were recovered with the advanced piston corer (APC) and the extended core barrel (XCB). U-channel samples from the 70-230 meters composite depth (mcd) interval provide a magnetic polarity stratigraphy that is extended to 380 mcd by shipboard whole-core and discrete sample data. The magnetostratigraphy can be interpreted by the fit of the polarity-zone pattern to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) augmented by isotope data and bioevents with documented correlation to the GPTS. Three normal-polarity subchrons (C5Dr.1n, C7Ar.1n, and C13r.1n), not included in the standard GPTS, are recorded at Site 1090. The base of the sampled section is correlated to C19n (middle Eocene), although the interpretation is unclear beyond C17r. The top of the sampled section is correlated to C5Cn (late early Miocene), although, in the uppermost 10 m of the sampled section, a foraminifer (Globorotalia sphericomiozea) usually associated with the Messinian and early Pliocene has been identified. 87Sr/86Sr, d13C, and d18O values measured on foraminifera, including the d18O and d13C shifts close to the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, support the correlation to the GPTS. For the interval spanning the Oligocene/Miocene boundary, benthic d13C, d18O, and 87Sr/86Sr records from Site 1090 can be correlated to isotope records from ODP Site 929 (Ceara Rise), providing support for the recently-published Oligocene/Miocene boundary age (22.92 Ma) of Shackleton et al.

Beschreibung: The Owen Ridge south of Oman represents oceanic crust that was uplifted by compressional tectonic forces in the early Miocene. Build-out of the Indus Fan led to deposition of a thick sequence of turbidites over the site of the Ridge during the late Oligocene and early Miocene. Early Miocene uplift of the Ridge led to a pelagic cap of nannofossil chalks. Two short sequences of turbidites from the pre- and syn-uplift phases were chosen for detailed grain size analysis. The upper Oligocene section at Site 731 is composed of thin (centimeter-decimeter scale) graded mud turbidites separated by relatively thick (decimeter-meter scale) intervals of homogeneous, non-bioturbated clayey siltstones. These finer intervals are unusually silt-rich (about 60%) for ungraded material and were probably deposited as undifferentiated muds from a series of turbidity current tails. By contrast, the lower Miocene section at Site 722 is comprised of a sequence of interbedded turbidites and hemipelagic carbonates. Sharp-based silt turbidites are overlain by burrow-mottled marly nannofossil chalks. The Oligocene sequence may have accumulated in an overbank setting on the middle fan - the local topographic position favoring frequent deposition from turbidity current tails and occasional deposition from the body of a turbidity flow. Uplift of the Ridge in the early Miocene led to pelagic carbonate deposition interrupted only by turbidity currents capable of overcoming a topographic barrier. Further uplift eventually led to entirely pelagic carbonate deposition.

Beschreibung: We present a 5.3-Myr stack (the ''LR04'' stack) of benthic d18O records from 57 globally distributed sites aligned by an automated graphic correlation algorithm. This is the first benthic delta18O stack composed of more than three records to extend beyond 850 ka, and we use its improved signal quality to identify 24 new marine isotope stages in the early Pliocene. We also present a new LR04 age model for the Pliocene-Pleistocene derived from tuning the delta18O stack to a simple ice model based on 21 June insolation at 65 N. Stacked sedimentation rates provide additional age model constraints to prevent overtuning. Despite a conservative tuning strategy, the LR04 benthic stack exhibits significant coherency with insolation in the obliquity band throughout the entire 5.3 Myr and in the precession band for more than half of the record. The LR04 stack contains significantly more variance in benthic delta18O than previously published stacks of the late Pleistocene as the result of higher resolution records, a better alignment technique, and a greater percentage of records from the Atlantic. Finally, the relative phases of the stack's 41- and 23-kyr components suggest that the precession component of delta18O from 2.7-1.6 Ma is primarily a deep-water temperature signal and that the phase of d18O precession response changed suddenly at 1.6 Ma.

Beschreibung: Approximately one thousand sediment samples from ODP Site 1123 on the Chatham Rise, east of New Zealand, have been examined for inorganic elemental concentrations. ODP 1123 provides a record of sediment drift deposition under the Deep Western Boundary Current, the main inflow of deep water to the Pacific Ocean since the Early Oligocene, though a major hiatus spans the late Early Oligocene to the Early Miocene. Normalisation of the elemental concentrations by aluminium was used to allow for the effects of variable carbonate dilution. The elemental ratios were used as proxies for sediment composition and as palaeoceanographic indices. The samples were collected at a resolution designed to sample adequately any variation in elemental ratios at the scale of the Milankovitch orbital cycles. The sampled intervals span the Early Oligocene, Early Miocene, mid-Miocene and Late Pleistocene to Recent. Anomalous Si/Al, K/Al, Ti/Al values in the upper Pleistocene section, often associated with horizons of low carbonate, are attributed to tephras derived from North Island. Not all of the tephras detected geochemically had been detected visually in the cores. A total of 37 tephra events between 1.17 Ma BP and the present are recognised based on this and the shipboard investigations. The tephra events cluster at intervals of approximately 326 000 years (326 ka) perhaps due to variations in eruption frequency on North Island and/or to variations in the regional palaeowind intensity and direction. In the Late Pleistocene to Recent P/Al (inferred nutrient availability), percent calcium carbonate (%CaCO3) and Ba/Al (inferred productivity) varied regularly at a period of 40 000 years with these factors lagging minimum global ice volumes (interglacials). During the mid-Miocene CaCO3, Ba/Al, P/Al and Si/Al all gradually increased with %CaCO3 and P/Al showing regular 138 000-yr cyclicity and Ba/Al showing 44-ka cyclicity. Inferred productivity (Ba/Al) may have been rising in association with increasing nutrient availability (P/Al) at the same time as increased vigour of the Deep Western Boundary Current that was connected to a period of rapid ice-sheet growth in Antarctica. In the Early Miocene P/Al and Si/Al were much higher than subsequently and both %CaCO3 and P/Al exhibited 131 000-yr cycles. By far the highest nutrient levels and inferred productivity at this site apparently occurred during the Early Oligocene as revealed by long-term changes in P/Al and Si/Al. A progressive rise in K/Al, but stable Ti/Al from the Early Oligocene to the Recent probably indicates increased proportions of illite in the clay mineral fraction of the drift sediments caused by increased flux of debris from the Southern Alps.

Beschreibung: Gas hydrate samples from various locations in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) differ considerably in their microstructure. Distinct microstructure characteristics coincide with discrete crystallographic structures, gas compositions and calculated thermodynamic stabilities. The crystallographic structures were established by X-ray diffraction, using both conventional X-ray sources and high-energy synchrotron radiation. The microstructures were examined by cryo-stage Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). Good sample preservation was warranted by the low ice fractions shown from quantitative phase analyses. Gas hydrate structure II samples from the Green Canyon in the northern GOM had methane concentrations of 70-80% and up to 30% of C2-C5 of measured hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons in the crystallographic structure I hydrate from the Chapopote asphalt volcano in the southern GOM was comprised of more than 98% methane. Fairly different microstructures were identified for those different hydrates: Pores measuring 200-400 nm in diameter were present in structure I gas hydrate samples; no such pores but dense crystal surfaces instead were discovered in structure II gas hydrate. The stability of the hydrate samples is discussed regarding gas composition, crystallographic structure and microstructure. Electron microscopic observations showed evidence of gas hydrate and liquid oil co-occurrence on a micrometer scale. That demonstrates that oil has direct contact to gas hydrates when it diffuses through a hydrate matrix.

Beschreibung: We report relative paleointensity proxy records from four piston cores collected near the Agulhas Ridge and Meteor Rise (South Atlantic). The mean sedimentation rate of the cores varies from 24 cm/kyr to 11 cm/kyr. The two cores with mean sedimentation rates over 20 cm/kyr record positive remanence inclinations at 40-41 ka coeval with the Laschamp Event. Age models are based on oxygen isotope data from three of the cores, augmented by radiocarbon ages from nearby Core RC11-83, and by correlation of paleointensity records for the one core with no oxygen isotope data. The relative paleointensity proxy records are the first from the South Atlantic and from the high to mid-latitude southern hemisphere. Prominent paleointensity lows at ?40 ka and ?65 ka, as well as many other features, can be correlated to paleointensity records of comparable resolution from the northern hemisphere. The records are attributable, in large part, to the global-scale field, and therefore have potential for inter-hemispheric correlation at a resolution difficult to achieve with isotope data alone.

Beschreibung: We present benthic isotope stratigraphies for Sites 1236, 1237, 1239, and 1241 that span the late Miocene-Pliocene time interval from 6 to 2.4 Ma. Orbitally tuned timescales were generated for Sites 1237 and 1241 by correlating the high-frequency variations in gamma ray attenuation density, percent sand of the carbonate fraction, and benthic d13C to variations in Earth's orbital parameters. The astronomical timescales for Sites 1237 and 1241 are in agreement with the one from Atlantic Site 925/926 (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 154). The comparison of benthic d18O and d13C records from the east Pacific sites and Atlantic Site 925/926 revealed a surprising clarity of the "41-k.y. signal" in d13C records and a remarkably good correlation between their d13C records. This suggests that the late Miocene-Pliocene amplitudes of obliquity-related d13C cycles reflect a magnitude of global response often larger than that provided by obliquity-related d18O cycles. At Site 1237, the orbitally derived ages of Pliocene magnetic reversal boundaries between the base of Réunion and the top of Thvera confirm astronomical datings of the generally accepted ATNTS2004 timescale, except for the top of Kaena and the base of Sidufjall. Our astronomical age for the top of Kaena is about one obliquity cycle older. The base of Sidufjall appears to be about one precession cycle younger. The age models of Sites 1236 and 1239 were established by correlating their benthic d18O and d13C records directly to the orbitally tuned isotope record of Site 1241.

Beschreibung: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Sites U1302-U1303, drilled on the SE flank of Orphan Knoll (Labrador Sea), preserve a record of detrital layers and other proxies of hydrographic change that extend the record of ice-sheet/ocean interactions through most of the Brunhes Chron. The age model is built by tandem matching of relative paleointensity (RPI) and oxygen isotope data (d18O) from Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) to reference records, indicating a mean Brunhes sedimentation rate of 14 cm/kyr. Sedimentation back to marine isotope stage (MIS) 18 is characterized by detrital layers that are detected by higher than background gamma-ray attenuation (GRA) density, peaks in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) indicators for detrital carbonate (Ca/Sr) and detrital silicate (Si/Sr), and an ice-rafted debris (IRD) proxy (wt.% 〉106 µm). The age model enables correlation of Site U1302/03 to IODP Site U1308 in the heart of the central Atlantic IRD belt where an age model and a similar set of detrital-layer proxies have already been derived. Ages of Heinrich (H) layers H1, H2, H4, H5 and H6 are within ~2 kyr at the two sites (H0, H3 and H5a are not observed at Site U1308), and agree with previous work at Orphan Knoll within ~3 kyr. At Site U1308, Brunhes detrital layers are restricted to peak glacials and glacial terminations back to marine isotope stage (MIS) 16 and have near-synchronous analogs at Site U1302/03. Detrital layers at Site U1302/03 are distributed throughout the record in both glacial and most interglacial stages. We distinguish Heinrich-like layers associated with IRD from detrital layers marked by multiple detrital-layer proxies (including Ca/Sr) but usually not associated with IRD, that may be attributed to lofted sediment derived from drainage and debris-flow events funneled down the nearby Northwest Atlantic Mid-Ocean Channel (NAMOC). The prominent detrital layers at Sites U1302/03 and U1308 can be correlated to millennial scale features in the Chinese speleothem (monsoon) record over the last 400 kyr, implying a link between monsoon precipitation and Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) instability. The detrital-layer stratigraphy at Site U1302/03 provides a long record of LIS dynamics against which other terrestrial and marine records can be compared.

Beschreibung: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1308 (central North Atlantic) records paleomagnetic directional and relative paleointensity (RPI) variations for the last 1.5 Myr, in 110 m of the sediment sequence at a mean sedimentation rate of 7.3 cm/kyr. A detailed benthic oxygen isotope record was combined with RPI to produce an integrated, high-resolution magneto-isotopic stratigraphy for Site U1308. Apart from the well-known polarity reversals in this interval, the Punaruu excursion is recorded at 1092 ka and the Cobb Mountain Subchron in the 1182-1208 ka interval. The paleointensity proxies are determined as slopes of NRM versus ARM and NRM versus ARMAQ (ARM acquisition) with linear correlation coefficients to monitor the quality of the linear fit. The RPI record for Site U1308 is compared with the three other paleointensity records (one from the Western Equatorial Pacific and two from the North Atlantic) that cover the same time interval and have accompanying oxygen isotope records. The Match protocol of Lisiecki and Lisiecki (2002) is used to optimize the correlation of paleointensity records. Beginning with the original (published) age models for each record, the Match routine is used to optimize the RPI correlations to Site U1308, with checks to ensure compatibility with oxygen isotope records. Squared wavelet coherence (WTC) indicates significant improvement in RPI (and oxygen isotope) correlations after matching each RPI record to Site U1308, particularly for periods 〉 10 kyr. The level of coherence for the Atlantic RPI records and the lower resolution Pacific record implies synchronous global variability (at scales 〉 10 kyr) that can be attributed to the axial dipole geomagnetic field.

Beschreibung: We report the intercalibration of paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) and radiocarbon dates of two expanded postglacial sediment cores from geographically proximal, but oceanographically and sedimentologically contrasting settings. The objective is to improve relative correlation and chronology over what can be achieved with either method alone. Core MD99-2269 was taken from the Húnaflóaáll Trough on the north Iceland shelf. Core MD99-2322 was collected from the Kangerlussuaq Trough on the east Greenland margin. Both cores are well dated, with 27 and 20 accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates for cores 2269 and 2322, respectively. Paleomagnetic measurements made on u channel samples document a strong, stable, single-component magnetization. The temporal similarities of paleomagnetic inclination and declination records are shown using each core's independent calibrated radiocarbon age model. Comparison of the PSV records reveals that the relative correlation between the two cores could be further improved. Starting in the depth domain, tie points initially based on calibrated 14C dates are either adjusted or added to maximize PSV correlations. Radiocarbon dates from both cores are then combined on a common depth scale resulting from the PSV correlation. Support for the correlation comes from the consistent interweaving of dates, correct alignment of the Saksunarvatn tephra, and the improved correlation of paleoceanographic proxy data (percent carbonate). These results demonstrate that PSV correlation used in conjunction with 14C dates can improve relative correlation and also regional chronologies by allowing dates from various stratigraphic sequences to be combined into a single, higher dating density, age-to-depth model.

Beschreibung: Magnetostratigraphy has been serving as a valuable tool for dating and confirming chronologies of lacustrine sediments in many parts of the world. Suitable paleomagnetic records on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and adjacent areas are, however, extremely scarce. Here, we derive paleomagnetic records from independently radiocarbon-dated sediments from two lakes separated by 250 km on the southern central TP, Tangra Yumco and Taro Co. Studied through alternating field demagnetization of u-channel samples, characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions document similar inclination patterns in multiple sediment cores for the past 4000 years. Comparisons to an existing record from Nam Co, a lake 350 km east of Tangra Yumco, a varve-dated record from the Makran Accretionary Wedge, records from Lakes Issyk-Kul and Baikal, and a stack record from East Asia reveal many similarities in inclination. This regional similarity demonstrates the high potential of inclination to compare records over the Tibetan Plateau and eventually date other Tibetan records stratigraphically. PSV similarities over such a large area (〉3000 km) suggest a large-scale core dynamic origin rather than small scale processes like drift of the non-dipole field often associated with PSV records.

Beschreibung: A 30.5 m sediment core was recovered from the coastal lake Eilandvlei (EV13), which represents a unique high-resolution record of environmental change for southern Africa. For the establishment of a robust chronology, special emphasis was placed on the calibration of radiocarbon (14C) ages obtained from the dating of different material. However, the reliability of 14C ages can be problematic since coastal lakes interact with different source pools providing 14C-depleted ("old") carbon thus causing reservoir effects. The origin of old carbon affecting the EV13 samples was most likely sourced from the Indian Ocean. Two pre-bomb marine molluscan shells were therefore analysed to determine the regional marine reservoir offset (dR), with obtained dR values of 134 ± 38 and 161 ± 38 14C yrs providing the first available data for the south coast of South Africa. However, the application of the resulting average dRmean = 148 ± 27 14C yrs for the calibration of the entire EV13 record underestimates the variable reservoir effects throughout the Holocene. These were possibly caused by past changes in the connectivity between the present lake system and the ocean as well as a varying degree of upwelling in this area. To solve this problem, three sample pairs (each consisting of wood fragments and bulk organic sediment from the same core depth) were dated to calculate the variable past reservoir effects. This approach provided a median basal age of 8920 +200/-250 cal BP. Palaeomagnetic secular variation stratigraphy was used to corroborate the chronology for the topmost 1.5 m of the record (past millennium), thus providing the first Holocene sediment based inclination and declination data from South Africa.

The sites are Pinhay Bay to West Cliff, Lyme Regis (Dorset); St Audries Bay (Somerset); Quantocks Head (Somerset); St Marys Well Bay at Lavernock (Glamorgan); Southam Quarry, near Long Itchington (Warwickshire). Each data set includes: stratigraphic height; astronomically tuned time scale; composite time scale; vol MS (SI units); short eccentricity filter output; lithology of measurement; previously published bed number; ammonite biohorizon, ammonite subzone; ammonite zone. In the case of limestone nodules within light marl measurements are made through the limestone nodules if they constitute 50% or more of the section along the bedding planes. For horizons with widely spaced limestone nodules (〈 50% along bedding) light marl is measured instead. Volume MS measurement procedures are described by Weedon, Jenkyns and Page (2018). Astronomical tuning, filtering and the composite time scales are described by Weedon, Page and Jenkyns (2018).

Beschreibung: Paleohydrological data comprising pollen assemblages and leaf-wax hydrogen isotopes (δDwax) from paleolake sediments in the Qaidam Basin (China) provide evidence for a link between increased moisture availability on the Tibetan Plateau and global cooling during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. Notably, they document the persistence of humid and cold conditions during Marine Isotope Stages 24–22 (936–866 ka) suggesting that boundary conditions favorable for extended glaciation on the Tibetan Plateau first developed at ~900 ka. Our δDwax results indicate a strong influence of proximal (monsoonal) moisture sources during that glacial, in agreement with the intensification of the inter-hemispheric moisture transport resulting from Antarctic ice-volume increase at ~900 ka. The consistency of our results with other marine and terrestrial climate datasets suggests that extended glaciation on the Tibetan Plateau may have initiated ~500 ka earlier than previously assumed, implying that mid-latitude ice sheets actively contributed to global cooling during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.

Beschreibung: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site 303-U1308 (49° 53'N, 24° 14'W; water depth 3871 m) provides a record of magnetization directions, relative paleointensity (RPI), susceptibility and benthic stable isotope stratigraphy back to 3.2 Ma. The record since 1.5 Ma has been published (Channell et al., Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 274, 59-71, 2008). This paper deals with the interval from 1.3 Ma to 3.2 Ma (Early Pleistocene-Late Pliocene). The benthic oxygen isotope record in this interval can be correlated to marine isotope stages (MIS) 51 to KM2, with an apparent hiatus that removed MIS G1-G2, immediately below the Gauss-Matuyama boundary. The mean sedimentation rate for the 1.5-3.2 Ma period is 8.5 cm/kyr. The age model was built by correlation of the oxygen isotope record to the LR04 stack. Carbon isotope data imply the influence of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) during interglacials with influence of southern source waters during glacials throughout the period, but with more muted δ¹³C variations in the Gauss Chron. Apart from the expected polarity reversals, three magnetic excursions are recorded: Punaruu in MIS 31/32 at 1092 ka, Gilsa in MIS 54 at 1584 ka, and a newly recognized excursion labeled Porcupine (after the nearby Porcupine abyssal plane) in MIS G7 at 2737 ka. The ages of reversals at Site 303-U1308, on the LR04 time scale, are consistent with the current geomagnetic polarity timescale (GPTS) with the exception of the base of the Olduvai Subchron in MIS 73 at 1925 ka, 26 kyr younger than in the current GPTS. The RPI record at Site 303-U1308 is calibrated using the oxygen isotope age model, and combined with four other North Atlantic records to obtain a North Atlantic RPI stack for 1.2-2.2 Ma (NARPI-2200). For 2.2-3.2 Ma, no Atlantic RPI records other than Site 303-U1308 exist. The NARPI-2200 stack is compared with published RPI stacks: Epapis, Sint-2000 and PADM2M. The mean sedimentation rates of the North Atlantic sites in NARPI-2200 are greater (by about an order of magnitude) than most of the records incorporated in other stacks. The comparison of Pacific Epapis and NARPI-2200 yields an apparent lag for NARPI-2200 relative to Epapis, attributed the Epapis age model constructed by correlation of magnetic concentration parameters (a proxy for carbonate percentage) to a calibrated oxygen isotope record. The long RPI record from Site 303-U1308 yields a very similar mean value for the Brunhes and Matuyama virtual axial dipole moments (7.5 x 1022 A m²), implying no polarity bias for RPI as in Sint-2000 and PADM2M. The results strengthen the case that RPI can be used to improve global stratigraphic correlation, especially for sites with mean sedimentation rates up to several decimeters/kyr.

Beschreibung: Data of culturing two batches of G. childressi specimens for altogether 36 and 27 months, respectively. The deep-sea mussels of the first batch (208 specimens, "batch 1") were collected by E/V "Nautilus" using the ROV "Hercules" southwest of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico at station GC233 ("Brine Pool NR-1"; 2743.40760N, 9114.77980W) on 13 July 2014 at a depth of 650 m. At this site, cold and high-saline water seeps from the ocean floor and—due to the higher density—fills a "brine pool" which is surrounded by a G. childressi mussel bed (MacDonald et al. 1990). The mussels arrived at GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany) 14 d after being collected. The second batch of G. childressi (35 specimens, "batch 2") was collected by MSV "Ocean Intervention II" using the ROV "Global Explorer" northeast of the first site at station GC249 (27°43.72740N, 90°31.01400W) in 811 m depth on 18 June 2017. The mussels were transported within 4 d by ship and truck to the Fisher deep-sea lab at Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA. Here, the experimental animals were cultured in a recirculating seawater aquarium system (T = 8 °C, S = 34) that continuously received methane-saturated seawater. Seawater methane concentrations were not quantified during this time period. Subsequently, after 2 months, animals were shipped by plane in cooled jars (T = 5–8°C, S = 34) to GEOMAR (travel time 〈 24 h). There was no mortality during the transport of both batches.

Beschreibung: We present mid-Pliocene (4.3-2.6 Ma) benthic stable oxygen and carbon isotope data from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1092 (ODP Leg 177) drilled in the sub-Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean. The results are compared with the stable isotope results from nearby Site 704 (ODP Leg 114). Oxygen isotope data show that minimum values are about 0.5 per mil less than those of the Holocene, which is consistent with the results from Site 704, indicating only minor deglaciation of Antarctica during the studied interval. Oxygen isotope data from both Site 1092 and Site 704 are slightly higher relative to Pacific values during several intervals which could be related to the contribution of warm, saline North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Comparisons of benthic carbon isotope gradients between sites located in the North Atlantic, sub-Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean, and Pacific indicate that at times, the gradient between the Southern Ocean and the Pacific evolved differently than the Atlantic-Pacific gradient. This suggests that variations in NADW strength alone might not be responsible for the observed carbon isotope values in the Southern Ocean.

Beschreibung: We extend existing high-resolution Oligocene–Miocene proxy records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 154. The extended record spans the time interval from ~17.86 to 26.5 Ma. The data are age calibrated against a new astronomical solution that affords a re-evaluation of the intricate interaction between orbital (“Milankovitch”) forcing of the climate and ocean system, and the fidelity with which this forcing is recorded in oxygen and carbon stable isotope measurements from benthic foraminifera, and associated lithological proxy records of magnetic susceptibility, colour reflectance, and the measured sand fraction. Our records show a very strong continual imprint of the Earth's obliquity cycle, modulate in amplitude every ~41 ka, a very strong eccentricity signal in the carbon isotope records, and a strong, but probably local, imprint of climatic precession on the coarse fraction and magnetic susceptibility records. Our data allowed us to evaluate how the interaction of long, multi-million year beats in the Earth's eccentricity and obliquity are implicated in the waxing and waning of ice-sheets, presumably on Antarctica. Our refined age model confirms the revised age of the Oligocene–Miocene boundary, previously established by analysis of the lithological data, and allows a strong correlation with the geomagnetic time scale by comparison with data from ODP Site 1090, Southern Ocean.

Beschreibung: In 1998 Ocean Drilling Program Leg 181 off southwest New Zealand obtained cores from Site 1123 (41°47.2'S, 171°29.9'W; 3290 m water depth) on the Chatham Rise. Site 1123 sampled the North Chatham Sediment Drift, which is located between 169°W and 175°W at depths of 2200-4500 m (Carter, McCave, Richter, Carter, et al., 1999, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.181.2000). This site is located just north of the productive surface waters associated with the Subtropical Front. The cores provide a relatively complete record of sedimentation on the Chatham Drift back to the early Miocene and beyond a stratigraphic gap into the early Oligocene. Drift sedimentation is partly indicated by modern paleoceanographic observations and by extensive microfossil reworking throughout the recovered sediment (Carter and McCave, 1994, doi:10.1029/94PA01444; Carter, McCave, Richter, Carter, et al., 1999, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.181.2000). Approximately 1000 sediment samples from the lower Oligocene, lower Miocene, middle Miocene, and upper Pleistocene have been analyzed geochemically for elemental concentrations. The stratigraphic intervals sampled at 5- to 10-cm intervals are listed in Table T1. The elemental concentrations, normalized by aluminium concentrations, provide proxies for factors such as nutrient levels, siliciclastic and volcaniclastic sediment composition, and bottom-water redox conditions. This approach was prompted by successes with Miocene and Oligocene deep-sea sediment elemental ratios obtained from the Ceara Rise in the western equatorial Atlantic (Weedon and Shackleton, 1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.154.129.1997). The results for Ba/Al in the Pleistocene were discussed by Hall et al. (2001, doi:10.1038/35090552), and an interpretation of a selection of additional elemental ratios from all the stratigraphic intervals was provided by Weedon and Hall (2004, doi:10.1016/S0025-3227(04)00024-6). However, many components listed here, particularly the trace elements and rare earth elements, were not considered by Weedon and Hall (2004, doi:10.1016/S0025-3227(04)00024-6).

Samples were analyzed for ice-rafted debris (IRD [see Table T1]) and stable isotopes from benthic foraminifera [see Murphy et al., 2002, doi:10.1016/S0031-0182(01)00495-3]. Both analyses were performed on the same samples. Additional work was performed to identify the paleomagnetic stratigraphy. The analyzed samples range in age from about 2.6(?) Ma to 4.6 Ma, a time span that saw considerable global warmth, but witnessed overall global refrigeration and the transition to truly bipolar glaciations. IRD arrived frequently during the Early and early Late Pliocene, but only as 'background rafting' (occasional grains per sample). The first identifiable IRD above background rafting is associated with marine isotope stage (MIS) KM4 (~3.18 Ma). Successive IRD peaks become larger, the same pattern as noted at nearby Site 114-704. A very large peak near the top of the record, approximately 2.8 Ma, is considered to represent a hiatus. Peaks below 51.3 meters composite depth (mcd) coincide with positive excursions of the oxygen isotopic record, and with negative excursions of the carbon isotopic curve, a pattern also noted at Site 114-704. However, the reasonably large IRD peak at 51 mcd (tentatively identified with MIS G11) coincides with a positive excursion on the carbon isotopic curve and negative excursion on the oxygen isotopic curve. This relationship suggests a northern hemisphere interglacial, rising sea level, destabilization of the Antarctic margin, and delivery of Antarctic icebergs to the Southern Ocean. Such a mechanism has recently been suggested by Kanfoush et al. (2000, doi:10.1126/science.288.5472.1815) for latest Pleistocene stadial/interstadial oscillations. Here we suggest that such a mechanism may have been in place on glacial/interglacial time scales as early as the Late Pliocene.

Beschreibung: We report geomagnetic directional paleosecular variation, relative paleointensity proxies and oxygen isotope data from the upper 88 m composite depth (mcd) at South Atlantic Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1089 (40°56.2?S, 9°53.64?E, 4620 m water depth). The age model is provided by high-resolution oxygen isotope stratigraphy, augmented by radiocarbon dates from the upper 8 mcd of nearby piston core RC11-83. Mean sedimentation rates at Site 1089 are in the range of 15 to 20 cm/kyr. Two intervals during the Brunhes Chron, at ?29.6 mcd (?190 ka) and at ?48 mcd (?335 ka), have component magnetization directions with positive (reverse polarity) inclination; however, the excursional directions are heavily overprinted by the postexcursional field. Magnetite is the dominant carrier of magnetic remanence, and occurs in the pseudosingle-domain (PSD) grain size. An additional higher-coercivity magnetic carrier, characterized by low unblocking temperatures (〈350°C), is assumed to be authigenic pyrrhotite. A decrease in magnetization intensity down core is mirrored by a reduction in pore water sulfate, indicating diagenetic reduction of magnetite. Despite down-core changes in magnetic mineralogy, normalized intensity records from Site 1089 are comparable with high-resolution paleointensity records from the North Atlantic (e.g., ODP Sites 983 and 984). Sediment properties and sedimentation patterns within the Cape (Site 1089) and Iceland (Sites 983 and 984) Basins are distinctly different at both millennial and orbital timescales and therefore preclude lithologic variability from being the source of this correlation. Variations in normalized intensity from Site 1089 therefore appear to reflect changes in global-scale geomagnetic field intensity.

Beschreibung: The Shales-with-'Beef' and Black Ven Marls of the Charmouth Mudstone Formation (Sinemurian) exposed on the Dorset Coast in southern England (Wessex Basin) show stratigraphic variation in carbonate, organic carbon and organic-carbon isotopes. Little environmental significance is attached to the variation of carbonate except in the case of the tabular and nodular limestones interrupting the sequence that probably record stratigraphic condensation and/or sedimentary stillstands that, in an extreme case, were accompanied by sea-floor erosion to produce the bored and encrusted 'Coinstone'. Relatively high total organiccarbon (TOC) contents are present in the laminated mudstones of the lower turneri Zone (upper brooki and lower birch Subzones) and the obtusum Zone (obtusum and stellare Subzones). Basin stratification related to fresh-water influx was the most likely aid to deoxygenation and enhanced preservation of organic matter. The organic-carbon isotope curve (d13Corg), which shows positive excursions in the upper turneri Zone (upper birchi Subzone) and highest obtusum - raricostatum Zones (highest stellare Subzone, densinodulum and lower raricostatoides Subzones), does not correlate with the TOC stratigraphy and was clearly not controlled by local patterns of organic-matter burial. Long-term (hundreds-of-thousands of years) variations in the carbon-isotope (d13Corg) curve are interpreted as reflecting changing seawater isotopic composition and, in the case of the stratigraphically higher interval, may be related to marine organic-carbon burial on the margins of the proto-Atlantic, as exemplified by the Lusitanian Basin in Portugal. Correlation of the carbon-isotope profile with putative sea-level curves is problematic in detail, although significant local transgressive pulses in the turneri and late raricostatum Zones are approximately coincident with positive d13Corg excursions.

Beschreibung: The strength and geometry of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is tightly coupled to climate on glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales, but has proved difficult to reconstruct, particularly for the Last Glacial Maximum. Today, the return flow from the northern North Atlantic to lower latitudes associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation reaches down to approximately 4,000 m. In contrast, during the Last Glacial Maximum this return flow is thought to have occurred primarily at shallower depths. Measurements of sedimentary 231Pa/230Th have been used to reconstruct the strength of circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean, but the effects of biogenic silica on 231Pa/230Th-based estimates remain controversial. Here we use measurements of 231Pa/230Th ratios and biogenic silica in Holocene-aged Atlantic sediments and simulations with a two-dimensional scavenging model to demonstrate that the geometry and strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are the primary controls of 231Pa/230Th ratios in modern Atlantic sediments. For the glacial maximum, a simulation of Atlantic overturning with a shallow, but vigorous circulation and bulk water transport at around 2,000 m depth best matched observed glacial Atlantic 231Pa/230Th values. We estimate that the transport of intermediate water during the Last Glacial Maximum was at least as strong as deep water transport today.

Beschreibung: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 303 to the North Atlantic in 2004 recovered rapidly deposited deep-sea sediments at IODP Site U1305 on Eirik Drift, located south of Greenland at 3460 m water depth, along the path of the Western Boundary Under Current (WBUC). About 200 m of sediment was sampled with u-channels from the composite section, providing a continuous record of paleomagnetic field directions and relative paleointensity (RPI) variations covering the past 1.2 Myr. The age model, based on an oxygen isotope record, is consistent with the fit of the RPI record to a calibrated template, and indicates higher sedimentation rates during interglacials relative to glacial epochs. Magnetite grain-size and concentration proxies indicate higher concentrations of magnetite with larger grain sizes during interglacials. Enhanced interglacial deposition can be attributed to a combination of elevated entrainment of terrigenous detritus into the WBUC due to glacial retreat on continents flanking the upstream path of the WBUC (east Greenland and Iceland), and of increased bottom current (WBUC) vigor leading to elevated transport and deposition at the site during interglacials. This pattern is opposite to observations of flow of the Antarctic circum polar current (ACC) in the south Indian Ocean, which suggests an inter-hemispheric antiphase in marine circulation at the Milankovitch scale, with strong circulation in the deep North Atlantic when the ACC is weak, and vice versa.

Beschreibung: Groundfish survey data from the German Bight from 1902-08, 1919-23, and 1930-1932 and ICES International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) quarter 3 data from 1991 to 2009 were analysed with respect to species frequencies, maximum length, trends in catch-per-unit-effort, species richness parameters (SNR) and presence of large fish (Phi40), the latter defined as average presence of species per haul with specimens larger than 40 cm given. Four different periods are distinguished: (a) before 1914 with medium commercial CPUE and low landings, Phi40 approx. 2, high abundance in elasmobranchs and SNR conditions indicating highly diverse assemblages, (b) conditions immediately after 1918 with higher commercial CPUE, recovering landings, Phi40 at 〉 4 in 1919, and SNR conditions indicating highly diverse assemblages, (c) conditions from 1920 to the early 1930's with decreasing commercial CPUE, increased landings, decreasing Phi40, SNR conditions similar to later years indicating less diverse assemblages, and a decrease in elasmobranchs. In the IBTS series (d), Phi40 remains low indicating an increased rarity of large specimens, and SNR characteristics are similar to the third period. Dab, whiting and grey gurnard have increased considerably in the IBTS series as compared to the historic data. Phi40 is suggested an alternative indicator reflecting community functional diversity when weight based indicators cannot be applied.

Beschreibung: Antarctic and Greenland ice-core records reveal large fluctuations of dust input on both orbital and millennial time-scales with potential global climate implications. At least during glacial periods, the Antarctic dust fluctuations appear to be largely controlled by environmental changes in southern South America. We compare dust flux records from two Antarctic ice-cores to variations in the composition of the terrigenous supply at ODP Site 1233 located off southern Chile and known to record fluctuations in the extent of the northern part of the Patagonian ice-sheet (NPIS) during the last glacial period (Marine Isotope Stage, MIS, 4 to 2). Within age uncertainties, millennial-scale glacial advances (retreats) of the NPIS correlate to Antarctic dust maxima (minima). In turn, NPIS fluctuations were closely related to offshore sea surface temperature (SST) changes. This pattern suggests a causal link involving changes in temperature, in rock flour availability, in latitudinal extensions of the westerly winds and in foehn winds in the southern Pampas and Patagonia. We further suggest that the long-term trend of dust accumulation is partly linked to the sea-level related changes in the size if the Patagonian source area due to the particular morphology of the Argentine shelf. We suggest that sea-level drops at the beginning of MIS 4 and MIS 2 were important for long-term dust increases, while changes in the Patagonian dust source regions primarily control the early dust decrease during the MIS 4/3 transition and Termination 1.
