    Beschreibung: This Open Access book provides a comprehensive review of the rapidly developing esport phenomenon by examining one of its contemporary flagship titles, Overwatch (Blizzard Entertainment 2016), through three central themes and from a rich variety of research methods and perspectives. As a game with more than 40 million individual players, an annual international World Cup, and a franchised professional league with teams from Canada, China, Europe, South Korea, and the US, Overwatch provides a multifaceted perspective to the cultural, social, and economic topics associated with the development of esports, which has begun to attract attention from both commercial and academic audiences. The book starts with an introduction chapter to Overwatch and esports engagement in general, co-authored by the editors. This is followed by 15 unique chapters from scholars within the field of game cultures and esports, representing ten different nationalities. The contributions construct thematic sections that divide the book into three parts: Players, Diverse Audiences? and Fan & Fiction Work. As such, the parts provide a wide-ranging overview of esport engagement, thus disclosing the phenomenon’s cross-cultural, transmedial, and interconnected relations that have not been probed earlier in a single anthology.

    Beschreibung: The volume tells us about the close relationship between heaven and earth, between the extraordinary and the everyday, between faith and science, highlighted by the countless episodes of piety that allow us to retrace history and grasp its transformations, starting from the lived life of thousands of protagonists. In fact, the painted votive tablets prove to be an exceptional vector for reproducing and transmitting the values of the community: family, homeland, work, care for animals and the territory, use of means of transport and old and new technologies. In the ex-voto the cycles of life and seasons unfold and the impact on them of small and large natural or social disasters that recur over time with impressive regularity, unfortunately we find ourselves unprepared each time. In dealing with risks and calamities of all kinds, ex-votos women and men look upwards - with great dignity - asking them to survive, persist and replicate themselves as biological entities and cultural entities. The long sequence of events narrated in the ex-votos constitutes a sort of DNA of our nation, indispensable for shaping the country's future. Also for this reason, painted ex-votos must be detected, filed, preserved, protected, valued, studied and brought to the attention of the general public, as this volume proposes.

Quels liens établissent-ils avec les personnages imaginaires des séries qu'ils regardent ? Telles sont quelques unes des questions auxquelles Dominique Pasquier répond dans ce livre. Pendant quatre années, elle a dépouillé des milliers de lettres adressées par des petites fans à l'héroïne de la série à succès Hélène et les garçons. Elle a, de plus, enquêté dans des familles, discuté de leurs personnages préférés avec des collégiens et lycéens, observé des jeux collectifs dans les cours de récréation. Car, et c'est l'un des premiers apports de cette recherche, l'expérience des médias n'est jamais une expérience solitaire : la sociabilité enfantine se constitue en intègrant ces héros familiers. Pièce par pièce, l'auteur nous entraîne ici dans une enquête minutieuse, subtile et émouvante au cours de laquelle on découvre la place jouée par la fiction dans l'apprentissage de la vie sentimentale, son rôle d'accompagnement des premières expériences amoureuses et la position stratégique qu'elle occupe dans la nouvelle définition des identités sexuées. Ni dupes, ni dupés, ni passifs, ni manipulés, les enfants et les adolescents utilisent la fiction comme une expérience du monde et ses personnages comme des modèles de vie : il faut leur ressembler pour arriver à être soi. Mais ces héros au pouvoir normatif sont l'objet d'une identification fugitive qui cesse dès qu'en est épuisé le potentiel. Par delà l'originalité de la démarche et la finesse des analyses, ce travail pionnier n'a pas seulement le mérite d'éliminer certains stéréotypes liés à l'utilisation de la télévision par les jeunes : il ouvre la voie à une véritable anthropologie des publics.

It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility.     Beschreibung: Fashion is an integral part of popular culture, closely intertwined with tales, magazines, photography, cinema, television, music and sports...up to the emergence of dedicated exhibitions and museums. Fashion is undergoing a major digital transformation: garments and apparels are presented and sold online, and fashion trends and styles are launched, discussed and negotiated mainly in the digital arena. While going well beyond national and linguistic borders, digital fashion communication requires further cultural sensitivity: otherwise, it might ignite inter-cultural misunderstandings and communication crises. This book presents the recent transformation of fashion from being a Cinderella to becoming a major cultural attractor and academic research subject, as well as the implications of its digital transformation. Through several cases, it documents intercultural communication crises and provides strategies to interpret and prevent them.
