    Notizen: Rheological properties of high and low density polyethylene melts (HOPE and LDPE) were measured under two different deformation modes: sinusoidal strain (“dynamic”) and constant rate-of-strain (“steady-state”). For the sinusoidal measurements, a torsional geometry was used, whereas the “steady-state” measurements were carried out in both torsional and capillary flow. The complex and “viscous” components of the “dynamic” viscosity were compared with the “steady-state” viscosities, corrected for both non-Newtonian and end effects. For the HDPEs, the Cox-Merz rule was found to be not valid. The corrected viscosity is closer in magnitude to the “viscous” component, and not to the complex viscosity. However, for the LDPEs, the corrected viscosity is equivalent to the complex viscosity. These results are compared to other correlations found by various authors.

    Notizen: In 1971, the Cyclohexane Oxidation Unit at the Monsanto Plant at Pensacola, Florida, suffered a pipe rupture that resulted in the formation of a cyclohexane vapor cloud of major proportions and disastrous potential. Catastrophe was averted because there was no ignition of the cloud.The incident, plus past and present piping system remediation programs undertaken to prevent future occurrences as described in this article. The current program involves a comprehensive survey of critical piping systems utilizing flexibility analysis, acoustic emission testing, radiographic and ultrasonic inspection, HazOp safety studies, and distributed process controls to properly maintain and operate the critical piping systems.

    Notizen: The certification test standards that presently exist for flame arresters are highly inadequate for inline applications. A proper flame arrester test method should ensure that a unit will work with any flame front conditions that it could be exposed to in actual use. When evaluating flame arrester performance, it is just as dangerous to neglect deflagration testing as detonation testing. The comprehensive inline flame arrester test method outlined here involves exposing a unit to the entire flame propagation pressure spectrum. This includes low, medium and high pressure deflagrations as well as overdriven and stable detonations. The test method also takes into account the following factors: flow restriction on the protected side of the flame arrester, flame propagation through a flowing gas, initial system pressure and temperature, and specified gas mixture. Flow restriction on the protected side of the flame arrester has a very significant effect on performance and has not previously been given consideration in flame arrester testing. Besides moving flame front test, endurance burn testing and hydrostatic pressure testing are also discussed here. Major regulatory organizations have recently adopted these findings as the basis for new standards proposed to cover an inline flame arrester test method.

    Notizen: The use of dual beam microwaves to heat glass mat thermoplastic has been investigated numerically using a finite difference technique, known as the alternating difference implicit (ADI) method. The variation in thermophysical properties throughout the GMT has been accounted for using a table look-up procedure, which provides the appropriate thermophysical properties for the thermal conditions at each mesh point. The use of dual beam microwaves has been shown to significantly reduce the heating times under all geometric conditions, material variations, and glass loadings. Sheet thicknesses were varied from 1 to 12 mm, glass loadings from zero to 40 wt% polypropylene, polycarbonate and nylon were all simulated. The computations indicate a clear advantage in heating times when dual beam microwave heating sources are emplyed.

    Notizen: A computer software has been developed to speed up the design process of automatic degating molds used for injection molding of plastic balls. Following an introduction to the ball making process and the associated mold design consideration, the algorithm and formulation of the software are presented. To demonstrate its versatility, the software developed is adopted to design both testing and production molds that best meet the design and production requirements. Two testing molds were built. While one was used to verify the gate size predicted, the other was built to confirm the workability of the automatic degating design. The results of testing runs have also been used to finalize the details for designing the production mold. The software developed is compact enough to be run on an IBM/PC compatible and has the capability to communicate with commercial CAD/CAM systems to provide necessary drawings or CNC files for mold fabrication.

    Notizen: A relatively simple continuous dilution method with on-line spectrophotometric measurement has been used to determine the phase transition boundaries of aqueous two-phase polymer systems. The observed range of compositions over which the phase transition occurs is dominated by the polydispersity of the polymers, but also is a function of the dilution path followed. The binodal curve obtained by the continuous dilution method agrees well with the results obtained by the traditional method of phase equilibration, separation and analysis of liquid chromatography, which is slower and requires more expensive equipment.

    Notizen: A knowledge based system is described that is designed to generate on-line advice for operators regarding the proper distribution of hydrogen resources in a refinery. The system uses a coupled architecture incorporating numerical computing in a knowledge based system environment. This arrangement allows for powerful and flexible problem solving. One portion of the coupled system formulates an optimization problem that is subsequently solved by an external routine. This application is particularly concerned with uncertainty that is present in some of the constraints. To deal with this uncertainty, a fuzzy approach to the optimization is taken. A method is presented that solves the fuzzy optimization problem using standard mathematical programming techniques. The results of the fuzzy optimization allow the crisp solution to be expanded into a neighborhood of solutions that is considered acceptable. Although this work examines a specific problem, the concepts presented are general.

This method is especially applicable to systems of low solute relative volatility, precisely where other methods such as differential ebulliometry and headspace gas chromatography become less precise. Data are reported for γ∞ for N, N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and N-methyl pyrrolidone in water over a range of temperatures.

    Notizen: A new capillary gas chromatography method to monitor a residual monomer in a polymer is described. A short (5 m) crosslinked methyl silicone fused silica capillary column with flame ionization detection gave good separation efficiency and parts-per-million detection limits. Capillary gas-liquid chromatography was superior to packed column analysis (SP 1000) in terms of both analytical utility and ease of use. This technique may prove useful for monitoring other monomer/polymer systems.
