    Description: Nowadays, lexicographical studies require an interaction with Digital Humanities. This volume presents the genesis and structure of the LBC database, a digital work support tool developed by the Multilanguage Cultural Heritage Lexicon Research Unit under the aegis of the University of Florence, which allows to carry out text research in six different digital corpora (French, English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German). The authors illustrate the specificities of each corpus in terms of the chosen sources and propose lexicographical and translational uses.

Ungheria obtains the real and literary data for a theoretical specification of the state and behaviour of the cultural sphere in the globalized context, in the critical passage constituted – for the political and economic spheres as well – by a transformation of linguistic—national realities. Brief historical notes on the recent and current status of the writer in a Hungary passing from dictatorship to democracy in the end enable light to be thrown on the possible fate of the general figure of the intellectual in the perspective of the realization of a Goethean Weltliteratur.     Description: After more than two centuries, this work presents the Russian version of “Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria, translated by Prince Michail M. Šcerbatov. The edition, conducted on the autographed manuscript, is presented with the original Italian text. In the introductory study, the author traces the fundamental stages of the diffusion of Beccaria’s work in Russia, focusing in particular on the figure of Michail M. Isaev, scholar and translator of the masterpiece by Beccaria, who was the first to re-propose the modern organisation of the “Fifth” edition. The author gives an account of the version proposed by Šcerbatov, investigating its textual genesis and evaluating some aspects of the language used by the translator - first of all the lexicon used for the rendering of philosophical-political and legal terms.

    Description: The aim of this work is to identify the factors which contributed to create Lourdes' success. This analysis starts from the comparison between the 18 apparitions in Lourdes with some similar and contemporary episodes occurring in France, but with a somewhat different outcome, intended as success among the pilgrims. The initial historical, political and cultural contextualization work is accompanied by the analysis of some key aspects of the Catholic Church of that time. In reference to the purpose of the text, two areas are analysed more in-depth: medical science and literature, both closely connected with the question of miracles.

    Description: This volume offers the first Italian translation of Ljósvetninga saga, composed in the thirteenth century, belonging to the genre of íslendigasögur, the “sagas of the Icelanders”. The volume contextualizes the work in the Medieval Icelandic literature’s framework and offers an overlook at philological issues, such as, for example, the relationship between the existing manuscripts and the genesis of the saga. In addition, the volume also provides a literary analysis of the style, characters and text, based on some of the recent academic studies. The Ljósvetninga saga tells the story of the continuous struggles between two families in Northern Iceland for supremacy over the territory: through the extensive references to legal practices, it remains a precious example of medieval Icelandic culture.

    Description: The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process – which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends – is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria – which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) – the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort).

    Description: Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302–1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante’s works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante’s texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context.

    Description: The book contains the philological edition of the corpus of Hittite texts currently collected under number 631 of the Catalogue des Textes Hittites by E. Laroche. They constitute the description of religious ceremonies celebrated in connection with the atmospheric phenomenon of thunder, interpreted as a manifestation of the god of the storm, which was the greatest divinity of the Hittite pantheon. The documents of major extension, presented with a transliteration and translation, are accompanied by a philological comment, aimed at highlighting their structure as well as lexical and grammatical peculiarities, and are introduced by an analysis of dating conducted on a palaeographic basis. The minor fragments are presented in transcription and, where possible, in translation. The text discusses the possible attribution of each fragment to the corpus, based on structure and content. The critical edition of the texts is preceded by an introductory chapter in which the nature of thunder-related festivities and their status in the Hittite cultural calendar are discussed.

    Description: This volume presents the critical edition of Cammino di Dante, the first topo-chronographic summary of Dante's Comedy, written by the Florentine notary, ser Piero Bonaccorsi (1410-1477), for the friar of Santa Croce, Romolo de' Medici. The edition of the text is opened by a bio-bibliographical introduction on the author, that hightlights some new aspects of his notarial career, his literary activity and his relationship with notable figures of his age. The text then presents the seven manuscripts that handed down the Cammino, including four original manuscripts by Bonaccorsi, and analyses their textual relations. The edition offers a critical text based on the codex Riccardiano 1122, the last complete autograph edition, whose unreleased appendix is also published.

    Description: This study’s aim is to deepen and enhance the linguistic dimension in Pier Paolo Pasolini's work, in the hope of restoring to his figure all the fullness of his intense and visceral relationship with the entire universe of languages. In the first part of the work we will investigate the various moments of Pasolini’s reflection on different expressive codes, from dialect to the language of cinema, from the 'Language of Reality' to the technological neo-Italian, promptly counterposed by the author’s linguistic experimentation. From here a broad lexical investigation starts - this study being the subject of the second part of this volume – with the aim of highlighting the author’s contribution to contemporary Italian (as to this day many 'keywords' from Pasolini’s universe still echo in Italian language, from «nuovo Potere» to «Palazzo», from «omologazione» to «mutazione antropologica»), thus confirming, once again, the inseparable relationship between reflection and language creativity, giving birth to a new, unique portrait of Pasolini as a 'linguist' and at the same time as an 'onomaturgist'.

This collective work is the final result of the French-Italian conference “Fratture e integrazioni tra Russia, mondo slavo orientale e Occidente. Storia e civiltà letteraria dal Medioevo all’epoca contemporanea” (University of Florence, April 16-17, 2015): the complexity of cultural relations between Russia, the Slavic East and the European West is analysed by enhancing the variety of points of view and by using different methodological approaches and perspectives provided by different fields of study. Here, new materials and new analytical methods are presented, useful for studying the complex interactions between the Western cultural tradition and the Eastern Slavic one from the Middle Ages to the present day.     Description: The oldest translation in a modern language (vulgarization) of Caesar's commentaries, published in 1438 by Pier Candido Decembrio and dedicated to Filippo Maria Visconti and Inigo d'Avalos, is published for the first time in a critical edition. The text is presented by a rich introduction, which provides a detailed overview of the work, with particular regard to the dedications that accompany it, the style of translation and the Latin exemplar used by the humanist, recognized in a code of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, which, already severely damaged during World War II, was restored at the request of the author of the research at the Government of Saxony, revealing the exceptional ecdotic revision made by the Decembrium on the corpus Caesarianum. The online edition of the volume is accompanied by a special appendix to the philological introduction, which includes all the errors and lessons of the manuscripts that have passed on the vulgarization.

    Description: Cyril Loukaris (1570-1638), Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria and later of Constantinople, is a fascinating and controversial figure. In addition to being a religious authority, the patriarch proved to be a first-rate politician and diplomat, capable of weaving a vast network of relationships. An acute mediator between cultures, he was a prominent intellectual of his time. The volume, the first of its kind in Italy, collects contributions from scholars of different disciplines, which bring out the multiplicity of cultural and geopolitical plans and areas in which the “Protestant” patriarch Loukaris carried out his activity.     Description: Recent work on second language acquisition within the generative framework has pointed out interfaces (syntax-discourse, syntax-semantics, etc.) as a residual domain of vulnerability in L2. Rather than in core syntax, it is at the interface level that the divergence between native and non-native grammars has been shown to be more prominent. In this book the investigation of answering strategies and the focalization of new information subjects, which require access to the syntax-discourse interface, will be pursued. Data is collected through an oral elicitation task on Finnish and Italian, a rather unexplored language pair, in various stages of language development: advanced and intermediate L2 acquisition, L1 under L2 attrition, early bilingualism, child monolingual L1 development.

    Description: Kiev has always revealed a surprising capacity for assimilation, giving rise over time to multi-ethnic, multi-faith and multi-cultural contexts of various types. Thinking of the "Kiev text" leads inevitably to consideration of the other emblematic text of the Ukrainian identity, the no less composite reality of Lviv. This publication contains the contributions presented at a Conference (Milan, February 2007) addressed to the "cultural text" of Kiev and Lviv. The authors are specialists with different cultural profiles, and the book is of a deliberately inter-disciplinary character. In view of the richness and variety of the information it is offered, within the Italian and international context, as a useful source even for the non-specialist public, and is one of a very small number of books dedicated to Ukraine available in Italian. Clearly, the arguments addressed represent only a tiny part of the vast spectrum of issues and questions inherent to the specificity and plurality of Kiev and Lviv. The hope is that the seed sewn here will grow into further fruitful interest.

    Description: The author addresses the issue of the conquest of Caucasus at the hand of the Tsarist army, investigating the attitude held towards this event by three of the major authors of nineteenth-century Russian literature: Aleksandr Puškin (1799-1837), Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) and Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), expressed through some of their most famous works. As for Puškin, the analysis touches the three main Southern Poems, as well as the account of his trip to Arzrum in 1829 on the Russian-Turkish war theatre, and the drama Boris Godunov, dedicated above all to the matter of power, in which however the will to create an empire imposes itself. The analysis of Lermontov’s works, in addition to the poem The novice, set in Georgia, is also about the short story Bela, which is part of the 'novel' A hero of our time. The short story was chosen for its clear display of the Russian officers’ attitude of contempt towards the indigenous Caucasians. The analysis of Tolstoy starts with the young author’s position in the 1850s, when he was a voluntary fighter in the Caucasus, as shown in the story The raid. Then, the analysis moves to the position of the 'mature' Tolstoy, a pacifist and anti-militarist, who expresses his ideas in the long story Hadji Murat.

    Description: The main purpose of this work is to re-examine the literature published in the USSR during the Brežnevian era (1964-'84). Although it was considered insignificant and uninteresting, quickly forgotten after its conclusion, Brežnevian era was a period of silent change of society. These changes reflected on a substantial part of the official literature that while remaining within the ideological and politically acceptable, did not exempt from confronting the most uncomfortable issues of the time. In this ‘free’ zone, authors of the calibre of Čingiz Ajtmatov, Viktor Astaf’ev, Valentin Rasputin, Vasilij Šukšin and Jurij Trifonov succeed in introducing themselves. Their different artistic personalities and ideological positions about the socialist realism show the slow process of pluralization of the Soviet culture.

    Description: From the 1920s onwards, the Soviet Union became a favourite destination for Italian writers, travellers who took it upon themselves to interpret and present the new Soviet world to Italian readers by sending articles to newspapers and magazines, most of which were later published as monographs. The present study aims to investigate the reasons that drove so many intellectuals to visit Russia and the Soviet territories after the October. Through references to historical and political ideologies that may have influenced the writers’ interpretations, the reconstruction of travel conditions and individual approaches to Soviet life, the study focuses on Italian intellectuals’ views on the USSR and the particular value that the reportages had in the construction of the image of the Soviet world in the Italian reality.

    Description: This book addresses certain aspects of the religious thought of H.S. Skovoroda (demonology, the struggle against sin, the spiritualisation of worldly time) against the background of Neoplatonism in its Judaic-Christian interpretation and the Byzantine mystic-ascetic tradition. The author proposes an analysis of Skovoroda's dialogues in which the search for Neoplatonist sources is combined with the identification of elements that can be traced to the tripartite breakdown of the spiritual progress of the Christian into praxis, gnosis. This division, typical of the Eastern Church, conceives spiritual life as an ascending path organised in progressive levels. The study of Skovoroda's universe-text yields two constants. The first is an intense interrelation between the Text and the divine Logos (the Biblical word), which, replicating the schema envisioned in the Christianisation of the cosmology of the Timeo, becomes an active architectural component of the same. The second is an image of the world dominated by a vertical/centripetal orientation, which implies the possibility of a return of things to God, the ultimate end of the path leading from the praxis to the theoria.

    Description: Dante's verse "If I spake false, thou falsifiedst the coin" (Inferno, Canto XXX, verse 115) is a typical example of what would later be defined as “para-hypotaxis”. On the basis of a reconsideration of the categories of 'coordination' and 'subordination', the author proposes an analysis of this syntactic module in ancient Italian, addressing aspects such as its debated origin and the possibility of establishing typological comparisons with structures which are documented in other languages (outside the Romance and Indo-European spheres as well). The research focuses in particular on the identification of the discursive and textual functions of the para-hypotaxis, which were investigated in five texts from the time span between the end of the 13th century and the middle of the 16th century.

    Description: This book represents an attempt to create a "grammar" of the Portuguese clitics, that is to illustrate their rules and particularities, to provide them with a description and to supply – through the exposition and application of a few simple principles – an explanation of the problem of their position in the sentence. Considerable attention has recently been devoted to the Romance clitics, among which the Portuguese occupy a role of undisputed prominence on account of their objectively peculiar nature. This study, based on the observation of the written literary language, analyses the phenomenon through a synchronic, diachronic and comparative approach to European and Brazilian Portuguese. What emerges is the proposal of a typological interpretation of the clitic pronouns, and the Portuguese clitic pronoun system, as a multiform phenomenon that cannot be reduced to a single model.

In four chapters devoted to a profile of this American intellectual and artist, the origins, stylistic features and reception of the cut-up method, the author investigates the reasons for the success of this process, rediscovered by Burroughs and aiming at a reconstruction of text fragments to build up new textual entities. The last chapter is an overview of the most interesting of the uses of the cut-up method in artistic environments other than literary writing, documenting the transformation of a rebellious technique into a new form of expression, i.e. pop art.

    Description: Leonardo Sciascia e la funzione sociale degli intellettuali collects the translations of three writings that have already appeared in English-speaking scientific journals - L'onore, il qualunquismo e l'essenzialismo ne L'antimonio di Sciascia, Sciascia e La scomparsa di Majorana and De L'Affaire Moro e della (ri)scrittura della storia - as well as an in-depth introduction that provides an overview of the author's research results on Sciascia - from which a much more conservative Sciascia than is commonly believed is revealed - as well as an analysis of Sciascia's poetics (centred on the public self-image of the "spoiler"). The essay ends with a concluding chapter where the last decade of Sciascia's career is examined (the period after L'Affaire Moro and the participation of the Sicilian writer in the Moro Commission) during which the author publishes various collections of essays - such as La strega e il capitano, 1912+1, Una storia semplice - and traces an essay on Telesio Interlandi, ideologue of the discriminatory legislation of 1938.

    Description: In Luigi Meneghello's work, the representation of the plant world refers to a subtext of images and symbols: a network of botanical isotopies which transforms into a system while allowing for an alternative and unprecedented reading. From the pages of Libera nos a malo (1963), up to the 'posthumous letters' of L’appendistato (2012), what the author calls «inframondo verdastro» becomes the starting point for the restoration of a literary biosphere, one which is constantly crossed by a double movement: intertextual memory and continuous interaction between Italian, English and the dialect from Vicenza (Italy). Meneghello’s 'reflected garden' thus reveals itself in all its semantic value, and sheds light on a theme of surprisingly great complexity, and also a subject of particular interest for literary ecocriticism.

    Description: The title of this volume refers to a reality which is often dramatically experienced, in different historical phases, by all the territories where Slavic cultures lived in contact with other ethnic groups. Beyond the problems of coexistence, which is additionally complicated today by phenomena such as globalisation and multiculturalism that disguise identity conflicts, the history of the Slavs has always been intertwined with that of other peoples. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to propose the recurrent theme of “borders”, which offers ample space for reflection on a multiplicity of aspects of Slavic cultures. Today Italy still looks at the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with a certain skepticism. The languages and traditions of this area remain little or not at all known. The migratory flows of the peoples in the past twenty years have contributed to creating the image of a backward Europe of secondary importance, which wants to impose itself on the Europe of primary importance. This collective volume, on the other hand, wants to show how we can strive to understand our identity as Europeans only by widening our gaze to the east and learning the lesson of the territories of Central and Eastern Europe. Even if the western Slavs and part of the southern Slavs have participated in western history since the Middle Ages and were then divided by historical events, a new European identity can be forged only by reflecting on the events of the entire Slavic world, and experiencing the same difficulties of coexistence (as is now also the experience of western Europe) between residents and immigrants, majority and minority cultures, identity and otherness.

    Description: In early modern England, the birth of a human being with congenital physical deformities was an event which aroused horror and fascination, disgust and morbid curiosity. In a time when modern science was taking its first steps, this kind of prodigy sometimes appeared as a sort of divine punishment for a moral fault, sometimes as a bizarre pastime, or political weapon, or a pre-medical investigation. By deepening such a multifaceted and constantly changing phenomenon, "A Marvellous and Strange Event" tries to build a complex analysis perspective on the English cultural and social history between the 16th and 18th century.

    Description: The volume proposes a corpus-driven study on the 14,000 occurrences of the verb “essere” (to be) in a corpus of Italian speech C-ORAL-ROM, in the light of the main proposals for the semantic interpretation of the verb. Thus, the very possibility of carrying out research that is strongly characterised in a theoretical sense on a large amount of oral data, generally not very inclined to a systematic taxonomic treatment, is put to the test. The observable datum therefore defines the explicandum of linguistic reflection and the analysis on corpus guarantees the observational adequacy with respect to the actual production data. The proposed results show that the wide semantic variation in the use of the verb is structured in broadly comprehensive macro-classes: the copula (attributive) uses, the identifying uses and the predicative uses with a locative basis. Within each of these classes, primary, consistent and productive variation lines are found.
