Description: Measurements of transmitted irradiance under sea ice and corresponding incident solar radiation at the surface have been performed during the Polarstern expedition PS131, ATWAICE. During this expedition, three major ice floes were revisited to repeat measurements with a time gap of approximately one week and thereby analyze temporal development. Additionally, measurements on another ice floe were repeated 8 times within one day to observe the daily cycle of incoming and transmitted irradiance. All observations took place in the Fram Strait, north of Svalbard, between July 13 and August 6, 2022. The radiation measurements have been performed with Ramses spectral radiometers (TriOS, Rastede, Germany) in the wavelength range 316 to 952 nm. The incoming irradiance sensor was installed at approximately 1 m above the sea ice surface. The transmittance sensor was lowered through a hole (diameter about 10 cm) into the water down to 40 to 50 m depth. There are three datasets, two of them contain the raw data of the incoming and transmittance sensors. The third file contains temporally interpolated data (to 1s) of integrated intensity of both sensors and an estimation of the transmittance which is the ratio of the incoming and the transmitted irradiance. All times are given in UTC. The "incoming" dataset contains the date and time as index, the integration time of the sensor in ms and the measured intensity per channel in mW/m²/nm. The "transmitted" dataset contains the same information for the sensor in the water complemented with the sensor depth in meters and its inclination in two directions in degree (°). The "interpolated" dataset contains again the date and time, sensor depth and inclination information, and the integration times of the two sensors complemented with the integrated intensity measured by the two sensors in W/m² and their ratio which is the transmittance in percent (%). Additionally included, are plots of the sensor depth-transmittance relation for all 19 observations and the ice thickness and ice draft measured at the measurement site. Two figures show the measurement setup.

Description: Understanding permafrost processes and changes requires long-term observational datasets. This dataset is a continuation of the dataset available from the long-term observational site Samoylov, located in the Lena River Delta, Siberia (72.37°N, 126.48°E). The location is characterized by a cold, dry tundra climate with mean annual air temperature of -11.7°C (using years with complete data between 1998 and 2017). The mean monthly temperatures over this period varied between 9.4°C in the warmest month (July) and -31.7°C in the coldest month (February). The average summer rainfall (June-October) was 145.2 mm. This dataset adds recent years to the observations of meteorological parameters, energy balance, and subsurface observations which have been recorded since 1998. The instrumentation, calibration, processing and data quality control is explained in Boike et al. (2019). The data provide observations of temporally variable parameters that mitigate energy fluxes between permafrost and atmosphere. The meteorological observations include snow depth, snow temperature, liquid precipitation, water level, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure and radiation fluxes. The below ground sensors measure ground heat flux, active layer and permafrost temperature, soil volumetric water content, relative permittivity, and soil bulk electrical conductivity. Those variables were measured at various depths and beneath different microtopographic features (a polygon center, a rim, a slope, and a trough), representing landscape heterogeneity. The data also include observations of active layer depth twice per month in summer at 150 points on a regular grid. The observations are suitable for use in integrating, calibrating and testing permafrost as a component in Earth System Models. The resulting quality-controlled dataset is unique in the Arctic and serves as a baseline for future studies.

Description: The data set includes the light absorption coefficient of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) from 200 nm to 700 nm wavelength and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) together with physical oceanographic observations (temperature and salinity) from the Laptev Sea. Sampling was carried out September 2014. During the ship-based expedition, we operated a CTD profiler (conductivity temperature-depth; Seabird 19+) to sample the basic hydrographic parameters. The CTD is operated on a carousel water sampler (SBE 32SC) allowing automated water sampling at pre-selected depths. The dataset is part of a multi-year study (different seasons over a period of 9 years: 2010-2019) of the dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which includes observations in marine waters from the coastal zone to the shelf edge of the Laptev Sea and East Siberian Sea, the river Lena and ice and water samples from the land-fast in the south-eastern Laptev Sea.

Description: Snow height was measured by the Snow Depth Buoy 2018S56, an autonomous platform, drifting on Antarctic sea ice, deployed for the Antarctic Fast Ice Network (AFIN) 2018 at Atka Bay. The resulting time series describes the evolution of snow depth as a function of place and time between 14 June 2018 and 24 January 2020 in sample intervals of 1 hour. The Snow Depth Buoy consists of four independent sonar measurements representing the area (approx. 10 m**2) around the buoy. The buoy was installed on fast ice. In addition to snow depth, geographic position (GPS), barometric pressure, air temperature, and an internal ice temperature were measured. Negative values of snow height occur if surface ablation continues into the sea ice. Thus, these measurements describe the position of the sea ice surface relative to the original snow-ice interface. Differences between single sensors indicate small-scale variability of the snow pack around the buoy. The data set has been processed, including the removal of obvious inconsistencies (missing values). Records without any snow depth may still be used for sea ice drift analyses.

Description: Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in Chinese and German river water samples affected by industrial point sources. In China, sites located at the Yangtze River, at the Xi River and in the Xiaoqing River Basin were selected. In Germany, the selected sites were situated at the Rhine River, Ruhr River, Main River and Alz River. Samples were collected from up- and downstream of seven suspected point sources in autumn 2018. Solid-phase extraction was used for sample preparation before instrumental analysis was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). More information can be found in https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2020.115567. The study aimed at comparing source-specific fingerprints of PFASs in river water from China and Germany, selected as countries with different histories of PFAS production.

Description: The data set includes the light absorption coefficient of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) from 200 nm to 700 nm wavelength and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the land-fast ice in the Laptev Sea. Sampling was carried out March and April 2012. Samples were collected with the help of helicopters in March and April 2012 from camps on the land-fast ice of the south eastern Laptev Sea. During the winter expedition a standalone CTD (Seabird 19+) was lowered through an ice hole along with Nansen water samplers. Six Ice cores (9 cm diameter) from different ice types were collected in 2012 at three sampling sites. Subsamples from the ice cores were taken at 10 cm intervals to represent the different periods in which the ice formed, with the youngest ice occurring in the lower section and the oldest ice from the first phases of ice formation during early winter in the uppermost sections of the ice core. In addition to the CDOM, DOC and salinity measurements in the ice cores, we measured CDOM, DOC, temperature and salinity in the water column under the ice.

Description: Manual measurements of sea ice thickness, sub-ice platelet layer thickness, freeboard, and snow thickness are distributed evenly and repeated along a 25km-long transect across Atka Bay every 2 to 4 weeks. At each measurement location, 5 holes were drilled through the ice in order to determine the aforementioned parameters, one in the center and one in a distance of five meters in each direction, to cover their small-scale spatial variabilities. The measurements have been mainly conducted by the meteorologist (Anna-Marie Jörss) and Klaus Guba, Ina Wehner, Julia Loftfield, Noah Trumpik, Roman Ackle, Wanderson Divino de Almeida Santos of the overwintering team.
