    Beschreibung: 1938 is the year in which racial laws were implemented in Italy. Even in areas with low Jewish presence, such as Sesto Fiorentino, the obligation to register, identify and supervise the few resident Jews was imposed. The chapters of this volume reconstruct the reflections and the consequences of this legislation. Through an investigation starting from the archives of Sesto Fiorentino, and then enriched with other sources, various aspects are explored: the census lists, the presence and surveillance of foreign Jews, the free internment, the application of the laws at school and in the Biblioteca Circolante. Unpublished material reconstructs the precepting of Jews from the Florentine area to work and on the fate of those who, after 1943, found themselves in Sesto Fiorentino.

    Beschreibung: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Conference held on Oct. 7-8, 2022, at the Department of Humanities, Languages and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari, as a conclusion of a two-year Research Project. The idea of dedicating a Research Project to artistic-craft production arose from years of fieldwork in both archaeological and art-historical disciplines, which have increasingly highlighted how much the long tradition of craftsmanship of which Sardinia is proud, which is expressed in artifacts made of ceramics, glass, metal, stone, wood and fabric, even at first glance reveals a transmission of technical and artistic 'knowledge' that is kept alive through the centuries.

L’idea di dedicare alla produzione artistico-artigianale un Progetto di ricerca è scaturita da anni di lavoro sul campo sia nel settore delle discipline archeologiche sia storico-artistiche, che hanno evidenziato sempre più quanto la lunga tradizione artigianale di cui la Sardegna va fiera, che si esprime in manufatti in ceramica, vetro, metallo, pietra, legno e tessuto, anche solo ad un primo sguardo riveli una trasmissione di ‘saperi’ tecnici e artistici che si mantiene viva attraverso i secoli.

    Beschreibung: The grand building complex in Tarraco known as the “Provincial Forum” is one of the most emblematic imperial-era monuments in the western Roman provinces. Based on the observation and detailed analysis of the archaeological evidence from an original perspective, this monograph proposes an investigation of the technical aspects and Roman building processes involved in the three main areas of the monument: the Worship Area, the Representation Square and the Circus. The construction of one of the key monuments in the Roman West was extensively influenced by local stone resources, in particular limestone, coming from the quarries near the colony. The use of this stone material have generated the search for architectural solutions, combination of material and technique, that have become the identifying characteristic not only of the monument, but also of the town’s image. The analysis of the construction process was key to understanding the ancient structures. It revealed the dynamic nature of their construction, the result of a plan that was constantly changing and adapting to external conditions or to the requirements of the construction site. It shows a process that reflects the existence of a plan in continuous evolution, a manifestation of the essence of the building site (cantiere di costruzione) and its architecture.

    Beschreibung: This book brings together forty-two articles illustrating different scientific themes addressed during the career of Michel Reddé, director of studies at the École pratique des Hautes Études. The title is borrowed from a well-known passage by Tacitus (Annals, 1.9.5) which describes the state of the Roman world in 14 AD in these terms: “the ocean sea or distant rivers served as barriers to the Empire; legions, provinces, fleets, everything was linked”. These texts have been classified into five sections (“The role of the sea”, “Rome’s Saharan frontiers”, “The Roman army, Gaul, Germania”, “Around Alesia”, “Aspects of Gaul”). They have been put into perspective by thematic introductions and are accompanied by bibliographical additions to take account of the progress of research subsequent to their initial publication. The subjects treated are apparently heterogeneous: fleets, legions, borders, provinces as far apart as Gaul and Egypt, works devoted to the limes but also to agriculture… What is the connection? The answer is in Tacitus himself: everything was linked, indeed, the security provided on the borders by the legions, the loyalty and prosperity of the provinces, the civil peace and opulence of an empire centred around an inland sea on which the military fleets ensured the continuity of power and communications from one shore to the other. Most of these articles are accompanied, where possible, by references to videos, audio lectures and audio books intended for a wide audience.

    Beschreibung: The study of ceramics needs to work more and more collaboratively together, between archaeologist, historians and archaeometrists : we are developing a real dialogue, which combine different disciplines in a broader perspective related to paleoenvironment as well as technics and economy. The Round Table from April 11th 2016, entitled “Recet multidisciplinary researches on north-adriatic amphoras in the Roman era” gathered some of the researchers from the four large centres of Padova, Vienna-Budapest, Aix-en-Provence and Bordeaux. All participants are involved in this multidisciplinary research with colleagues from Croatia who are widely committed to the archaeological and historic research of Istria. These researchers are motivated by the need to share their methods and reflections and to compare them in order to try finding answers to their problematic which are similar but in very different contexts.

    Beschreibung: The present study analyzes the historical framework of contemporary Ethiopia. Particular attention is given to the economic and political events from the regime change in 1991 to the death of TPLF leader Meles Zenawi in 2012. In line with the Braudelian historical analysis three aspects will be taken into consideration: the Ethiopian Empire under Haile Selassie’s rule, the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, with the rise to power of the Soviet-aligned Derg, and the ensuing civil war with the Maoist guerillas of the TPLF. In addition, the TPLF regime will be examined according to its three underlying concepts – revolutionary democracy, ethnic federalism, and developmental state – and defining theories – neo-patrimonialism, vanguard capitalism, and political marketplace.

    Beschreibung: The exhibition: “La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali” was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the “Galileo” Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini’s government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo».

    Beschreibung: The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class’ status quo.

    Beschreibung: Botanist, zoologist, explorer and anthropologist: between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth, Odoardo Beccari was all this and more. His fame continues to be linked primarily with the scientific expeditions to south-east Asia, and Borneo in particular, and his work on Palms, as well as his skill as a draughtsman and photographer. The material conserved in his personal archive is of fundamental importance for a reconstruction, not only of the his scientific career but also of his private life. This inventory finally provides us with the key to find our way around a very significant body of documents ranging from correspondence, notes and preparatory materials to manuscript drafts, travel journals, map sketches, drawings and photographs.
