    Description: This open access book explores the multifaceted interplay of technology, knowledge, and place. While digital technology is increasingly influencing our way of knowing, conversely it is itself the consequence of human creativity and local social interaction. Part I analyzes how digital technologies transform markets through artificial intelligence and decentralized blockchain models.     Description: This open access edited volume investigates children and youth's deep entanglement in today's major global, national, and local transformations and processes: wherein they are not mere spectators and objects of transformations but instead actively shape them through various social, economic, and political representations. International contributions illuminate the problems that arise when children's rights and participation become a site of contestation and power over who represents whom, what, when, and where. The authors do not provide simple solutions, instead offering an understanding of the fundamental nature of these problems as founded in the application of rights and the nature of representation in modern society. Together, the authors emphasize that child representation must take into account the local and spatial context of how representations of children are discussed, as well as possible discrepancies between local, regional, national, and global processes.

    Socioeconomic Inequality and Educational Outcomes (2021)

    Description: This open access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEA’s Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.

Welche digitalen Technologien, digitalen Werkzeuge und digitalen Lernumgebungen können bei der Entwicklung von 21st Century Skills bei Lernenden beitragen?     Description: This open access book provides a current view on education, equity and inclusion within the lens of education for a sustainable North. The first book published by the University of the Arctic Thematic Network for Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity (Including the North: A comparative study of the policies on inclusion and equity in the circumpolar North, 2019) highlighted policies of inclusion and equity in education in national and regional contexts. This new book explores in more depth the provision of education across the north, focusing on challenges and innovations in meeting the needs of diverse learners in remote and rapidly changing contexts. While many texts address issues of equity, inclusion and diversity, they are almost all focused on the global South, and miss the lessons that can be learned from Northern regions. This book offers an extended essay on teaching and learning through various perspectives and experiences with the aim of creating a more sustainable North. It is structured around two main themes: 1) Supporting Teachers for Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom including consideration of language and identity issues, 2) Engendering community solutions to structural and geographical challenges in education in the circumpolar north.

Von einem dualen Schriftspracherwerb spricht man, wenn Kinder oder Jugendliche mit Sehbeeinträchtigung neben der Schwarzschrift auch die Brailleschrift erlernen. Vom Erwerb eines zusätzlichen Schriftmediums profitieren insbesondere Lernende mit fortschreitenden oder schwerwiegenden Augenerkrankungen. Wie wirkt sich ein dualer Schriftspracherwerb auf die Leseflüssigkeit, die Rechtschreibung bzw. das Lese- und Hörverstehen aus? Wie können Kinder und Jugendliche mit dualer Schriftnutzung gefördert werden? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, werden die Ergebnisse aus einer Kompetenzerhebung sowie mehreren Fallstudien herangezogen und mit dem aktuellen Kenntnis- und Forschungsstand zur dualen Schriftnutzung verknüpft. Dazu werden praktische und anschauliche Beispiele geliefert, wie der Unterricht von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit dualer Schriftnutzung gelingen kann.
