    Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

    Description: "The stability and quality of work careers are major social and economic issues, as the funding of the Nordic welfare state is based on the employment of working-age people and the tax revenue collected from work, production and consumption. This edited volume examines how work careers have developed in specific industrial sectors and at different levels of education in recent decades. The research results are based on the linked employer-employee data of Statistics Finland, company statistics and interviews with industry experts. Careers are examined from several different perspectives, including career stability, employment status, income development, mobility between industries and places of work, and on-the-job training. Based on the results, careers have not weakened between cohorts on average in Finland. Instead of the often-expressed perception of greater job instability, there is high stability of employment combined with high mobility within the careers, owing to the high frequency of changing industries and jobs. However, the career development of women and the low-skilled lags behind that of men and the more highly educated, meaning that equality in earnings has not progressed. Other key findings of the study suggest that adult education differs according to the level of education, and that companies' investments in intangible capital anticipate positive career outcomes for employees."

    Description: "Tampere3 project, general knowledge, multicultural education, relocation of upper secondary school in a university campus, educational institution safety, wellbeing at work, successful recruitment process – these topics are discussed in eleven articles of this publication. The empirical data of these articles was collected during winter 2016-2017. Method of empathy based stories (MEBS) is a method for collecting qualitative data in which respondents write a story based on an orientation text, usually referred to as a frame story or a script. At least two different frame stories/scripts need to be formulated. MEBS data analysis is two-fold: firstly qualitative data analysis is based on the thematic framework of the research, furthermore the analysis imitates an empirical study and highlights the influence of the alteration of one factor in the frame story. MEBS has been utilized increasingly in various research fields in Finland since 1982. MEBS is in principle flexible and easy-to-use method, therefore it can be applied to explore a variety of research questions. The topics researched can be theoretically sophisticated and structured. They can be based on earlier research as well as to solve questions of more pragmatic nature. Despite the ostensible simplicity of using MEBS, many aspects need careful consideration and decisions need to be made especially in the data collection phase. So the last chapter of the publication concentrates on the formulation process of frame stories and data collection in an increasingly digitalized and diversified society. This publication is the first volume of the yearbook series introducing MEBS and research."
    Description: "Tampere3-hanke, yleissivistys, maahanmuuttajien koulutus, lukion siirto yliopistokampukselle, oppilaitosturvallisuus, työhyvinvointi, onnistunut rekrytointiprosessi... Näitä kaikkia aiheita käsitellään teoksen 11 tutkimusartikkelissa, joiden empiirinen aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmällä talvella 2016­–2017. Eläytymismenetelmällä tarkoitetaan tiedonhankintamenetelmää, jossa vastaajat kirjoittavat kertomuksen tutkijan antaman, kehyskertomukseksi kutsutun orientaation perusteella. Kehyskertomuksia on aina vähintään kaksi erilaista ja aineisto analysoidaan kahteen kertaan: normaalina tutkimuksen tematiikasta kertovana laadullisena aineistona sekä kokeellisen tutkimuksen asetelmaa imitoiden ja pelkistäen sitä, mikä vastauksissa muuttuu, kun kehyskertomuksessa muutetaan yhtä keskeistä tekijää. Eläytymismenetelmää on käytetty eri tieteenaloilla yhä enenevissä määrin Suomessa vuodesta 1982 alkaen. Menetelmä sopii varsin monenlaisten tutkimusongelmien selvittämiseen joustavuutensa ja eräänlaisen kevytkäyttöisyytensä vuoksi. Aiheet voivat olla teoreettisesti jäsentyneitä ja aiemmasta tutkimuksesta ponnistavia mutta myös käytännön ongelmista inspiroituvia. Näennäisestä helppoudestaan huolimatta menetelmän käyttöön liittyy paljon pohdittavaa ja päätettävää erityisesti aineiston keräämisen vaiheessa. Eläytymismenetelmän käyttöä kehitetäänkin teoksen päättävässä menetelmäartikkelissa siitä näkökulmasta, miten menetelmälle keskeiset kehyskertomukset kannattaa muotoilla ja miten niiden avulla aineisto on kerättävissä digitalisoituvassa ja monikielistyvässä yhteiskunnassamme. Teos on ensimmäinen volyymi eläytymismenetelmää ja sillä toteutettavaa tutkimusta esittelevässä vuosikirjojen sarjassa. "

    Description: "Towards New Beginnings: Journalists’ Descriptions about Ruptures in Media Work This volume reveals a previously untold view on changes in media work in Finland. Finnish journalists relate their experiences of being made redundant or deciding to resign, and their views on their profession in a time of flux. The data are based on telephone surveys, in-depth interviews and journalists’ written accounts. Journalists are riddled with insecurity about their future. They feel they have borne the brunt of misplaced investments and the economic conjuncture, and their work motivation and creativity have suffered due to recurring layoffs in newsrooms. Support from employment authorities for finding a new job has also been practically non-existent, and coping with a career change has generated further stress and insecurity. However, journalists who have found new employment typically feel more comfortable in these jobs than in their former work. Career shifters have also been able to make use of their journalistic skills in their new jobs and identify themselves as journalists. The authors are from the Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) at the University of Tampere, Finland. The study was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund and the Foundation for Promoting Journalistic Culture (JOKES). "
    Description: " Teos tarjoaa uutta, kokemusperäistä tietoa toimittajista mediatyön murroksessa. Suomalaiset journalismin tekijät kertovat kokemuksistaan ja näkemyksistään, kun oma työsuhde päättyy irtisanomiseen tai irtisanoutumiseen ja kun oma ammatti käy läpi merkittävää murrosvaihetta. Toimittajien kokemuksia yt-neuvotteluista, työttömyydestä ja uudelleentyöllistymisestä on koottu teosta varten puhelinkyselyllä, teemahaastatteluin sekä toimittajien laatimilla kirjoitelmilla. Tutkimuksen mukaan toimittajia jäytää epävarmuus tulevaisuudesta. Ammattikunta kokee joutuneensa virheinvestointien ja suhdanteiden sijaiskärsijäksi, ja työmotivaatio sekä luovuus ovat kärsineet toistuvien yt-kierrosten takia. Uuden työn löytäminen on jäänyt jokaisen omalle kontolle; työvoimaviranomaisilta ei ole herunut edes rohkaisua uuteen alkuun. Vanhasta työstä luopuminen ja uuteen sopeutuminen ovat kuormittaneet ja luoneet epävarmuutta esimerkiksi pärjäämisestä. Tutkimukseen haastatellut uudelleentyöllistyneet toimittajat kertoivat silti viihtyvänsä uudessa työssä paremmin kuin edellisessä työpaikassa. Vaikka toimittaja oli vaihtanut toiselle alalle, hän pystyi yhä hyödyntämään journalistista osaamistaan ja tuntemaan itsensä edelleen toimittajaksi. Teos on tarkoitettu paitsi tutkijoille ja opiskelijoille myös mediatyötä ja laajemminkin tietotyötä tekeville. Se sopii luettavaksi myös muille mediasta ja työelämästä kiinnostuneille.     Description: It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.

    Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

    Description: Developing independence as a learner is necessary for becoming a lifelong learner in an increasingly changing world. However, an individual without a community and socially shared learning processes is not an ideal for learning the skills for cooperation, creativity, or solving common problems. This book introduces the readers the perspective of identity development to learning processes, and particularly the questions of learning information literacy. The revised national school curriculum 2014 in Finland (implemented from Fall term 2016) emphasizes developing the students’ metaskills for learning. These metaskills can be described as aptitudes and skills for independent knowledge acquisition, problem-solving and creative thinking. This will act as a framework for the book. The contents includes discussion on the concepts of identity and information literacy, and their central role in becoming an independent learner willing to share and learn from others. The book also discusses enhancing the identity development processes and reaching the skilled levels of information literacy. The book is intended for teachers interested in developing pedagogical practices. It will also help pedagogically thinking information professional to develop their instruction and information training. The ideas and frameworks introduced in the book will also be useful for students in education, informatics and other areas which explore issues of identity development and information literacy.
    Description: Tavoitteena itsenäinen oppija – identiteetin ja informaatiolukutaitojen vahvistaminen koulutuksessa Peruskoulutuksen uusi, vuonna 2014 vahvistettu opetussuunnitelma korostaa oppimistavoitteena laaja-alaista osaamista – oppijan metavalmiuksia. Kehitys itsenäisenä oppijana luo tiedollista taidollista ja asenteellista perustaa elämän hallintaan yhteiskunnassa, jossa muutokset ovat nopeita ja vaikeasti ennakoitavia. Tämä kirja tarkastelee itsenäisen oppijuuden kahta keskeistä peruspilaria: identiteettiä ja informaatiolukutaitoa (monilukutaitoa).     Description: This compilation approaches educational and educational communities on an exploratory and developing occasion. In times of individuality, efficiency and competitiveness, countermeasures are needed to build community-building practices. Collaboration requires a common language, common understanding, trust and increasingly multilingualism whose importance has been emphasized with new media and virtual communities. When educating and teaching communities understand the importance of the community, through everyday interaction, there are opportunities to establish strong links between the teacher and the learners. If a common curriculum activity is to be developed as a meaningful negotiation of the entire education and teaching community, it also requires interaction and co-operation between different actors.
    Description: Tämä kokoomateos lähestyy koulutuksen ja kasvatuksen yhteisöjä tutkivalla ja kehittävällä otteella. Yksilöllisyyttä, tehokkuutta ja kilpailukykyä painottavana aikana tarvitaan vastavoimana yhteisöjä rakentavia toimintatapoja. Yhteistyön edellytyksenä on yhteinen kieli, yhteinen ymmärrys, luottamus sekä yhä enenevässä määrin monilukutaito, jonka merkitys on korostunut uusien medioiden ja virtuaalisten yhteisöjen myötä. Kun kasvatus- ja opetusyhteisössä ymmärretään yhteisön merkitys, arjen vuorovaikutuksen kautta on mahdollisuuksia luoda vahvistuvia yhteyksiä opettajan ja oppijoiden välille. Jos yhteistä opetussuunnitelmaan perustuvaa toimintaa halutaan kehittää koko kasvatus- ja opetusyhteisön merkitysneuvotteluna, se niin ikään edellyttää keskinäistä vuorovaikutusta ja eri toimijoiden välistä yhteistyötä. Teoksen ensimmäisessä osassa, Opetussuunnitelma yhteisön työnä, tarkastellaan korkea-asteen ja perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmatyön ajankohtaisia kysymyksiä. Opetussuunnitelmatyössä kohtaavat rakenteet ja yksilöt, poliittiset, taloudelliset ja pedagogiset intressit, oppijoiden, opettajien, johdon ja virkamiesten maailmat sekä erilaiset tavat nähdä tieto ja tietäminen, osaaminen ja yhteiskunnan muutokset. Toisessa osassa, Opiskelija yhteisön jäsenenä, keskitytään opintoihin kiinnittymisen, hyvinvoinnin ja mielekkäiden oppimiskokemusten arviointiin, tukemiseen ja kehittämiseen opetusyhteisöissä luoden samalla vaihtoehtoista tulkintaa ja viitekehystä nykyiselle tehokkuutta ja tuloksia korostavalle ajattelutavalle. Kolmannessa osassa, Lukeminen, kirjoittaminen ja monilukutaito koulutuksen yhteisöissä, katsotaan paitsi kirjoittamisen opetuksen historiaan suomalaisessa koulussa mutta pyritään myös ymmärtämään tulevaa ja sitä, mitä lukutaidolla oikeastaan nykyisin tarkoitetaan. Erilaisissa kasvatuksen ja opetuksen yhteisöissä on olennaista kehittää opetusta askel askeleelta eteenpäin kohti oppijoiden ja opettajien hyvinvoivia ja uutta luovia yhteisöjä. Teoksen nimessä oleva Kehittämisen palat kuvaa kehittämistyön vähittäistä, pienin askelin etenemistä ja yhteisöjen salat puolestaan yhteisöjen monilta osin tiedostamatonta potentiaalia kasvatuksen ja opetuksen kehittämisessä.
