    Description: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University of Hamburg's main building, a ceremony was held on May 13th, 2011. The keynote speaker was Heinz-Elmar Tenorth, Professor of Historical Education in Berlin. Heinz Rieter and Rainer Nicolaysen awarded two lecture hall names, the socio-economic economist Eduard Heimann (1889-1967)(Lecture Hall H) and the lawyer Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1874-1936) (Lecture Hall K). Thus, the programme for naming the seven lecture halls of the University's main building after outstanding scientists who were expelled from the Nazi regime came to an end.Detailed information on all names of the lecture hall can be found in the anthology 〈a href="http://hup.sub.uni-hamburg.de/purl/HamburgUP_Nicolaysen_Hauptgebaeude"〉The main building of the University of Hamburg as a place of remembrance〈/a〉, which was published on the occasion of the anniversary.

    Description: This collection of thirteen essays examines sociolinguistic phenomena in a wide variety of marginal environments, providing both an overview of globalizaiton on the margins and a foundation for an expanded understanding of the processes of linguistic and cultural changes at work in these settings. Taking an expansive conceptual view of margins, the volume is organized in three parts, looking at examples of marginal spaces in the nation-state, in online environments, and in the peripheries of urban locations, globally to call attention to new and changing discursive genres, patterns, practices, and identities emerging in these spaces as a result of contemporary mobilities, the evolving global economy, and socio-political changes. With previous research previously confined to the study of globalization in urban areas, this volume opens the door for further research on the complex sociolinguistic processes resulting from globalization on the margins, making this an ideal resource for students and scholars in sociolinguistics, globalization and heritage studies, new media, anthropology, and cultural studies.     Description: The central issue Bush finds in these works is how their authors have dealt with the authority of Mormon Church leaders. As she puts it in her preface, "I use the phrase 'faithful transgression' to describe moments in the texts when each writer, explicitly or implicitly, commits herself in writing to trust her own ideas and authority over official religious authority while also conceiving of and depicting herself to be a 'faithful' member of the Church." Bush recognizes her book as her own act of faithful transgression. Writing it involved wrestling, she states, "with my own deeply ingrained religious beliefs and my equally compelling education in feminist theories that mean to liberate and empower women." Faithful Transgressions examines a remarkable group of authors and their highly readable and entertaining books. In producing the first significant book-length study of Mormon women's autobiographical writing, Bush rides a wave of memoir publishing and academic interest in autobiography and other life narratives. As she elucidates these works in relation to the religious tradition that played a major role in shaping them, she not only positions them in relation to feminist theory and current work on women's life writings but ties them to the long literary tradition of spiritual autobiography.

    Description: This book is comprised of important reviews and cutting-edge original research papers concerning electrospun and electrosprayed formulations in drug delivery. Electrospinning and electrospraying have, in recent years, attracted increasing attention in the pharmaceutical sector, with research in the area advancing rapidly. It is now possible to prepare extremely complex systems using multi-fluid processes, and to increase production rates to an industrial scale. Electrospun formulations can be produced under GMP conditions and are in clinical trials. In this volume, we explore a range of topics around electrospinning and electrospraying in controlled drug delivery. Four reviews cover the exciting potential of cyclodextrin-containing fibers and the many potential biomedical applications of electrospun fibers. The use of electrospinning to prepare amorphous systems and improve the dissolution rate and solubility of poorly soluble active ingredients is addressed, and the possibilities of such materials in tissue engineering are comprehensively covered. The six original research papers cover the effect of molecular properties on API release from Eudragit-based electrospun fibers; ferulic acid solid dispersions; electrospun medicines to treat psoriasis; scale up of electrospinning and its use to produce low-dose tablets; transepithelial permeation of drugs released from electrospun fibers, and the possibilities for the synergistic chemophotothermal treatment of cancer.

    Description: The publication entitled "Vergangenheit, die nicht vergeht. Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" (A past, that doesn't pass. Holocaust Memory in France since 1945 in the Media Film) explores the basic transformations of the Holocaust-memory in France on the basis of French fiction films that are to be identified as part of cinematography of the Holocaust. The chosen approach that can be described as a history of memory referring to models of collective memory in cultural science studies. The aim is to specify the change of collective memory at the level of the particular filmic narratives and - by doing so - to identify and to analyze the long term development and ruptures in the French culture of remembrance since 1945. The empiric part of this study is preceded by methodological reflections that on the one hand permit a clear and differentiating application of the terms used in the current cultural studies of collective memory. On the other hand this chapter should help to conceive the material of research "Fiction Film" as primal source for historical science. The investigation is divided into five chronological parts and involves altogether a sample of 50 films into the general study before electing cases for deeper analyses.
    Description: Das Publikationsvorhaben mit dem Titel "Vergangenheit, die nicht vergeht. Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" erforscht anhand französischer Spielfilme - die als Teil einer Kinematografie der Shoah ausgemacht werden können - die grundlegenden Transformationen des Gedächtnisses der Shoah am Beispiel Frankreich. Mit einem gedächtnisgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der sich an den kulturwissenschaftlichen Modellen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses orientiert, konkretisiert die Arbeit den Wandel des Gedächtnisses anhand der jeweiligen filmischen Narrative und verfolgt auf diese Weise Langzeitentwicklungen und Brüche in der französischen Erinnerungskultur zwischen 1945 und heute. Dem empirischen Arbeitsteil sind theoretische und methodische Überlegungen vorgeschaltet, die einerseits einen eindeutigen und differenzierten Zugriff auf das Begriffsrepertoire der aktuellen kulturwissenschaftlichen Gedächtnisforschung erlauben und zugleich das Untersuchungsmaterial "Spielfilm" als Primärquelle der Geschichtswissenschaft fassbar bzw. bearbeitbar machen. Die Untersuchung gliedert sich in fünf chronologisch gereihte Abschnitte und bezieht insgesamt ein Corpus von 50 Filmen in die allgemeine Fragenstellung ein, bevor nach dem Prinzip des Fallbeispiels einzelne Filme einer genaueren Analyse unterzogen werden.

    Description: Fluid intake has barely been assessed, and hydration status has only rarely been measured in epidemiological studies. This hampers attempts to assess the adequacy of water intake at a population level. However, although guidelines have been established to determine how much water humans require to avoid dehydration and to optimize physical and psychological function, limited data are available on the total water and beverages intake. Therefore, the percentage of population with inadequate water intake is unknown. There is a clear need for studies in different settings around the world that quantify total water and beverage intake and explore associations between types of beverages consumed and energy intake.

    Description: Si c’est « malgré tout » qu’il faut défendre la sociologie, c’est malgré ce qu’elle est devenue. Bien loin de ses grandes espérances initiales et des splendeurs que nous ont léguées les Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Mead, Elias, Mauss, etc. Ce que l’on appelle sociologie s’est peu à peu recroquevillé jusqu’à apparaître comme la « science (ou la pseudo science) des restes », la science de ce dont ne parlent ni les philosophes, ni les économistes, ni les historiens, ni les anthropologues, ni les théoriciens de la littérature, etc. Éclatée en de multiples chapelles théoriques ou idéologiques, privée de colonne vertébrale paradigmatique et institutionnelle, elle ne croit plus pouvoir trouver son unité que dans une référence de plus en plus incantatoire au « terrain » et à l’empirisme, et dans ses querelles infinies sur ce qui fait la bonne méthode ou le bon terrain. La sociologie classique, celle qu’il nous faut faire revivre et actualiser, se présentait tout autrement. Elle revendiquait hautement une approche empirique de la réalité et le souci d’établir des faits, elle aussi, mais elle n’imaginait pas que ce puisse être accompli hors-théorie et sans enjeux normatifs, c’est-à- dire éthiques et politiques... Dit autrement, elle se vivait comme le lieu et le moment généraliste de la science sociale générale. C’est cette sociologie là, autrement dit la science sociale générale, qui nous fait désormais défaut et qu’on appelle ici à renaître de ses cendres.

A strategic project that plans to reactivate the covered section of the Naviglio Martesana and the Cerchia Interna, reuniting Adda and Ticino rivers, and give new life to the great Renaissance project that Leonardo himself had worked on. In its methodological approach and in the specific outcome achieved, we can recognize elements of continuity with Leonardo’s thinking and contribute to a territorialist reflection on its current relevance.

    Neuroimmune Interface in Health and Diseases (2021)

    Description: It is now well appreciated that the immune system, in addition to its traditional role in defending the organism against pathogens, communicate in a well-organized fashion with the brain to maintain homeostasis and regulate a set of neural functions. Perturbation in this brain-immune interactions due to inflammatory responses may lead to psychiatric and neurological disorders. Microglia are one of the essential cells involved in the brain-immune interactions. Microglial cells are now not simply regarded as resident tissue macrophages in the brain. These cells are derived from myeloid progenitor cells in the yolk sac in early gestation, travel to the brain parenchyma and interact actively with neurons during the critical period of neurogenesis. Microglia provide a trophic support to developing neurons and take part in the neural wiring through the activity-dependent synapse elimination via direct neuron-microglia interactions. Altered microglial functions including changes in the gene expression due to early life inflammatory events or psychological and environmental stressors can be causally related to neurodevelopmental diseases and mental health disorders. This type of alterations in the neural functions can occur in the absence of infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain parenchyma or leptomeninges. In this sense, the pathogenetic state underlying a significant part of psychiatric and neurological diseases may be similar to “para-inflammation”, an intermediate state between homeostatic and classical inflammatory states as defined by Ruslan Medzhitov (Nature 454:428-35, 2008). Therefore, it is important to study how systemic inflammation affects brain health and how local peripheral inflammation induces changes in the brain microenvironment. Chronic pain is also induced by disturbance in otherwise well-organized multisystem interplay comprising of reciprocal neural, endocrine and immune interactions. Especially, early-life insults including exposure to immune challenges can alter the neuroanatomical components of nociception, which induces altered pain response later in life. Recently the discrete roles of microglia and blood monocyte-derived macrophages are being defined. The distinction may be further highlighted by disorders in which the brain parenchymal tissue is damaged. Therefore, studies investigating the dynamics of immune cells in traumatic brain injury and neurotropic viral infections including human immunodeficiency virus, etc. as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are promising to clarify the interplay between the central nervous and immune systems. The understanding of the histological architecture providing the infrastructure of such neuro-immune interplay is also essential. This Frontiers research topic brings together fourteen articles and aims to create a platform for researchers in the field of psychoneuroimmunology to share the recent theories, hypotheses and future perspectives regarding open questions on the mechanisms of cell-cell interactions with chemical mediators among the nervous, immune and endocrine systems. We hope that this platform would reveal the relevance of the studies on multisystem interactions to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms underlying a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

    Inhibiting PARP as a Strategic Target in Cancer (2021)

    Description: Poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) proteins are critical mediators of DNA repair. Many traditional anti-cancer chemotherapy agents overwhelm a cell’s ability to repair DNA damage in order to kill proliferating malignant cells. Recent evidence suggests that cancers within and across tissue types have specific defects in DNA repair pathways, and that these defects may predispose for sensitivity and resistance to various classes of cytotoxic agents. Breast, ovarian and other cancers develop in the setting of inherited DNA repair deficiency, and these cancers may be more sensitive to cytotoxic agents that induce DNA strand breaks, as well as to inhibitors of PARP activity. A series of recent clinical trials has tested whether PARP inhibitors can achieve synthetic lethality in hereditary DNA repair-deficient tumors. At the current time, mutation of BRCA serves as a potential, but not comprehensive, biomarker to predict response to PARP inhibitor therapy. Mechanisms of resistance to PARP inhibitors are only recently being uncovered. Future studies seek to identify sporadic cancers that harbor genomic instability rendering susceptibility to PARP inhibitors that compound lethal DNA damage.

    Description: Gluten is the major protein of wheat and other cereals (rye and barley); it is responsible for triggering celiac disease (CD) in genetically predisposed individuals. Until a few years ago, CD was the major (if not the only) well-known gluten-related disorder. However, in recent years, it has become clear that gluten proteins may activate different pathological mechanisms, leading to a wide spectrum of human diseases, including non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), gluten ataxia, neuro-psychiatric disorders, and many others. Conceptually, we have therefore moved from a Ptolemaic to a Copernican system, i.e., CD is no longer the “center of the universe”, but is just one of the possible worlds of gluten intolerance. Many other gluten planets do indeed exist and deserve the attention of researchers and clinicians alike. Although different gluten-related disorders show specific epidemiological, pathophysiological, and clinical aspects, these conditions share a trigger and treatment: the gluten-free diet. For a very long time, awareness of these disorders has been limited and, therefore, the epidemiology of gluten-related disorders is still a “work in progress”. Current research strives to clarify the boundaries between these entities, their disease mechanisms, and how a proper diagnosis can be implemented.

    Description: Placing Empire examines the spatial politics of Japanese imperialism through a study of Japanese travel and tourism to Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan between the late nineteenth century and the early 1950s. In a departure from standard histories of Japan, this book shows how debates over the place of colonized lands reshaped the social and spatial imaginary of the modern Japanese nation. In turn, this sociospatial imaginary affected the ways in which colonial difference was conceptualized and enacted. The book thus illuminates how ideas of place became central to the production of new forms of colonial hierarchy as empires around the globe transitioned from an era of territorial acquisition to one of territorial maintenance.

Their ontogeny, together with the absence of turnover from the periphery and the singular environment of the central nervous system (CNS), make microglia a unique cell population compared to other tissue-macrophages. The unique properties and functions of microglial cells, such as their role in synaptic pruning or the exceptional capacity to scan the brain parenchyma and rapidly react to its perturbations, have emerged in recent years. In the coming years, understanding how microglia acquire and maintain their unique profiles in order to fulfil distinct tasks in the healthy CNS and how these are altered in disease, will be essential to develop strategies to diagnose or treat CNS disorders with an immunological component. This Research Topic covers several aspects of microglial biology, ranging from their origin and the functional role of microglia during development and lifespan, their molecular properties compared with other brain and peripheral immune cells to microglial phenotypes and functional states in neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumours. In conclusion, the present Research Topic provides a comprehensive overview of our current understanding of several cellular and molecular mechanisms that make microglia a unique immune cell population within the healthy CNS as well as under inflammatory, neurodegenerative and tumorigenic processes.

    Description: La recherche et l'aménagement du territoire des années 1960 nous ont légué l'image persistante de réseaux urbains régionaux et nationaux, construits sur la base de rapports hiérarchiques entre des villes de stature et de rayonnement inégaux. Comment ces positions, assignées par la puissance objective des agglomérations, mais aussi par la représentation et par la volonté aménagistes ont-elles évolué depuis près de trente ans ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous avons choisi de partir du cas spécifique de Pau, promue sous-capitale régionale par le schéma d'armature urbaine de l'Aquitaine (1965), mais soucieuse aussi, dès cette époque, d'affirmer son leadership sur l'aire quelque peu mythique des Pays de l'Adour, concurremment à Tarbes et surtout à Bayonne. Pour tenter d'éclairer, aujourd'hui, l'actualité des hiérarchies, des concurrences et des complémentarités entre cités, s'exprimant dans le cadre de l'Aquitaine (et au-delà lorsque les frontières administratives ne correspondent plus à l'articulation des réseaux), nous avons privilégié une approche des rapports urbains qui passe par l'étude de l'économie, de la géographie, mais aussi de la sociologie des services marchands aux entreprises. La poussée de ces activités de pointe illustre en effet l'expansion rapide d'un secteur tertiaire supérieur très expressif de l'Influence réelle qu'exercent les villes sur l'espace géographique ; très démonstratif de leur capacité, en somme, à forger des régions.

En Provence, pendant plus de trois siècles, ces ex-voto ont souvent pris la forme d’un petit tableau déposé dans un sanctuaire, montrant le protecteur et les circonstances de la protection. Ces tableaux votifs présentent des images de la vie d’autrefois, dans des circonstances particulières, celles du danger, qui ont motivé la demande d’intervention céleste. À côté de ces scènes du vécu quotidien, ils offrent aussi une représentation du sacré, et de son lien avec les hommes. Le présent ouvrage se fonde sur une analyse exhaustive des quatre mille ex-voto provençaux, mais en présente une version destinée à un large public. En effet il est construit à partir de la reproduction photographique de plus de deux cents ex-voto, dont la majorité inédits. Ce sont ces photos qui servent de support à l’analyse et au commentaire, faisant pénétrer le lecteur dans l’univers matériel quotidien (maladies, naissances, accidents du travail, accidents de la circulation terrestre et maritime, guerre et violence, dangers de la foudre ou des eaux…) et dans les représentations des recours célestes de nos ancêtres (les saints intercesseurs, Marie…), face au danger.

Qu’on ne s’étonne donc pas que cet ouvrage aborde tout autant l’œuvre du sociologue que, plus largement, les boule­ver­sements d’une société confrontée aux défis incessants de sa modernisation. Si les témoignages nous font pénétrer dans l’intimité de l’homme et du citoyen, les analyses signées par des professeurs de renom nous dévoilent, sous un jour neuf, le paysage social, politique et scientifique du Québec. Écrits à partir de perspectives disciplinaires les plus diverses (science politique, droit, sociologie, histoire, etc.), les textes qui composent cet ouvrage nous permettent de mieux comprendre, non seulement l’évolution globale de la société québécoise, mais les enjeux bien contemporains que l’histoire a légués en héritage à la génération présente. Guy Rocher est né à Berthierville en 1924. Ses études classiques terminées, il joint les rangs de la Jeunesse étudiante catholique. Il fait par la suite ses études en sciences sociales à l’Université Laval avec le père Georges-Henri Lévesque et son doctorat en sociologie à l’Université Harvard sous la direction de Talcott Parsons. À son retour, il enseigne la sociologie d’abord à l’Université Laval puis, en 1960, il accepte le poste de directeur du Département de sociologie à l’Université de Montréal, dont il est toujours membre du corps professoral. Depuis 1983, il est aussi chercheur au Centre de recherche en droit public de cette même université. Il a été membre de la commission Parent (1961-1966), sous-ministre au Développement culturel (1977-1979) et au ministère du Développement social (1981-1983) du Gouvernement du Québec. Il est récipiendaire de plusieurs prix académiques, dont le prix Marcel-Vincent, le prix Léon-Gérin, le prix Molson, et le prix William Davidson de la Société royale du Canada, dont il est membre depuis 1974. Son ouvrage Introduction à la sociologie générale (1968) a été traduit en plusieurs langues et est encore aujourd’hui un livre de référence majeur pour l’enseignement de la sociologie.

    Description: The non-classical HLA class I molecule HLA-G is different from classical HLA class I molecules because of the low polymorphism in the coding region, the fact that HLA-G primary transcript is alternatively spliced in seven isoforms, and the inhibitory action on immune cells. Although HLA-G is low polymorphic, variants in both promoter and 3’ un-translated region (UTR) of HLA-G locus regulate its expression. In healthy conditions, a basal level of HLA-G gene transcription is observed in most cells and tissues; however, translation into HLA-G protein is restricted to trophoblasts in the placenta, where it participates in promoting tolerance at the fetal-maternal interface. HLA-G is also expressed by thymic epitelial, cornea, mesenchymal stem cells, nail matrix, pancreatic beta cells, erythroid, and endothelial precursors. HLA-G can be neo-expressed in adult tissues in pathological conditions, and its expression has been documented autoimmune disorders, viral infections, and cancer. In the latter setting de novo HLA-G expression is associated with the capability of tumor cells to evade the immune control. In the last decade it has become evident that HLA-G expression on T cells and antigenpresenting cells confers to these cells tolerogenic properties. This Research Topic focused on i) summarizing updated clinical and immunological evidences that HLA-G expression is associate with beneficial or detrimental tolerance, ii) gathering new insights into the mechanisms governing the expression of HLA-G in healthy and pathological conditions, such as pre-eclampsia, and iii) examining the mechanisms underlying HLA-G mediated tolerance.

Les moustiquaires imprégnées de pyréthrinoïdes constituent l’un des outils préventifs dans cette lutte : leur utilisation est simple et permet une protection individuelle et collective durable et accessible à tous. Cependant, depuis plus de dix ans, Anopheles gambiae, le principal vecteur du paludisme en Afrique, est devenu résistant à de nombreux insecticides. Cette résistance pose des questions d’ordre fondamental et opérationnel : le comportement des moustiques s’en trouve-t-il modifié ?     Description: Kazimierz Moczarski (1907–1975) was a journalist, soldier, and political prisoner. His life exemplifies a Central European biography under Nazism and Comunism. The addictive and moving Civility in Uncivil Times reveals the story of a man who defended law and democracy all his life. Moczarski fought for it in the authoritarian Poland of the 1930s. During the Second World War, he partook in the resistance movement. After the war, he spent eleven years in a Stalinist prison, including nine months in one cell with the Nazi Jürgen Stroop, who commanded the brutal pacification of the Warsaw Ghetto. The communists imprisoned Moczarski’s wife. After release, he rebuilt the broken marriage, rejoined social life, and wrote a work about meeting Stroop. Translated into many languages, Conversations with the Executioner is a thorough study of totalitarianism.

The morbidity and mortality of the infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been significant, and various waves of disease outbreaks initially overwhelmed hospitals and clinics in many countries and continue to do so. This influences everyone, and public health countermeasures have been dramatic in terms of their impact on employment, social systems, and mental health. This Special Issue collection follows on from the Special Issue “COVID-19: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives” and provides an avenue for authors from various disciplines to provide feedback on the response to and our future global preparedness for COVID-19, as well as to disseminate critical information about SARS-CoV-2 and the associated COVID-19 pandemic.

    Description: L'image est un média, peut-être le premier, le plus ancien. Depuis Lascaux, les individus, les groupes, les pouvoirs politiques et religieux en ont fait un allié ou un péril. Tout au long du xxe siècle, les images se sont immiscées partout. Acheminées par le cinéma, la télévision ou la presse écrite, véhiculées par Internet, elles s'installent au cœur du public comme du privé.     Description: The book is a comparative case study of collective memory in two small communities situated on two Central-European borderlands. Despite different pre-war histories, Ukrainian Zhovkva (before 1939 Polish Żółkiew) and Polish Krzyż (before 1945 German Kreuz) were to share a common fate of many European localities, destroyed and rebuilt in a completely new shape. As a result of war, and post-war ethnic cleansing and displacement, they lost almost all of their pre-war inhabitants and were repopulated by new people. Based on more than 150 oral history interviews, the book describes the process of reconstruction of social microcosm, involving the reader in a journey through the lives of real people entangled in the dramatic historical events of the 20th century.

    Description: Why does the history of dogmatism deserve our attention? This open access book analyses uses of the term, following dogmatism from Victorian Britain to Cold War America, examining why it came to be regarded as a vice, and how understandings of its meaning have evolved. Whilst the field of scientific thought is committed to continuous innovation, ideas about dogmatism – with their roots in ancient philosophy – are pervasive in scientific thought today. Carrying connotations of both vice and ecclesiastical authority, the term’s prevalence during the ‘age of science’, and the rise of new thought categories such as totalitarianism and creationism, prompted scholars to repeat the old wisdom that science is incompatible with dogmatism. Tracing the concept across decades and different disciplines, Paul and Stoeger demonstrate how it has survived not only the passage of time, but changes in language and scientific methodologies.     Description: Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders and is characterized by recurrent seizures resulting from abnormal neuronal excitability in the central nervous system. Despite the availability of thirty-six antiseizure medications, about one-third of patients with epilepsy do not respond to the pharmacological treatment and develop a so-called “pharmaco-resistant epilepsy” or “refractory epilepsy.” Thus, there is an urgent need to develop novel, effective therapies based on novel mechanisms underlying neuronal excitability that leads to seizures. Organisée à Strasbourg, avec le soutien efficace du Strasbourg Université Club, elle a largement profité du rayonnement international de la Cité, en étant accueillie au Centre Européen de la Jeunesse et en ouvrant ses séquences d'analyse, de présentation d'expériences novatrices et de débats à des compétences européennes de premier plan. « Le sport, c'est la santé » : ce type d'adage à la vie opère comme un écran de fumée par rapport à la réflexion et à la valorisation d'une action cohérente, d'autant que les termes de sport et de santé recouvrent chacun des notions différentes et pas toujours complémentaires. Comment renouer avec l'éducation sportive - chez l'athlète assidu comme chez des pratiquants ayant une simple activité d'entretien physique - sinon en remettant à l'ordre du jour l'examen des interactions dynamiques entre sport et santé ? « Sport et santé » composent une question majeure posée à et par une société plus que jamais marquée par la sédentarité, le vieillissement de la population et des inégalités socio-économiques persistantes. A l'occasion de cette USE, chercheurs universitaires, enseignants d'EPS, éducateurs et dirigeants sportifs, élus politiques et acteurs administratifs, journalistes, porteurs de projets ont pu se montrer à la hauteur des enjeux en ébauchant des orientations pertinentes.

The essay then moves on to explore the more recent rereading by Angelo Del Boca and Igiaba Scego of respectively Indro Montanelli’s XX Battaglione Eritreo (1936) and Errico Emanuelli’s Settimana nera (1961). By bringing together and rereading these texts, the essay maps the transformations of Italianness from colonial to postcolonial times and reveals how colonial identity relied on a series of gender, racial and sexual tropes of exploration and conquest.

    Cross Talk between Lymph Node Lymphatic Endothelial Cells and T Cells in Inflammation and Cancer (2021)

    Description: Lymphocytes constantly survey the lymph nodes in search for potential infection by a pathogen. They enter the afferent lymphatic vessel that serves as a conduit to transport the motile lymphocytes to the draining lymph node. Lymphatic vessels (LVs) are present in most vascularized tissues. They are traditionally regarded as passive conduits for soluble antigens and leukocytes. Afferent LVs begin as blind ended capillaries, which give rise to collecting vessels that merge and connect with draining lymph nodes (dLNs). Initial lymphatic capillaries are composed of Lymphatic Endothelial Cells (LECs) connected by discontinuous cell junctions, which join to form larger collecting lymphatic vessels, and ultimately feed into the LN subcapsular sinus. Within the LN, LECs are localized to the subcapsular, cortical, and medullary sinuses, where they interact with incoming and exiting leukocytes. LECs, and in general LN stromal cells, have emerged in the recent years as active players in the immune response. In support to this,studies have shown that the immune response generated during inflammation and under pathologic conditions is accompanied by modeling of the LVs and generation of new lymphatics, a process known as lymphangiogenesis. These facts strongly suggest that LECs and stromal LN cells in general, are not inert players but rather are part of the immune response by organizing immune cells movement, exchanging information and supplying survival factors. The purpose of this research topic is to review the role of the LECs during immune homeostasis and cancer. Considering the critical role of lymphangiogenesis in many pathologies like chronic and acute inflammation, autoimmunity, wound healing, graft rejection, and tumor metastasis, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern the cross talks between the LECs and immune cells during homeostasis and inflammation.

    Description: In this Special Issue, we have published papers on the health-promoting effects of nutraceuticals from different sources, and their effects in different pathologies. Extracts from plants have been analyzed, for example, extracts from olive leaves, Mikania micrantha, the devil’s claw, raspberries and others, alongside marine phytoplankton, egg-yolk and marketed dietary supplements. The effects of these extracts and dietary supplements have been studied in diseases associated with obesity, and in diseases where inflammation pathways are involved. The effectiveness of resveratrol and curcumin to support the anticancer activity of cisplatin has also been reported, as well as the ability of devil’s claw root extract to stimulate the CB2 receptors in synoviocytes in osteoarthritis patients. The anti-oxidant effect of marine phytoplankton has been studied on muscle damage, both in humans and in an animal model, and the effects of the metabolite of antocianin were analyzed in a mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Finally, reviews on the use of lactoferrin, ω3 and ω6 and abscisic acid have been reported, in addition to the crosstalk between prostate cancer and microbiota inflammation. Although it is not yet possible to draw definitive conclusions on the use of nutraceuticals, several mechanisms of action for many of them have been further clarified.

    Description: Development of strategies to assist the movement of poorly permeable molecules across biological barriers has long been the goal of drug delivery science. In the last three decades, there has been an exponential increase in advanced drug delivery systems that aim to address this issue. However, most proprietary delivery technologies that have progressed to clinical development are based on permeation enhancers (PEs) that have a history of safe use in man. This Special Issue entitled “Transmucosal Absorption Enhancers in the Drug Delivery Field” aims to present the current state-of-the-art in the application of PEs to improve drug absorption. Emphasis is placed on identification of novel permeation enhancers, mechanisms of barrier alteration, physicochemical properties of PEs that contribute to optimal enhancement action, new delivery models to assess PEs, studies assessing safety of PEs, approaches to assist translation of PEs into effective oral, nasal, ocular and vaginal dosage forms and combining PEs with other delivery strategies.

    Description: Scale up and implementation of new point-of-care (POC) diagnostics is a global health priority to enable the adoption of new evidence-based POC diagnostics and to replicate and extend the reach of POC diagnostics. Global private and public sector agencies have significantly increased their investment in the development of POC diagnostics to meet the unmet needs of patients in resource-limited settings, particularly disease burdened settings with limited access to laboratory infrastructure. However, previous research has demonstrated that the availability of health technologies in these settings does not always guarantee patient-centered outcomes. The applicability, effectiveness and sustainability of diagnostic technologies is affected by the involvement of all stakeholders during planning and implementation, which must be relevant to each specific context and sensitive to local culture. Factors such as infrastructure, resources, values and characteristics of participants can influence the implementation, scalability and sustainability of health interventions such as POC diagnostics. This book, “Implementation and Scale up of Point of Care (POC) Diagnostics in Resource-Limited Settings”, presents literature reviews and primary research studies focusing on the implementation and scale up of POC diagnostics in resource-limited settings.

Les principales modalités d'accueil des réfugiés montrent bien les obstacles à l'intégration comme les limites d'une assistance humanitaire dont l'action reste plus curative que préventive. Mais la paix revenue, le retour et la réintégration des réfugiés dans leur pays d'origine se heurtent encore à des difficultés politiques, juridiques et économiques qui sont autant de freins à la reconstruction nationale et qui, par là même, dessinent les migrations internationales du futur. Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.

    Description: This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language.

    Description: En Aquitaine, première région vitivinicole française, la vigne est présente sur la majeure partie des territoires, et la filière, avec ses exploitations en Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, ses caves coopératives et ses maisons de négoce, constitue une forte composante de l'économie régionale. Les grands crus sont les principaux référents pour l'image des vins aquitains et tirent vers le haut l'ensemble du vignoble, et cependant les vins de Bordeaux occultent la diversité et la richesse des vins aquitains, ce qui nuit à une image de l'Aquitaine comme pays du vin. Vignobles et vins en Aquitaine s'attache à étudier ce paradoxe. La première partie, dans une synthèse de nombreux écrits de recherche, explique comment les histoires agraire, économique et humaine de la région ont fait du vin une spécificité aquitaine, inscrite dans les paysages et les sociétés, et évalue le rôle de la « place de Bordeaux ». La seconde partie propose des éclairages plus circonstanciés, regroupés en deux thèmes : les facteurs et marqueurs de la construction des territoires viticoles constituent un premier axe d'étude, suivi par les représentations et la défense de l'image qui forment un second champ. Les territoires viticoles aquitains sont des constructions sociales complexes, génératrices d'une identité forte et porteuse. Cet ouvrage a été réalisé par la collaboration d'historiens, géographes, économistes ou œnologues au sein de la MSHA et dans le cadre de programmes pluridisciplinaires du CERVIN (composante de l'UMR ADES). Il soulève des problématiques telles que l'articulation entre société et terroir, les effets déformants du système AOC ou les logiques territoriales « de clocher » qui ont perturbé la création d'une identité régionale. Les recherches de ces différents auteurs nous permettent de comprendre comment les viticulteurs aquitains ont été en mesure de maintenir une production que le monde entier envie encore malgré la crise.

    Description: Neural control of human motor output and how it is modified by alterations in physical activity levels is complex and multidimensional. The use of various experimental designs has vastly increased our knowledge of how the nervous system integrates descending, segmental, and ascending information to produce motor outputs, yet there is still much to learn. A more complete picture of the neurophysiology underlying the control of human motor outputs may prove useful in guiding rehabilitation programs aimed at reducing motor impairments following disease or injury. The purpose of this Special Issue is to collect original articles that explore neural excitability in various states. Studies examining neural excitability on a moment-to-moment basis (acute) or following prolonged periods of exercise or skill training and disuse (chronic) are encouraged. Original research studies using various experimental measures (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation, transmastoid electrical stimulation, single motor unit recordings, electroencephalography, and measures of spinal reflexes) in various states (e.g., fatigued, non-fatigued, and resting) during different types of motor outputs (tonic or dynamic) are encouraged. Experimental studies and literature reviews are welcome.

    Description: The story of the Communist Party of Australia has been told in various ways. Until now, however, archival collections that have borne on this story have been relatively inaccessible to the ordinary, interested reader. This book begins to redress that deficiency by bringing together 85 key documents from the Russian State Archives of Social and Political History (RGASPI), selected from a collection of thousands of documents concerning the relations between the Communist International and the Communist Party of Australia. The selection focuses on the relationship between the CPA and the Comintern because the activities of the CPA are essentially incomprehensible without understanding the international communist context within which the CPA operated. That context was dominated by the newly-created Soviet state and its decision to authorize and utilize a network of communist parties throughout the world. The documents in this work suggest three major propositions about the relationship between the CPA and the Comintern. First, that the Comintern was crucial in the formation of the CPA, via its emissaries, instructions and authority. Second, that the Comintern played a major role in directing the policies of the CPA in domestic matters (not to mention in international matters, where the Comintern’s decisions were supreme). And third, that the leadership of the CPA was, from 1929 onwards, shaped, trained and authorized by the Comintern. With access to the documents, readers now have a chance not just to hear the voices of the times, but to make their own judgements about the relationship between the CPA and Moscow. The book also includes two extended introductory essays that outline the development of the Comintern and its relations with the CPA, as well as supporting materials that provide information on individuals, organizations and tactics mentioned within the documents themselves.

Cette expertise collégiale menée par l’IRD, réalisée par une quinzaine de chercheurs à la demande du ministère de la Santé du Mali et de l’Institut d’ophtalmologie tropicale d’Afrique (Mali), s’attache à décrire l’état actuel de la lutte contre cette conjonctivite cécitante d’origine infectieuse. En dressant le bilan des stratégies déjà à l’œuvre, notamment celle du programme CHANCE de l’OMS, cette expertise cherche à définir les conditions et les perspectives de cette maladie.

    Description: Zum niederländischen Militär in der frühen Neuzeit gehörte es, dass Soldaten regelmäßig gemustert wurden. Die Schlagkräftigkeit des Militärs sollte aufrechterhalten werden. Dazu reisten Musterungskommissare in die Garnisonsorte und begutachteten die Truppen. Neben ihren Amtsgeschäften widmeten die Kommissare sich oftmals intensiv "touristischen" Vergnügungen. Die Berichte geben in niederländischer Sprache daher nicht nur Einblicke in das Musterungswesen selbst, sondern vor allem in das Reisen im 18. Jahrhundert. Dabei lassen sie in deutlicher Form das soziale Leben der Zeit nachvollziehen.

    Description: Em 1867, ao prefaciar uma das suas primeiras recolhas de literatura popular, Teófilo Braga, sugerindo uma imagem catastrófica da situação do país, referiu-se desta forma ao seu trabalho: "coligir a poesia popular portuguesa agora, no momento de transe, é como a garrafa ao mar que se atirava nos naufrágios: é para que se saiba que existiu este povo, que também sofreu e cantou". Tal sentimento nacionalista jamais viria a abandonar a sua obra antropológica, o que aliás se explica dada a matriz romântica em que ela assentava. E mesmo quando Teófilo Braga se orientou gradualmente para preocupações de cunho mais científico, isso não significou uma verdadeira ruptura com a perspectiva inicial. São pois os ecos da problemática da identidade nacional, na sua dupla vertente romântica e científica, que podemos reencontrar nestes Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português que, de resto, e independentemente do espírito com que foi concebida e realizada a sua colectânea, propõem ao leitor um conjunto de narrativas cujo fascínio permanece intacto, constituindo além disso um valiosíssimo acervo de informações em áreas que, como a Antropologia e a História das Mentalidades, se dão como objectivo a tarefa de reflectir sobre as múltiplas manifestações das sociedades tradicionais. Após termos procedido à publicação de O Povo Português nos Seus Costumes, Crenças e Tradições, também da autoria de Teófilo Braga, que tem sido considerada a primeira grande obra de conjunto da etnografia nacional, impunha-se esta reedição dos Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português, que decerto formam, juntamente com a recolha de Adolfo Coelho disponível nesta colecção, uma das mais importantes colectâneas de narrativas populares do nosso país. Também na presente reedição se manteve a divisão da obra em dois volumes, tal como sucedia na sua edição original.

    Description: Les grands corps de l’État n’ont pas toujours bonne presse, mais, en même temps, ils fascinent. Créé au XVIIIe siècle, le corps des Mines n’a cessé de contribuer à la construction économique du pays. Passés par l’École polytechnique et l’École des mines, les ingénieurs du corps ont surveillé et, souvent, directement encadré les secteurs de l’industrie et de l’énergie. Ils ont également joué un rôle éminent dans le domaine scientifique, leurs contributions allant des sciences « dures » (mathématiques et physique, avec Henri Poincaré, chimie avec Henry Le Chatelier) à l’économie, avec Maurice Allais, le seul Français ayant reçu le prix Nobel d’économie, et aussi la sociologie, avec Frédéric Le Play, considéré comme l’un des précurseurs de cette discipline. Industriel dans son essence, industrialiste dans son esprit, ce corps de fonctionnaires a souvent adopté des approches libérales, mais, a contrario, il a souvent impulsé un patriotisme économique de bon aloi dans le cadre de « grands programmes » d’État. Il restait à la richesse de cette expérience, à la fois technique, scientifique et administrative, à se constituer en histoire, à se « conscientiser ». Telle était l’ambition du colloque dont les actes sont présentés dans ce volume. Organisé dans le cadre de la célébration du deux centième anniversaire du décret du 18 novembre 1810 qui a organisé le « Corps impérial des Ingénieurs des Mines », ce colloque historique s’est attaché à mettre en lumière le rôle joué au service de la France par ces hauts fonctionnaires à formation scientifique et technique.

    Description: L'épistémologie sociale est une analyse de la dimension sociale de la connaissance. Son point de départ est le constat que bien des phénomènes ne nous sont connus que par l'intermédiaire des autres et donc que la connaissance a non seulement des sources directes, celles auxquelles le sujet a lui-même accès, mais aussi des sources indirectes reposant sur la confiance ou sur l'autorité accordée à autrui. Elle s'intéresse donc aux conditions de la transmission de l'information venant d'autrui, et aux relations de confiance et d'autorité épistémiques, notamment dans le domaine des sciences. Mais ses préoccupations sont plus larges et concernent tout ce qui a trait à la dimension sociale de la connaissance: la construction, au cours d'interactions, de justifications recevables ou acceptables; les modes ordinaires de pensée et de raisonnement; ou encore les relations de coopération et de collaboration dans une « communauté épistémique ». De plus elle reprend des questions qui étaient au cœur de la théorie durkeimienne de la connaissance, celle par exemple des croyances collectives, ou l'idée d'un sujet collectif du savoir. Par là elle se rapproche des social studies of science, tout en s'en distinguant par l'adoption d'un point de vue normatif et par le refus du relativisme. Ce volume présente un ensemble de recherches représentatives de ces différentes préoccupations. Elles ont en commun de reconnaître la spécificité de l'idée de normes de la connaissance, et, s'agissant de concevoir la dimension sociale de celle-ci, de se garder des formes radicales de holisme, pour lesquelles les groupes sociaux sont des entités sui generis.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017.     Description: Currently, cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and is the most complex and challenging disease known to humankind. Due to the complex underlying mechanisms of tumorigenesis and tumor metastasis, as well as the intrinsic limitations of conventional cancer therapies, the effective treatment of cancer remains a great challenge. Novel therapeutic strategies with superior anticancer ability urgently need to be discovered. In recent years, nano-drug delivery systems have been extensively investigated and applied as alternatives to conventional cancer treatments. Cancer nanomedicines aim to achieve the targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the tumor site, utilizing strategies such as passive targeting, active targeting and stimuli-triggered drug release, while simultaneously decreasing drug accumulation in normal tissues, which together lead to improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects. Currently, several cancer nanomedicines are in regular use, and several others are in various stages of development.This Special Issue will highlight recent progress in the development of novel nanomedicines and targeted drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.

    Description: Dieser Sammelband setzt sich mit den Deutschlandbildern in Belgien bis zum Beginn der deutschen Okkupation im Jahre 1940 auseinander. Betrachtet werden diese aus Sicht unterschiedlicher Geisteswissenschaften wie Philosophie, Literatur, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft. Die traditionellen Topoi der deutschen Imagologie, die überall in Europa eine große Resonanz gefunden haben (das romantische Deutschland, das Land der Dichter und Denker, aber ab dem Krieg von 1870 auch das preußische Feindbild), werden dabei in Betracht gezogen. Konstitutiv für den Prozess der Identitätsbildung in Belgien bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg war die deutsch-germanische Komponente, die in der Metapher der sog. âme belge als Kultursynthese zum Ausdruck kam. Der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs hat hier besonders traumatisch gewirkt, was zur Folge hatte, dass diese partielle „Zugehörigkeit“ Belgiens zur deutschen Kultursphäre drastisch neuevaluiert wurde, unabhängig von der Schaffung eines deutschsprachigen Gebiets in Belgien durch den Versailler Vertrag.

    Pas de fumet sans feu : cuisine et vie quotidienne auprès des moines de Tournus (IXe-XVIe siècle) (2021)

    Description: C’est sur un espace utilisé depuis la fin du ixe siècle, occupé aux environs de l’an mil par une étonnante construction de bois à sol de béton et à vocation funéraire, que s’implante au xiie siècle la nouvelle cuisine de l’abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus. Lié au réfectoire voisin, le bâtiment empiète à l’époque sur des niveaux de circulation extérieure. Sa conception architecturale est ambitieuse, avec un plan centré sur un octogone entouré de vastes cheminées à contrecœur semi-circulaire qui évoque des modèles de l’ouest de la France - disparus pour la plupart, à l’exception ou presque de la cuisine de Fontevraud en Anjou. Toutefois, au contraire de ces exemples connus uniquement pour leur architecture, c’est la conservation en place des dépôts d’utilisation intérieurs, compressés à force d’accumulation et de piétinements, qui fait la richesse du spécimen tournusien, illustrant de façon saisissante le quotidien de cette cuisine jusqu’au milieu du xvie siècle. Pendant quatre siècles, c’est autour de grandes langues de cendres témoignant d’une cuisson dans la braise, étalées depuis les quatre foyers jusqu’au milieu de la pièce, que se concentre l’essentiel de l’activité. Les postes de préparation sont trahis par autant de tas de déchets spécialisés : coquilles d’œufs, fragments d’os, écailles de poisson… Une conduite d’eau et un drain de pierres traversent la pièce, portiques ou paravents de bois sont déplacés sans cesse. La permanence de déchets de consommation carnée sur le même site depuis la fin du ixe siècle, l’abondance des restes de poisson dans la cuisine, permettent de retracer l’évolution de l’approvisionnement et de l’alimentation des moines et de leurs familiers laïcs. Quant aux nombreux fragments de poteries, également présents depuis les premiers niveaux, ils offrent sur huit siècles, avec d’autres sites tournusiens, un référentiel de productions en usage dans la région. À cela s’ajoutent quelques restes d’ustensiles en métal, verre ou pierre, tels cette probable tête de robinet des xiie/xiiie siècles ou ce mortier décoré du xive, retrouvé cassé au fond d’une cheminée : ils éclairent, plus ponctuellement, d’autres aspects de la préparation culinaire ou du service de la table. De tout point de vue, en plein contexte monastique, le matériel recueilli trahit les usages d’une population aristocratique. Tels sont les apports d’une fouille minutieuse à l’emplacement de cet édifice crucial de l’abbaye médiévale, un peu oublié à Tournus depuis sa destruction au xviie siècle, mais ressuscité par cet ouvrage finement documenté.

Cet ouvrage rassemble ainsi toutes les données pertinentes, validées et mises en forme pour être utilisées non seulement par les personnels de santé (médecins, pharmaciens, infirmiers), mais aussi par les agents touristiques ainsi que par les particuliers pour se protéger des nuisances et des maladies à vecteurs qui constituent de préoccupants problèmes de santé publique.

    Description: It is long known that many cells can shed extracellular vesicles, small membrane-enclosed cell fragments. Although the existence of extracellular vesicles has been recognized for many years, researchers are only beginning to understand their physiologic significance. Several recent studies have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles released from cells serve as a mode of cellular communication. They can carry diverse molecular payload (e.g. nucleic acids, bioactive lipids and proteins) to distal organs and recipient cells. Extracellular vesicles can be classified into three major groups: exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies. All these types of extracellular vesicles can be found in a variety of biologic specimen and their numbers, distribution and composition may serve as biomarkers for various disorders, including cardiovascular disease. Although extracellular vesicle-mediated processes are currently best characterized in the fields of cancer biology and neurobiology, evidence is accumulating that extracellular vesicles play a key role in the pathophysiology of diabetes, thrombosis, inflammation and cardiovascular calcification. In this Research Topic, we invited review and methodological articles that advance our understanding of extracellular vesicle-related processes in vascular biology.

Cependant, les vauderies survenues à Lyon et Arras au XVe siècle comme les cas de possession du XVIIe siècle sont autant de témoignages de la présence de la sorcellerie dans les villes européennes. Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

L’or blanc et les nouveaux eldorados ne sont pas qu’un enjeu économique ; sont également en jeu les influences et les rapports de force entre les pays de la sous-région du Grand Mékong, à l’image des importantes transactions foncières transnationales. Pour mieux comprendre la transition agraire actuelle impulsée par le boom de l’hévéa, les auteurs de cet ouvrage ont tenu à revenir sur l’histoire, l’époque de la colonisation européenne et les expériences socialistes. L’ouvrage analyse également la capacité des populations locales à résister aux pressions des nouveaux arrivants et la compétition que représentent les plantations d’hévéa de grande taille mécanisées.

    Description: The Finnish novelist Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo’s (1919–2000) main work, the Iijoki series, consists of 26 novels (comprising ca. 17 000 pages) and was written in 1971–1998. In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    How to improve immune reconstitution in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation? (2021)

    Description: Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is widely used in the treatment of haematological malignancies as a form of immunotherapy acting through a graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) reaction. This curative allogeneic response can be associated with severe drawbacks, such as frequent and severe graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and a long-lasting immunodeficiency, especially now with the development of innovative strategies such as umbilical cord blood transplantation or transplants from haplo-identical family donors (Haplo-HSCT). In the long-term follow-up of these patients, severe post-transplant infections, relapse or secondary malignancies may be directly related to persistent immune defects.Reconstitution of the different lymphocyte populations (B, T, NK, NKT) and antigen presenting cells of myeloid origin (monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells) should be considered not only quantitatively but especially qualitatively, in terms of functional subsets. Immune deficiency leading to an increased susceptibility to infections lasts for more than a year. Although infections that occur in the first month mostly result from a deficiency in both granulocytes and mononuclear cells (MNC), later post-engraftment infections are due to a deficiency in MNC subsets, primarily CD4 T-cells and B-cells. T-cell reconstitution has been extensively studied because of the central role of T-cells in mediating both GvHD, evidenced by the reduced incidence of this complication following T-Cell depletion, and a GvL effect as shown by DLI. In the recent years there has been renewed interest in the role of NK-cells, especially in the context of Haplo-HSCT, and in B-cell reconstitution.This Frontiers Research Topic will provide state of the art knowledge of the mechanisms of immune reconstitution in an allogeneic environment, in order to improve monitoring and therapeutic intervention in allo-HSCT patients.

    Description: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian.

    Description: The dissertation analyses dream images in romanticist art, with regards to inherent dreamanalogue strategies in consideration of contemporary dream theory and aesthetics, with a focus on the period between 1820 and 1840. The study does not provide a typological, iconographical or motif-historical collection of samples, but analyses different aspects of selected artworks which represent a wide range in terms of their contextual, formal and topographical heterogeneity, and overcomes the existing stereotypical classification in the context of romanticist art reflection. The study identifies that, beyond the contextual-iconographical dimension, the dream serves as an aesthetical category because it is reflected not only as a motif but also in relation to its dramaturgy. In the romantic awareness of the difficulty of an adequate representation of invisible images, the nonlinear, associative, ciphered, space- and time-simultaneous structure of the dream is adapted as a method, and is staged by varied and differentiated configurations. This is mirrored by comprehensive or formal concepts (genre, technique, media and interdisciplinary), as well as in fragmentary structures (sketches and drawings), in materiality (transparency and colour) or arabesque and combinatory production principles. The study contains three chapters: after a general introduction to the subject, the analysis of the current state of research and the demonstration of the methodology in the first chapter, the second chapter focuses on contemporary dream discourses (especially the theories of Gotthilf Heinrich Schubert and Carl Gustav Carus) and the constitutive role of the philosophy of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling. By also involving the literary concepts of dreams the romantic awareness of the deficiency of the visible image compared to the invisible, which forces an avoidance of a mimetic art perception, becomes obvious. The third chapter forms the main body of the study. On the basis of selected dream images it analyses the different artistic strategies and conditions of reception. The first section of the third chapter focuses on artist dream imagery, namely the Musician’s Dream by Caspar David Friedrich, Raphael’s Dream by Franz and Johannes Riepenhausen and the Dream of Erwin von Steinbach by Moritz von Schwind. The analysis indicates that the dreaming artist serves as mise-en-abyme of the dream-analogue productive and reflexive process, and the artwork itself. The second section of chapter three makes landscape spaces accessible as imaginative concepts and projections of emotional states, according to current literature studies. Landscape spaces serve as patterns for reflection processes, which is explored on the basis of The Dreamer by Caspar David Friedrich. The third section of the third chapter focuses on a combinatory and arabesque concept as a dream-analogue and self-reflexive strategy – the collage-like compilation, association and transformation of heterogeneous elements which are analysed on the basis of the artworks Dream of Adam by Moritz von Schwind and The Evening by Clemens Brentano.
    Description: Die Arbeit untersucht Bildstrategien von Traumdarstellungen der deutschen Romantik unter Berücksichtigung der zeitgenössischen Traumtheorie und Ästhetik mit einer Fokussierung auf den Zeitraum zwischen 1820 und 1840. Die Studie geht der Frage nach, ob die Traumdarstellung jenseits ihrer ikonographischen Dimension auch als ästhetisches Konzept fungiert, indem die Dramaturgie des Traumes als Methode eingesetzt wird. Die romantische Präferenz für das Unbewusste – gerade auch hinsichtlich der Kunstproduktion – zeigt sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit der philosophisch-literarischen Frühromantik und kulminiert in einer Ästhetik der inneren Bilder.     Description: The PN Kammalia-Tarawa in an Old Assyrian tablet seems to be the earliest reference of the deity Darawa. The Luwian background this deity is also apparent, e.g., from the plural form DDa-ra-ú-wa-an-zi or from those texts mentioned in CTH 457 and the etymological interpretation of the divine name to the Luwian verb tarāwi(ya)-. Since the early Middle Hittite period Darawa also found her way into the Hattian milieu and as a goddess connected with the family life, she is mentioned several times in festivals for a queen (CTH 646), but also in the Hittite Prayer to the Sun-goddess of the Netherworld (CTH 371) which is – in my opinion – the only Hittite texts mentioning Darawa within the “pantheon of the state”. Texts from the Hurrian and Kizzuwatnaean milieu (e.g., CTH 351) also refer several times to Darawa, but this is clearly the result of a secondary and marginal dissemination of the goddess. In conclusion one might say that Darawa from her Luwian background also came into contact with various milieus of the “Hittite pantheon”, functioning as a goddess providing good (and evil) to humans in everyday life.

    Description: The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted,and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

In contrast to conventional a/ß T-cells, the available number of germline genes coding for T-cell receptor (TCR) variable elements of γδ T-cells is very small. Moreover, there is a prefential localization of γδ T-cells expressing given Vgamma and Vdelta genes in certain tissues. In humans, γδ T-cells expressing the Vg9Vd2-encoded TCR account for anywhere between 50 and 〉95% of peripheral blood γδ T-cells, whereas cells expressing non-Vd2 genes dominate in mucosal tissues. In mice, there is an ordered appearance of γδ T-cell „waves“ during embryonic development, resulting in preferential localization of γδ T-cells expressing distinct VgammaVdelta genes in the skin, the reproductive organs, or gut epithelia. The major function of γδ T-cells resides in local immunosurveillance and immune defense against infection and malignancy. This is supported by the identification of ligands that are selectively recognized by the γδ TCR. As an example, human Vgamma9Vdelta2 T-cells recognize phosphorylated metabolites („phosphoantigens“) that are secreted by many pathogens but can also be overproduced by tumor cells, providing a basis for a role of these γδ T-cells in both anti-infective and anti-tumor immunity. Similarly, the recognition of endothelial protein C receptor by human non-Vdelta2 γδ T-cells has recently been identified to provide a link for the role for such γδ T-cells in immunity against epithelial tumor cells and cytomegalovirus-infected endothelial cells. In addition to „classical“ functions such as cytokine production and cytotoxicity, recent studies suggest that subsets of γδ T-cells can exert additional functions such as regulatory activity and – quite surpisingly – „professional“ antigen-presenting capacity. It is currently not well known how this tremendous extent of functional plasticity is regulated and what is the extent of γδ TCR ligand diversity. Due to their non-MHC-restricted recognition of unusual stress-associated ligands, γδ T-cells have raised great interest as to their potential translational application in cell-based immunotherapy. Topics of this Research Focus include: Molecular insights into the activation and differentiation requirements of γδ T-cells, role of pyrophosphates and butyrophilin molecules for the activation of human γδ T-cells, role of γδ T-cells in tumor immunity and in other infectious and non-infectious diseases, and many others.
