Notizen: A substance promoting the growth of mammalian cells in vitro has been isolated from Bacto-peptone (Difco Labs., Detroit) and identified as 6,8-dihydroxypurine. This compound, which is isomeric with xanthine(2,6-dihydroxypurine), enhances the growth of one Chinese hamster and some other cell lines; xanthine itself is inactive. The biological action of the compound is discussed.

Notizen: The effects of lanthanum ions upon amoeboid movement and upon the redistribution of dense cytoplasmic inclusions following centrifugation were investigated in Amoeba discoides. Treatment with low lanthanum concentrations produced a characteristic inhibited condition in which locomotion ceased while saltatory movements continued. The resorting of stratified cytoplasm by local internal cytoplasmic flow was unaffected. This contrasted with p-hydroxymercuribenzoate treatment which inhibited both locomotion and saltatory movements. The inhibitory effects of lanthanum ions were antagonised by calcium ions but not by magnesium ions. It is reasoned that lanthanum competes for a peripheral binding site thereby disrupting a calcium-mediated regulatory mechanism of amoeboid movement.

Beschreibung: This review of NASA contributions to the technology of fracture mechanics illustrates a fundamental role of the Space Agency in a single technical area. While primarily pursuing its goal of minimizing the weight of flight hardware, NASA engineers have generated innovations having broad impact in nonaerospace communities. A review is given of how these specific NASA innovations are communicated to the technical community outside the Space Agency, and current application areas are outlined.

Notizen: We have isolated several cell lines which are temperature-sensitive for growth. One of these appears to be temperature-sensitive for cytokinesis. It was isolated from a Syrian hamster cell line by selecting cells which were not killed by 1 μg/ml cytosine arabinoside at 39° but which grew normally at 31°. It shows an increased proportion of binucleate cells when shifted to the non-permissive temperature and time-lapse photomicroscopy shows that a high proportion of attempted mitoses fail at 39°, apparently at the stage of cytokinesis. The cells which have failed to complete mitosis reattach to the plate and have two normal-size nuclei but otherwise behave normally.

Beschreibung: A closed cylindrical shell under uniform internal pressure has a slit around a portion of its circumference. Linear shallow shell theory predicts inverse square-root-type singularities in certain of the stresses at the crack tips. This paper reports the computed strength of these singularities for different values of a dimensionless parameter based on crack length, shell radius and shell thickness.

Beschreibung: The fully antisymmetric problem for a cylindrical shell with a circumferential crack is considered. The solution of the problem is reduced to that of a system of singular integral equations of the first kind. As an example the torsion of the cylinder is discussed and membrane and bending components of the stress intensity factor ratio are given.

Notizen: This report adds to the available information on comparative histology of mammalian bone and introduces a semi-quantitative approach to its study. Bone samples consisted of large fragments of rib tibia and/or femur from humans, laboratory rodents and from animals that died at the Bronx Zoological Gardens. A total of 44 bone specimens representing six mammalian orders were available. Decalcified paraffin-embedded 10 μm histological cross-sections were examined at × 320. Qualitative observations were supplemented with measurements of the frequency and size distributions of Haversian and non-Haversian canals. The relative distribution of lacunae was also ascertained. The standard textbook description of mammalian bone as consisting mainly of secondary osteons was not generally seen except in Primate (especially human) bone. Rats showed a few scattered osteon-like structures, but bones of Marsupialia, Insectivora, Artiodactyla and Carnivora were entirely devoid of them. Generally, vascular bone with longitudinal canals was seen except in Lorisidae which showed a reticular type of bone. The distribution of primary longitudinal canals and the number of “filled” or “apparently empty” lacunae/unit area of bone varied both inter-species and among different areas in the same bone. Large areas of acellular and non-vascular bone were encountered in all specimens. This preliminary study revealed that species differences i bone microstructure involve the relative distribution of the same basic components which lend themselves to quantitative treatment. Comparative investigations of bone histology at many ontogenetic and phylogenetic levels should yield significant quantitative information in bone biology.

Beschreibung: Identification of the failure mechanism characteristic for the more widely used carbon fibers in epoxy matrices under tensile loads as an aid toward improvements and more reliable predictions of the performance of these composites. The presented results pertain to high-strength, high-modulus, and low-modulus fibers in unmodified and modified epoxy novolac matrices.

Notizen: Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies were conducted on the antennal sensory sensilla of the hymenopteran parasitoid, Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck, of the family Braconidae. Distinct morphological differences were found between the chemoreceptors of the male and female. Curved, non-fluted, thin-walled sensilla were found to be very abundant on the male and restricted in location and number on the female. Trichoid, placoid and fluted basiconic sensilla were numerous on the antennal flagella of both sexes. Smooth basiconic sensilla were restricted in number to one per flagellar segment in both sexes. Behavioral data suggest that bent-tipped, thick-walled sensilla unique to the female are involved in detecting a chemical(s) emitted from the host, Heliothis virescens (Fab.).
