    Description: NASA's Small Explorer Program (SMEX) is a sustained program of scientific satellites limited in mass to 200-300 kg (depending on orbital inclination) for a 500-km circular orbit. The SMEX program was undertaken to obtain the benefits of scientific yield, short development time, and high flight rate, with the goal to launch a mission every year. NASA also uses the program to train engineers and managers in designing and developing spacecraft. The phases of a SMEX mission life cycle are described including the competitive selection of missions through announcement of opportunity and evaluation of proposals, the definition of mission and system requirements, design and development of the spacecraft, testing, launch, and operations. Program content of some SMEX missions is then reviewed. The first SMEX mission was the Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer, which confirmed that anomalous cosmic rays are only partially ionized atoms. The Fast Auroral Snapshot Explorer was intended to measure the electric, magnetic, and time-variable fields and to record particle flow in the auroral acceleration region. A future mission is the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite to examine low-level molecular transitions.

    Description: This video documents the initiative to develop a multinational, permanent space research laboratory. Historical background on the U.S. and Soviet manned space flight program as well as joint efforts such as the Apollo-Soyuz link up is shown. The current initiative will begin with collaborative missions involving NASA's space shuttle and Russia's Mir space station, and culminate in a permanently manned space station involving the U.S., Russia, Japan, Canada, and ESA. Shown are computer simulations of the proposed space station. Commentary is provided by the NASA administrator, former astronauts, cosmonauts, and Russian and American space experts.

    Description: A space station in a crew-tended or permanently crewed configuration will provide major R&D opportunities for innovative, technology and materials development and advanced space systems testing. A space station should be designed with the basic infrastructure elements required to grow into a major systems technology testbed. This space-based technology testbed can and should be used to support the development of technologies required to expand our utilization of near-Earth space, the Moon and the Earth-to-Jupiter region of the Solar System. Space station support of advanced technology and materials development will result in new techniques for high priority scientific research and the knowledge and R&D base needed for the development of major, new commercial product thrusts. To illustrate the technology testbed potential of a space station and to point the way to a bold, innovative approach to advanced space systems' development, a hypothetical deep space transport development and test plan is described. Key deep space transport R&D activities are described would lead to the readiness certification of an advanced, reusable interplanetary transport capable of supporting eight crewmembers or more. With the support of a focused and highly motivated, multi-agency ground R&D program, a deep space transport of this type could be assembled and tested by 2010. Key R&D activities on a space station would include: (1) experimental research investigating the microgravity assisted, restructuring of micro-engineered, materials (to develop and verify the in-space and in-situ 'tuning' of materials for use in debris and radiation shielding and other protective systems), (2) exposure of microengineered materials to the space environment for passive and operational performance tests (to develop in-situ maintenance and repair techniques and to support the development, enhancement, and implementation of protective systems, data and bio-processing systems, and virtual reality and telepresence/kinetic processes), (3) subsystem tests of advanced nuclear power, nuclear propulsion and communication systems (using boom extensions, remote station-keeping platforms and mobile EVA crew and robots), and (4) logistics support (crew and equipment) and command and control of deep space transport assembly, maintenance, and refueling (using a station-keeping platform).

    Description: This video explores the research being done on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), a satellite carrying 57 experiments designed to study the effects of the space environment, which had been in orbit for almost 6 years, and was retrieved and brought back to Earth by the Space Shuttle astronauts. The video shows scenes of the retrieval of LDEF, as well as scenes of ongoing research into the data returned with the satellite from experiments on external coating, contamination of optical materials by thermal control paint, the effects of cosmic rays on different materials, and the effect of the space environment on 12 million tomato seeds that have since been planted.

    Description: This review surveys the origin and conceptual evolution of the space station. It opens with U.S. President Ronald W. Reagan's announcement that one would be developed during the coming decade, continues with an assessment by the Space Science Board of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences of requirements for and potential benefits of a space station, and offers NASA's rationale for its development, construction, and utilization. The review examines early space station concepts, beginning with Edward Everell Hale's Brick Moon of 1869-1870 and going on to proposals by space pioneers Tsiolkovskii of Russia, Oberth of Germany, Noordung and von Pirquet of Austria, and others. Considerable attention is focused on designs put forward during the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's by individuals, by NASA investigators, and by industrial and other contractors. Langley's rotating hexagon, the space base configurations, and other designs are reviewed and strategies are considered for resolving the problem of integrating a multidisciplinary research program with varying and sometimes incompatible engineering and design requirements. The article describes the power tower and dual keel configurations of the 1980's. The interdisciplinary nature of the space station is evident throughout.
