Beschreibung: Results of the verification of satellite wind data are represented by comparing them with radiosonde data for the geostationary satellites METEOSAT, GOES and GMS. The quality of METEOSAT pictures improved, reaching the quality of GOES and GMT wind data.

Beschreibung: All of the phenomena which influence the propagation of radiowaves at frequencies above 10 GHz (attenuation, depolarization, scintillation) can by intensified by parameters directly derived from a solution of individual scatter, naturally in addition to be meteorological elements which characterize the physical medium. The diffusion caused by rainy precipitation was studied using Mie's algorithm for rain composed of spherical drops, and Oguchi's algorithm for rain composed of drops in an ellipsoidal form with axes of rotational symmetry arrange along the vertical line of a generic reference point. Specific phase displacement and attenuation along the principal planes, propagation of radiowaves in generic polarization, and propagation with inclined axes are also considered.

Beschreibung: Implementation by NASA of the South Pacific severe storm detection and warning system project for the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) in Nadi, Fiji, is discussed. A description of the need and use of the system by the FMS, of data reception, of interactive computer techniques, of training, and of the benefits to be derived from implementation of the system is given. The project allows precise tracking of all South Pacific tropical cyclones with frequent high-resolution reception of both the Japanese GMS and the U.S. GOES-West visible and IR cloud images.

Beschreibung: A lightning mapper sensor was conceived for detecting and locating lightning over large areas of the earth's surface, taking into account also a measurement of the radiant energy and a recording of the time of lightning occurrence. The considered device will basically be a calibrated lightning imager. The type of information provided is currently not available on a large scale basis. By using the mapper, scientists will, for the first time, be able to study the electrosphere from scales on the order of the earth's diameter down to the size of individual storms (10 km). Attention is given to details regarding the sensor components, and questions of sensor performance.

Beschreibung: A measurement technique which continuously determines the wind vector on board an airliner during takeoff and landing is introduced. Its implementation is intended to deliver sufficient statistical background concerning low frequency wind changes in the atmospheric boundary layer and extended knowledge about deterministic wind shear modeling. The wind measurement scheme is described and the adaptation of apparatus onboard an A300 airbus is shown. Preliminary measurements made during level flight demonstrate the validity of the method.

Beschreibung: Techniques for remote sensing of particles, from cloud droplet to hailstone size, using optical and microwave frequencies are reviewed. The inherent variability of atmospheric particulates is examined to delineate conditions when the signal can give information to be effectively utilized in a forecasting context. The physical limitations resulting from the phase, size, orientation and concentration variability of the particulates are assessed.

Beschreibung: The life span of a severe storm is on the order of a few hours. Rapid-scan infrared and visible observations from geosynchronous satellites can be useful for studying the life cycle of a severe convective storm. By using artificial colors for pixels representing blackbody temperatures of the cloud top, convective storms can be observed throughout their life cycles. In this paper clouds associated with a tornadic storm, the Ringwood, OK tornado on May 29, 1977, are compared with those without a tornadic storm to illustrate how the infrared and visible observations from a geosynchronous satellite can be used to study the differences in their life cycles. The instability of the air mass and the meteorological background are discussed based on balloon observations.
