    Notes: Polycaprolactone samples were vacuum irradiated and subsequently immersed in aqueous methylamine solution, pH 10, and saline water solutions, Weight loss, solution viscosity, thermal analysis, tensile properties, and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the effects of immersion time and radiation. Irradiation accelerates all studied degradative and damaging processes taking place during exposure to the various environments. Degradation mechanisms in unirradiated and irradiated materials are discussed.

    Notes: In this work we report the effects of single stage zone drawing on the properties of NEW-TPI thermoplastic polyimide homopolymer, and its blends with Amoco's Xydar liquid crystalline polymer. Zone drawing was performed first on homopolymer NEW-TPI films to determine the effect of load weight, heater speed, and drawing temperature on the attainable draw ratio. Degree of crystallinity and chain orientation increase as the draw ratio increases for NEW-TPI. Blends of NEW-TPI/Xydar compositions 90/10 and 70/30 were studied next. In blends, the Xydar component is not molecularly dispersed, and is initially preferentially oriented along the machine direction during the film processing stage. Xydar acts as a nucleation site and lowers the temperature for crystallization of the NEW-TPI from the rubbery amorphous state. Zone drawing was performed either parallel or perpendicular to Xydar's initial preferred orientation direction. Blends with lower Xydar fraction could be zone-drawn to higher ratios. Zone drawing perpendicular to Xydar's initial orientation direction also resulted in increased draw ratio. Dynamic mechanical properties of the zone drawn materials were studied. In homopolymer NEW-TPI, dynamic modulus increased by a factor of two to 4.0 GPa in zone drawn films, largely as a result of the formation of oriented crystallites. In the blends, the modulus parallel to Xydar's initial orientation direction was greater than that in the transverse direction. Depending upon composition and test direction, zone drawing increased the dynamic moduli of the blends from 1.5 up to 2.7 times, in the temperature range from 150°C to 300°C.

    Notes: A model is presented for a zinc/bromine cell that considers the effects of an increase or a decrease in the cathode channel width due to zinc removal on discharge and zinc deposition on charge, respectively. The model also includes the effect of an organic bromine complexing agent (OCA) on the cell performance. Changes in the channel width affect the catholyte velocity, cathode side pressure drop, mass transfer and potential drop in the cell, while the inclusion of the bromine complexing organic phase shows a marked effect on the available bromine in the aqueous phase.It is shown that during discharge, the release of complexed Bromine by the OCA could degrade the cell performance. A simple equation is derived and used to express the relationship between the total bromine in the organic phase and the bromine in the aqueous phase.

    Notes: The primary objective of this study was to develop and validate experimental and mathematical procedures that can be used to determine the fundamental mechanisms of the Purex (plutonium and uranium) extraction process. The mechanisms of this solvent extraction process have been established by classical chemical engineering principles.In the past, modeling of transport phenomena for the solvent extraction of spent nuclear fuel by the Purex process has typically (1) relied solely on diffusion, (2) relied solely on chemical reaction, (3) combined diffusion and chemical reaction in a semiempirical fashion, or (4) combined diffusion and chemical reaction in a nonclassical chemical engineering manner.This study was conducted with the single Purex species, aqueous Zr4+, to simplify the chemistry and modeling mathematics. The validated procedures and model are applicable to most all Purex species.

    Notes: Separation of ethanol-water and methanol-water mixtures has been accomplished experimentally using a horizontal zero-gravity distillation column. A countercurrent flow between liquid and vapor phases was established utilizing the principle of the heat pipe. The concentration profile along the column has been investigated with various product rates. A high degree of separation was achieved in a relatively short column lined with capillary wicks. The flexible column orientation can also be a tremendous advantage as compared to the necessarily vertical operation of the conventional distillation columns.

    Notes: Efforts to remove traces of monomers contained in polymers by stripping with steam have resulted in reports that a small concentration of monomer is inextractable, or “locked-in,” the polymer. Any concomitant depolymerization to monomer and diffusive elution of the formed monomer would, in the steady state, result in a constant concentration of monomer within the confines of the polymer. If only the polymer phase were sampled and depolymerization were ignored, this result could be interpreted as an apparent “zero migration” level of monomer. A model that describes the coupled processes of depolymerization and diffusion is presented; predictions and estimates of an apparent “zero-migration” concentration are offered for various polymer/monomer systems considering a variety of kinetic schemes. The effects of temperature, geometry, and sample size on the transient and apparent steady-state, residual-weight fraction of monomer in the polymer are considered. Also, the weight fraction of monomer, neglecting diffusive elution, is estimated for comparison with the steady-state weight fractions calculated for the case in which diffusive elution significantly lowers the residual steady-state monomer level. The results predicted by the model presented are compared with experimental data reported in the literature. Transient approaches to the steady state are included in the model analysis. The steady-state monomer concentrations predicted for polystyrene and poly(acrylonitrile) at 100°C vary from 0.0001 ppm to 100 ppm as the diameter of the respective polymeric spheres varies between 0.5 μ and 500 μ. The predicted steady-state concentrations for vinyl chloride monomer in poly(vinyl chloride) are, under comparable conditions, seven orders of magnitude lower, reflecting the extraordinarily small tendency of polyvinyl chloride to degrade to monomer.

    Notes: A comparison of experimental data for zero strain Young's modulus of uniform density thermoplastic foam for short times has been made with several theoretical and empirical correlations. An analysis of the variance of the data with the predicted values from the many models indicated that the simplistic density squared relationship adequately described the modulus of the foam for basic engineering calculations.
