Beschreibung: Saturable and stereospecific binding sites for (+)-[3H]amphetamine were demonstrated in membrane preparations from rat brain. The density of these binding sites varies among brain regions and is highest in the hypothalamus and brainstem. Specific (+)-[3H]amphetamine binding in hypothalamus is largely confined to synaptosomal membranes, rapidly reversible, and sensitive to both heat and proteolytic enzymes. Scatchard analysis of the equilibrium binding data revealed two distinct sites with apparent affinity constants of 93 and 300 nanomoles per liter, respectively. The effects of various psychotropic drugs as well as a number of putative neurotransmitters and related agonists and antagonists in displacing specific (+)-[3H]amphetamine binding demonstrate that these binding sites are not associated with any previously described neurotransmitter or drug receptors, but are specific for amphetamine and related phenylethylamine derivatives. Furthermore, the relative affinities of a series of phenylethylamine derivatives for (+)-[3H]amphetamine binding sites in hypothalamic membranes is highly correlated to their potencies as anorexic agents. These results suggest the presence of specific receptor sites in hypothalamus that mediate the anorexic activity of amphetamine and related drugs.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Paul, S M -- Hulihan-Giblin, B -- Skolnick, P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Oct 29;218(4571):487-90.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7123250" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Intracellular recordings from voltage-clamped mouse spinal neurons in tissue culture were used to study the membrane mechanisms underlying inhibitory responses to gamma-aminobutyric acid and the (-) isomer of pentobarbital. Fluctuation analysis suggested that both substances activated ion channels in the membranes. However, the channels activated by pentobarbital remained open five times longer than those activated by gamma-aminobutyric acid.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Mathers, D A -- Barker, J L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Jul 25;209(4455):507-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6248961" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: 49 cm, 6 cm, and 20 cm observations of the compact double ratio source 0108 + 388 are presented. Extended emission about 20 deg to the east of the core is detected which resembles a hot spot/lobe with a bridge of emission extending back to the core. This is the first detection of extended emission associated with such a source, and it is inconsistent with the suggestion that such sources are very young classical double radio sources. The inconsistency can be reconciled if the activity in this object is recurrent and the emission is the relic of a previous epoch of activity. Alternatively, the source may be a normal-aged radio galaxy in which most of the radio-emitting plasma is currently unable to escape the nuclear regions of the galaxy. The steep low-frequency spectrum of the core is probably related to the origin of the compact double and suggests that both components are very sharply confined on both their inner and outer edges.

Beschreibung: The results of a detailed investigation into the nature of the H I-rich quasi-stellar object 0351+026 are presented. An improved H I profile reveals the presence of two distinct components. A high-quality CCD image clearly shows the presence of two galaxies. The brighter galaxy hosts the QSO while the less luminous companion has a prominent, apparently stellar nucleus. Moreover, this image also shows streamers of nebulosity emanating from the two galaxies and has an overall morphology which is highly reminiscent of that seen in other strongly interacting galaxies. Optical spectroscopy of the system shows that the forbidden O III emission lies between the two nuclei and there is strong evidence of stellar absorption lines in both the host and companion galaxies. Overall, the data suggest that this system represents a violent encounter between two low-luminosity H I-rich galaxies. The possibility exists that this collision has triggered the QSO activity in the brighter galaxy.

Beschreibung: Direct imaging and long-slit spectroscopic mapping of the emission-line gas in the Seyfert 2 galaxy 0714 - 2914 (M4-1, MCG - 5-18-2) are reported. The nuclear regions contain an extended (1 kpc size), high-excitation nebulosity that is well aligned with the jet-like nonthermal radio source. The profiles of Forbidden O III 5007A are asymmetric, with extended red wings to the north and west of the nucleus and extended blue wings to the south and east. This switch in the sense of asymmetry is accounted for in terms of a combination of normal rotational motions in the galaxy disk and high-velocity outflow or infall associated with the Seyfert activity.

Beschreibung: We present some analyses of warping modes in inviscid near Keplerian disks taking the three-dimensional structure fully into account. The results of this investigation verify the validity of a vertical averaging approximation for thin disks when the radial wavelength is significantly longer than the disk thickness. They also indicate that long wavelength disturbances may persist for long times. Shorter wavelength disturbances in non-self gravitating disks are found to propagate with little dispersion at a speed related to the sound speed. When self-gravity becomes important, fast and slow waves are found which also propagate with little dispersion. When a small viscosity is included, the evolution of the disturbances becomes more diffusive in character.

    Beschreibung: Specific binding of 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) was found in nuclear and cytosol fractions of the bovine pituitary. For nuclear binding. the dissociation constant was 0.1 namomole per liter, and maximum binding was 104 femtomoles per milligram of protein. In competition studies, 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) was 300 times weaker than 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3). The existence of high-affinity sites supports a physiologic role for 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) in the pituitary.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gelbard, H A -- Stern, P H -- U'Prichard, D C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Sep 12;209(4462):1247-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6250221" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Broadband 1-mm continuum observations of 37 active extragalactic objects are discussed in the context of several models of the radio and IR continuum emission of compact extragalactic objects. The observed correlation of the 1-mm flux density of 'blazars', or BL Lac objects and optically violent, variable quasars, with both radio and IR emission, is a natural consequence of the attribution of the radio-to-optical blazar continuum to synchrotron radiation from a relativistic jet viewed nearly along its axis. It is shown that a Comptonization model in which the IR continuum of quasars is produced by the upscattering of radio photons into the IR by a thermal plasma will be in accord with the 1-mm and IR data, if these photons have frequencies in the 10 to the 12th to 10 to the 13th Hz range.

Notizen: The dominant primary reactions of propionitrile under electron-impact effect loss of HCN and loss of H·. Deuterium labeling shows that the hydrogen atom lost as HCN comes chiefly from C-2, but that lost as a free atom comes chiefly from C-3. Both reactions are probably preceded by a 1,2 hydrogen migration to yield an allylic-like molecular ion, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \left[{{\rm CH}_{\rm 3}{\rm C}^+ {\rm HCH = N}^{\rm .} \leftrightarrow {\rm CH}_{\rm 3} \mathop {\rm C}\limits^{\rm .} {\rm HCH = N}} \right]^+ $\end{document}.
