Beschreibung: New 40Ar/39Ar and 14C ages have been found for the Albano multiple maar pyroclastic units and underlying 25 paleosols to document the most recent explosive activity in the Colli Albani Volcanic District (CAVD) near 26 Rome, Italy, consisting of seven eruptions (Albano 1 27 ^ = ^ oldest). Both dating methodologies have been applied on several proximal units and on four mid-distal fall/surge deposits, the latter correlated, according to two 28 current different views, to either the Albano or the Campi di Annibale hydromagmatic center. The 40Ar/39Ar 29 ages on leucite phenocrysts from the mid-distal units yielded ages of ca. 72 ka, 73 ka, 41 ka and 36 ka BP, 30 which are indistinguishable from the previously determined 40Ar/39Ar ages of the proximal Albano units 1, 2, 31 5 and 7, thus confirming their stratigraphic correspondence. 32 Twenty-one 14C ages of the paleosols beneath Albano units 3, 5, 6 and 7 were found for samples collected 33 from 13 proximal and distal sections, some of which were the same sections sampled for 40Ar/39Ar 34 measurements. The 14C ages were found to be stratigraphically inconsistent and highly scattered, and were 35 systematically younger than the 40Ar/39Ar ages, ranging 36 ^ from 35 ka ^ to 3 ka. Considering the significant consistence of the 40Ar/39Ar chronological framework, we interpret the scattered and contradictory 14C ages 37 to be the result of a variable contamination of the paleosols by younger organic carbon deriving from the 38 superficial soil horizons. 39 These results suggest that multiple isotopic systems anchored to a robust stratigraphic framework may need 40 to be employed to determine accurately the geochronology of the CAVD as well as other volcanic districts. 41

Beschreibung: A Digital Terrain Model derived from high resolution Lidar data allow us to determine the morphometric and physical parameters of a lava flow erupted from the Somma-Vesuvius volcano in 1944. The downstream variation of the morphometric parameters, which include slope, aspect, range, thickness, width, and cross sectional area, is analyzed, and the changes in viscosity, velocity and flow rate are estimated. The aim is to recognize different flow surfaces, to reconstruct the flow kinematics, and to obtain information on the mechanism of emplacement. Results indicate that the 1944 lava can be divided in three sectors: a near vent sector (NVS) characterized by a toe-like surface, an intermediate sector (IS) with an ‘a‘ā-type, brittle surface, and a distal sector (DS) with a sheet-like, ductile surface. Lateral leveé and channels are lacking in NVS, whereas they are well developed in IS. In DS, leveés grow up moving away from the vent. Fold-like surfaces occur in NVS and DS and reveal local shortening processes due to a decrease in the slope of the substratum and to overflows from the main channel. IS and DS emplaced between 18 and 21 March 1944, whereas NVS emplaced on 19 March and partly overlaps IS. The morphometric and physical parameters indicate that IS moved in a ‘tube’-like regime, whereas DS emplaced in a ‘mobile crust’ regime. The IS to DS transition is marked by an increase in velocity and flow rate, and by a decrease in thickness, width, cross sectional area, and viscosity. This transition is due to an abrupt increase in the slope of the substratum. The estimated velocity values are in good agreement with the measurements carried out during the 1944 eruption. The analysis used here may be extended to other lava flows. Some gravity flows (debris/mud flows, floods, avalanches) have rheological properties and topography close to those of lavas, and the same effects can involve these flows. The approach used here may be useful for an evaluation of the hazard from gravity currents.

Beschreibung: This paper documents a phreatomagmatic ¯ank eruption that occurred 18 700 100 a BP, on the lower north-eastern slope of Etna during the Ellittico volcano activity, which produced fall and surge deposits. This type of eruption is connected to a sedimentary basement ridge at Etna. The interaction between the rising magma and the shallow groundwater hosted in the volcanic pile overlying the impermeable sediments resulted in phreatomagmatic instead of strombolian activity. Three eruptive phases are distinguished based on ®eld and analytical data: (i) an explosive phreatomagmatic opening, (ii) a main phase producing coarse lithic-rich fallout and a strombolian deposit, and (iii) the ®nal pulsating surge-forming phase. The discovery of this phreatomagmatic ¯ank eruption, which occurred at lower altitude, raises important issues for previous hazard assessments at Etna.

Beschreibung: We describe the slope processes acting on Camaldoli Hill, the main volcanic feature of the Neapolitan area whose geological evolution and setting have been reconstructed. The backbone of the hill includes the remnants of two partially superposed tuff cones, lying between the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) and the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT). This sequence is mantled by pyroclastic, anthropogenic and epiclastic deposits, with abrupt thickness and facies variations. The structural setting of the hill mainly results from several phases of reactivation of the CI caldera faults which were active until about 9.5 ka. Deformation younger than 15 ka is evidenced by landslide deposits, caused by slope instability from volcano-tectonism, and by a high-angle erosional unconformity, formed in response to a base-level lowering. A stratigraphic analysis of the reworked deposits at the foot of the slopes allowed us to define both depositional mechanisms and sedimentation rates. The results of combined volcanological, geomorphological and engineering-geological studies permitted us to constrain and quantify past geological processes and hypothesis about the future evolution of the hill. Present-day slope processes on Camaldoli Hill are largely controlled by the presence of weathered and reworked deposits, whose nature and thickness have been analysed and mapped in detail. Four main kinds of slope processes have been recognized: falls and toppling failures from NYT; small-scale slides in the weathered and pedogenized loose cover; mixed events, represented by slides evolving to hyperconcentrated flows, mud flows and debris flows; and areal and linear erosion. Consequently, a high number of mass movements not previously documented have been mapped. At the same time, an insight into the sedimentation rate due to the overall slope processes, covering a time-span of about 5 ka, was given. Some final considerations regarding landslide hazard are presented in the context of the most suitable remedial works.

Beschreibung: Natural radioactivity measurements represent an interesting tool to study geodynamical events or soil geophysical characteristics. In this direction we carried out, in the last years, several radionuclide monitoring both in the volcanic and tectonic areas of the oriental Sicily. In particular we report in-soil Radon investigations, in a tectonic area, including both laboratory and in-site measurements, applying three different methodologies, based on both active and passive detection systems. The active detection devices consisted of solid-state silicon detectors equipped in portable systems for short-time measurements and for long-time monitoring. The passive technique consisted of solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), CR-39 type, and allowed integrated measurements. The performances of the three methodologies were compared according to different kinds of monitoring. In general the results obtained with the three methodologies seem in agreement with each other and reflect the tectonic settings of the investigated area.
