    Description: The convenience of applying quantitative methods in companies of the fishing sector is demonstrated in order to reach competitivity, based not only in the quality of processes and products but also on the incidence of those operations. The study is examined from the point of view of a private fishing company. The characteristics of the Argentine (SW Atlantic) fishing industry are also described.Original Abstract: Se pone de manifiesto la conveniencia de la aplicacion de los metodos cuantitativos en las empresas del sector pesquero para lograr competitividad basada no solo en la calidad de los procesos y productos sino tambien en la incidencia que tienen las operaciones en la misma. El enfoque que se presenta, es desde el punto de vista de una empresa pesquera privada. Tambien se describen las caracteristicas de la industria pesquera Argentina (Atlantico SO).

    Notes: Abstract The problem of finding an Evolutionary Stable Strategy (ESS) for an animal species is defined. It is shown how such strategies are a subset of the equilibrium solutions for a particular non-zero sum game. These equilibrium solutions are then shown to arise from the vertices of a particular convex polyhedron. A method of finding these equilibrium solutions through the vertices and then the ESS solutions is given. This is illustrated by a number of numerical examples taken from the literature. Finally an alternative approach based on solving a Linear Complementarity Problem is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we continue a study of secret sharing schemes for-access structures based on graphs. Given a graph G, we require that a subset of participants can compute a secret key if they contain an edge of G; otherwise, they can obtain no information regarding the key. We study the information rate of such schemes, which measures how much information in being distributed as shares compared with the size of the secret key, and the average information rate, which is the ratio between the secret size and the arithmetic mean of the size of the shares. We give both upper and lower bounds on the optimal information rate and average information rate that can be obtained. Upper bounds arise by applying entropy arguments due to Capocelli et al. [15]. Lower bounds come from constructions that are based on graph decompositions. Application of these constructions requires solving a particular linear programming problem. We prove some general results concerning the information rate and average information rate for paths, cycles, and trees. Also, we study the 30 (connected) graphs on at most five vertices, obtaining exact values for the optimal information rate in 26 of the 30 cases, and for the optimal average information rate in 28 of the 30 cases.

    Notes: Abstract The linear programming model of optimal diet for herbivores has been criticized for being biologically unrealistic, for being too successful given statistical realities, and for being circular. I try to clarify the issue of circularity. Circularity arises if constraint lines are estimated from average values for governing parameters, when the assumed constraints are not effective. This may occur (1) under benign season conditions when consumers do not maximize their food intake, because of costs associated with food processing and storage, or (2) when an unidentified constraint limits intake. To evaluate hypotheses about the factors controlling diet composition, it must be shown that (1) consumers respond appropriately to variation in the parameters controlling constraint settings, and (2) the assumed constraints are close to their maximum (or minimum) settings.

    Notes: Abstract Various aspects of optimal foraging and seasonal diet composition of bulls (bachelor and dominant), cows, subadults, and yearlings of muskoxen Ovibos moschatus were investigated in West Greenland during the following seasons: calving, post-calving, summer, rut and mid-winter. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) muskoxen maximize daily energy intake during spring and summer, (2) dominant bulls monopolizing cows during the rutting season shift from an energy maximizing to a time minimizing foraging strategy in order to maximize the time available for reproductive activities, and (3) muskoxen employ a time minimizing foraging strategy during winter to conserve energy. As forage quality changed throughout the short Arctic growing season, muskoxen responded by changing the proportions of daily time spent feeding on graminoids (Cyperaceae, Poaceae) and dicots (Salix, Betula), respectively. This seasonal variation in the relative proportion of daily feeding time spent ingesting graminoids followed approximately the energy maximization prediction over the periods calving to rut. Neither time minimizing nor random foraging could explain the observed diets in this period, thus confirming hypothesis 1. Dominant bulls did not shift to the time minimizing strategy as predicted by hypothesis 2. However, during the pre-rutting and rutting seasons bulls deviated from the other sex/age classes by failing to obtain the daily maximum energy predicted by the model, as a result of a higher proportion of time allocated to agonistic and sexual behaviour. During winter, none of the sex/age classes employed a time minimizing strategy, so rejecting hypothesis 3. Instead, muskoxen were found to maximize Na intake, indicating that Na is of major importance for winter survival. The results emerging from a linear programming model with constraint settings varying over seasons confirm that the constraint parameters applied are indeed important limiting factors for muskoxen in natural populations.

    Notes: Abstract Food selection was studied in free living green iguanas (Iguana iguana) throughout the year in a semiarid environment, Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles). Food intake was determined by direct observations and converted into biomass intake. Comparison between intake and biomass availability of the various food items revealed that the lizards were selective, and that changes in seasonal food availability led to periodic switching of food plants. The extent to which nutrient constraints determine iguana feeding ecology was investigated. Potential constraints were the requirements for water, digestible crude protein, and metabolizable energy. By using a linear programming model that incorporates characteristics of the food (chemical composition, energy content, item size) and requirements and constraints of the green iguanas (nutrient and energy requirements digestive tract capacity, feeding rate) it was possible to identify which factors determine food choice over the year. During the dry period, when the iguanas had no access to drinking water they consumed flowers to increase water intake, though the amount of flowers consumed was too low to cover maintenance requirements for either energy or protein. After the young leaf flush, following the early rains in May, the biomass increased, free surface water was available during showers, and the linear programming solutions indicate that food selection conformed to the protein maximization criterion. Reproduction in green iguanas shows an annual cycle, in which oviposition takes place at the end of the dry season, when intake is below maintenance levels. Females show a 8–10 month gap between acquisition of most of the protein required for egg synthesis and the act of laying. Thus, as in avian and mammalian herbivores, food availability during a period prior to the energy and protein demanding reproductive season of iguanas determines reproductive success.

    Notes: Abstract I assessed the effects of the sampling error of input variables on the energy-maximizing diets of 14 grassland herbivores that Belovsky (1986) predicted using a linear programming model of optimal foraging. Monte Carlo simulations showed that the error reported in the estimates of the variables generated wide confidence intervals on predicted diets of the species. Given this imprecision in the predictions, the predicted diets that Belovsky reported were unexpectedly similar to the observed diets. The high correlation between predicted and observed diets reported by Belovsky was only attained in 0.01% of the simulation runs. Simulations assuming a variety of relationships between the sampling error in the different variables did not alter this conclusion. Incorporating the sampling error in even a single variable causes wide variability in the predicted diets. This analysis suggests that the high levels of accuracy reported for the linear programming approach will be difficult to repeat.
