Notes: In this paper, interior flux calculations for two-dimensional transient scalar wave propagation are developed and presented for the first time in the BEM literature. There are some severe analytical difficulties in the derivation of these kernels which have been circumvented through physical interpretation. Moreover, an apparent singularity at the wave-front of these kernels has been reduced to an integrable one through some convenient condensation. These kernels have been implemented in the time-domain BEM algorithm with linear temporal variation and quadratic spatial variation for the field variables. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the implementation.

Notes: In this paper we study the validation of the new formulation (potential-stream vector) of the steady Euler equations in 2-D/3-D transonic lifting regime flow. This approach, which is based on the Helmholtz decomposition of a velocity vector field, is designed to extend the potential approximation of Euler equations for severe situations such as high transonic or rotational subsonic flows. Different results computed by a fixed point algorithm on the stream vector correction are shown and discussed by comparing them with those obtained by the full potential approach.

Description: On-farm recharge (OFR) is a practice that uses surface water to alleviate demand on and replenish groundwater supplies. It can take on two forms: in lieu recharge and direct recharge. In lieu recharge utilizes surface water supplies instead of groundwater to irrigate crops. Direct recharge applies water beyond the needs of the crop and replenishes the groundwater supply. ...The present study examined OFR with grapes, walnuts, and pistachios at six sites in the San Joaquin Valley, plus one additional site from a previous study, also in the San Joaquin Valley. Each site was comprised of a recharge plot that received direct recharge paired with a control plot with the same crop and soil characteristics, but meant to receive in lieu recharge (via the flood system) or drip application with groundwater. At the end of the 2017 recharge demonstration, however, three control plots had also received direct recharge from water applications that exceeded the crop’s water demand. At another site, both control and test plots had only received in lieu recharge due to limited surface water amounts or the host growers’ more conservative volume of water application. ...The present study only covers one season of recharge. Long-term effects of recharge are not described by the present study and will require further monitoring. Further study is needed of the dynamics of soil oxygen during and after recharge events. Similarly, the fate of the water after it infiltrates past the root zone is not always known and the rate at which recharged water will reach an aquifer is seldom known for deep aquifers. A method to predict the fate of water quickly and broadly would be quite helpful in developing an on-farm recharge strategy. The present study does not look at the effects of recharge on soil biological processes, such as microbial respiration and plant oxygen demand. Further study of the recharge tolerance of specific species and rootstocks, as well as the impact on plant disease, is crucial.

Notes: Because the 20-node solid element of the serendipity family does not fulfil the physical contact requirements properly (the equivalent nodal forces include negative values) a 21-node three-dimensional transient element for the non-linear contact/friction problem is investigated. Construction of the shape functions is described. The proposed transition element is established by adding one node to the top or bottom face of the basic 20-node solid serendipity element for an effective connection between the contact region (21-node elements) and the rest of the structure (20-node elements) with minimum degrees of freedom possible. Comparisons with results calculated for the 3D-contact problem using the combinations of the 8-node element connected to 20-node finite elements prove the high accuracy and overall superiority of the present method. The numerical examples are shown to illustrate the validity and efficiency of the developed technique. The approach may be employed easily in existing computer codes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The paper is devoted to the analysis of two- or three-dimensional contact problems with Coulomb friction and large deformation. The classical approach is based on two minimum principles or two variational inequalities: the first for unilateral contact and the second for friction. A coupled approach using only one principle or one inequality is presented. This new approach allows us to extend the notion of normality law to dissipative behaviours with a non-associated flow rule, such as surface friction. Non-differentiable contact potentials are regularized by means of the augmented Lagrangian method. Using the C++ language, an object-oriented finite element database is created, which allows us to implement the contact and friction in an existing code in a very simple and neat way. Numerical examples are carried out in many difficult cases such as shock absorber and three-dimensional contact. The numerical results prove that this approach is robust and efficient concerning numerical stability.

Notes: New fundamental solutions which automatically satisfy boundary conditions at the interfaces of an elastic plate perfectly bonded to two elastic halfspaces are implemented in a 3-D boundary element method (BEM) for crack problems. The BEM features a new integration scheme for highly singular kernels. The capability is achieved through a part analytic and part numerical integration procedure, such that the analytic part of the integration is similar for all slip/opening variations, ‘Part-through’ elliptic cracks in an elastic plate with traction-free surfaces are analysed and the stress intensity factor (SIF) values along the crack front are found to compare favourably with widely accepted numerically obtained SIF results by Raju and Newman.1

Notes: The eigenmodes in electromagnetic cavities, loaded with arbitrarily shaped dielectric materials, are computed by the edge element method. The computation shows that the well known ‘spurious modes’ no longer appear. Formulae are given and verified so that the number of zero eigenvalues, which come from ∇ × H = 0, may be accurately predicted. Formulae for the order and density of the global matrices are given for a rectangular cavity regularly divided into bricks and tetrahedra, allowing an associated comparison between the contrasting edge and nodal element formulations. Comparison of the computed results with available theoretical and previously published data show the edge element approach to be a robust, accurate and effective method.
