    Beschreibung: PAUL GILSON (1865-1942), born and raised in Brussels, grew into a valued artist during the fin de siècle. He was and is known as an erudite composer, orchestrator, theoretician, critic, musicographer and educator. A prestigious Prix de Rome (1889) and his symphonic work La Mer (1892) made him known far beyond the national borders. Because of his remarkable commitment to wind music, and that of amateur orchestras in particular, we still remember Gilson today as the Father of Belgian wind music. Gilson's extremely versatile artistry resonated with numerous international trends. He closely followed current musical life at home and abroad and reported extensively in newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts. At the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp and as a private teacher, he managed to stimulate and sustainably influence a new generation of composers and musicians. That pedagogical passion also challenged Gilson to bundle his sharp insights into theoretical tracts. All of these facets of Gilson's life and work are the focus of this book, with a particular focus on his national and international importance. From his life to his correspondence with Russians, from his elaborate theories to his music for wind orchestras, opera music and compositions for horn and saxophone: the authors of this volume provide an in-depth and extensive insight into the character of Paul Gilson.

    Beschreibung: Le suprême hommage studies the handling of dying, burial and commemoration of royal and political elites in Belgium in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. This innovative historical research takes place at the interface of cultural history and political history. The reader not only gains insight into the impact of social class, status and religion on funerary culture, but also into the influence of media culture on the perception of death, mourning and memory. Within a selection of 170 cases, the author discusses in words and images the mediatised deaths and no less than imposing funerals of Belgium's first kings and queens and their families. The evolving practices surrounding the deaths of (former) heads of government, (former) presidents of parliament and mayors of major cities are also discussed in detail. Finally, the genesis of Belgium's most famous urban (park) cemeteries, and the funerary heritage in these cities of death, is also brought to life through the analysis of eye-catching funeral monuments. This book is a richly illustrated survey work on the social, political and cultural dimensions of the death of high-ranking figures in 19th- and 20th-century Belgian society.

    Beschreibung: The legal systems that shape capitalist societies worldwide contribute to a number of fundamental social problems. An ever-growing public and private debt, environmental pollution, an increasing polarization between rich and poor, and a globally unjust fiscal and financial system are examples of this. from. The capitalist system itself does not address these problems. However, the main legal building blocks of the capitalist socio-economic system are remarkably simple, namely money and the way in which it is created, the (capital) company form and the (neo)liberal state organization that wants to make the markets as free as possible. In How Economics Became the Problem (and What to Do About It), the author, as a specialist in the field, provides a critical analysis of capitalist economics and provides insights into how, for the benefit of our societies, we be able to use the prevailing legal instruments completely differently. The book is the Dutch version of the original English version entitled How Economics Became the Problem. An urgent call to legal action. The Russian translation of the book will be published in 2021. A Chinese version of the book is currently in press.
    Beschreibung: De rechtssystemen die de kapitalistische samenlevingen wereldwijd vorm geven, dragen bij tot een aantal fundamentele maatschappelijke problemen. Een almaar groeiende openbare en particuliere schuld, de milieuvervuiling, een toenemende polarisatie tussen rijk en arm, en een wereldwijd onrechtvaardig fiscaal en financieel systeem zijn daar voorbeelden van. Het kapitalistische systeem zelf pakt deze problemen niet aan. Nochtans zijn de belangrijkste juridische bouwstenen van het kapitalistische sociaaleconomische systeem opmerkelijk eenvoudig, namelijk geld en de manier waarop het wordt gecreëerd, de (kapitaal)vennootschapsvorm en de (neo)liberale staatsorganisatie die de markten zo vrij mogelijk wil maken. In Hoe economie het probleem werd (en wat eraan te doen valt) geeft de auteur als specialist ter zake een kritische analyse van de kapitalistische economie en geeft hij inzichten in hoe we, ten bate van onze samenlevingen, de heersende juridische instrumenten volledig anders kunnen inzetten. Het boek vormt de Nederlandse versie van de oorspronkelijke Engelse versie met als titel How Economics Became the Problem. An urgent call to legal action. In 2021 verscheen de Russische vertaling van het boek. Een Chinese versie van het boek is momenteel ter perse.

    Beschreibung: During the Second World War, crime rates skyrocketed in the occupied Netherlands, particularly concerning theft and other offences against property. These crimes were committed by both those who had been convicted in the prewar period and previously ‘well-behaved’ citizens. Some of them felt forced to steal by the circumstances, others took advantage of the situation for their own benefit. How did suspects justify their acts? Did they consider theft during the occupation to be a crime, or not? And how did Dutch judges pass judgement concerning property crimes? Did they have compassion for stealing compatriots, or did they consider theft in times of scarcity and increasing poverty to be a great danger, which should be severely punished? In this book, historian Jan Julia Zurné uses case files and verdicts by Dutch courts to provide insight into the lives, experiences and motivations of wartime thieves.

    Beschreibung: This book tells the story of Utrecht University’s colonial past. Ever since the university was founded in 1636, its scholars and students have been involved in various activities in the Dutch colonies of the West and East Indies. There was a great interest in the world of the 'other' far away: the natural world as well as their cultures, languages and religious systems. The basic assumption always was: we are 'developed', they are 'not yet developed'. Superiority served as guiding principle. By the end of the nineteenth century, Utrecht’s research activities in the colonies were dominated by biology, medicine, geology, and physical anthropology/anatomy. It was understood to be 'pure research' in the colonies. But it was pure colonial research. The University benefited enormously from those research activities. The latest phase of 'university development cooperation' (since the 1980s), was to some extent a continuation of that approach.
