Description: “Long live the Reds, down with the Whites! Long live Ledru-Rollin! Bonaparte to the guillotine! Down with the Chouans!”. These cries made in October 1850 by grape pickers from the Dole area are one of the many traces that Pierre Merlin collected in archives that have been little-studied until now to write the living history of the democratic learning in Jura between 1848 and the end of the 19th century. From the intense political struggles around 1848 to the establishment of the Republic and beyond, the book describes the formation of a democratic opinion that is illuminated by trajectories of emblematic republicans and socialists such as Louis-Étienne Jousserandot and Jean-Paul Mazaroz.

Description: The nineteenth century Bourgeoisie in the rural French Jura were not what you might expect. In sometimes delicate, sometimes down-to-earth language, they candidly discuss the running of the vineyards, the sex lives of the housemaids, their sensitivity to smells, their concerns about money or their relations with the neighbours in the farm or chateau next door. Men and women both escape from received gender roles, often far from traditional standards. Refusing to face the upheavals of the nineteenth century, they remain attached to an immutable past thus putting themselves in danger. Drawing from private correspondence, the author reveals its microhistory.

Description: The importance of the italian idea of race has been underestimated for a long time. Therefore, in Italy as well as in France or in Germany, a certain number of literary works or scientific discourses mobilise the concept of race in a theoretical and political perspective. From the first decades of the 19th century to the fascist period, three points – romantic philology, positivist anthropology and fascist ideology – prepare the ground of the Italian idea of race. The study of these points reveal a specific use engaging not only the relation the Peninsula maintains with the other but also the relation it maintains with itself.
