    Catene di Markov e applicazioni algoritmiche (2024)

    Description: Markov chains represent a classical topic of probability theory that has a large number of applications in different areas, including mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, natural science, economics and several others. Typical examples of Markovian models concern for instance the analysis and interpretation of DNA sequences, voice recognition and the design of procedures for analysis and browsing of the web. In computer science and in particular in the algorithmic area Markov chains have been used to introduce the so-called Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow us to design probabilistic approximation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems. This work presents Markov chains and their algorithmic applications in a mathematical style, with a didactic spirit. It mainly has educational purposes, and it is specifically designed for teaching these topics in Italian university courses at a master level.

    Description: Le catene di Markov rappresentano un argomento di studio classico, di carattere matematico e probabilistico, che ha trovato un grande numero di applicazioni in varie discipline, dall’informatica alla matematica, dalla fisica alla biologia e alle scienze naturali, dalla sociologia all'economia e in molti altri contesti. Esempi tipici di modelli markoviani riguardano l'analisi e l’interpretazione di sequenze di DNA, il riconoscimento di segnali vocali, il disegno di procedure di esplorazione e analisi della rete web. In un ambito informatico e soprattutto algoritmico le catene di Markov hanno dato origine ai cosiddetti metodi Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), che consentono di definire algoritmi probabilistici di approssimazione per problemi difficili dal punto di vista computazionale. Questo testo presenta le catene di Markov e alcune loro applicazioni algoritmiche in uno stile matematico con un taglio principalmente didattico, rivolto in particolare agli studenti dei corsi di laurea magistrale a carattere scientifico delle università italiane.

From England, where the passion for horticulture has a well-documented history, women protagonists in the history of the garden have travelled to America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia, crossing the borders of our old world but always carrying with them their roots, replanted in distant lands. Francesca Orestano, Anna Rudelli and Anna Zappatini have outlined these adventurous stories, and the lessons that can be learnt from them, even by growing a simple geranium on the window sill.

Dall’Inghilterra, dove la passione orticola ha una sua storia ben documentata, le donne protagoniste nella storia del giardino si sono spinte verso l’America, l’Australia, la Nuova Zelanda, l'Asia, superando i confini del nostro vecchio mondo ma portando sempre con sé le loro radici, ripiantate in terre lontane. Francesca Orestano, Anna Rudelli e Anna Zappatini hanno tracciato queste storie avventurose, e le lezioni che se ne possono trarre, anche coltivando un semplice geranio sul davanzale della finestra.

    Description: The book is a contribution, on one side, to the ongoing reflexion and sharing of best practices on student centred teaching and cooperative learning in higher education and, on the other and widely speaking, on role management or effective leadership models in the pedagogical and organisational University context. It addresses teachers from all the disciplines and students. Based on, and moving from, the author’s personal experience as an international law scholar, this work suggests different possible perspectives in disclosing disciplinary literacy, eg the legal one, through the lens of relational competencies. The fil rouge across the book is role awareness, i.e. the ability to understand the space of the role (as well as sovereignty in international relations) as an area to fill and, if pertaining to others, as a zone to respect. Nevertheless, within this perspective and setting as starting point the fact that the ultimate task of every teacher, and university professor, is blending all the forms of knowledge in the service of effective instruction, thus aiming at accompanying classes not only in assimilating (international law) knowledge, but also competencies, the author explores if an experience-based relational training of teachers can have a transformative and improving effect on the teaching methodology, within an approach that seeks to change the focus from teaching to learning. In the systemic frame and linked to the field of international law and relations, the space of the role overlaps with the notion of sovereignty, as well as with the nature of the International Community as an interdependent, original, necessary and (formally) equal society. Interpersonal and international relations thus seem to be traced back to a common system.

    Description: Il volume è un contributo alla discussione sulla didattica innovativa e sulla gestione dei ruoli nell’Università. Si rivolge ai docenti e alle docenti, ma anche alla componente studentesca. Basato sulla personale esperienza dell’autrice, dischiude altri mondi possibili. Centrale è il tema della consapevolezza del ruolo, ovvero la capacità di riconoscere lo spazio del ruolo come un luogo che è necessario riempire e, se di altri, rispettare. In una tale prospettiva, orientata ad accompagnare l’aula, non solo nell’apprendimento della disciplina ma anche nella trasmissione delle competenze, l’autrice si interroga sul come una formazione di carattere esperienziale di impostazione sistemico-relazionale possa influire in senso trasformativo e migliorativo della metodologia didattica, con un approccio che mira a spostare il focus dall’insegnare all’apprendere. Nel diritto internazionale, per esempio, il tema dello spazio del ruolo si rispecchia in quello dell’estensione della sovranità nelle relazioni fra Stati e dei caratteri di interdipendenza, necessaria appartenenza, originarietà e parità della e nella Comunità internazionale. Le relazioni interindividuali e le relazioni internazionali sembrano così ricondotte ad un unico sistema.

    Description: AMALPI Trek is a cross-border geotouristic trail that, from the Maloja Pass to the Gotthard region, leads along ancient and new routes, with their natural and anthropic peculiarities (waterfalls, villages), historical-archaeological (such as the excavations in Piuro) and gastronomic (such as foods prepared in soapstone pots, “lavecc”), to discover the processes that drastically change the Alpine territory: the great landslides of the past, present and future. The guidebook allows anyone to enjoy in another way the beauty of the crossed valleys, perhaps walking only short distances, or reaching them by other transportation means (preferably public or zero emissions), relying on interpretations provided by scholars, to understand the landscape evolution and the history of landslides. The hope is to help in promoting a new curiosity towards mountains and what animates them, landslides, increasing the risk awareness in the Alpine environment.

    Description: AMALPI Trek è un itinerario geoturistico transfrontaliero che, dal Passo del Maloja alla regione del San Gottardo, conduce lungo antichi e nuovi percorsi, con le loro peculiarità naturali e antropiche (cascate, borghi), storico-archeologiche (come gli scavi a Piuro) e gastronomiche (come i piatti preparati nelle pentole in pietra ollare, i lavecc), alla scoperta dei processi che drasticamente modificano il territorio alpino: le grandi frane, passate, presenti e future. La guida permette a chiunque di gustare in altro modo la bellezza delle valli attraversate, magari percorrendone a piedi solo brevi tratti, o raggiungendole con altri mezzi (meglio se pubblici o a zero emissioni), potendo contare su chiavi di lettura fornite da studiosi, per comprendere l’evoluzione del paesaggio e la storia dei fenomeni franosi. L’auspicio è quello di contribuire a promuovere una nuova curiosità verso le montagne e ciò che le anima, le frane, aumentando la consapevolezza del rischio in ambiente alpino.

Building upon the text of "gymnasticus" written by the rhetorician Lucius Flavius Philostratus, the author develops an innovative methodological hypothesis, involving the disciplines of philosophy, history, and cognitive and motor sciences. Through a philosophical analysis of contemporary authors such as Hadot, Foucault, and Deleuze, the author incorporates their insights and applies them to the current context of sports science. A team of experts in the field have produced an information platform based on an orderly and coordinated set of measured parameters. Each growth habit within a species is defined and discussed, terms are defined (glossary), objective tree growth data are presented, and reference cultivars are provided. Illustrations represent a useful visual guide to each growth type. This monograph thus seeks not only to describe the main tree habits found in five important stone-fruit species but also to identify the morphological keys unlocking their characterization and, in the process, provide some suggestions for their practical exploitation.

    Description: La monografia illustra il particolare aspetto che concerne il portamento, o habitus, delle drupacee ed è il risultato del lavoro di un gruppo di ricercatori esperti del settore, che hanno raccolto ed elaborato dati scientifici sulle principali specie di drupacee, per caratterizzare i principali tipi di albero. Ogni portamento, per ciascuna specie, è stato definito sulla base di dati oggettivi ottenuti su gruppi omogenei di cultivar ed in particolare su idonee cultivar di riferimento. Oltre alle illustrazioni grafiche dei singoli portamenti e ad un approccio comparato tra le diverse specie, sono fornite anche le definizioni dei termini specifici (glossario). Il testo si propone quindi, non solo di descrivere i principali portamenti presenti in alcune specie di fruttiferi, ma anche di contribuire all’individuazione e alla definizione delle chiavi morfologiche ai fini della loro caratterizzazione, oltre a fornire suggerimenti utili per il loro pratico sfruttamento.

They are “notes”, sometimes very detailed, which aim to be first useful for making the fundamental elements of thermodynamics one’s own. This book is based on the path I have designed up for teaching Thermodynamics for the Degree Course in Physics at the University of Milan. A path undertaken first and foremost by me, as the first and last student, to answer the questions that arise when entering into the study of thermodynamics. Sometimes these are even curious questions, but never trivial ones, which allow those who look carefully to see the world around us with new eyes and which, I hope, will ultimately appears as a new and wonderful world!

Sono “appunti”, a volte molto approfonditi, che si propongono di essere prima di tutto utili per fare propri gli elementi fondamentali della termodinamica. Questo libro si basa sul percorso che ho pensato per l’insegnamento di Termodinamica per il Corso di Laurea in Fisica dell’Università degli Studi di Milano. Un percorso intrapreso innanzitutto da me, come primo e ultimo studente, per rispondere alle domande che nascono addentrandosi nello studio della termodinamica. A volte si tratta di domande anche curiose, ma mai banali, che permettono a chi guarda attentamente di vedere con occhi nuovi il mondo che ci circonda e che, spero, possa infine apparire un mondo nuovo e meraviglioso!
