Beschreibung: Seeps are the expression of the migration of hydrocarbons from subsurface accumulations to the surface in sedimentary basins. They may represent an important indication of the presence of petroleum (gas and oil) reservoirs and faults, and are a natural source of greenhouse gas (methane) and atmospheric pollutants (ethane, propane) to the atmosphere. Romania is one of the countries with the largest number of seeps in the world, due to the high petroleum potential and active tectonics. Based on a review of the available literature, and on the field surveys performed by the authors during the last 17 years, we report the first comprehensive GIS-based inventory of 470 seeps in Romania (HYSED-RO), including gas seeps (10.4% of the total), oil seeps (11.7%), mud volcanoes (50.4%), gas-rich springs (12.6%), asphalt (solid) seeps (4.3%), unclassified manifestations (4.0%), and uncertain seeps (6.6%). Seeps are typically located in correspondence with major faults and vertical and fractured stratigraphic contacts associated to petroleum reservoirs (anticlines) in low heat flow areas, and their gas-geochemistry reflects that of the subsurface reservoirs. The largest and most active seeps occur in the Carpathian Foredeep, where they release thermogenic gas, and subordinately in the Transylvanian Basin, where gas is mainly microbial. HYSED-RO may represent a key reference for baseline characterization prior to subsurface petroleum extraction, for environmental studies, and atmospheric greenhouse gas emission estimates in Romania.

Beschreibung: Phytoplankton in the ocean are extremely diverse. The abundance of various intracellular pigments are often used to study phytoplankton physiology and ecology, and identify and quantify different phytoplankton groups. In this study, phytoplankton absorption spectra (aph(λ)) derived from underway flow-through AC-S measurements in the Fram Strait are combined with phytoplankton pigment measurements analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to evaluate the retrieval of various pigment concentrations at high spatial resolution. The performances of two approaches, Gaussian decomposition and the matrix inversion technique are investigated and compared. Our study is the first to apply the matrix inversion technique to underway spectrophotometry data. We find that Gaussian decomposition provides good estimates (median absolute percentage error, MPE 21–34%) of total chlorophyll-a (TChl-a), total chlorophyll-b (TChl-b), the combination of chlorophyll-c1 and -c2 (Chl-c1/2), photoprotective (PPC) and photosynthetic carotenoids (PSC). This method outperformed one of the matrix inversion algorithms, i.e., singular value decomposition combined with non-negative least squares (SVD-NNLS), in retrieving TChl-b, Chl-c1/2, PSC, and PPC. However, SVD-NNLS enables robust retrievals of specific carotenoids (MPE 37–65%), i.e., fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin and 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, which is currently not accomplished by Gaussian decomposition. More robust predictions are obtained using the Gaussian decomposition method when the observed aph(λ) is normalized by the package effect index at 675 nm. The latter is determined as a function of “packaged” aph(675) and TChl-a concentration, which shows potential for improving pigment retrieval accuracy by the combined use of aph(λ) and TChl-a concentration data. To generate robust estimation statistics for the matrix inversion technique, we combine leave-one-out cross-validation with data perturbations. We find that both approaches provide useful information on pigment distributions, and hence, phytoplankton community composition indicators, at a spatial resolution much finer than that can be achieved with discrete samples.

Beschreibung: Exposed stones in sandy sublittoral environments are hotspots for marine biodiversity, especially for benthic communities. The detection of single stones is principally possible using sidescan-sonar (SSS) backscatter data. The data resolution has to be high to visualize the acoustic shadows of the stones. Otherwise, stony substrates will not be differentiable from other high backscatter substrates (e.g., gravel). Acquiring adequate sonar data and identifying stones in backscatter images is time consuming because it usually requires visual-manual procedures. To develop a more efficient identification and demarcation procedure of stone fields, sidescan sonar and parametric echo sound data were recorded within the marine protected area of “Sylt Outer Reef” (German Bight, North Sea). The investigated area (~5.900 km2) is characterized by dispersed heterogeneous moraine and marine deposits. Data from parametric sediment echo sounder indicate hyperbolas at the sediment surface in stony areas, which can easily be exported. By combining simultaneous recorded low backscatter data and parametric single beam data, stony grounds were demarcated faster, less complex and reproducible from gravelly substrates indicating similar high backscatter in the SSS data.

Beschreibung: Backscatter mosaics based on a multi-frequency multibeam echosounder survey in the continental shelf setting of the North Sea were compared. The uncalibrated backscatter data were recorded with frequencies of 200, 400 and 600 kHz. The results showed that the seafloor appears mostly featureless in acoustic backscatter mosaics derived from 600 kHz data. The same area surveyed with 200 kHz reveals numerous backscatter anomalies with diameters of 10–70 m deviating between −2 dB and +4 dB from the background sediment. Backscatter anomalies were further subdivided based on their frequency-specific texture and were attributed to bioturbation within the sediment and the presence of polychaetes on the seafloor. While low frequencies show the highest overall contrast between different seafloor types, a consideration of all frequencies permits an improved interpretation of subtle seafloor features.

Beschreibung: The study presented here is focused on the assessment of surface elevations derived from CryoSat-2 SARIn level 1b data over the Austfonna ice cap, Svalbard, in 2016. The processing chain that must be applied to the CryoSat-2 waveforms to derive heights is non-trivial, and consists of multiple steps, all requiring subjective choices of methods such as the choice of retracker, geo-relocation, and outlier rejection. Here, we compare six CryoSat-2 level-2 type data sets of surface elevations derived using different SARIn processing chains. These data sets are validated against surface elevation data collected from an airborne laser scanner, during a dedicated CryoSat validation experiment field campaign carried out in April 2016. The flight pattern of the airborne campaign was designed so that elevations were measured in a grid pattern rather than along single lines, as has previously been the standard procedure. The flight grid pattern was chosen to optimize the comparison with the CryoSat-2 SARIn elevation data, the location of which can deviate from nadir by several kilometers due to topography within the satellite footprint. The processing chains behind the six data sets include different outlier/error rejection approaches, and do not produce the same number of data points in our region of interest. To make a consistent analysis, we provide statistics from the validation of both the full data sets from each processing chain, and on only those data that all the six data sets provide a geo-located elevation estimate for. We find that the CryoSat-2 data sets that agree best with the validation data are those derived from dedicated land ice processing schemes. This study may serve as a benchmark for future CryoSat-2 retracker developments, and the evaluation software and data set are made publicly available.

Beschreibung: The timing of snowmelt is an important turning point in the seasonal cycle of small Arctic catchments. The TerraSAR-X (TSX) satellite mission is a synthetic aperture radar system (SAR) with high potential to measure the high spatiotemporal variability of snow cover extent (SCE) and fractional snow cover (FSC) on the small catchment scale. We investigate the performance of multi-polarized and multi-pass TSX X-Band SAR data in monitoring SCE and FSC in small Arctic tundra catchments of Qikiqtaruk (Herschel Island) off the Yukon Coast in the Western Canadian Arctic. We applied a threshold based segmentation on ratio images between TSX images with wet snow and a dry snow reference, and tested the performance of two different thresholds. We quantitatively compared TSX- and Landsat 8-derived SCE maps using confusion matrices and analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of snowmelt from 2015 to 2017 using TSX, Landsat 8 and in situ time lapse data. Our data showed that the quality of SCE maps from TSX X-Band data is strongly influenced by polarization and to a lesser degree by incidence angle. VH polarized TSX data performed best in deriving SCE when compared to Landsat 8. TSX derived SCE maps from VH polarization detected late lying snow patches that were not detected by Landsat 8. Results of a local assessment of TSX FSC against the in situ data showed that TSX FSC accurately captured the temporal dynamics of different snow melt regimes that were related to topographic characteristics of the studied catchments. Both in situ and TSX FSC showed a longer snowmelt period in a catchment with higher contributions of steep valleys and a shorter snowmelt period in a catchment with higher contributions of upland terrain. Landsat 8 had fundamental data gaps during the snowmelt period in all 3 years due to cloud cover. The results also revealed that by choosing a positive threshold of 1 dB, detection of ice layers due to diurnal temperature variations resulted in a more accurate estimation of snow cover than a negative threshold that detects wet snow alone. We find that TSX X-Band data in VH polarization performs at a comparable quality to Landsat 8 in deriving SCE maps when a positive threshold is used. We conclude that TSX data polarization can be used to accurately monitor snowmelt events at high temporal and spatial resolution, overcoming limitations of Landsat 8, which due to cloud related data gaps generally only indicated the onset and end of snowmelt.

Beschreibung: Yedoma—extremely ice-rich permafrost with massive ice wedges formed during the Late Pleistocene—is vulnerable to thawing and degradation under climate warming. Thawing of ice-rich Yedoma results in lowering of surface elevations. Quantitative knowledge about surface elevation changes helps us to understand the freeze-thaw processes of the active layer and the potential degradation of Yedoma deposits. In this study, we use C-band Sentinel-1 InSAR measurements to map the elevation changes over ice-rich Yedoma uplands on Sobo-Sise Island, Lena Delta with frequent revisit observations (as short as six or 12 days). We observe significant seasonal thaw subsidence during summer months and heterogeneous inter-annual elevation changes from 2016–17. We also observe interesting patterns of stronger seasonal thaw subsidence on elevated flat Yedoma uplands by comparing to the surrounding Yedoma slopes. Inter-annual analyses from 2016–17 suggest that our observed positive surface elevation changes are likely caused by the delayed progression of the thaw season in 2017, associated with mean annual air temperature fluctuations.

Beschreibung: Arctic and subarctic regions are sensitive to climate change and, reversely, provide dramatic feedbacks to the global climate. With a focus on discovering paleoclimate and paleoceanographic evolution in the Arctic and Northwest Pacific Oceans during the last 20,000 years, we proposed this German–Sino cooperation program according to the announcement “Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of the Federal Republic of Germany for a German–Sino cooperation program in the marine and polar research”. Our proposed program integrates the advantages of the Arctic and Subarctic marine sediment studies in AWI (Alfred Wegener Institute) and FIO (First Institute of Oceanography). For the first time, the collection of sediment cores can cover all climatological key regions in the Arctic and Northwest Pacific Oceans. Furthermore, the climate modeling work at AWI enables a “Data-Model Syntheses”, which are crucial for exploring the underlying mechanisms of observed changes in proxy records.

Beschreibung: An intercomparison of radiance and irradiance ocean color radiometers (the second laboratory comparison exercise—LCE-2) was organized within the frame of the European Space Agency funded project Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Color (FRM4SOC) May 8–13, 2017 at Tartu Observatory, Estonia. LCE-2 consisted of three sub-tasks: (1) SI-traceable radiometric calibration of all the participating radiance and irradiance radiometers at the Tartu Observatory just before the comparisons; (2) indoor, laboratory intercomparison using stable radiance and irradiance sources in a controlled environment; (3) outdoor, field intercomparison of natural radiation sources over a natural water surface. The aim of the experiment was to provide a link in the chain of traceability from field measurements of water reflectance to the uniform SI-traceable calibration, and after calibration to verify whether dierent instruments measuring the same object provide results consistent within the expected uncertainty limits. This paper describes the third phase of LCE-2: The results of the field experiment. The calibration of radiometers and laboratory comparison experiment are presented in a related paper of the same journal issue. Compared to the laboratory comparison, the field intercomparison has demonstrated substantially larger variability between freshly calibrated sensors, because the targets and environmental conditions during radiometric calibration were dierent, both spectrally and spatially. Major dierences were found for radiance sensors measuring a sunlit water target at viewing zenith angle of 139 because of the dierent fields of view. Major dierences were found for irradiance sensors because of imperfect cosine response of diusers. Variability between individual radiometers did depend significantly also on the type of the sensor and on the specific measurement target. Uniform SI traceable radiometric calibration ensuring fairly good consistency for indoor, laboratory measurements is insucient for outdoor, field measurements, mainly due to the dierent angular variability of illumination. More stringent specifications and individual testing of radiometers for all relevant systematic eects (temperature, nonlinearity, spectral stray light, etc.) are needed to reduce biases between instruments and better quantify measurement uncertainties.

The aim of the experiment was to provide one link in the chain of traceability from field measurements of water reflectance to the uniform SI-traceable calibration, and after calibration to verify whether dierent instruments measuring the same object provide results consistent within the expected uncertainty limits. This paper describes the activities and results of the first two phases of LCE-2: the SI-traceable radiometric calibration and indoor intercomparison, the results of outdoor experiment are presented in a related paper of the same journal issue. The indoor experiment of the LCE-2 has proven that uniform calibration just before the use of radiometers is highly eective. Distinct radiometers from dierent manufacturers operated by dierent scientists can yield quite close radiance and irradiance results (standard deviation s 〈 1%) under defined conditions. This holds when measuring stable lamp-based targets under stationary laboratory conditions with all the radiometers uniformly calibrated against the same standards just prior to the experiment. In addition, some unification of measurement and data processing must be settled. Uncertaint of radiance and irradiance measurement under these conditions largely consists of the sensor’s calibration uncertainty and of the spread of results obtained by individual sensors measuring the same object.

Beschreibung: Real-time quality-controlled surface current data derived from X-Band marine radar (MR) measurements were evaluated to estimate their operational reliability. The presented data were acquired by the standard commercial o-the-shelf MR-based sigma s6 WaMoS® II (WaMoS® II) deployed onboard the German Research vessel Polarstern. The measurement reliability is specified by an IQ value obtained by the WaMoS® II real-time quality control (rtQC). Data which pass the rtQC without objection are assumed to be reliable. For these data sets accuracy and correlation with corresponding vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements are determined. To reduce potential misinterpretation due to short-term oceanic variability/turbulences, the evaluation of the WaMoS® II accuracy was carried out based on sliding means over 20 min of the reliable data only. The associated standard deviation WaMoS = 0.02 m/s of the meanWaMoS® II measurements reflect a high precision of the measurement and the successful rtQC during dierent wave, current and weather conditions. The direct comparison of 7272 WaMoS® II/ADCP northward and eastward velocity data pairs yield a correlation of r 0.94, with jbiasDj 0.06 m/s and S = 0.05 m/s. This confirms that the MR-based surface current measurements are accurate and reliable.

Beschreibung: Coring sediments in subglacial aquatic environments offers unique opportunities for research on paleo-environments and paleo-climates because it can provide data from periods even earlier than ice cores, as well as the overlying ice histories, interactions between ice and the water system, life forms in extreme habitats, sedimentology, and stratigraphy. However, retrieving sediment cores from a subglacial environment faces more difficulties than sediment coring in oceans and lakes, resulting in low yields from the most current subglacial sediment coring methods. The coring tools should pass through a hot water-drilled access borehole, then the water column, to reach the sediment layers. The access boreholes are size-limited by the hot water drilling tools and techniques. These holes are drilled through ice up to 3000–4000 m thick, with diameters ranging from 10–60 cm, and with a refreezing closure rate of up to 6 mm/h after being drilled. Several purpose-built streamline corers have been developed to pass through access boreholes and collect the sediment core. The main coring objectives are as follows: (i) To obtain undisturbed water–sediment cores, either singly or as multi-cores and (ii) to obtain long cores with minimal stratigraphic deformation. Subglacial sediment coring methods use similar tools to those used in lake and ocean coring. These methods include the following: Gravity coring, push coring, piston coring, hammer or percussion coring, vibrocoring, and composite methods. Several core length records have been attained by different coring methods, including a 290 cm percussion core from the sub-ice-shelf seafloor, a 400 cm piston core from the sub-ice-stream, and a 170 cm gravity core from a subglacial lake. There are also several undisturbed water–sediment cores that have been obtained by gravity corers or hammer corers. Most current coring tools are deployed by winch and cable facilities on the ice surface. There are three main limitations for obtaining long sediment cores which determines coring tool development, as follows: Hot-water borehole radial size restriction, the sedimentary structure, and the coring techniques. In this paper, we provide a general view on current developments in coring tools, including the working principles, corer characteristics, operational methods, coring site locations, field conditions, coring results, and possible technical improvements. Future prospects in corer design and development are also discussed.

Beschreibung: Air temperatures in the Arctic have increased substantially over the last decades, which has extensively altered the properties of the land surface. Capturing the state and dynamics of Land Surface Temperatures (LSTs) at high spatial detail is of high interest as LST is dependent on a variety of surficial properties and characterizes the land–atmosphere exchange of energy. Accordingly, this study analyses the influence of different physical surface properties on the long-term mean of the summer LST in the Arctic Mackenzie Delta Region (MDR) using Landsat 30 m-resolution imagery between 1985 and 2018 by taking advantage of the cloud computing capabilities of the Google Earth Engine. Multispectral indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Tasseled Cap greenness (TCG), brightness (TCB), and wetness (TCW) as well as topographic features derived from the TanDEM-X digital elevation model are used in correlation and multiple linear regression analyses to reveal their influence on the LST. Furthermore, surface alteration trends of the LST, NDVI, and NDWI are revealed using the Theil-Sen (T-S) regression method. The results indicate that the mean summer LST appears to be mostly influenced by the topographic exposition as well as the prevalent moisture regime where higher evapotranspiration rates increase the latent heat flux and cause a cooling of the surface, as the variance is best explained by the TCW and northness of the terrain. However, fairly diverse model outcomes for different regions of the MDR (R2 from 0.31 to 0.74 and RMSE from 0.51 °C to 1.73 °C) highlight the heterogeneity of the landscape in terms of influential factors and suggests accounting for a broad spectrum of different factors when modeling mean LSTs. The T-S analysis revealed large-scale wetting and greening trends with a mean decadal increase of the NDVI/NDWI of approximately +0.03 between 1985 and 2018, which was mostly accompanied by a cooling of the land surface given the inverse relationship between mean LSTs and vegetation and moisture conditions. Disturbance through wildfires intensifies the surface alterations locally and lead to significantly cooler LSTs in the long-term compared to the undisturbed surroundings.

Beschreibung: In this work, laboratory tests with live bivalves as well as the conceptual design of additively manufactured surrogate models are presented. The overall task of this work is to develop a surrogate best fitting to the live mussels tested in accordance to the identified surface descriptor, i.e., the Abbott–Firestone Curve, and to the hydrodynamic behaviour by means of drag and inertia coefficients. To date, very few investigations have focused on loads from currents as well as waves. Therefore, tests with a towing carriage were carried out in a wave flume. A custom-made rack using mounting clamps was built to facilitate carriage-run tests with minimal delays. Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) extracted from a site in Germany, which were kept in aerated seawater to ensure their survival for the test duration, were used. A set of preliminary results showed drag and inertia coefficients CD and CM ranging from 1.16–3.03 and 0.25 to 1.25. To derive geometrical models of the mussel dropper lines, 3-D point clouds were prepared by means of 3-D laser scanning to obtain a realistic surface model. Centered on the 3-D point cloud, a suitable descriptor for the mass distribution over the surface was identified and three 3-D printed surrogates of the blue mussel were developed for further testing. These were evaluated regarding their fit to the original 3-D point cloud of the live blue mussels via the chosen surface descriptor.

Beschreibung: Studying phytoplankton functional types (PFTs) from space is possible due to recent advances in remote sensing. Though a variety of products are available, the limited number of wavelengths available compared to the number of model parameters needed to be retrieved is still a major problem in using ocean-color data for PFT retrievals. Here, we investigated which band placement could improve retrievals of three particular PFTs (diatoms, coccolithophores and cyanobacteria). In addition to analyzing dominant spectral features in the absorption spectra of the target PFTs, two previously-developed methods using measured spectra were applied to simulated data. Such a synthetic dataset allowed for significantly increasing the number of scenarios and enabled a full control over parameters causing spectral changes. We evaluated the chosen band placement by applying an adapted ocean reflectance inversion, as utilized in the generalized inherent optical properties (GIOP) retrieval. Results show that the optimal band settings depend on the method applied to determine the bands placement, as well as on the internal variability of the dataset investigated. Therefore, continuous hyperspectral instruments would be most beneficial for discriminating multiple PFTs, though a small improvement in spectral sampling and resolution does not significantly modify the results. Bands, which could be added to future instruments (e.g., Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) instrument on the upcoming Sentinel-3B,-3C,-3D, etc., and further satellites) in order to enhance PFT retrieval capabilities, were also determined.

Beschreibung: We analyzed chlorophyll-a and Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) dynamics from field measurements and assessed the potential of multispectral satellite data for retrieving water-quality parameters in three small surface reservoirs in the Brazilian semiarid region. More specifically, this work is comprised of: (i) analysis of Chl-a and trophic dynamics; (ii) characterization of CDOM; (iii) estimation of Chl-a and CDOM from OLI/Landsat-8 and RapidEye imagery. The monitoring lasted 20 months within a multi-year drought, which contributed to water-quality deterioration. Chl-a and trophic state analysis showed a highly eutrophic status for the perennial reservoir during the entire study period, while the non-perennial reservoirs ranged from oligotrophic to eutrophic, with changes associated with the first events of the rainy season. CDOM characterization suggests that the perennial reservoir is mostly influenced by autochthonous sources, while allochthonous sources dominate the non-perennial ones. Spectral-group classification assigned the perennial reservoir as a CDOM-moderate and highly eutrophic reservoir, whereas the non-perennial ones were assigned as CDOM-rich and oligotrophic-dystrophic reservoirs. The remote sensing initiative was partially successful: the Chl-a was best modelled using RapidEye for the perennial one; whereas CDOM performed best with Landsat-8 for non-perennial reservoirs. This investigation showed potential for retrieving water quality parameters in dry areas with small reservoirs

Beschreibung: In this study, we analyze interactions in lake and lake catchment systems of a continuous permafrost area. We assessed colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption at 440 nm (a(440)CDOM) and absorption slope (S300–500) in lakes using field sampling and optical remote sensing data for an area of 350 km2 in Central Yamal, Siberia. Applying a CDOM algorithm (ratio of green and red band reflectance) for two high spatial resolution multispectral GeoEye-1 and Worldview-2 satellite images, we were able to extrapolate the a(λ)CDOM data from 18 lakes sampled in the field to 356 lakes in the study area (model R2 = 0.79). Values of a(440)CDOM in 356 lakes varied from 0.48 to 8.35 m−1 with a median of 1.43 m−1. This a(λ)CDOM dataset was used to relate lake CDOM to 17 lake and lake catchment parameters derived from optical and radar remote sensing data and from digital elevation model analysis in order to establish the parameters controlling CDOM in lakes on the Yamal Peninsula. Regression tree model and boosted regression tree analysis showed that the activity of cryogenic processes (thermocirques) in the lake shores and lake water level were the two most important controls, explaining 48.4% and 28.4% of lake CDOM, respectively (R2 = 0.61). Activation of thermocirques led to a large input of terrestrial organic matter and sediments from catchments and thawed permafrost to lakes (n = 15, mean a(440)CDOM = 5.3 m−1). Large lakes on the floodplain with a connection to Mordy-Yakha River received more CDOM (n = 7, mean a(440)CDOM = 3.8 m−1) compared to lakes located on higher terraces.

Beschreibung: We studied two issues to be considered in the calculation of parameters characterizing sea ice deformation: the effect of uncertainties in an automatically retrieved sea ice drift field, and the influence of the type of drift vector grid. Sea ice deformation changes the local ice mass balance and the interaction between atmosphere, ice, and ocean, and constitutes a hazard to marine traffic and operations. Due to numerical effects, the results of deformation retrievals may predict, e.g., openings and closings of the ice cover that do not exist in reality. We focus specifically on fields of ice drift obtained from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and analyze the Propagated Drift Retrieval Error (PDRE) and the Boundary Definition Error (BDE). From the theory of error propagation, the PDRE for the calculated deformation parameters can be estimated. To quantify the BDE, we devise five different grid types and compare theoretical expectation and numerical results for different deformation parameters assuming three scenarios: pure divergence, pure shear, and a mixture of both. Our findings for both sources of error help to set up optimal deformation retrieval schemes and are also useful for other applications working with vector fields and scalar parameters derived therefrom.

Beschreibung: Abstract: The conservation of architectural heritage usually requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a variety of specialist expertise and techniques. Nevertheless, destructive techniques should be avoided, wherever possible, in order to preserve the integrity of the historical buildings, therefore the development of non-destructive and non-contact techniques is extremely important. In this framework, a methodology for combining the terrestrial laser scanning and the infrared thermal images is proposed, in order to obtain a reconnaissance of the conservation state of a historical building. The proposed case study is represented by St. Augustine Monumental Compound, located in the historical centre of the town of Cosenza (Calabria, South Italy). Adopting the proposed methodology, the paper illustrates the main results obtained for the building test overlaying and comparing the collected data with both techniques, in order to outline the capabilities both to detect the anomalies and to improve the knowledge on health state of the masonry building. The 3D model, also, allows to provide a reference model, laying the groundwork for implementation of a monitoring multisensor system based on the use of non-destructive techniques.

Beschreibung: The three volcanoes that are the object of this paper show different types of activity that are representative of the large variety of volcanism present in the Central Mediterranean area. Etna and Stromboli are sub-aerial volcanoes, with significant part of their structure under the sea, while the Marsili Seamount is submerged, and its activity is still open to debate. The study of these volcanoes can benefit from multi-parametric observations from the seafloor. Each volcano was studied with a different kind of observation system. Stromboli seismic recordings are acquired by means of a single Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS). From these data, it was possible to identify two different magma chambers at different depths. At Marsili Seamount, gravimetric and seismic signals are recorded by a battery-powered multi-disciplinary observatory (GEOSTAR). Gravimetric variations and seismic Short Duration Events (SDE) confirm the presence of hydrothermal activity. At the Etna observation site, seismic signals, water pressure, magnetic field and acoustic echo intensity are acquired in real-time thanks to a cabled multi-disciplinary observatory (NEMO-SN1 ). This observatory is one of the operative nodes of the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO; www.emso-eu.org) research infrastructure. Through a multidisciplinary approach, we speculate about deep Etna sources and follow some significant events, such as volcanic ash diffusion in the seawater.

Beschreibung: Automatic detection of icebergs in satellite images is regarded a useful tool to provide information necessary for safety in Arctic shipping or operations over large ocean areas in near-real time. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of automatic iceberg detection in Sentinel-1 Extra Wide Swath (EWS) SAR images which follow the preferred image mode in operational ice charting. As test region, we selected the Barents Sea where the size of many icebergs is on the order of the spatial resolution of the EWS-mode. We tested a new approach for a detection scheme. It is based on a combination of a filter for enhancing the contrast between icebergs and background, subsequent blob detection, and final application of a Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm. The filter relies mainly on the HV-polarized intensity which often reveals a larger difference between icebergs and sea ice or open water. The blob detector identifies locations of potential icebergs and thus shortens computation time. The final detection is performed on the identified blobs using the CFAR algorithm. About 2000 icebergs captured in fast ice were visually identified in Sentinel-2 Multi Spectral Imager (MSI) data and exploited for an assessment of the detection scheme performance using confusion matrices. For our performance tests, we used four Sentinel-1 EWS images. For judging the effect of spatial resolution, we carried out an additional test with one Sentinel-1 Interferometric Wide Swath (IWS) mode image. Our results show that only 8–22 percent of the icebergs could be detected in the EWS images, and over 90 percent of all detections were false alarms. In IWS mode, the number of correctly identified icebergs increased to 38 percent. However, we obtained a larger number of false alarms in the IWS image than in the corresponding EWS image. We identified two problems for iceberg detection: 1) with the given frequency–polarization combination, not all icebergs are strong scatterers at HV-polarization, and (2) icebergs and deformation structures present on fast ice can often not be distinguished since both may reveal equally strong responses at HV-polarization.

Beschreibung: Thermokarst lakes in the Arctic and Subarctic release carbon from thawing permafrost in the form of methane and carbon dioxide with important implications for regional and global carbon cycles. Lake ice impedes the release of gas during the winter. For instance, bubbles released from lake sediments become trapped in downward growing lake ice, resulting in vertically-oriented bubble columns in the ice that are visible on the lake surface. We here describe a classification technique using an object-based image analysis (OBIA) framework to successfully map ebullition bubbles in airborne imagery of early winter ice on an interior Alaska thermokarst lake. Ebullition bubbles appear as white patches in high-resolution optical remote sensing images of snow-free lake ice acquired in early winter and, thus, can be mapped across whole lake areas. We used high-resolution (9–11 cm) aerial images acquired two and four days following freeze-up in the years 2011 and 2012, respectively. The design of multiresolution segmentation and region-specific classification rulesets allowed the identification of bubble features and separation from other confounding factors such as snow, submerged and floating vegetation, shadows, and open water. The OBIA technique had an accuracy of 〉95% for mapping ebullition bubble patches in early winter lake ice. Overall, we mapped 1195 and 1860 ebullition bubble patches in the 2011 and 2012 images, respectively. The percent surface area of lake ice covered with ebullition bubble patches for 2011 was 2.14% and for 2012 was 2.67%, representing a conservative whole lake estimate of bubble patches compared to ground surveys usually conducted on thicker ice 10 or more days after freeze-up. Our findings suggest that the information derived from high-resolution optical images of lake ice can supplement spatially limited field sampling methods to better estimate methane flux from individual lakes. The method can also be used to improve estimates of methane ebullition from numerous lakes within larger regions.

Beschreibung: Light microscopy analysis of diatom frustules is widely used in basic and applied research, notably taxonomy, morphometrics, water quality monitoring and paleo-environmental studies. Although there is a need for automation in these applications, various developments in image processing and analysis methodology supporting these tasks have not become widespread in diatom-based analyses. We have addressed this issue by combining our automated diatom image analysis software SHERPA with a commercial slide-scanning microscope. The resulting workflow enables mass-analyses of a broad range of morphometric features from individual frustules mounted on permanent slides. Extensive automation and internal quality control of the results helps to minimize user intervention, but care was taken to allow the user to stay in control of the most critical steps (exact segmentation of valve outlines and selection of objects of interest) using interactive functions for reviewing and revising results. In this contribution, we describe our workflow and give an overview of factors critical for success, ranging from preparation and mounting through slide scanning and autofocus finding to final morphometric data extraction. To demonstrate the usability of our methods we finally provide an example application by analysing Fragilariopsis kerguelensis valves originating from a sediment core, which substantially extends the size range reported in the literature.

Beschreibung: We present an annotated list of new finds of red algae from Hainan Island, Southern China, including those found in 1990 and 1992 during the German-Chinese expeditions to Hainan Island and in 2008–2016 by Titlyanova, Titlyanov, and Li. Between 1990 and 1992, a total of 64 taxa of red algae were newly recorded for Hainan Island. Of these 15 species were new records for China. During the period 2008–2016, a further 54 taxa were newly recorded for Hainan Island, of which 20 were new records for China. The full list of new taxa includes taxonomic forms, dates, and locales, together with known biogeographical distributions. During both periods, the apparent enrichment of red algal marine flora has occurred in a similar way—mainly at the expense of epiphytes with filamentous, thin-filamentous, and finely branched forms. We believe that the changes in the flora of Hainan Island have been influenced by both anthropogenic and natural factors including in particular exploitation of herbivores, nutrient pollution, and coral bleaching.

Beschreibung: Alexandrium ostenfeldii is a toxic dinoflagellate that has recently bloomed in Ouwerkerkse Kreek, The Netherlands, and which is able to cause a serious threat to shellfish consumers and aquacultures. We used a large set of 68 strains to the aim of fully characterizing the toxin profiles of the Dutch A. ostenfeldii in consideration of recent reports of novel toxins. Alexandrium ostenfeldii is known as a causative species of paralytic shellfish poisoning, and consistently in the Dutch population we determined the presence of several paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) including saxitoxin (STX), GTX2/3 (gonyautoxins), B1 and C1/C2. We also examined the production of spiroimine toxins by the Dutch A. ostenfeldii strains. An extensive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis revealed a high intraspecific variability of spirolides (SPX) and gymnodimines (GYM). Spirolides included 13-desMethyl-spirolide C generally as the major compound and several other mostly unknown SPX-like compounds that were detected and characterized. Besides spirolides, the presence of gymnodimine A and 12-Methyl-gymnodimine A was confirmed, together with two new gymnodimines. One of these was tentatively identified as an analogue of gymnodimine D and was the most abundant gymnodimine (calculated cell quota up to 274 pg cell−1, expressed as GYM A equivalents). Our multi-clonal approach adds new analogues to the increasing number of compounds in these toxin classes and revealed a high strain variability in cell quota and in toxin profile of toxic compounds within a single population.

Beschreibung: Lakes are a ubiquitous landscape feature in northern permafrost regions. They have a strong impact on carbon, energy and water fluxes and can be quite responsive to climate change. The monitoring of lake change in northern high latitudes, at a sufficiently accurate spatial and temporal resolution, is crucial for understanding the underlying processes driving lake change. To date, lake change studies in permafrost regions were based on a variety of different sources, image acquisition periods and single snapshots, and localized analysis, which hinders the comparison of different regions. Here, we present a methodology based on machine-learning based classification of robust trends of multi-spectral indices of Landsat data (TM, ETM+, OLI) and object-based lake detection, to analyze and compare the individual, local and regional lake dynamics of four different study sites (Alaska North Slope, Western Alaska, Central Yakutia, Kolyma Lowland) in the northern permafrost zone from 1999 to 2014. Regional patterns of lake area change on the Alaska North Slope (−0.69%), Western Alaska (−2.82%), and Kolyma Lowland (−0.51%) largely include increases due to thermokarst lake expansion, but more dominant lake area losses due to catastrophic lake drainage events. In contrast, Central Yakutia showed a remarkable increase in lake area of 48.48%, likely resulting from warmer and wetter climate conditions over the latter half of the study period. Within all study regions, variability in lake dynamics was associated with differences in permafrost characteristics, landscape position (i.e., upland vs. lowland), and surface geology. With the global availability of Landsat data and a consistent methodology for processing the input data derived from robust trends of multi-spectral indices, we demonstrate a transferability, scalability and consistency of lake change analysis within the northern permafrost region.

Beschreibung: In permafrost areas, seasonal freeze-thaw cycles result in upward and downward movements of the ground. For some permafrost areas, long-term downward movements were reported during the last decade. We measured seasonal and multi-year ground movements in a yedoma region of the Lena River Delta, Siberia, in 2013–2017, using reference rods installed deep in the permafrost. The seasonal subsidence was 1.7 +- 1.5 cm in the cold summer of 2013 and 4.8 +- 2 cm in the warm summer of 2014. Furthermore, we measured a pronounced multi-year net subsidence of 9.3 +- 5.7 cm from spring 2013 to the end of summer 2017. Importantly, we observed a high spatial variability of subsidence of up to 6 cm across a sub-meter horizontal scale. In summer 2013, we accompanied our field measurements with Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) on repeat-pass TerraSAR-X (TSX) data from the summer of 2013 to detect summer thaw subsidence over the same study area. Interferometry was strongly affected by a fast phase coherence loss, atmospheric artifacts, and possibly the choice of reference point. A cumulative ground movement map, built from a continuous interferogram stack, did not reveal a subsidence on the upland but showed a distinct subsidence of up to 2 cm in most of the thermokarst basins. There, the spatial pattern of DInSAR-measured subsidence corresponded well with relative surface wetness identified with the near infra-red band of a high-resolution optical image. Our study suggests that (i) although X-band SAR has serious limitations for ground movement monitoring in permafrost landscapes, it can provide valuable information for specific environments like thermokarst basins, and (ii) due to the high sub-pixel spatial variability of ground movements, a validation scheme needs to be developed and implemented for future DInSAR studies in permafrost environments.

Beschreibung: Ocean colour is recognised as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV) by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS); and spectrally-resolved water-leaving radiances (or remote-sensing reflectances) in the visible domain, and chlorophyll-a concentration are identified as required ECV products. Time series of the products at the global scale and at high spatial resolution, derived from ocean-colour data, are key to studying the dynamics of phytoplankton at seasonal and inter-annual scales; their role in marine biogeochemistry; the global carbon cycle; the modulation of how phytoplankton distribute solar-induced heat in the upper layers of the ocean; and the response of the marine ecosystem to climate variability and change. However, generating a long time series of these products from ocean-colour data is not a trivial task: algorithms that are best suited for climate studies have to be selected from a number that are available for atmospheric correction of the satellite signal and for retrieval of chlorophyll-a concentration; since satellites have a finite life span, data from multiple sensors have to be merged to create a single time series, and any uncorrected inter-sensor biases could introduce artefacts in the series, e.g., different sensors monitor radiances at different wavebands such that producing a consistent time series of reflectances is not straightforward. Another requirement is that the products have to be validated against in situ observations. Furthermore, the uncertainties in the products have to be quantified, ideally on a pixel-by-pixel basis, to facilitate applications and interpretations that are consistent with the quality of the data. This paper outlines an approach that was adopted for generating an ocean-colour time series for climate studies, using data from the MERIS (MEdium spectral Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) sensor of the European Space Agency; the SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide-Field-of-view Sensor) and MODIS-Aqua (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer-Aqua) sensors from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (USA); and VIIRS (Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA). The time series now covers the period from late 1997 to end of 2018. To ensure that the products meet, as well as possible, the requirements of the user community, marine-ecosystem modellers, and remote-sensing scientists were consulted at the outset on their immediate and longer-term requirements as well as on their expectations of ocean-colour data for use in climate research. Taking the user requirements into account, a series of objective criteria were established, against which available algorithms for processing ocean-colour data were evaluated and ranked. The algorithms that performed best with respect to the climate user requirements were selected to process data from the satellite sensors. Remote-sensing reflectance data from MODIS-Aqua, MERIS, and VIIRS were band-shifted to match the wavebands of SeaWiFS. Overlapping data were used to correct for mean biases between sensors at every pixel. The remote-sensing reflectance data derived from the sensors were merged, and the selected in-water algorithm was applied to the merged data to generate maps of chlorophyll concentration, inherent optical properties at SeaWiFS wavelengths, and the diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490 nm. The merged products were validated against in situ observations. The uncertainties established on the basis of comparisons with in situ data were combined with an optical classification of the remote-sensing reflectance data using a fuzzy-logic approach, and were used to generate uncertainties (root mean square difference and bias) for each product at each pixel.

Beschreibung: The heat imbalance is the fundamental driver for the atmospheric circulation. Therefore, it is crucially important to understand how it responds to global warming. In this study, the role of the ocean in reshaping the atmospheric meridional heat imbalance is explored based on observations and climate simulations. We found that ocean tends to strengthen the meridional heat imbalance over the mid-latitudes. This is primarily because of the uneven ocean heat uptake between the subtropical and subpolar oceans. Under global warming, the subtropical ocean absorbs relatively less heat as the water there is well stratified. In contrast, the subpolar ocean is the primary region where the ocean heat uptake takes place, because the subpolar ocean is dominated by upwelling, strong mixing, and overturning circulation. We propose that the enhanced meridional heat imbalance may potentially contribute to strengthening the water cycle, westerlies, jet stream, and mid-latitude storms.

Beschreibung: The Arctic is directly impacted by climate change. The increase in air temperature drives the thawing of permafrost and an increase in coastal erosion and river discharge. This leads to a greater input of sediment and organic matter into coastal waters, which substantially impacts the ecosystems, the subsistence economy of the local population, and the climate because of the transformation of organic matter into greenhouse gases. Yet, the patterns of sediment dispersal in the nearshore zone are not well known, because ships do not often reach shallow waters and satellite remote sensing is traditionally focused on less dynamic environments. The goal of this study is to use the extensive Landsat archive to investigate sediment dispersal patterns specifically on an exemplary Arctic nearshore environment, where field measurements are often scarce. Multiple Landsat scenes were combined to calculate means of sediment dispersal and sea surface temperature under changing seasonal wind conditions in the nearshore zone of Herschel Island Qikiqtaruk in the western Canadian Arctic since 1982. We use observations in the Landsat red and thermal wavebands, as well as a recently published water turbidity algorithm to relate archive wind data to turbidity and sea surface temperature. We map the spatial patterns of turbidity and water temperature at high spatial resolution in order to resolve transport pathways of water and sediment at the water surface. Our results show that these pathways are clearly related to the prevailing wind conditions, being ESE and NW. During easterly wind conditions, both turbidity and water temperature are significantly higher in the nearshore area. The extent of the Mackenzie River plume and coastal erosion are the main explanatory variables for sediment dispersal and sea surface temperature distributions in the study area. During northwesterly wind conditions, the influence of the Mackenzie River plume is negligible. Our results highlight the potential of high spatial resolution Landsat imagery to detect small-scale hydrodynamic processes, but also show the need to specifically tune optical models for Arctic nearshore environments.

Beschreibung: Time-variable gravity measurements from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) missions and satellite altimetry measurements from CryoSat-2 enable independent mass balance estimates of the Earth’s glaciers and ice sheets. Both approaches vary in terms of their retrieval principles and signal-to-noise characteristics. GRACE/GRACE-FO recovers the gravity disturbance caused by changes in the mass of the entire ice sheet with a spatial resolution of 300 to 400 km. In contrast, CryoSat-2measures travel times of a radar signal reflected close to the ice sheet surface, allowing changes of the surface topography to be determined with about 5 km spatial resolution. Here, we present a method to combine observations from the both sensors, taking into account the different signal and noise characteristics of each satellite observation that are dependent on the spatial wavelength. We include uncertainties introduced by the processing and corrections, such as the choice of the re-tracking algorithm and the snow/ice volume density model for CryoSat-2, or the filtering of correlated errors and the correction for glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA) for GRACE. We apply our method to the Antarctic ice sheet and the time period 2011–2017, in which GRACE and CryoSat-2 were simultaneously operational, obtaining a total ice mass loss of 178 ± 23 Gt yr−1. We present a map of the rate of mass change with a spatial resolution of 40 km that is evaluable across all spatial scales, and more precise than estimates based on a single satellite mission.

Beschreibung: This work focuses on the study of land subsidence processes by means of multi-temporal and multi-frequency InSAR techniques. Specifically, we retrieve the long-term evolution (2003–2018) of the creeping phenomenon producing ground fissuring in the Ciudad Guzmán (Jalisco state, Mexico) urban area. The city is located on the northern side of the Volcan de Colima area, one of the most active Mexican volcanoes. On September 21 2012, Ciudad Guzmán was struck by ground fissures of about 1.5 km of length, causing the deformation of the roads and the propagation of fissures in adjacent buildings. The field surveys showed that fissures follow the escarpments produced during the central Mexico September 19 1985 Mw 8.1 earthquake. We extended the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometric monitoring starting with the multi-temporal analysis of ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed datasets, allowing the monitoring of the observed subsidence phenomena a ecting the Mexican city. We processed a new stack of Sentinel-1 TOPSAR acquisition mode images along both descending and ascending paths and spanning the 2016–2018 temporal period. The resulting long-term trend observed by satellites, together with data from volcanic bulletin and in situ surveys, seems to suggest that the subsidence is due to the exploitation of the aquifers and that the spatial arrangement of ground deformation is controlled by the position of buried faults.

Beschreibung: Salt marshes are valuable ecosystems that are vulnerable to lateral erosion, submergence, and internal disintegration due to sea level rise, storms, and sediment deficits. Because many salt marshes are losing area in response to these factors, it is important to monitor their lateral extent at high resolution over multiple timescales. In this study we describe two methods to calculate the location of the salt marsh shoreline. The marsh edge from elevation data (MEED) method uses remotely sensed elevation data to calculate an objective proxy for the shoreline of a salt marsh. This proxy is the abrupt change in elevation that usually characterizes the seaward edge of a salt marsh, designated the “marsh scarp.” It is detected as the maximum slope along a cross-shore transect between mean high water and mean tide level. The method was tested using lidar topobathymetric and photogrammetric elevation data from Massachusetts, USA. The other method to calculate the salt marsh shoreline is the marsh edge by image processing (MEIP) method which finds the unvegetated/vegetated line. This method applies image classification techniques to multispectral imagery and elevation datasets for edge detection. The method was tested using aerial imagery and coastal elevation data from the Plum Island Estuary in Massachusetts, USA. Both methods calculate a line that closely follows the edge of vegetation seen in imagery. The two methods were compared to each other using high resolution unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) data, and to a heads-up digitized shoreline. The root-mean-square deviation was 0.6 meters between the two methods, and less than 0.43 meters from the digitized shoreline. The MEIP method was also applied to a lower resolution dataset to investigate the effect of horizontal resolution on the results. Both methods provide an accurate, efficient, and objective way to track salt marsh shorelines with spatially intensive data over large spatial scales, which is necessary to evaluate geomorphic change and wetland vulnerability.

Beschreibung: Swimming bell kinematics and hydrodynamic wake structures were documented during multiple pulsation cycles of a Eutonina indicans (Romanes, 1876) medusa swimming in a predominantly linear path. Bell contractions produced pairs of vortex rings with opposite rotational sense. Analyses of the momentum flux in these wake structures demonstrated that vortex dynamics related directly to variations in the medusa swimming speed. Furthermore, a bulk of the momentum flux in the wake was concentrated spatially at the interfaces between oppositely rotating vortices rings. Similar thrust-producing wake structures have been described in models of fish swimming, which posit vortex rings as vehicles for energy transport from locations of body bending to regions where interacting pairs of opposite-sign vortex rings accelerate the flow into linear propulsive jets. These findings support efforts toward soft robotic biomimetic propulsion

Beschreibung: Pamphobeteus verdolaga is a recently described Theraphosidae spider from the Andean region of Colombia. Previous reports partially characterized its venom profile. In this study, we conducted a detailed analysis that includes reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (rp-HPLC), calcium influx assays, tandem mass spectrometry analysis (tMS/MS), and venom-gland transcriptome. rp-HPLC fractions of P. verdolaga venom showed activity on CaV2.2, CaV3.2, and NaV1.7 ion channels. Active fractions contained several peptides with molecular masses ranging from 3399.4 to 3839.6 Da. The tMS/MS analysis of active fraction displaying the strongest activity to inhibit calcium channels showed sequence fragments similar to one of the translated transcripts detected in the venom-gland transcriptome. The putative peptide of this translated transcript corresponded to a toxin, here named ω-theraphositoxin-Pv3a, a potential ion channel modulator toxin that is, in addition, very similar to other theraphositoxins affecting calcium channels (i.e., ω-theraphotoxin-Asp1a). Additionally, using this holistic approach, we found that P. verdolaga venom is an important source of disulfide-rich proteins expressing at least eight superfamilies.

Beschreibung: Measurements of optical properties have been used for decades to study particle distributions in the ocean. They are useful for estimating suspended mass concentration as well as particle-related properties such as size, composition, packing (particle porosity or density), and settling velocity. Measurements of optical properties are, however, biased, as certain particles, because of their size, composition, shape, or packing, contribute to a specific property more than others. Here, we study this issue both theoretically and practically, and we examine different optical properties collected simultaneously in a bottom boundary layer to highlight the utility of such measurements. We show that the biases we are likely to encounter using different optical properties can aid our studies of suspended sediment. In particular, we investigate inferences of settling velocity from vertical profiles of optical measurements, finding that the effects of aggregation dynamics can seldom be ignored.

Analysis and visualization of coastal ocean model data in the cloud. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 7(4), (2019);110, doi:10.3390/jmse7040110.
Beschreibung: The traditional flow of coastal ocean model data is from High-Performance Computing (HPC) centers to the local desktop, or to a file server where just the needed data can be extracted via services such as OPeNDAP. Analysis and visualization are then conducted using local hardware and software. This requires moving large amounts of data across the internet as well as acquiring and maintaining local hardware, software, and support personnel. Further, as data sets increase in size, the traditional workflow may not be scalable. Alternatively, recent advances make it possible to move data from HPC to the Cloud and perform interactive, scalable, data-proximate analysis and visualization, with simply a web browser user interface. We use the framework advanced by the NSF-funded Pangeo project, a free, open-source Python system which provides multi-user login via JupyterHub and parallel analysis via Dask, both running in Docker containers orchestrated by Kubernetes. Data are stored in the Zarr format, a Cloud-friendly n-dimensional array format that allows performant extraction of data by anyone without relying on data services like OPeNDAP. Interactive visual exploration of data on complex, large model grids is made possible by new tools in the Python PyViz ecosystem, which can render maps at screen resolution, dynamically updating on pan and zoom operations. Two examples are given: (1) Calculating the maximum water level at each grid cell from a 53-GB, 720-time-step, 9-million-node triangular mesh ADCIRC simulation of Hurricane Ike; (2) Creating a dashboard for visualizing data from a curvilinear orthogonal COAWST/ROMS forecast model.

Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 7(6), (2019): 167, doi:10.3390/jmse7060167.
Beschreibung: Many marine organisms have a well-known adult sessile stage. Unfortunately, our lack of knowledge regarding their larval transient stage hinders our understanding of their basic ecology and connectivity. Larvae can have swimming behavior that influences their transport within the marine environment. Understanding the larval stage provides insight into population connectivity that can help strategically identify areas for restoration. Current techniques for understanding the larval stage include modeling that combines particle attributes (e.g., larval behavior) with physical processes of water movement to contribute to our understanding of connectivity trends. This study builds on those methods by using a previously developed retention clock matrix (RCM) to illustrate time dependent connectivity of two species of shellfish between areas and over a range of larval durations. The RCM was previously used on physical parameters but we expand the concept by applying it to biology. A new metric, difference RCM (DRCM), is introduced to quantify changes in connectivity under different scenarios. Broad spatial trends were similar for all behavior types with a general south to north progression of particles. The DRCMs illustrate differences between neutral particles and those with behavior in northern regions where stratification was higher, indicating that larval behavior influenced transport. Based on these findings, particle behavior led to small differences (north to south movement) in transport patterns in areas with higher salinity gradients (the northern part of the system) compared to neutral particles. Overall, the dominant direction for particle movement was from south to north, which at times was enhanced by winds from the south. Clam and oyster restoration in the southern portion of Barnegat Bay could serve as a larval supply for populations in the north. These model results show that coupled hydrodynamic and particle tracking models have implications for fisheries management and restoration activities.

Ophiolitic pyroxenites record boninite percolation in subduction zone mantle. Minerals, 9(9), (2019): 565, doi: 10.3390/min9090565.
Beschreibung: The peridotite section of supra-subduction zone ophiolites is often crosscut by pyroxenite veins, reflecting the variety of melts that percolate through the mantle wedge, react, and eventually crystallize in the shallow lithospheric mantle. Understanding the nature of parental melts and the timing of formation of these pyroxenites provides unique constraints on melt infiltration processes that may occur in active subduction zones. This study deciphers the processes of orthopyroxenite and clinopyroxenite formation in the Josephine ophiolite (USA), using new trace and major element analyses of pyroxenite minerals, closure temperatures, elemental profiles, diffusion modeling, and equilibrium melt calculations. We show that multiple melt percolation events are required to explain the variable chemistry of peridotite-hosted pyroxenite veins, consistent with previous observations in the xenolith record. We argue that the Josephine ophiolite evolved in conditions intermediate between back-arc and sub-arc. Clinopyroxenites formed at an early stage of ophiolite formation from percolation of high-Ca boninites. Several million years later, and shortly before exhumation, orthopyroxenites formed through remelting of the Josephine harzburgites through percolation of ultra-depleted low-Ca boninites. Thus, we support the hypothesis that multiple types of boninites can be created at different stages of arc formation and that ophiolitic pyroxenites uniquely record the timing of boninite percolation in subduction zone mantle.

Beschreibung: The Arctic-Boreal regions experience strong changes of air temperature and precipitation regimes, which affect the thermal state of the permafrost. This results in widespread permafrost-thaw disturbances, some unfolding slowly and over long periods, others occurring rapidly and abruptly. Despite optical remote sensing offering a variety of techniques to assess and monitor landscape changes, a persistent cloud cover decreases the amount of usable images considerably. However, combining data from multiple platforms promises to increase the number of images drastically. We therefore assess the comparability of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery and the possibility to use both Landsat and Sentinel-2 images together in time series analyses, achieving a temporally-dense data coverage in Arctic-Boreal regions. We determined overlapping same-day acquisitions of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images for three representative study sites in Eastern Siberia. We then compared the Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 pixel-pairs, downscaled to 60 m, of corresponding bands and derived the ordinary least squares regression for every band combination. The acquired coefficients were used for spectral bandpass adjustment between the two sensors. The spectral band comparisons showed an overall good fit between Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images already. The ordinary least squares regression analyses underline the generally good spectral fit with intercept values between 0.0031 and 0.056 and slope values between 0.531 and 0.877. A spectral comparison after spectral bandpass adjustment of Sentinel-2 values to Landsat-8 shows a nearly perfect alignment between the same-day images. The spectral band adjustment succeeds in adjusting Sentinel-2 spectral values to Landsat-8 very well in Eastern Siberian Arctic-Boreal landscapes. After spectral adjustment, Landsat and Sentinel-2 data can be used to create temporally-dense time series and be applied to assess permafrost landscape changes in Eastern Siberia. Remaining differences between the sensors can be attributed to several factors including heterogeneous terrain, poor cloud and cloud shadow masking, and mixed pixels.

Beschreibung: In situ and remote-sensing measurements have been used to characterize the run-up phase and the phenomena that occurred during the August–November 2014 flank eruption at Stromboli. Data comprise videos recorded by the visible and infrared camera network, ground displacement recorded by the permanent-sited Ku-band, Ground-Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (GBInSAR) device, seismic signals (band 0.02–10 Hz), and high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) reconstructed based on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and tri-stereo PLEIADES-1 imagery. This work highlights the importance of considering data from in situ sensors and remote-sensing platforms in monitoring active volcanoes. Comparison of data from live-cams, tremor amplitude, localization of Very-Long-Period (VLP) source and amplitude of explosion quakes, and ground displacements recorded by GBInSAR in the crater terrace provide information about the eruptive activity, nowcasting the shift in eruptive style of explosive to effusive. At the same time, the landslide activity during the run-up and onset phases could be forecasted and tracked using the integration of data from the GBInSAR and the seismic landslide index. Finally, the use of airborne and space-borne DEMs permitted the detection of topographic changes induced by the eruptive activity, allowing for the estimation of a total volume of 3.07 ± 0.37 × 106 m3 of the 2014 lava flow field emplaced on the steep Sciara del Fuoco slope.

Beschreibung: We collected and analysed 58 samples of groundwater from wells in the Barcellona-Milazzo Plain, one of the most important coastal aquifers of Sicily (Italy), to determine major, minor, and trace element concentrations. In this area, geogenic and anthropogenic sources of heavy metals and other pollutants co-act, making the individuation of the main pollution sources difficult. Our work was aimed at the application of geostatistical criteria for discriminating between these pollution sources. We used probability plots for separating anomalous values from background concentrations, which were plotted on maps and related to possible sources of pollutants. Our results indicate that hydrothermal fluid circulation and the water–rock interaction of country rocks that host mineralized ore deposits generate a significant flux of heavy metals to groundwater, as well as anthropogenic sources like intense agriculture and industrial activities. In particular, NO3, F, and Ni exceed the Maximum Admitted Concentrations (MACs) established by the WHO and Italian legislation for drinking-water. The spatial distributions of geogenic and anthropogenic sources were so deeply interlocked that their separation was not easy, also employing geostatistical tools. This complex scenario makes the implementation of human health risk mitigation actions difficult, since the flow of pollutants is in many cases controlled by simple water–rock interaction processes.

Beschreibung: The colonial cnidarian, Nanomia bijuga, is highly proficient at moving in three-dimensional space through forward swimming, reverse swimming and turning. We used high speed videography, particle tracking, and particle image velocimetry (PIV) with frame rates up to 6400 s−1 to study the kinematics and fluid mechanics of N. bijuga during turning and reversing. N. bijuga achieved turns with high maneuverability (mean length–specific turning radius, R/L = 0.15 ± 0.10) and agility (mean angular velocity, ω = 104 ± 41 deg. s−1). The maximum angular velocity of N. bijuga, 215 deg. s−1, exceeded that of many vertebrates with more complex body forms and neurocircuitry. Through the combination of rapid nectophore contraction and velum modulation, N. bijuga generated high speed, narrow jets (maximum = 1063 ± 176 mm s−1; 295 nectophore lengths s−1) and thrust vectoring, which enabled high speed reverse swimming (maximum = 134 ± 28 mm s−1; 37 nectophore lengths s−1) that matched previously reported forward swimming speeds. A 1:1 ratio of forward to reverse swimming speed has not been recorded in other swimming organisms. Taken together, the colonial architecture, simple neurocircuitry, and tightly controlled pulsed jets by N. bijuga allow for a diverse repertoire of movements. Considering the further advantages of scalability and redundancy in colonies, N. bijuga is a model system for informing underwater propulsion and navigation of complex environments.

Beschreibung: Hyperspectral imagers enable the collection of high-resolution spectral images exploitable for the supervised classification of habitats and objects of interest (OOI). Although this is a well-established technology for the study of subaerial environments, Ecotone AS has developed an underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) system to explore the properties of the seafloor. The aim of the project is to evaluate the potential of this instrument for mapping and monitoring benthic habitats in shallow and deep-water environments. For the first time, we tested this system at two sites in the Southern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea): the cold-water coral (CWC) habitat in the Bari Canyon and the Coralligenous habitat off Brindisi. We created a spectral library for each site, considering the different substrates and the main OOI reaching, where possible, the lower taxonomic rank. We applied the spectral angle mapper (SAM) supervised classification to map the areal extent of the Coralligenous and to recognize the major CWC habitat-formers. Despite some technical problems, the first results demonstrate the suitability of the UHI camera for habitat mapping and seabed monitoring, through the achievement of quantifiable and repeatable classifications.

Beschreibung: The sea-ice climatology and sea-ice trends and variability are evaluated in simulations with the new version of the coupled Arctic atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model HIRHAM–NAOSIM 2.0. This version utilizes upgraded model components for the coupled subsystems, which include physical and numerical improvements and higher horizontal and vertical resolution, and a revised coupling procedure with the aid of the coupling software YAC (Yet Another Coupler). The model performance is evaluated against observationally based data sets and compared with the previous version. Ensemble simulations for the period 1979–2016 reveal that Arctic sea ice is thicker in all seasons and closer to observations than in the previous version. Wintertime biases in sea-ice extent, upper ocean temperatures, and near-surface air temperatures are reduced, while summertime biases are of similar magnitude as in the previous version. Problematic issues of the current model configuration and potential corrective measures and further developments are discussed.

Sustainability, 11(13), (2019): 3709, doi:10.3390/su11133709.
Beschreibung: On 23 August, 2017, Typhoon Hato rapidly intensified by 10 kt within 3 h just prior to landfall in the city of Macau along the South China coast. Hato’s surface winds in excess of 50 m s−1 devastated the city, causing unprecedented damage and social impact. This study reveals that anomalously warm ocean conditions in the nearshore shallow water (depth 〈 30 m) likely played a key role in Hato’s fast intensification. In particular, cooling of the sea surface temperature (SST) generated by Hato at the critical landfall point was estimated to be only 0.1–0.5 °C. The results from both a simple ocean mixing scheme and full dynamical ocean model indicate that SST cooling was minimized in the shallow coastal waters due to a lack of cool water at depth. Given the nearly invariant SST in the coastal waters, we estimate a large amount of heat flux, i.e., 1.9k W m−2, during the landfall period. Experiments indicate that in the absence of shallow bathymetry, and thus, if nominal cool water had been available for vertical mixing, the SST cooling would have been enhanced from 0.1 °C to 1.4 °C, and sea to air heat flux reduced by about a quarter. Numerical simulations with an atmospheric model suggest that the intensity of Hato was very sensitive to air-sea heat flux in the coastal region, indicating the critical importance of coastal ocean hydrography.

Beschreibung: Wind-induced sea level blowouts, measured as negative storm surge or extreme low water (ELW), produce public safety hazards and impose economic costs (e.g., to shipping). In this paper, we use a regional hydrodynamic numerical model to test the effect of historical environmental change and the time scale, direction, and magnitude of wind forcing on negative and positive surge events in the New York Harbor (NYH). Environmental sensitivity experiments show that dredging of shipping channels is an important factor affecting blowouts while changing ice cover and removal of other roughness elements are unimportant in NYH. Continuously measured water level records since 1860 show a trend towards smaller negative surge magnitudes (measured minus predicted water level) but do not show a significant change to ELW magnitudes after removing the sea-level trend. Model results suggest that the smaller negative surges occur in the deeper, dredged modern system due to a reduced tide-surge interaction, primarily through a reduced phase shift in the predicted tide. The sensitivity of surge to wind direction changes spatially with remote wind effects dominating local wind effects near NYH. Convergent coastlines that amplify positive surges also amplify negative surges, a process we term inverse coastal funneling.

Beschreibung: The air–sea heat fluxes in marginal seas and under extreme weather conditions constitute an essential source for energy transport and mixing dynamics. To reproduce these effects in numerical models, we need a better understanding of these fluxes. In response to this demand, we undertook a study to examine the surface heat fluxes in the Arabian Gulf (2013 to 2014) and Red Sea (2008 to 2010)—the two salty Indian Ocean marginal seas. We use high-quality buoy observations from offshore meteorological stations and data from two reanalysis products, the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA2) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and ERA5, the fifth generation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalyses of global climate. Comparison of the reanalyses with the in situ-derived fluxes shows that both products underestimate the net heat fluxes in the Gulf and the Red Sea, with biases up to −45 W/m 2 in MERRA2. The reanalyses reproduce relatively well the seasonal variability in the two regions and the effects of wind events on air–sea fluxes. The results suggest that when forcing numerical models, ERA5 might provide a preferable dataset of surface heat fluxes for the Arabian Gulf while for the Red Sea the MERRA2 seems preferable.

Beschreibung: Histone methylation patterns are important epigenetic regulators of mammalian development, notably through stem cell identity maintenance by chromatin remodeling and transcriptional control of pluripotency genes. But, the implications of histone marks are poorly understood in distant groups outside vertebrates and ecdysozoan models. However, the development of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is under the strong epigenetic influence of DNA methylation, and Jumonji histone-demethylase orthologues are highly expressed during C. gigas early life. This suggests a physiological relevance of histone methylation regulation in oyster development, raising the question of functional conservation of this epigenetic pathway in lophotrochozoan. Quantification of histone methylation using fluorescent ELISAs during oyster early life indicated significant variations in monomethyl histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4me), an overall decrease in H3K9 mono- and tri-methylations, and in H3K36 methylations, respectively, whereas no significant modification could be detected in H3K27 methylation. Early in vivo treatment with the JmjC-specific inhibitor Methylstat induced hypermethylation of all the examined histone H3 lysines and developmental alterations as revealed by scanning electronic microscopy. Using microarrays, we identified 376 genes that were differentially expressed under methylstat treatment, which expression patterns could discriminate between samples as indicated by principal component analysis. Furthermore, Gene Ontology revealed that these genes were related to processes potentially important for embryonic stages such as binding, cell differentiation and development. These results suggest an important physiological significance of histone methylation in the oyster embryonic and larval life, providing, to our knowledge, the first insights into epigenetic regulation by histone methylation in lophotrochozoan development.

Beschreibung: In the present work, the performance of carbon nanotubes (c-CNTs) functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based coatings as extractive phases for in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled to Capillary LC (CapLC) has been evaluated. Carboxylic-single walled carbon nanotubes (c-SWNTs) and carboxylic-multi walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWNTs) have been immobilized on the activated surface of PDMS capillary columns. The effect of different percentages of diphenyl groups in the PDMS extractive phase has also been evaluated. The extraction capability of the capillary columns has been tested for different organic pollutants, nitrogen heterocyclic compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs). The results indicated that the use of the c-CNTs-PDMS capillary columns improve pyriproxyfen and mainly PAH extraction. Triazines were better extracted by unmodified TRB-35 and modified c-CNTs-PDMSTRB-5. The results showed that the extraction capability of the c-CNT capillary columns depends not only on the polarity of the analytes (as it occurs with PDMS columns) but also on the interactions that the analytes can establish with the immobilized c-CNTs on the PDMS columns. The extraction efficiency has been evaluated on the basis of the preconcentration rate that can be achieved, and, in this sense, the best c-CNTs-PDMS capillary column for each group of compounds can be proposed.

Beschreibung: Postdisaster search and rescue is an important application of ultrawideband (UWB) radar systems, which mainly detect trapped victims by their respiratory-motion response. The development of a respiratory-motion detection (RMD) algorithm that can eliminate nonstationary clutter and noise is a challenging task for the application. A new algorithm is proposed to deal with the task in this letter. It uses the multichannel singular spectrum analysis (MSSA) technique to reconstruct the respiratory-motion response detected by a UWB radar. During the reconstruction, the periodicity and range interrelation characteristics of the response are exploited to adaptively identify signal subspaces. The performance of the algorithm is verified both by simulated and real data. The results show its improved performance over the reference algorithms, e.g., a singular-value-decomposition-based algorithm. The adaptive-MSSA-based RMD algorithm has great promise not only in practical use but also for future research of UWB-radar-based human being remote sensing.

Beschreibung: Land–sea contamination observed in Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) brightness temperature images is found to have two main contributions: the floor error inherent of image reconstruction and a multiplicative error either in the antenna temperature or in the visibility samples measured by the correlator. The origin of this last one is traced down to SMOS calibration parameters to yield a simple correction scheme, which is validated against several geophysical scenarios. Autoconsistency rules in interferometric synthesis together with redundant and complementary calibration procedures provide a robust SMOS calibration scheme.

Beschreibung: This letter proposes a novel algorithm, which is based on the generalized method of moments (GMM), for the estimation and correction of phase errors induced in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The GMM algorithm is used to replace the original phase-estimation kernel in the basic structure of the phase-gradient-autofocus algorithm. Since this novel algorithm does not require the observed signal to be a certain distribution model, it is able to estimate arbitrary phase errors. The GMM algorithm has the ability of estimating range-dependent phase errors, which makes it an efficient estimator. As a result, higher accuracy of the estimated phase errors and a better focused image can be achieved. Excellent results have been obtained in autofocusing and imaging experiments on real SAR data.

Beschreibung: Strong clutter reflections of terrain and marine surfaces obscure the contrast between the target-of-interest and clutter (terrain and marine surface reflections) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and consequently hinder the efficiency of image interpretation and analysis. To overcome this problem, this letter proposes an efficient clutter suppression method in SAR images, which is named shedding irrelevant patterns (SIP). The essence is to construct a regression function that can suppress clutter and preserve the target patterns concurrently. We assume that the clutter is irrelevant to the target-of-interest and distinguishable in patterns in terms of image-pixel distribution and intensity (spatial information). Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method in both clutter suppression and target pattern preservation.

Beschreibung: A concern in hyperspectral image classification is the high number of required training samples. When traditional classifiers are applied, feature reduction (FR) techniques are the most common approaches to deal with this problem. Subspace-based classifiers, which are developed based on high-dimensional space characteristics, are another way to handle the high dimension of hyperspectral images. In this letter, a novel subspace-based classification approach is proposed and compared with basic and improved subspace-based classifiers. The proposed classifier is also compared with traditional classifiers that are accompanied by an FR technique and the well-known support vector machine classifier. Experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed method, especially when a limited number of training samples are available. Furthermore, the proposed method has a very high level of automation and simplicity, as it has no parameters to be set.

An important procedure in DS interferometry is the phase triangulation (PT). This letter introduces two modified PT algorithms (i.e., equal-weighted PT and coherence-weighted PT) and analyzes the mathematical relations between different published PT methods (i.e., the maximum-likelihood phase estimator, least squares estimator, and eigendecomposition-based phase estimators). The analysis shows that the above five PT methods share very similar mathematical forms with different weight values in the estimation procedure.

Beschreibung: Sparse representation-based classifier and its variants have been widely adopted for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification recently. However, sparse representation is unstable so that similar features might obtain significantly different sparse codes. Despite the instability, we find that the sparse codes follow a class-dependent distribution under the structured dictionary consisting of training samples from all classes. Based on this observation, a novel discriminative feature, sparse code histogram (SCH), is developed for HSI classification. By counting the SCH of each sample from the sparse codes of its spatial neighbors, we can statistically obtain the distribution pattern of sparse codes of the class to which the sample belongs, and then treat the SCH as a new feature for classification. To reduce the possible outliers among the neighbors, a shape-adaptive neighborhood extractor is also employed to enhance the stability of the histogram feature. Experimental results demonstrate that SCH enjoys a strong discriminative power, which can achieve notably better performance than several state-of-the-art methods for HSI classification with limited training samples.

Beschreibung: Several detection statistics have been proposed for detecting fine ground disturbances between two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, such as vehicle tracks. The standard method involves estimating a local correlation coefficient between images. Other methods have been proposed using various statistical hypothesis tests. One of these alternative methods is a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), which compares a full-correlation image model to a no-correlation image model. In this letter, we expand the GLRT to polarimetric SAR data and derive the appropriate GLRT detection statistics. Additionally, we explore relaxing the equal variance/equal polarimetric covariance assumptions used in previous results and find improved performance on macroscopic scene changes.

Beschreibung: For downward-looking linear array 3-D synthetic aperture radar, the resolution in cross-track direction is much lower than the ones in range and azimuth. Hence, superresolution reconstruction algorithms are desired. Since the cross-track signal to be reconstructed is sparse in the object domain, compressive sensing algorithm has been used. However, the imaging processing on the 3-D scene brings large computational loads, which renders challenges in both data acquisition and processing. To cover this shortage, truncated singular value decomposition is utilized to reconstruct a reduced-redundancy spatial measurement matrix. The proposed algorithm provides advantages in terms of computational time while maintaining the quality of the scene reconstructions. Moreover, our results on uniform linear array are generally applicable to sparse nonuniform linear array. Superresolution properties and reconstruction accuracies are demonstrated using simulations under the noise and clutter scenarios.

Beschreibung: This letter proposes a signal processing method of passive bistatic radar (PBR) exploiting an uncooperative radar as an illuminator. Compared with other opportunity illuminators, the transmitting signal of a radar usually has a better ambiguity function, which leads to a higher range resolution. Two channels are needed in PBR system. The reference channel is used to estimate radar signal parameters and reconstruct directly propagated signal. The surveillance channel is used to receive scattered wave. An array antenna and a simultaneous multibeam algorithm are necessary in the surveillance channel due to the flexible beam scanning of the uncooperative radar. The procedure of the proposed method is explained in detail, which is then followed by a field experiment. Preliminary results from the field experiment show that the proposed method can be applied to target angle and bistatic range measurement successfully.

Beschreibung: In order to achieve 3-D imaging with an airborne down-looking linear-array synthetic aperture radar (LASAR), a uniform virtual antenna array may be obtained by aperture synthesis of the cross-track sparse multiple-input–multiple-output array. However, the actual 3-D imaging quality is unavoidably degraded by errors in the virtual element position. In this letter, we investigate the effects of these errors on the forms and the degrees of image quality degradation by decomposing the error-related stochastic processes via an orthogonal transform based on discrete Legendre polynomials. It should be noted that these analyses are helpful for designing a LASAR system and providing a reference for specifying the requisite precision of measurement devices and calibration methods. Finally, we briefly consider the use of calibration methods to eliminate the effects of errors.

These approaches typically rely on a smoothness assumption such that examples that are similar in input space should also be similar in label space. In many domains, such as remotely sensed hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, the data violate this assumption. In response, we propose a general method by which a neighborhood graph used in SSL is learned using binary classifiers that are trained to predict whether a pair of pixels shares the same label. Working within the framework of semisupervised neural networks (SSNNs), we show that our approach improves on the performance of the SSNN on two HSI data sets.

Beschreibung: In this letter, new models for the spatial correlation of sea clutter texture and intensity are proposed as improved versions of current power law models or exponential decay model. The models for texture have three unknown parameters, and thus can be called triparametric models. The structure of the models is a weighted sum of two components, which can describe the decaying process of the correlation coefficient with spatial lags, as well as the periodic behavior due to the existence of transient coherent structures in sea clutter. Unknown parameters are optimized by the nonlinear least square fit method. Models for sea clutter intensity can be obtained through a linear transform for uncorrelated speckle based on the compound-Gaussian representation of sea clutter. The proposed models are validated and compared with current models using S- and C-band measured sea clutter data. Analysis results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed models in that they can describe the behavior of spatial correlation coefficients with higher accuracy.

Beschreibung: Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has become a popular tool for acquiring source data points which can be used to construct digital elevation models (DEMs) for a wide number of applications. A TLS point cloud often has a very fine spatial resolution, which can represent well the spatial variation of a terrain surface. However, the uncertainty in DEMs created from this relatively new type of source data is not well understood, which forms the focus of this letter. TLS survey data representing four terrain surfaces of different characteristics were used to explore the effects of surface complexity and typical TLS data density (in terms of data point spacing) on DEM accuracy. The spatial variation in TLS data can be decomposed into parts corresponding to the signal of spatial variation (of terrain surfaces) and noise due to measurement error. We found a linear relation between the DEM error and the typical TLS data spacings considered (30–100 mm) which arises as a function of the interpolation error, and a constant contribution from the propagated data noise. This letter quantifies these components for each of the four surfaces considered and shows that, for the interpolation method considered here, higher density sampling would not be beneficial.

Beschreibung: A novel way to estimate the live fuel moisture content (LFMC) was explored from the ratio of canopy water content (CWC) and foliage dry biomass (FDB). The CWC was estimated using the PROSAIL (PROSPECT + SAIL) radiative transfer model from the Landsat 8 product. A weak constraint 4-D variational data assimilation method was employed to assimilate the temporally estimated leaf area index into a soil-water-atmosphere-plant (SWAP) model for optimizing the model control variables. Then, the SWAP model was reinitialized with this optimum set of control variables, and better prediction of FDB was obtained. Results showed that a high accuracy level was achieved for the estimated CWC ( $R^{2}=0.91$ , $mbox{RMSE}=84.74 mbox{g/m}^2$ ) and FDB ( $R^2=0.88$ , $mbox{RMSE}=48.54 mbox{g/m} ^2$ ) when compared with in situ measured values. However, the accuracy level of estimated LFMC was poor ( $R^2=0.59$ , $mbox{RMSE} =30.85%$ ) . Further analyses find that the estimated LFMC is reliable for low LFMC but challenged for high LFMC, which indicates that the presented method still makes sense to the assessment of wildfire risk since the wildfire generally occurs when the vegetation is in low LFMC condition.

Beschreibung: In this letter, we present the use of experimental human micro-Doppler signature data gathered by a multistatic radar system to discriminate between unarmed and potentially armed personnel walking along different trajectories. Different ways of extracting suitable features from the spectrograms of the micro-Doppler signatures are discussed, particularly empirical features such as Doppler bandwidth, periodicity, and others, and features extracted from singular value decomposition (SVD) vectors. High classification accuracy of armed versus unarmed personnel (between 90% and 97% depending on the walking trajectory of the people) can be achieved with a single SVD-based feature, in comparison with using four empirical features. The impact on classification performance of different aspect angles and the benefit of combining multistatic information is also evaluated in this letter.

Beschreibung: Automatic urban area detection in remote sensing images is an important application in the field of earth observation. Most of the existing methods employ feature classifiers and thereby contain a data training process. Moreover, some methods cannot detect urban areas in complex scenes accurately. This letter proposes an automatic urban area detection method that uses multiple features that have different resolutions. First, a downsampled low-resolution image is used to segment the candidate area. After the corner points of the urban area are extracted, a weighted Gaussian voting matrix technique is employed to integrate the corner points into the candidate area. Then, the edge features and homogeneous region are extracted by using the original high-resolution image. Using these results as the input, the processes of guided filtering and contrast enhancement can finally detect accurately the urban areas. This method combines multiple features, such as corner, edge, and regional characteristics, to detect the urban areas. The experimental results show that the proposed method has better detection accuracy for urban areas than the existing algorithms.

Beschreibung: In marine sciences, time series are often nonlinear and nonstationary. Adequate and specific methods are needed to analyze such series. In this letter, an application of the empirical mode decomposition method (EMD) associated to the Hilbert spectral analysis (HSA) is presented. Furthermore, EMD-based time-dependent intrinsic correlation (TDIC) analysis is applied to consider the correlation between two nonstationary time series. Four temperature time series obtained from automatic measurements in nearshore waters of the Réunion island are considered, recorded every 10 min from July 2011 to January 2012. The application of the EMD on these series and the estimation of their power spectra using the HSA are illustrated. The authors identify low-frequency tidal waves and display the pattern of correlations at different scales and different locations. By TDIC analysis, it was concluded that the high-frequency modes have small correlation, whereas the trends are perfectly correlated.

Beschreibung: Detecting vehicles in aerial images provides important information for traffic management and urban planning. Detecting the cars in the images is challenging due to the relatively small size of the target objects and the complex background in man-made areas. It is particularly challenging if the goal is near-real-time detection, i.e., within few seconds, on large images without any additional information, e.g., road database and accurate target size. We present a method that can detect the vehicles on a 21-MPixel original frame image without accurate scale information within seconds on a laptop single threaded. In addition to the bounding box of the vehicles, we extract also orientation and type (car/truck) information. First, we apply a fast binary detector using integral channel features in a soft-cascade structure. In the next step, we apply a multiclass classifier on the output of the binary detector, which gives the orientation and type of the vehicles. We evaluate our method on a challenging data set of original aerial images over Munich and a data set captured from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Beschreibung: We compare five slope correction methods developed by Walter et al. , Montes et al. , Schleppi et al. , España et al. , and Gonsamo et al. (referred to as WAL, MON, SCH, ESP, and GON, respectively) using artificial fisheye pictures simulated by graphics software and a lookup table (LUT) retrieval method. The LUT is built by simulating the directional gap fraction as a function of leaf area index (LAI) and average leaf inclination angle (ALIA) using the Poisson law. LAI and ALIA estimates correspond to the case of the LUT that provides the lowest root-mean-square error between the observed gap fractions after slope correction and the simulated ones. Three LAI values (1.5, 3.5, and 5.5), four ALIA values (26.8°, 45°, 57.5°, and 63.2°), and three slope angles (0°, 20°, and 50°) constituted 36 samples of random scenes. ESP is recommended because its results are accurate and independent on the leaf angle distribution (LAD), while GON only performs well for spherical LAD. The three other methods present less good performances with underestimation or overestimation of LAI and/or ALIA depending on the LAD, and the recommended order for them is MON, SCH, and WAL.

Beschreibung: In this letter, an improved phase correlation (PC) method based on 2-D plane fitting and the maximum kernel density estimator (MKDE) is proposed, which combines the idea of Stone's method and robust estimator MKDE. The proposed PC method first utilizes a vector filter to minimize the noise errors of the phase angle matrix and then unwraps the filtered phase angle matrix by the use of the minimum cost network flow unwrapping algorithm. Afterward, the unwrapped phase angle matrix is robustly fitted via MKDE, and the slope coefficients of the 2-D plane indicate the subpixel shifts between images. The experiments revealed that the improved method can effectively avoid the impact of outliers on the phase angle matrix during the plane fitting and is robust to aliasing and noise. The matching accuracy can reach 1/50th of a pixel using simulated data. The real image sequence tracking experiment was also undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PC method with a registration accuracy of root-mean-square error better than 0.1 pixels.

Beschreibung: Accurately mapping forest carbon density by combining sample plots and remotely sensed images has become popular because this method provides spatially explicit estimates. However, mixed pixels often impede the improvement of the estimation. In this letter, regression modeling and spectral unmixing analysis were integrated to improve the estimation of forest carbon density for the You County of Hunan, China, using Landsat Thematic Mapper images. Linear spectral unmixing with and without a constraint (LSUWC and LSUWOC) and nonlinear spectral unmixing (NSU) were compared to derive the fractions of five endmembers, particularly forests. Stepwise regression, logistic regression, and polynomial regression (PR) with and without the forest fraction used as an independent variable and the product of the forest fraction image and the map from the best model without the forest fraction were compared. The models were developed using 56 sample plots, and their results were validated using 26 test plots. The decomposition of mixed pixels was assessed using higher spatial resolution SPOT images and a corresponding land cover map. The results showed that 1) LSUWC more accurately estimated the endmember fractions than LSUWOC and NSU, 2) PR had the greatest estimation accuracy of forest carbon, and 3) combining regression modeling and spectral unmixing increased the estimation accuracy by 31%–39%, and introducing the forest fraction into the regressions performed better than the product of forest fraction image and the results from PR without the fraction. This implied that the integrations provided great potential in reducing the impacts of mixed pixels in mapping forest carbon.

Beschreibung: This letter proposes a multiresolution technique to address the high computational cost in remote sensing image registration. The scale-invariant feature transform is applied to detect keypoints and descriptors, and then, global information combined with descriptors is utilized to establish keypoint mappings. Keypoints are first classified according to their octaves. Then, in the lowest resolution, the keypoints of the largest octave are mapped with descriptors and the global information, giving an initial affine transformation $T_0$ . In the next octave, the keypoints of the second largest octave are mapped by employing $T_0$ to narrow the space of matching keypoints. By this means, the process of establishing keypoint correspondences is conducted from one resolution (octave) to the next as the obtained transformation gets finer until we get to the highest resolution. Due to the high computational expense of computing global information, the proposed technique is important for aligning large-size remote sensing imagery. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a comparable registration accuracy but with a less computational cost than directly building keypoint mappings on images of large size.

Beschreibung: Gold nanorods (GNRs) with surface plasmon resonance peak at 1063.8 nm were fabricated and experimentally exploited as the single and combined saturable absorber (SA) in a $Q$ -switched Nd:YAG laser for the first time. In the situation using GNRs as a single SA, the maximum pulse energy of 19 $muhbox{J} $ was achieved at a pulse repetition rate of 20 kHz. However, due to the small effective modulation depth of the GNRs, microsecond pulses were generated in such a GNRs-based passively $Q$ -switched laser. A novel configuration using GNRs as a combined SA in an acoustooptic $Q$ -switched Nd:YAG laser was proposed. The small nonlinear loss modulation induced by the GNRs played a distinctive role in flexibly manipulating the nanosecond pulse waveforms. Our study demonstrated the feasibility of generating high-energy pulses by singly using GNRs-based SA in all solid-state lasers. Meanwhile, a new application mode incorporating GNRs as a combined SA was studied, providing an alternative method to take advantage of the nanomaterial-based SA with a relatively small modulation depth.

Beschreibung: In this letter, we present an efficient parallel implementation of composite kernels in support vector machines (SVMs) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. Our implementation makes effective use of commodity graphics processing units (GPUs). Specifically, we port the calculation of composite kernels to GPUs, perform intensive computations based on NVidia's compute unified device architecture, and execute the rest of the operations related with control and small data calculations in the CPU. Our experimental results, conducted using real hyperspectral data sets and NVidia GPU platforms, indicate significant improvements in terms of computational effectiveness, achieving near-real-time performance of spatial–spectral HSI classification for the first time in the literature.

Beschreibung: Compared with airborne laser scanning, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) offers ground-based point cloud data of trees and provides greater potential to accurately estimate tree and stand parameters. However, there is a lack of effective methods to accurately identify locations of individual trees from TLS point cloud data. It is also unknown whether the estimation accuracy of the parameters, including tree height (H), diameter at breast height (DBH), and so on, using TLS can meet the requirement of forest management and planning. In this letter, a novel method to effectively process point cloud data and further determine the locations of individual trees in a stand based on the central coordinates of point cloud data on a defined grid according to the largest DBH was developed. Moreover, a point-cloud-data-based convex hull algorithm and the cylinder method were, respectively, used to estimate DBH and H of individual trees. This study was conducted in a pure Chinese fir plantation of 45 trees located in Huang-Feng-Qiao forest farm, You County of Hunan, China. The comparison of the estimated and observed values showed that the obtained tree locations had errors of less than 20 cm, and the relative root mean square errors for the estimates of both DBH and H were less than 5%. This implies that TLS is very promising for the retrieval of tree and stand parameters in forest stands. For the applications of these methods to mixed forests with a structure of multilayer canopies, further examination is needed.

Beschreibung: Commercial, industrial, and military aerospace designs are increasingly deploying MEMS micro inertial measurement unit (MIMU) for motion control, automation, and positioning applications, such as the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), robot, and smart phone. On the one hand, MIMU has the merit of low cost, small size, low-power consumption, and high shock resistance, but on the other hand, low-cost MIMU is affected by systematic error caused by the instability of the drift, scaling factors, and axes misalignment, which may lead to large errors in the position and attitude’s determination from time to time. That means calibration before use is an effective way to improve the practical precision of MIMU. However, many customers have no precise turntable to calibrate the MIMU before they use it. To address these problems, this paper presents an easy self-calibration method to implement calibration of the MIMU on a common table only with an inclined surface, no precise turntable is needed. The calibration method is based on the following principles. First, the module of the output vector of the orthogonal configured three-axis accelerometers is equal to unit gravity. Second, when IMU rotates to a known gesture with a stable axis, the angles can be calculated through integration. Third, when the accelerometers’ parameters are calculated, it can act as a level datum. Furthermore, the accelerometers on the inclined surface are used to determine the rotating heading datum. Finally, after a series static positions test and rotating test, the parameters can be extracted and estimated. To demonstrate the success and the convenience of the proposed method, comparison experiments with the precision turntable have been made on an ADI’s MIMU. The calibration results show that the accuracy and precision of this method is quite equivalent with the turntable-based calibration, and the scale factors error with an order of magnitude always equal or less than $10^{-5}$ . The observed static and dynamic yaw maximum angular error in a certain period is <0.8°, the pitch maximum angular error is <0.5°, and the roll maximum angular error is <0.3°.

Beschreibung: Time–frequency packing (TFP) transmission provides the highest achievable spectral efficiency with a constrained symbol alphabet and detector complexity. In this paper, the application of the TFP technique to fiber-optic systems is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. The main theoretical aspects, design guidelines, and implementation issues are discussed, focusing on those aspects which are peculiar to TFP systems. In particular, adaptive compensation of propagation impairments, matched filtering, and maximum a posteriori probability detection are obtained by a combination of a two-dimensional equalizer and four eight-state parallel Bahl–Cocke–Jelinek–Raviv (BCJR) detectors. A novel algorithm that ensures adaptive equalization, channel estimation, and a proper distribution of tasks between the equalizer and BCJR detectors is proposed. A set of irregular low-density parity-check codes with different rates is designed to operate at low error rates and approach the spectral efficiency limit achievable by TFP at different signal-to-noise ratios. An experimental demonstration of the designed system is finally provided with five dual-polarization QPSK-modulated optical carriers, densely packed in a 100-GHz bandwidth, employing a recirculating loop to test the performance of the system at different transmission distances.

Beschreibung: We investigated nonlinear optical characteristics of Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) films and experimentally demonstrated their high potential for application as nonlinear saturable absorbers in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. Side polished fiber (SPF) was fabricated and WS 2 film was overlaid to provide an efficient evanescent field interaction. The WS 2 film was prepared using two methods: liquid phase exfoliation to form few-layer nano-sheets, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow uniform multilayer WS 2 on a SiO 2 substrate. Two SPF saturable absorbers were prepared by either spin coating WS 2 solution or lifting off the multilayer CVD WS 2 on SPF. An all-fiber ring cavity was built and the WS 2 film overlaid on SPF was employed as a mode locker along with Er-doped fiber as a gain medium. Using the spin-coated WS 2 SPF, stable soliton-like pulses were generated with a spectral width of 5.6 nm and 467 fs pulse duration. The fiber laser cavity containing CVD WS2 SPF generated a transform-limited soliton pulse train with a spectral width of 8.23 nm and a pulse duration of 332 fs. Our study confirmed a high potential of WS 2 film as a novel 2-D nonlinear optical material for laser applications.

Beschreibung: We propose and experimentally demonstrate an on-chip all-optical differential-equation solver capable of solving second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) characterizing continuous-time linear time-invariant systems. The photonic device is implemented by a self-coupled microresonator on a silicon-on-insulator platform with mutual coupling between the cavity modes. Owing to the mutual mode coupling within the same resonant cavity, the resonance wavelengths induced by different cavity modes are self-aligned, thus avoiding precise wavelength alignment and unequal thermal wavelength drifts as in the case of cascaded resonators. By changing the mutual mode coupling strength, the proposed device can be used to solve second-order ODEs with tunable coefficients. System demonstration using the fabricated device is carried out for 10-Gb/s optical Gaussian and super-Gaussian input pulses. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions of the solutions, which verify the feasibility of the fabricated device as a tunable second-order photonic ODE solver.

Beschreibung: The iterative demodulation and decoding algorithm introduced in 2005 by Colavolpe, Barbieri, and Caire to cope with channels affected by phase noise needs pilot symbols to bootstrap. However, pilot symbols reduce the spectral efficiency of the system and, consequently, system's throughput. The aim of this paper is to show that trellis-based demodulation can be used to bootstrap the iterative process without the need of pilot symbols. Also, the complexity issue of trellis-based demodulation is addressed in this paper. The result is that the performance of iterative demodulation and decoding after the iterations is virtually unaffected by complexity reduction, provided that the reduced-complexity demodulator guarantees cycle-slip-free operation. From the numerical results presented in this paper, we show that cycle-slip-free operation can be achieved with substantial complexity reduction also for phase noise associated with linewidths of practical interest.

Beschreibung: This work proposes a novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biochemical sensor featuring high sensitivity and a high resolution. The sensor was divided into two subcomponents according to their distinct functions; namely, single-mode fiber and metal array. Single-mode fibers located on the left and right sides of the sensors function as the input and output for optical fiber signals. A metal array comprising an arrangement of cylindrical nanometal particles served as the detection area of the sensor. To effectively reduce the memory capacity and calculation time, two innovative techniques (i.e., object meshing and boundary meshing) were integrated with the finite element method. With the area of the triangular elements used as a basis, the object boundary, small object, medium object, and large objects were meshed at a ratio of 1:8:160:1600. The improved numerical simulation methods and six design procedures were adopted to develop and analyze the proposed LSPR biochemical sensor. The results show that the novel LSPR biochemical sensor outperformed two current high-performance biochemical sensors and provided additional advantages such as short length (approximately 430 μm), high resolution (approximately –120 dB), and high sensitivity (approximately 127 604 nm/RIU).

Beschreibung: We propose an ultra-broadband super light absorber by integrating different-sized tapered hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) waveguides, each of which has a different and wide absorption band due to broadband slow-light response, into a unit cell. We numerically demonstrate that such an absorber is superior to a single-sized HMM absorber in terms of absorption bandwidth, while maintaining a comparable absorption efficiency. A three different-sized HMM absorber presents the capability of working with an ultra-wide frequency band ranging from 1 to 30 THz, which is much larger than previously proposed absorbers working in the same spectral region. Such a design shows great promise for a broad range of applications such as thermal emitters, photovoltaics, optical-chemical energy harvesting, and stealth technology, where ultra-wideband absorption is in very high demand.

Beschreibung: This paper proposes a ring-based integrated wireless optical network architecture and an associated protocol that involves Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) and long term evolution (LTE) wireless network. The architecture along with the proposed protocol is instrumental toward the reduction of handover delay. The proposed ring-based EPON architecture facilitates the implementation of the X2 interface for LTE network by enabling the optical network units of the EPON backhaul to directly communicate with each other. The work further discusses about an open access network architecture where a single EPON can be used by multiple mobile service providers without compromising information security. Extensive simulations have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed network. An analytical model has been introduced to calculate the queuing delay experienced by the X2 interface. The model has been validated with the simulations results.

Beschreibung: High spectrum efficiency and fast restoration speed are highly desired for survivable elastic optical networks (EONs). In this paper, we take the advantages of failure-independent path-protecting preconfigured cycles (FIPP p -cycles) and investigate how to realize spectrum efficient resilience design with them. We first study the problem of offline service provisioning with FIPP p -cycles. We formulate an integer linear programming model and prove that the problem is $mathcal{NP}$ hard. Then, several time-efficient heuristics are designed for FIPP p -cycle formulation and related routing, modulation format, and spectrum assignment. Extensive simulations on offline provisioning verify that the heuristics can obtain near-optimal solutions. Next, we consider online service provisioning with FIPP p -cycles in dynamic EONs. In order to overcome the decrease of protection efficiency during dynamic network operation, we propose a p -cycle reconfiguration scheme to reoptimize protection structures on-the-fly. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can improve spectrum efficiency and reduce bandwidth blocking probability simultaneously.

Beschreibung: Photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glasses are the class of polyfunctional materials that combine the properties of several monofunctional materials such as photo-refractive, laser, luminescent, and plasmonic ones. Based on PTR glasses, various diffractive holographic elements and photonic devices were developed in both the volume and fiber versions. In this paper, the fabrication of optical planar waveguides on PTR glass by low-temperature ion exchange is reported for the first time. Planar waveguides were fabricated through substituting the sodium ions in glass by silver, potassium, rubidium, and cesium ones from the nitrate melts. The silver waveguides were shown to have the largest depth (27 μm) and reveal no birefringence. For the silver waveguides, an increase in the refractive index is caused by differences in the polarizabilities of cations exchanged. The maximum increment of the refractive index was observed in the cesium waveguides (0.0512). An increase in the refractive index and also appearing the birefringence in potassium, rubidium, and cesium waveguides are found to be due to the compressive mechanical stresses and their relaxation. The potentialities of the ion exchange technology for fabricating, in PTR glasses, planar gradient waveguides with low losses (0.5 dB/cm) are demonstrated, the potentialities extending the application field of PTR glasses in photonics.

Beschreibung: In this letter, a novel algorithm for attitude measurement based on a 3-D electromagnetic model (3-D em-model) is proposed. The 3-D em-model is established offline based on the geometric structure of the target, and it can be used to predict the scattering features at different target attitudes. In order to measure the attitude of the air target, we design a bistatic step frequency radar system. The directions of the two radars' lines of sight (LOSs) relative to the target are acquired by matching the high-resolution range profiles (HRRPs) from the target echoes to the HRRPs generated from the 3-D em-model. Since the directions of two radars' LOSs relative to the Earth are already known, the absolute attitude of the target can be acquired. The innovative contributions of this letter are as follows: 1) A comprehensive theoretical analysis of air target attitude measurement based on its own 3-D em-model is proposed; 2) the method can be applied to different kinds of air targets such as aircraft, satellite, missile, etc.; 3) the proposed attitude measurement method does not require target motion model in advance; and 4) the proposed algorithm can be applied to any kind of step frequency waveforms. Experiments using both data predicted by a high-frequency electromagnetic code and data measured in the chamber verify the validity of the method.

Beschreibung: The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) missions provide Level-1 brightness temperature (Tb) observations that are used for global soil moisture estimation. However, the nature of these Tb data differs: the SMOS Tb observations contain atmospheric and select reflected extraterrestrial (“Sky”) radiation, whereas the SMAP Tb data are corrected for these contributions, using auxiliary near-surface information. Furthermore, the SMOS Tb observations are multiangular, whereas the SMAP Tb is measured at 40° incidence angle only. This letter discusses how SMOS Tb, SMAP Tb, and radiative transfer modeling components can be aligned in order to enable a seamless exchange of SMOS and SMAP Tb data in soil moisture retrieval and assimilation systems. The aggregated contribution of the atmospheric and reflected Sky radiation is, on average, about 1 K for horizontally polarized Tb and 0.5 K for vertically polarized Tb at 40° incidence angle, but local and short-term values regularly exceed 5 K.

Beschreibung: A multi-sensor addressing method for fiber Bragg grating aided fiber loop ringdown (FBG-FLRD) sensor array is proposed. It is capable of simultaneous measurement of temperature and force. Light from a wavelength-swept fiber laser (WSFL) is modulated into pulsed light to illuminate FBG-FLRD sensor array. Based on the time sequence of pulsed lights reflected by fiber Bragg grating array, each FBG-FLRD sensor can be distinguished. The time interval between the trigger signal of the WSFL and the pulsed light reflected by FBG offers temperature variation information. By measuring the ringdown time of each FBG-FLRD, the loss of fiber ring induced by temperature and force can be obtained. And then simultaneous measurement can be implemented in real time. To prove the validity of the proposed system, a six elements array is experimentally validated with interrogation frequency of 27.5 Hz.

Beschreibung: Declines in Ogallala aquifer levels used for irrigation has prompted research to identify methods for optimizing water use efficiency (WUE) of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L). In this experiment, conducted at Lubbock, TX, USA in 2014, our objective was to test two canopy temperature based stress indices, each at two different irrigation trigger set points: the Stress Time (ST) method with irrigation triggers set at 5.5 (ST_5.5) and 8.5 h (ST_8.5) and the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) method with irrigation triggers set at 0.3 (CWSI_0.3) and 0.6 (CWSI_0.6). When these irrigation triggers were exceeded on a given day, the crop was deficit irrigated with 5 mm of water via subsurface drip tape. Also included in the experimental design were a well-watered (WW) control irrigated at 110% of potential evapotranspiration and a dry land (DL) treatment that relied on rainfall only. Seasonal crop water use ranged from 353 to 625 mm across these six treatments. As expected, cotton lint yield increased with increasing crop water use but lint yield WUE displayed asignificant (p ≤ 0.05) peak near 3.6 to 3.7 kg ha−1 mm−1 for the ST_5.5 and CWSI_0.3 treatments, respectively. Our results suggest that WUE may be optimized in cotton with less water than that needed for maximum lint yield.

Beschreibung: The Saudi Arabia (SA) climate varies greatly, depending on the geography and the season. According to K ppen and Geiger, the climates of SA is “desert climate”. The analysis of the seasonal rainfall detects that spring and winter seasons have the highestrainfall incidence, respectively. Through the summer, small quantities of precipitation are observed, while autumn received more precipitation more than summer season considering the total annual rainfall. In all seasons, the SW area receives rainfall, with a maximum in spring, whereas in the summer season, the NE and NW areas receive very little quantities of precipitation. The Rub Al-Khali (the SE region) is almost totally dry. The maximum amount of annual rainfall does not always happen at the highest elevation. Therefore, the elevation is not the only factor in rainfall distribution.A great inter-annual change in the rainfall over the SA for the period (1978–2009) is observed. In addition, in the same period, a linear decreasing trend is found in the observed rainfall, whilst in the recent past (1994–2009) a statistically significant negative trend is observed. In the Southern part of the Arabian Peninsula (AP) and along the coast of the Red Sea, it is interesting to note that rainfall increased, whilst it decreased over most areas of SA during the 2000–2009 decade, compared to 1980–1989.Statistical and numerical models are used to predict rainfall over Saudi Arabia (SA). The statistical models based on stochastic models of ARIMA and numerical models based on Providing Regional Climates for Impact Studies of Hadley Centre (PRECIS). Climate and its qualitative character and quantified range of possible future changes are investigated. The annual total rainfall decreases in most regions of the SA and only increases in the south. The summertime precipitation will be the highest between other seasons over the southern, the southwestern provinces and Asir mountains, while the wintertime rainfall will remain the lowest. The climate in the SA is instructed by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other circulations such as centers of high and low pressure, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and SOI. Strength and oscillation of subtropical jet stream play a big role in pulling hot, dry air masses of SA.
