    Description: In the current socio-cultural scenario, the implementation of the university reform aimed at boosting third-level education calls for meditation within the discipline of Architectural Technology (ICAR 12). This review must address the research topics and academic profiles of PhD courses in the Technological Area, also in terms of fostering actions consistent with European strategic lines for the promotion of a knowledge society. Research, innovation, creativity and design are the keywords of this scenario that PhD students and lecturers must bear in mind when considering three fields of study: environmental design and landscape, building production and construction and works and services strategic for the community. This book "Research among innovation, creativity and design" develops the topics addressed during the VII OSDOTTA workshop (the network of PhD courses in the field of Architectural Technology) held at the Mantua campus of Milan Polytechnic on 15th-16th-17th September 2011.

    Description: People with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a particular sensory sensitivity, causing their surrounding environment to affect the quality of life significantly. It is called a “spectrum”, because there is a great variety of behaviours making it difficult to define universal and design criteria. These behaviours do however require a new dynamic and flexible approach, enabling the customization of the feedback to the project. Starting from the study of the specific needs of users, the environmental conditions and the design approaches, this research aims at providing innovative tools to support the design of “therapeutic” environments which could reduce the discomfort and stress related to the person’s enablement, in order to include them in the social community within an integrated life project, concerning “home”, applied living spaces (school, work, day centres...) and emergency conditions with respect to treatments.

    Description: What does it mean to design hospitals according to the flows while satisfying the users' needs? How do the different parts of the hospital body bind together? When can a spatial and functional relationship be rightly defined as close, adjacent or distant? How difficult is it to walk along a connection? The volume reconstructs the state of the art on the theme of people flows in hospitals, and identifies tools to support the project and management of the flow system within hospitals. It brings together validated specialist methods to achieve the objectives of airport projects. The results of research conducted with the support of funds from Florence University have been transformed into an updated handbook on the new design concepts and methods for the development of passenger terminals. Housing adaptations are one of the main tools for improving quality of life for people with severe disabilities and for their caregivers. They are also the main tool of the ADA Project, an action research that developed a strategy to tailor adaptations to the specific user needs and profiles. After an introduction to disability, accessibility and housing adaptations, the book describes the ADA Project’s goals, stages and tools. It then focuses on the main scientific outcome of the Project: the ADA Assessment Model (AdAM), an interdisciplinary tool that analyses and assesses the functional and social profile of disabled persons and their relationship with the physical environment in which they live.

    Description: The publication proposes a critical reading of the results emerging from the Seminar organised in January 2010 by the Department of Architectural and Design Technology on research tools for the architectural project. The spatial layout of buildings and urban spaces influences behaviour and the relations of the users, and in this displays the social nature of the architectural function in comparison to other spheres of design. Space Syntax (theory, methodology and techniques for the analysis of complex systems) takes this theory as the basis for its research.     Description: The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions.

    Description: Vernacular architecture represents a great resource that has considerable potential to define principles for sustainable design and contemporary architecture. This publication is the result of an overall aim to produce a valuable tool for analysis regarding vernacular heritage through different assessments, in order to define principles to consider for sustainable development. This was possible through a comprehensive reflection on the principles established and the strategies to recognise in different world contexts. The present publication was the result of an in-depth approach by 46 authors from 12 countries, concerned with the analysis and critical assessment of vernacular heritage and its sustainable perspective. The book presents 8 chapters addressing operational definitions and synopses advances, regarding the main areas of vernacular heritage contribution to sustainable architecture. It also presents 15 chapters and 53 case studies of vernacular and contemporary approaches in all the 5 continents, regarding urban, architectural, technical and constructive strategies and solutions. VERSUS, HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW: Vernacular Knowledge for Sustainable Architecture is the result of a common effort undertaken by the partners ESG | Escola Superior Gallaecia, Portugal, as Project leader; CRAterre | École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble, France; DIDA | Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy; DICAAR | Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy; and UPV | Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. This is the final outcome of VerSus, an European project developed from 2012 to 2014, in the framework of the Culture 2007-2013 programme.

    Description: La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale, the third volume in the DOTTA series, this publication documents the third edition of the Osdotta seminar co-ordinated by the Polytechnic of Milan, held in Lecco on 12-13-14 September 2007. The acronym of the Monitoring Centre of the Doctorate in Architectural Technology (Osservatorio del Dottorato in Tecnologia dell'Architettura), Osdotta was generated by the need to create a space for cultural exchange in relation to research contents and methods pertinent to technological disciplines. An experience acknowledged as a site of scientific interconnection and networked structure, it sets itself the goal of exploring the complexity of the research on multiple scales, investigating and focusing emerging issues and studying the national training scenario so as to boost the professional level of the research. The 2007 edition of the national seminar demonstrates the consolidation of an inter-site education/training experiment of an innovative character that materialises in the rendering of the results of exchange and dialogue on a theme with a wealth of faceted values: the environment, in the form of a challenge that explores the relation with technology.

    Description: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as “residual urban spaces.” A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors’ view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life.

    Description: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants’ quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. Through concrete proposals and strategies, the book offers scenarios and solutions capable of enhancing the potential of each village and, at the same time, counteracting the effects of land abandonment that so often characterise them.

    Description: The protection of the environment, the protection of ecological and natural resources, the sustainable enhancement of urban and rural spaces represent unquestionable ethical paradigms and unavoidable realities which the society of the third millennium must face. Environmental protection is accompanied by wider objectives related to the fruition of territorial contexts, under a perspective of active conservation; moreover, the intervention strategies have been modified according to the enhancement of resources and contexts, as well as the development of the specific features of the territory itself. Sustainability analysis as a tool to monitor, reinterpret, develop and enhance a territory, and in particular its natural heritage: this is the main theme of this book which reports the results of a research conducted by an interdisciplinary group sharing the Life Cycle approach. The Life Cycle approach is evolving in a methodology capable of incorporating the local as well as the global dimension, the macro and meso scale together with the product scale, the social dimension as well as the environmental and economic one. So, can such an approach be appropriate and practicable in the sustainability analysis of a territory? To this question, which is specifically directed at environmental aspects, biodiversity and environmental-spatial accessibility, the book intends to give an answer both on the theoretical level and on the practical one, with the introduction of a case study dealing with the territory hosting the Regional Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli in Tuscany. The book provides an overview of the analysis phases and of the indicators supporting the analysis and documents their application at different scales in the context of the Park.
