    Description: Variations in atmospheric 14C content complicate the conversion of conventional 14C ages BP (i.e., years before AD 1950) into real calendar ages (AD/BC) (de Vries 1958; Willis, Tauber & Münnich 1960). These variations are indirectly observed in tree rings from European and North American wood. In recent decades, measurements made on dendrochronologically dated wood have resulted in the generally accepted Stuiver and Pearson calibration curves. These curves, together with other calibration data, were published in the first Radiocarbon Calibration Issue (Stuiver & Kra 1986), and are extended in the present Calibration Issue (Stuiver, Long & Kra 1993).

    Description: Graphite is the most common type of target for 14C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). It is readily produced by catalytic reduction of CO2, but the presence of a small amount of impurities (e.g., sulfur compounds) may retard the reaction. We have tested some techniques to find a method that reduces the impurity content of CO2 produced by combustion of organic material. We found that using water during combustion reduces the average time for graphite conversion of CO2 from organic matter from 〉3 h to ca. 2 h. This is the time for graphite production from CO2 obtained by acid hydrolysis of calcite. Measurements of known-age and background samples show that this combustion method neither changes the isotopic ratios nor introduces any additional background.

    Description: Both the Pretoria and the Groningen radiocarbon laboratories performed high-precision analyses on 1–4 annual tree-ring samples made available by Bernd Becker from his South German oak dendrochronological series (Vogel et al. 1986; de Jong, Becker & Mook 1986). The Pretoria measurements were extended to overlap the Groningen set, and now cover the range from 1930 to 3350 BC (Vogel et al. 1993). The tree-ring dating of the Groningen samples has been adjusted and now ranges from 3200 to 3900 BC (de Jong, Mook & Becker 1989). Taken together, the data provide a calibration curve over two millennia, which is especially suitable for short-lived samples. The curve is shown in Figures 1A–D.

    Description: Groundwater samples were collected from several different depths in Illinois glacial deposits at a site in east-central Illinois. Dissolved gases were extracted from many of the water samples, measured volumetrically, and analyze by gas chromatography. The DIC was precipitated as barium carbonate and analyzed for both δ13C and 14C. Due to the formation of microbial CH4, some of the DIC had unusually heavy δ13C values of −3 to −1‰. The standard groundwate 14C-age correction models were developed to account for carbonate dissolution as the primary carbon input beneath the soil zone. If the heavy δ13C values observed in this study are used in readily available groundwater dating models without accounting for the effect of microbial methane formation, many of the resultant calculated ages are negaitive (future ages) mathematically unsolvable. Isotopic and analytical result show a positive correlation (r2 = 0.90) between the δ13C of the DIC and the concentration of methane in the groundwater. With this correlation, we were able to correct the δ13C values of the DIC which were altered due to microbial CH4 formation. This adjustment of δ13C values, along with estimation of dead carbon input from the redox processes, allowed us to calculate 14C ages using standard groundwater age correction models.

    Description: Measurements of the stable isotope ratio 13C/12C, relative to PDB, were made for fractionation correction purposes on all oak samples used in the Irish oak 14C calibration curve. Stable isotope data have not been published previously. We have collated the stable isotope data from the calibration work, carried out some further measurements to investigate anomalies in the original results, and generated tables of data that include site and tree information pertaining to both stable isotopes and source material for 14C calibration measurements. The data suggest that land-grown trees tend to be isotopically lighter than bog-grown wood, and that the Irish trees used in the calibration exercise tend to be isotopically heavier than those from Scotland and England. Preliminary analysis of the data is given.

    Description: We have studied the isotopic composition of recently precipitated travertines to determine the initial 14C activity of ancient travertine deposits. We found that the 14C activity of recent travertines of northeastern Spain was a function of the distance from the spring, resulting in variations in the initial 14C activity of the ancient travertine formations. We calculated the ancient travertine radiocarbon ages by using the ratio between the 14C activity of recent travertines and that of present atmospheric CO2 as the initial 14C activity.
