Seine Analyse zeigt, dass »Glücksspielsucht« einerseits als medizinischer Sachverhalt präsentiert wird, andererseits aber auf moralischen Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen beruht. Das Problemmuster »Glücksspielsucht« wird dabei für unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Interessen instrumentalisiert und legitimiert darüber hinaus ein neues Kontrollregime.

However, strong repression of religion might lead to radicalization. Kathrin Lenz-Raymann tests this hypothesis with an agent-based computer simulation and enriches her study with interviews with international experts, leaders of political Islam and representatives of folk Islam. She concludes that ensuring religious rights is essential for national security.

In einem Vergleich der entwicklungspolitischen Praxis der USA und Deutschlands arbeitet diese Studie die Unterschiedlichkeiten der Konzepte und institutionellen Ausrichtungen heraus und analysiert deren Implementierung in Sri Lanka.

Die Konfrontation mit Macht- und Herrschaftsverhältnissen im privaten Alltag, in Behörden und in der Arbeitswelt, so die These, erfahren Subalterne als Ohnmacht. Politisches Engagement erscheint ihnen infolgedessen wenig erfolgversprechend. Demokratische Partizipation wird dadurch sozial selektiv und die Demokratie grundlegend unterminiert.

It also brought forth a new discipline, visual culture studies, and a hotly contested debate unfolded between art history and visual culture studies over the interpretation of visual culture, whose impact can still be felt today. In this first comparative study Susanne von Falkenhausen reveals the concepts of seeing as scholarly act that underwrite these competing approaches to visuality and society, along with the agendas of identity politics that motivate them. In close readings of key texts spanning from the early 20th century to the present the author crosses expertly between American, German, and British versions of art history, cultural studies, aesthetics, and film studies.
