    Description: If we want to understand contemporary China, the key is through understanding the older generation. This is the generation in China whose life courses almost perfectly synchronised with the emergence and growth of the 'New China' under the rule of the Communist Party (1949). People in their 70s and 80s have double the life expectancy of their parents' generation. The current oldest generation in Shanghai was born in a time when the average household could not afford electric lights, but today they can turn their lights off via their smartphone apps. Based on 16-month ethnographic fieldwork in Shanghai, Ageing with Smartphones in Urban China tackles the intersection between the 'two revolutions' experienced by the older generation in Shanghai: the contemporary smartphone-based digital revolution and the earlier communist revolutions. We find that we can only explain the smartphone revolution if we first appreciate the long-term consequences of these people's experiences during the communist revolutions. The context of this book is a wide range of dramatic social transformations in China, from the Cultural Revolution to the individualism and Confucianism in Digital China. Supported by detailed ethnographic material, the observations and analyses provide a panoramic view of the social landscape of contemporary China, including topics such as the digital and everyday life, ageing and healthcare, intergenerational relations and family development, community building and grassroots organizations, collective memories and political attitudes among ordinary Chinese people.

    Description: Almost 10 years ago the mineral-rich country of Mongolia experienced very rapid economic growth, fuelled by China’s need for coal and copper. New subjects, buildings, and businesses flourished, and future dreams were imagined and hoped for. This period of growth is, however, now over. Mongolia is instead facing high levels of public and private debt, conflicts over land and sovereignty, and a changed political climate that threatens its fragile democratic institutions. Subjective Lives and Economic Transformations in Mongolia details this complex story through the intimate lives of five women. Building on long-term friendships, which span over 20 years, Rebecca documents their personal journeys in an ever-shifting landscape. She reveals how these women use experiences of living a ‘life in the gap’ to survive the hard reality between desired outcomes and their actual daily lives. In doing so, she offers a completely different picture from that presented by economists and statisticians of what it is like to live in this fluctuating extractive economy.

    Description: Museum Object Lessons for the Digital Age explores the nature of digital objects in museums, asking us to question our assumptions about the material, social and political foundations of digital practices. Through four wide-ranging chapters, each focused on a single object – a box, pen, effigy and cloak – this short, accessible book explores the legacies of earlier museum practices of collection, older forms of media (from dioramas to photography), and theories of how knowledge is produced in museums on a wide range of digital projects. Swooping from Ethnographic to Decorative Arts Collections, from the Google Art Project to bespoke digital experiments, Haidy Geismar explores the object lessons contained in digital form and asks what they can tell us about both the past and the future. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience working with collections across the world, Geismar argues for an understanding of digital media as material, rather than immaterial, and advocates for a more nuanced, ethnographic and historicised view of museum digitisation projects than those usually adopted in the celebratory accounts of new media in museums. By locating the digital as part of a longer history of material engagements, transformations and processes of translation, this book broadens our understanding of the reality effects that digital technologies create, and of how digital media can be mobilised in different parts of the world to very different effects.

    Description: Come il mondo ha cambiato i social media è il volume complessivo di comparazione dei risultati di un'ampia indagine etnografica, coordinata da Daniel Miller, dall'eloquente titolo "Why We Post". Nove ricercatori, incluso Miller, hanno trascorso 15 mesi sul campo, in diversi paesi del mondo (Italia del sud, Turchia sudorientale, due siti in Cina, area rurale e area industriale, Trinidad, Inghilterra, India del sud, Cile settentrionale e Brasile) a osservare e studiare, con un approccio etnografico, i modi in cui le persone usano i social media. È un fatto indiscutibile che i social sono entrati nella nostra vita con prepotenza, in modo capillare, per certi aspetti invasivo. Con un linguaggio fluido, talvolta anche colloquiale, il lettore è condotto all'interno di un ambito che gli sembra di conoscere, se non altro perché ne siamo tutti, più o meno, utenti, scoprendo però quanto di valori, di comportamenti culturalmente codificati, di 'polizia morale' ci sia dentro i social media. L'approccio qui presentato parte infatti da un'idea un po' diversa rispetto a quelle più diffuse, e avvalorata nel corso della ricerca: se è indubbio che i social media hanno cambiato il mondo, la questione più interessante riguarda però il modo in cui il mondo li ha cambiati.     Description: スマートフォンはいつも文字通り私たちの鼻先にあり、スマートフォンとは何かという疑問を持つことはなかなかありません。しかし、私たちは本当にスマートフォンを理解しているのでしょうか?より深く理解を掘り下げるために、11人の人類学者が16ヶ月間それぞれアフリカ、アジア、ヨーロッパ、南アメリカの各地域で暮らし、高齢者へのスマートフォンの普及について調査しました。この調査によって、スマートフォンは若者だけでなく、すべての世代が利用するテクノロジーであることが明らかになりました。 『グローバル・スマートフォン』は、独自の観点をそのグローバルな比較研究から提示します。スマートフォンは常に身近にあり、「絶え間なき機会主義(Perpetual Opportunism)」を満たすデバイスであるだけでなく、今や私たちの生活の場そのものにさえなっています。本著は、スマートフォンが単なる「アプリデバイス」以上のものであることを示し、人々が口にするスマートフォンへの意見と、実際にはどのようにスマートフォンを使用しているのか、その違いを探ります。 マートフォンは、私たち使用者が変容させることができるその程度において、未だかつてなく自由度の高いデバイスです。この自由さにより、スマートフォンには使用者個人の価値観が急速に反映されます。この価値観を理解するためには、各地域における民族的・文化的差異を考慮する必要があります。例えば、アル=クドゥス(エルサレム)、ブラジル、そしてイタリアなど、各地域がたどる高齢化の軌跡の多様性に加えて、中国と日本のビジュアル・コミュニケーション、カメルーンとウガンダのモバイルマネー、チリとアイルランドの保健情報へのアクセスの仕方など、これらの差異を考察して初めて、スマートフォンとは何か、そしてスマートフォンがもたらす生活の変容を理解することができるのです。

    Description: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 have influenced the actions of international and intergovernmental organisations and governments around the world, and have dictated priorities for international aid spending. Culture, including heritage, is often presented as fundamental to addressing the SDGs: since 2010, the United Nations has adopted no fewer than five major policy recommendations that assert its importance as a driver and enabler of development. Yet, heritage is marginalized from the Sustainable Development Goals. Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development constitutes a substantial and original assessment of whether and how heritage has contributed to three key dimensions of sustainable development (namely poverty reduction, gender equality and environmental sustainability) within the context of its marginalisation from the Sustainable Development Goals and from previous international development agendas. Sophia Labadi adopts a novel, inclusive, large-scale and systematic approach, providing the first comprehensive history of the international approaches on culture (including heritage) for development, from 1970 to the present day. This book is also the first to assess the negative and positive impacts of all the international projects implemented in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of UN organisations that aimed to provide evidence for the contribution of heritage for development in time for the negotiation of the SDGs. The book’s conclusions provide recommendations for rethinking heritage for development, while reflecting on the major shortcomings of the selected projects.

    Description: The Origins of Self explores the role that selfhood plays in defining human society, and each human individual in that society. It considers the genetic and cultural origins of self, the role that self plays in socialisation and language, and the types of self we generate in our individual journeys to and through adulthood. Edwardes argues that other awareness is a relatively early evolutionary development, present throughout the primate clade and perhaps beyond, but self-awareness is a product of the sharing of social models, something only humans appear to do. The self of which we are aware is not something innate within us, it is a model of our self produced as a response to the models of us offered to us by other people. Edwardes proposes that human construction of selfhood involves seven different types of self. All but one of them are internally generated models, and the only non-model, the actual self, is completely hidden from conscious awareness. We rely on others to tell us about our self, and even to let us know we are a self.

    Description: How the World Changed Social Media is the first book in Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of nine anthropologists who each spent 15 months living in communities across the world. This book offers a comparative analysis summarising the results of the research and exploring the impact of social media on politics and gender, education and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individual or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why does equality online fail to shift inequality offline? How did memes become the moral police of the internet? Supported by an introduction to the project’s academic framework and theoretical terms that help to account for the findings, the book argues that the only way to appreciate and understand something as intimate and ubiquitous as social media is to be immersed in the lives of the people who post. Only then can we discover how people all around the world have already transformed social media in such unexpected ways and assess the consequences.

Quando os brasileiros de baixa renda começaram a acessar redes sociais, pessoas de alto poder aquisitivo ridicularizaram o conhecimento tecnológico limitado, o gosto diferente e a baixa escolaridade desses usuários mais pobres, mas isso não os intimidou, e eles continuaram a expandir sua presença nos serviços on-line. Jovens criaram perfis para parentes mais velhos, quase analfabetos, e os ensinaram a navegar em plataformas como Facebook e WhatsApp. Juliano Spyer procura entender por que brasileiros de baixa renda investiram tanto tempo e dinheiro para incorporar o uso das mídias sociais a seu cotidiano. Explora essa questão por uma variedade de temas, incluindo educação, relacionamentos, trabalho e política e argumenta que o uso das mídias sociais reflete valores e motivações contraditórias.
