    Notes: Abstract One hundred and three samples of granitic rock taken systematically from the Andean part of Colombia reveal that the observed variation in phosphorus content reflects the variation observed for the wholerock chemical composition. This relationship was established using a form of trend analysis termed COMTRENA and information-theory statistics.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to determine a physicochemical profile of a new deep-storage reservoir and to determine the influence of impoundment and thermal stratification in the reservoir on the physicochemical limnology of the parent river. The presence of thermal stratification from May through November caused the most significant change in water conditions. Of 23 parameters studied, 12 remained unchanged, 10 improved, and 2 deteriorated (Table VI). The greatest downstream changes in water conditions from those upstream from the reservoir were a decrease in temperature, an increase of ammonia, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide during the period of thermal stratification. Ammonia did not increase to a level considered to be toxic to aquatic species. It could, however, serve as a nutrient for certain species of plants and result in a change in community structure. Water tempeature downstream from the reservoir was always within the annual temperature range of the river upstream from the reservoir; however, the summer maximum in the tailrace was decreased to a temperature that could interfere wih the normal life cycle of many species.

    Notes: Abstract The chromosome numbers of several Mediterranean and Central European species from the genusCentaurea L. have been studied. The material was collected in natural habitats, exceptC. thracica andC. maxima. The numbers forC. cineraria (2n = 36; tetraploid!),C. subtilis (2n = 22),C. sonchifolia (2n = 44),C. sphaerocephala (2n = 44),C. napifolia (2n = 22),C. achaia (2n = 22),C. thracica (2n = 18), andC. maxima (2n = 28) are reported for the first time. For the following species earlier counts are confirmed:C. cineraria (diploid, 2n = 18),C. maculosa (2n = 18),C. rhenana (2n = 18),C. triumfettii (2n = 22 + 0−1 B; first report of accessory chromosome for this species),C. scabiosa (2n = 20 + 0−3 B),C. crassifolia (2n = 30). B-chromosomes are reported for 3 populations ofCentaurea scabiosa from Berlin; they lack in 2 populations from Bayern and Hessen.

    Notes: Abstract Present ionic concentrations of Ca ++,HCO 3 - ,and HPO 4 = in surface and groundwater runoff in Florida indicate that phosphorus is being concentrated in rock through dissolution and reprecipitation, with calcium phosphate increasing at the expense of calcium carbonate. Analog computer simulation of a systems model of this process suggests that significant enrichment can occur in 20 million years. The degree of enrichment depends on the supply of new phosphorus to Florida through rain and oceanic exchange processes. If the calcium phosphate content of original rock is 0.5 to 1.0 percent (0.52 to 1.05 percent P 2 O 5),a formation with 10 to 20 percent calcium phosphate (CaPO 4 or 10.5 to 21.0 percent P 2 O 5)as in the Hawthorn Formation (Miocene)may result. Nutrient upwelling along the continental slope coupled with transport to the estuaries by lateral eddy diffusion can supply an additional 400 mg P|m 2 |yr which, if deposited, would result in a sediment with a 4.3 percent CaPO 4 (4.5 percent P 2 O 5)content. If this is enriched later by resolution, 40 percent CaPO 4 (42 percent P 2 O 5)results. Through geologic time, the ocean may be considered as a source of phosphorus to the land through rain or estuarine sediment.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of added nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon on the phytoplankton of a small recreational reservoir in central Arizona was investigated during the summer, 1974. Polyethylene bags were used to isolate lake water and the natural populations for the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon individually and in combination. A large increase in phytoplankton numbers, extractable chlorophyll, pH and dissolved oxygen occurred only in bags to which both nitrogen and phosphorus were added, suggesting that both nitrogen and phosphorus levels were limiting to the primary producers. Little alteration in species composition resulted from the addition of the above nutrients.

    Notes: Abstract The average annual rate of carbon production in Cayuga Lake, New York, was determined by 14C uptake and by a phosphorus supply method. The rate of phosphorus supply was converted to units of carbon production using observed sestonic C : P ratios. The two methods gave good agreement and annual carbon production was estimated to be 130 gC m−2 yr−1.

    Notes: Abstract Natural and artificial lakes in the most recently glaciated portions of Iowa have significantly greater total ion concentrations than those in other areas of the state. A similar distribution was found for total nitrogen concentrations. Lake origin seems of greater importance than location in determining trophic state. As a group, the artificial lakes have lower concentrations of total phosphorus, total chlorophyll, and greater Secchi disk transparency than do the natural lakes. This seems related to differences in the dynamics of the phosphorus cycles in these lake types.

BrazilianDrimys brasiliensis a clear correlation between morphological variation and eco-geographical differentiation. This is backed by data on the (ultra)structure of the lower leaf surface. A new infraspecific taxonomy is proposed, andD. roraimensis andD. angustifolia are recognized as distinct species of the Guyana Highlands and S. Brazil, respectively. The affinities between these and other taxa of the paleopolyploid genus, its evolution and its position within the family are discussed.

Available P determinations using chemical extractants are hampered by high iron, aluminium and organic matter contents in these soils. Resin-extractable soil P levels correlated strongly with plant leaf P contents at a wide variety of sites.
