    Notes: Abstract Food consumption, standard metabolism, and growth of juvenile snakehead, Channa striatus, a cannibalistic and air-breathing fish were measured at 24–26 °C under controlled laboratory condition. Snakehead weighing 3.2–29.5 g were evaluated, and were fed smaller snakehead. Based on our observations, we determined bioenergetics relationships between specific food consumption, metabolic rates, and body weight. These values, along with other published parameter values allowed us to construct a bioenergetics model for snakehead. We then verified our model with growth and food consumption measurements from an independent feeding trial. Predicted fish growth closely matched observed growth. Our model underestimated cumulative food consumption when a constant activity value was used, but consumption estimates improved when we used non-constant activity values (1-5 times of standard metabolism). Predicted fish maintenance ration was 1.7% of body weight per day. Food conversion efficiency was greatest (0.59) when fed 2% body weight daily, but declined when daily consumption exceeded 6% body weight. This model provides a useful approach for assessing food requirements of snakehead under controlled condition.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of abscisic acid (ABA) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) on growth of rice seedlings were compared. The lowest tested concentration of ABA and MJ that inhibited seedling growth was found to be 4.5 and 0.9 µM, respectively. Growth inhibition by ABA is reversible, whereas that by MJ is irreversible. GA3 was found to be more effective in reversing inhibition of shoot growth by ABA than by MJ. KCl partially relieved MJ-inhibited, but not ABA-inhibited, growth of rice seedlings. The beneficial effect of K+ on growth of rice seedlings in MJ medium could not be replaced by Li+, Na+ or Cs+. MJ treatment caused a marked release of K+ into the medium. In order to understand whether cell wall-bound peroxidase activity was inversely related to rice seedling growth, effects of ABA and MJ on cell wall-bound peroxidase activity were also examined. Results indicated that both ABA and MJ increased cell wall-bound peroxidase activity in roots and shoots of rice seedlings. Although MJ (4.5 µM) was less effective in inhibiting root growth than ABA (9 µM), MJ was found to increase more cell wall-bound peroxidase activity in roots than ABA.

    Notes: Abstract Growth, development and nutrient status of micropropagated Rubus idaeus cv. Glen Prosen in response to inoculation with nine species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi from three different genera was investigated. The nine species of AM fungi included, Glomus clarum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, Gigaspora rosea, Gi. gigantea, Gi. margarita, Scutellospora calospora, S. heterogama and S. persica. Plant responses to AM fungi varied from growth enhancement to growth depression. Depressive growth effects were specific to Gigaspora species. Furthermore, particular species of AM fungi had unique effects on the mineral status of the raspberry plants. Importance of isolate selection for inoculation of micropropagated raspberry plants is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Reproduction in Tubifex tubifex is being used as part of a suite of indicators of sediment toxicity in Canada and Spain, and reproduction of T. tubifex is being considered as a component of sediment objectives for environmental regulation and clean-up in the Canadian Great Lakes. The data being used to set these reproductive targets have been developed from a single culture of T. tubifex from Lake Erie. The plasticity of this particular species is well known and before it can be adopted widely as a test organism it is necessary to determine whether a single culture source should be used or if cultures derived from different populations respond similarly. A series of experiments with two cultures, one from Lake Erie the second from a small mountain stream in Northern Spain have shown that the Spanish worms appear to produce fewer cocoons per adult (mean 8.6 S.D. 1.0) than those from Lake Erie (mean 10.4 S.D. 0.3) at 22.5 °C, a standard test temperature. The number of young produced per adult by the Spanish culture is also lower (mean 19.0 S.D. 4.6) than the L. Erie population (mean 30.6 S.D. 2.3), however, the Spanish population has higher reproductions rates at a lower temperature. The Spanish worms also have lower and more variable growth rates than the Canadian population. There also appear to be slight differences in the sensitivities to toxicants, with the Canadian worms having higher LC50s for copper, chromium and cadmium. While there are differences in the responses in the two cultures these are not considered to be sufficient to invalidate the use of either population in a standard bioassay protocol as long as appropriate calibration and validation are undertaken.

    Notes: Abstract Mechanically-induced stress (MIS) was applied to cauliflower seedlings by brushing with paper for 1.5 minutes each day. With the possible exception of the effect on leaf 1 thickness, none of the growth responses induced by MIS were significantly nullified by spraying the seedlings with the ethylene inhibitor, silver thiosulphate (STS). The ethylene-releasing compound, ethephon, induced some changes in cauliflower growth similar to those caused by MIS, such as reduced shoot and leaf 1 weight, a reduction in cotyledon and leaf 1 area, and an increase in the thickness of leaves 1 and 2. However, other effects of ethephon were different from those of brushing. Petiole length and diameter and the weight and area of leaf 2 were reduced by brushing but generally increased by ethephon. STS reversed, at least partially, most of the ethephon effects on growth, thus demonstrating that it acts as an inhibitor of ethylene action in cauliflower. The results are discussed in relation to the possible endogenous control of MIS growth responses by endogenous ethylene and auxin.

    Notes: Summary Progeny trials were planted at Tafo in 1952 and 1954 to compare 3 selfed local-Trinitarios, 1 outcrossed and 3 sibbed Upper Amazon progenies and 13 hybrids between Amelonado or local-Trinitarios and Upper Amazons; 1 trial included West African Amelonado. The Amazon hybrids and the outcrossed Amazon were particularly vigorous and precocious and maintained a yield advantage for 20 years. The 13 hybrids were similar in yield potential, but varied in net yield following differential losses from pod diseases, mainly caused by Phytophthora palmivora. Disease losses were lowest on one of the sibbed Amazons and the outcrossed Amazon and lower on Amelonado than on any of the 7 hybrids tested with it; in both trials losses were lower on Amelonado hybrids than on Trinitario hybrids. There was wide variation in both size and growth rates of mature trees and no consistent relationship between continued growth and crop. It seemed that later yields were not prejudiced by the precocity of Amazon hybrids, the yields from all types fluctuated together. Because the differences in disease losses are likely to be accentuated under farmer's conditions. Amelonado hybrids are preferable to local-Trinitario hybrids. The results also suggest that commercially acceptable pure Upper Amazon varieties could be developed.

    Notes: Abstract Two tubificid oligochaetes, Branchiura sowerbyi and Tubifex tubifex, were evaluated as potential test organisms for sediment bioassays. We attempt to reproduce the sediment bioassay proposed by Reynoldson et al. (1991) using his strain of Tubifex tubifex and his reference sediment and to compare this technique using Branchiura sowerbyi. This species was chosen because it is more common and dominant in tropical and subtropical environments than Tubifex tubifex. Data on survival and reproduction were obtained for both species, and growth estimates were obtained for B. sowerbyi. The sublethal bioassay with T. tubifex confirmed earlier estimates of a test duration of 4 weeks at 22.5 °C. B. sowerbyi cultures can produce usable estimates in 21 days at 30 °C.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Un programme d'ordinateur a été mis au point pour calculer les activités ioniques du calcium et l'orthophosphate dans un grand nombre de solutions. Dans le cas de solutions synthétiques, les calculs sont vérifiés en comparant les valeurs de pH, obtenues par ordinateur, avec celles observées expérimentalement. Des essais de ce type, avec des solutions possèdant des concentrations de calcium et d'orthophosphate trouvées dans les liquides biologiques et à des valeurs de pH variant de 3.00 à 10.00, indiquent que le programme est adapté pour des applications biologiques. Le programme n'est pas effectif pour des solutions, dans les lesquelles l'ion bromure est la source principale de la force ionique, sans doute, par manque d'équation étendue de Debye-Hückel dans ces circonstances. Aucune formation de complexe de phosphate de sodium n'a été notée à des concentrations biologiques normales.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Es wurde ein Computer-Programm ausgearbeitet, um die Ionenaktivitäten von Calcium und Orthophosphat in einer breiten Varietät von Lösungen zu berechnen. Die Berechnungen wurden bei synthetischen Lösungen durch Vergleiche zwischen den auf diese Weise errechneten pH-Werten und den experimentell gefundenen kontrolliert. Diese Art Kontrollen mit Calcium-und Orthophosphatkonzentrationen, wie sie in biologischen Flüssigkeiten gefunden werden, und mit pH-Werten zwischen 3,0 und 10,0 wies darauf hin, daß das Programm für biologische Anwendungen geeignet war. Das Programm konnte nicht benützt werden für solche Lösungen, bei welchen hauptsächlich das Bromidion zur Einstellung der Ionenstärke verwendet wurde, vermutlich weil die erweiterte Debye-Hückel-Gleichung unter diesen Umständen nicht anwendbar ist. Die Bildung eines Natriumphosphat-Komplexes unter normalen biologischen Konzentrationen konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden.
    Notes: Abstract A computer program has been designed to calculate the ionic activities of calcium and orthophosphate in a wide variety of solutions. In the case of synthetic solutions the calculations were checked by comparing the computed pH values with those observed experimentally. Tests of this type with solutions having the concentrations of calcium and orthophosphate found in biological fluids and with pH values ranging from pH 3.0–10.0 indicated that the program was suitable for biological applications. The program was not effective for solutions in which the bromide ion was a principal source of ionic strength probably because of the failure of the extended Debye-Hückel equation under those circumstances. No evidence for the formation of any sodium phosphate complex at normal biological concentrations could be found.

    Notes: Abstract In the eutrophic Bautzen reservoir (German Democratic Republic) the compensation light intensities (photosynthesis = respiration of the phytoplankton) have been found to be extremely low if no free carbon dioxide is available. This result is interpreted as a minimization of the cell respiration under CO2-limitation of the photosynthesis.
