Description: The most important tool in Germany's polar research program is the research and supply vessel Polarstern. The ship was commissioned in 1982, the maiden voyage started at the end of 1982. The owner of the ship is the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany. Within the last 25 years Polarstern performed a total of 44 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The ship is well equipped for meteorological research as well as for routine meteorological services. The meteorological office is permanently manned with a weather technician/- observer from the German Weather Service (DWD) who performs the routine 3-hourly synoptic observations and the daily upper air soundings. Additionally, a weather forecaster is responsible to advice the ships captain as well as the helicopter pilots and all scientists in any weather related question. The forecaster gets assistance from the weather technician who performs the satellite picture reception and manages the near real time data flow.

Description: This is a collection of continuous meteorological observations at Ny-Ålesund, obtained from a meteorological mast located at 11.9222° E, 78.9266° N on the observation field in the vicinity of the AWIPEV Atmosphere Observatory. Air temperature is measured by shaded and ventilated PT100 sensors at 2 m and 10 m height, and on the same levels wind speed and direction is retrieved using the Combined Wind Sensor Classic by Thies Clima. Two independent humidity sensors are detecting relative humidity at 2 m height, while station pressure is given from a sensor installed about 10m towards North. All data are provided in high temporal resolution as average over 1 minute, respectively. The data set collection will be updated regularly by new data.

Description: At AWIPEV research base in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, regular radiosonde launches are operated once per day. The launch frequency may increase to 6-hourly soundings during specific campaign periods. The Vaisala RS41-SGP radiosondes provide data of pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction from ground to about 30 km height. The given data set contains vertical profiles with 1-second time resolution data as obtained by the manufacturer's data processing, quality controlled for appropriate physical ranges.

Description: Automatic weather stations (AWS) are due to the extreme cold conditions an attractive option to get more dens climatic data from Antarctica. These data is needed for weather forecast models or other climatic models. Data sets of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysis model are used for comparison with AWS in the Weddell Sea. This region if of particular interest for the BRIOS2 (Bremerhaven Regional Ice-Ocean Simulations) model which produce results related to sea ice processes, water mass modifications and circulation patterns, all leading to a better understanding of the thermohaline ocean circulation in the Southern Ocean. Therefore, observation at AWS' can be used as a validation of the ECMWF model and can reveal sources for errors for climate models using a ECMWF forcing.

Description: The upper air soundings are normally performed once a day to measure vertical profiles of air pressure, temperature, relative humidity and the wind vector. Helium filled balloons (TOTEX 600 g, 800 g) were used to carry Vaisala RS80 radiosondes. Whenever possible, the launches were performed about 10 UTC. Condensed measurements (TEMP Format FM-35) were transferred without delay into the Global Telecommunication System GTS were they contribute for the world wide weather forecasts. The profile data were taken every 5-10 seconds which result in a vertical profile resolution of about 25-50 meter. The profiles start at the helideck 10 m above sea level and terminate at the burst level of the balloons, normally at heights between 25 and 37 km.
