    Description: Radio communications in the range of 60 GHz enable multi-Gigabit/s network access in indoor environments. Due to the propagation characteristics of such signals only very short range radio transmission is feasible. In order to distribute these signals across large distances, analog transmission over optical fiber is considered. In this work, mode-locked laser diodes serve as optoelectronic oscillators for the generation of such signals. Their system-relevant properties are studied in detail.

    Description: Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde eine Plattform zur individuellen Ansteuerung einer Vielzahl thermisch aktivierter Mikroventile und aktoren, auf Grundlage eines Phasenüberganges, zum Einsatz in der Mikrofluidik entwickelt. Ventile dienen dazu den Fluidstrom in komplexen mikrofluidischen Systemen, aus Einsatzgebieten wie der Biologie, Chemie oder Biotechnologie, zu manipulieren. Mit steigender Komplexität der Mikrosysteme steigt auch die Anzahl der benötigten, individuell steuerbaren Mikroventile.

    Description: In this work, the realisation of an adaptive driving beam is examined that is based on the motion prediction of the ego vehicle and other traffic participants. Furthermore, light functions are developed and analysed regarding their effectiveness that project situation adaptive recommendations for action in front of the vehicle regarding a turn or lane change intention of the driver.

Das Künstliche Akkommodationssystem ermöglicht die dauerhafte Wiederherstellung der Akkommodationsfähigkeit. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein neues Konzept für die bedarfsgerechte Energieversorgung des Künstlichen Akkommodationssystems erstellt.

    Description: The aim of this work was to identify the patterns that can induce heating around implanted cardiac pacemakers during MRI and to develop strategies to counteract them. Two approaches were taken: computer simulations of the occurring electromagnetic field distributions and in-vitro experiments using phantoms in real MRI devices, both for conventional bore-hole and new open MRI systems. Using the open MRI, the observed heating could be reduced significantly.

    Description: In this work, the realization limits of an impulse-based Ultra-Wideband (UWB) localization system for indoor applications have been thoroughly investigated and verified by measurements. The analysis spans from the position calculation algorithms, through hardware realization and modeling, up to the localization experiments conducted in realistic scenarios. The main focus was put on identification and characterization of limiting factors as well as developing methods to overcome them.

    Description: Teleskopierbare, spielbehaftete Hubgerüste von Gabelstaplern werden während eines Arbeitszyklus oftmals zu Schwingungen angeregt. Die charakteristischen Schwingungseigenschaften, bedingt durch das usammenwirken von Spiel, auskragender Last und Schwerkraft, werden experimentell untersucht und durch ein 5-Massen-Modell sehr gut abgebildet.Sowohl mit aktiven als auch mit passiven Maßnahmen lassen sich die Schwingungen schnell und deutlich reduzieren.

    Description: Elastocaloric cooling is an emerging solid-state cooling technology with the potential to provide environmentally friendly, efficient cooling. The elastocaloric effect in superelastic shape memory alloy films is used to develop advanced cooling devices for small-scale applications. Cascaded and parallelized devices are developed to increase device temperature span and cooling capacity. The concepts are proven experimentally, a maximum temperature span of 27° C is achieved in a cascaded device.

    Description: This work has arisen out of the strong demand for a superior power-added efficiency (PAE) of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) high-power amplifiers (HPAs) that are part of any advanced wireless multifunctional RF-system with limited prime energy. Different concepts and approaches on device and design level for PAE improvements are analyzed, e.g. structural and layout changes of the GaN transistor and advanced circuit design techniques for PAE improvements of GaN HEMT HPAs.

    Description: In diesem Buch wird ein drahtloses OFDM-Kommunikationssystem für Hochgeschwindigkeitszüge analysiert, der Funkkanal modelliert und das Modell durch Messungen verifiziert. Mit Hilfe des Kanalmodells können drahtlose Zugkommunikationssysteme unter Berücksichtigung der hohen Zeitvarianz in optimaler Weise ausgelegt werden. Aus der Untersuchung verschiedener Einflüsse werden richtungsweisende Regeln für die Auslegung solcher Systeme abgeleitet und ein entsprechendes OFDM-System vorgeschlagen.

    Description: Computational homogenization permits to capture the influence of the microstructure on the cyclic mechanical behavior of polycrystalline metals. In this work we investigate methods to compute Laguerre tessellations as computational cells of polycrystalline microstructures, propose a new method to assign crystallographic orientations to the Laguerre cells and use Bayesian optimization to find suitable parameters for the underlying micromechanical model from macroscopic experiments.

    Description: Für Verbindungen im Holzbau werden häufig selbstbohrende Holzschrauben eingesetzt. Diese können oft mit geringen Abständen untereinander und zu den Bauteilrändern angeordnet werden. Durch die Einhaltung von Mindestabständen und Mindestholzdicken soll hierbei ein Versagen des Holzes durch Aufspalten verhindert werden. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde ein Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem sich die Anforderungen an Abständen und Holzdicken effizienter und zuverlässiger als bisher bestimmen lassen.

    Description: The aim of this work is to model and experimentally characterize the anisotropic material behavior of SMC composites on the macroscale with consideration of the microstructure. Temperature-dependent thermoelastic behavior and failure behavior are modeled and the corresponding material properties are determined experimentally. Additionally, experimental biaxial damage investigations are performed. A parameter identification merges modeling and experiments and validates the models.

    Description: Fracture of storage particles is considered to be one of the major reasons for capacity fade and increasing power loss in Li-ion batteries. In this work, we tackle the problem by merging a coupled model of mechanical stress and diffusion of Li-ions with a phase field description of an evolving crack. The novel approach allows us to study the evolution of the Li concentration together with the initiation and growth of a crack in an arbitrary geometry and without presuming a specific crack path.

    Description: Within the bioliq®-process, the organic phase of straw pyrolysis condensates can be gasified directly, while the aqueous phase can be mixed with char to form a slurry, which also can be gasified. For production and storage, several mixers and stirrers are examined. Grinding the porous and elongated char particles decelerates sedimentation and also reduces the viscosity. Thus, higher concentrated slurries can be mixed, which leads to higher stability.

    Description: The oscillating disc cutting process has shown excellent results in precisely removing area-limited-concrete structures. Due to the highly dynamic oscillatory motion, the stiffness requirements to the tool structure and the basic machine have to be considered, which is the main purpose of this work. Based on these results, a concept of a mechanical adaption of the oscillating disc cutting process to an excavator attachment tool will be developed and tested on a prototype.

    Description: On almost every construction site, mobile fresh-concrete pumps of different designs can be found, all of which have an interruptions in delivery. In this work, a fresh-concrete constant-flow pump is developed and simulated. In order to be able to develop the new type of fresh-concrete valve required for this, knowledge is built up in a first step. This is done with a test bench using statistical design of experiments.

    Description: We study the potential of the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform for integrated optics. The unique properties of selected organic materials are added to silicon devices made with CMOS-based processes. We investigate the feasibility of this approach by making prototypes of key components in form of photonic integrated circuits: SOH lasers and SOH modulators are designed, fabricated, post-processed, and characterized. Application scenarios are identified.

    Description: The focus of this work is on the modelling of the degradation behaviour of conventional lithium-ion cells with graphite/NMC electrodes in conjunction with electrolytes based on LiPF6 in organic solvents. The potential for improvements of parameterization methods dealing with physical-chemical aging effects and simulation studies for optimization of the battery lifetime is shown. In the process of model parameterization mostly data-based as well as non-invasive analysis methods are used.

Identification modules provide information about the current driving and working state, the machine operator, the bulk material mass and system parameters. Damage modules with complexity reduced calculation approaches allow a quantification of the machine damage.     Description: ECG recordings provide diagnostic relevant information on the de- and repolarisation sequences of the heart. A modification of the repolarisation sequence is assumed to cause Torsades de Pointes. Especially drug induced effects on the repolarisation processes are in focus, since some non-cardiac drugs have been associated with sudden cardiac death in the 1990s. The analysis of the ventricular repolarisation using a set of parameters depicting the morphology of the T-wave is introduced in this work. Therefore, new methods of fully automatic patient-specific QRS detection, beat classification and precise T-wave delineation are presented. Using these methods, medical studies are investigated regarding the modification of the T-wave by different compounds. Also the impact of the heart rate on the morphology of the T-wave is part of this research.The reliable identification of ventricular ectopic beats allows an analysis of the influence of these beats on subsequent heart beats. It turned out that the morphology of subsequent heart beats can significantly be changed. This might give new information on the proarrythmical risk of ventricular ectopic beats.

    Description: In this work, a flexible biosensor platform based on impedance spectroscopy and comprising of gold electrodes, polymeric flow cells and a suitable surface modification were developed. Initially, several surface modification techniques described in literature were implemented and optimized for impedimetric biosensors but their individual limitations rendered them unsuitable for this biosensor platform. A novel method based on photobleaching was developed and tested showing satisfactory results.

    Description: Due to their high energy conversion efficiencies and low emissions, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) show promise as a replacement for combustion-based electrical generators at all sizes. Further increase of SOFC efficiency can be achieved by microstructural optimization of the oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte and the mixed ionic-electronic conducting cathode. By application of nanoscaled thin films, the exceptionally high efficiency allows the realization of mobile SOFCs.

    Description: This work describes the influence of catalytic converter heating strategies on the emissions during heating operation, as well as during the subsequent load demand at different engine start temperatures.     Description: Based on the Somatic Marker Hypothesis, an attempt is made to measure the anticipation of risky traffic situations by means of the electrodermal activity. The results indicate that the strength of the anticipatory electrodermal activity is systematically related to situational factors of a traffic situation. In addition, a model was derived that postulates an inverted U-shaped relationship between driver’s experience and anticipatory electrodermal activity.

    Description: Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Fahrzeugdetektion anhand monoskopischer Videomerkmale. Aus den Bildern einer im Fahrzeug angebrachten Videokamera werden charakteristische Merkmale extrahiert.Diese Beobachtungen werden fusioniert und zeitlich verfolgt. Dabei kommen Joint Probabilistic Data Association- Filter zum Einsatz. Mehrere Bewegungsmodelle werden in einem Interacting Multiple Model-Verfahren verknüpft, um eine zuverlässige Verfolgung zu gewährleisten.

    Description: Techniques based on numerical simulations have been applied to the analysis of the heat exchanger and the High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) module of HTS current leads. In the first case correlations have been derived for the meander flow geometry. In the second case steady state and transient thermal-electric models have been validated. Both techniques are used to design and optimize HTS current leads. The correlations were applied to a predictive analysis of the ITER HTS current leads.

    Description: This study investigates the effects of swirl on the supersonic wake of longitudinally-aligned axisymmetric afterbodies. The swirl was introduced upstream of the base corner by either spinning non-canted or non-spinning canted fins. Depending on the introduced swirl rate, both the experimental and numerical results show two distinctively different wake flow structures. The fluid-dynamic processes present in the rotating wakes and the resulting structural changes are analyzed in detail.

The approach combines geometric constraints between two views of a static scene with a model to describe the apparent motion in the image plane. Based on comparisons with discrete dislocation dynamics simulations, a description of dislocation networks is developed.     Description: This work presents a behavior planning algorithm for automated driving in urban environments with an uncertain and dynamic nature. The algorithm allows to consider the prediction uncertainty (e.g. different intentions), perception uncertainty (e.g. occlusions) as well as the uncertain interactive behavior of the other agents explicitly. Simulating the most likely future scenarios allows to find an optimal policy online that enables non-conservative planning under uncertainty.

    Description: This work describes a method for weighted least squares approximation of an unbounded number of data points using a B-spline function. The method can shift the bounded B-spline function definition range during run-time. The approximation method is used for optimizing velocity trajectories for an electric vehicle with respect to travel time, comfort and energy consumption. The trajectory optimization method is extended to a driver assistance system for automated vehicle longitudinal control.

    Description: Both types of hybrids are tested and compared in terms of their mechanical properties in quasi-static, dynamic and cyclic three-point bending tests in reference to their damage behaviour. The intrinsic hybrid structures bear approximately a 20% higher maximum force at all load cases investigated and are less prone to mechanical, thermal and corrosive pre-damage.

Water added to silica glass increases its specific volume so that the silica expands near the surface. Mechanical boundary conditions give rise for compressive “swelling stresses”.     Description: The incremental hole drilling method is used and further developed to determine residual stress states in thick film systems. The application limits regarding the applicability on film systems and the influence of the system's built up is examined by finite element simulations. A new evaluation method for the hole drilling method is proposed. Using this method residual stress states in thick film systems can be determined reliably in the coating, at the interface and also in the substrate.

    Description: To estimate the reachable specific energy and power of aqueous Li-air batteries, a physical based model was developed, which for the first time includes the microstructure of Li-air cells. Parameters like solid/liquid interface resistances were quantified with help of a newly developed setup. Simulations based on the developed model revealed that even conservative estimations promise an increase in the specific energy by at least a factor of two compared to present Li-ion batteries.

    Description: In this work, silicon nitride/silicon carbide composites are manufactured and characterized for tribologically highly stressed applications. The characterization of the composite materials shows the influence of the silicon carbide content on the resulting microstructure and the mechanical properties. The friction properties of the composite materials were characterized in tribological experiments. The composites show very good friction and wear behavior.

    Description: The work describes a method for the determination of the conversion by radical photopolymerization of acrylic coatings that is suitable for an in situ monitoring during the coating process.The applied method is based on the 1620 nm overtone absorption of the acrylate end group. The capability of the sensor to discriminate between polymerized and unpolymerized coatings on metal substrates down to a coating thickness of less than 16µm is demonstrated and and proved by reference measurements.

    Description: Environment perception with cameras is an important requirement for many applications for autonomous vehicles and robots. This work presents a stereoscopic omnidirectional camera system for autonomous vehicles which resolves the problem of a limited field of view and provides a 360° panoramic view of the environment. We present a new projection model for these cameras and show that the camera setup overcomes major drawbacks of traditional perspective cameras in many applications.

    Description: Hot-electron bolometers are fast and low noise radiation detectors which can be used for many different applications. The aim of this work was to optimize the fabrication process of hot-electron bolometers and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying processes. To achieve this, the fabrication of the superconducting thin films was optimized and the superconducting properties of the films were analyzed. Detectors fabricated using the results showed a record value for the noise temperature.

    Description: The assessment of perceived exertion is highly relevant for workplace design to improve the quality of work. This approach represents an objective method based on kinematic data. The method's objective was to determine the feasibility of using the time derivative of acceleration - jerk - as an indicator of time of increased physical exertion (TIPE). The result showed that the jerk data peaks' height and frequency are useful indicators for identifying physical exertion.
