    Description: Abstract
Description: This repository contains the site amplification functions obtained by Bindi et al. (2023). The site amplifications were obtained through a Generalized Inversion Technique (GIT) applied to seismic recordings downloaded from EIDA (Strollo et al., 2021) and EarthScope (https://service.iris.edu/) using stream2segment software (Zaccarelli, 2018). We computed the Fourier spectra of S-waves windows considering the square root of the sum of the two horizontal components squared. The site amplifications are relative to the station CH.LSS (station Linth-Limmern of the Swiss network, https://stations.seismo.ethz.ch/en/station-information/station-details/station-given-networkcode-and-stationcode/index.html?networkcode=CH&stationcode=LLS), installed on rock with shear wave velocity averaged over the top 30 m equal to vs30=2925 m/s (Fäh et al. 2009). The site amplification at the reference station LLS is constrained to be equal to 1 for frequencies f below 10 Hz and to the function exp[−0.015π(f−10)] above 10 Hz, to account for near-surface attenuation effects at high frequencies. Details about the decomposition can be found in Bindi et al (2023). The file siteAmp_repo.csv uses as field separator the semicolon (;). It contains: - column freq: values of frequency between 0.5 and 20 Hz; - columns with site amplifications: 3001 columns with column name given by network_station_channel (e.g. GR_MOX_HH indicated station MOX of network GR, channel HH). The R script (R Core Team, 2024) plotRepo.R shows how to read and plot the site amplification for a given station.

Description: This paper demonstrates how historical research is a valuable tool for identifying past geological, geomorphological and climatic hazards and therefore critical for mitigating and reducing future risk. The authors describe the potential of a scientific field that straddles that of the geologist, geographer, historian and archivist. Historical records include a range of materials and sources of information, which can be very diverse; from written documents to cartographies, and from drawings to marble tombstones. They are all useful and convey important data, on the date of the event, the size of the phenomena, sometimes on ground effects, damage or magnitude. The authors discuss how to conduct historical research by providing a list of locations and how important historical documents can be found. Works that mention geological phenomena are listed, starting with the first occasional descriptions by individuals in letters, up to very specific publications in individual fields of interest. With this introduction, the editors of the Special Issue wish to draw attention to the importance of historical documentation, which is too often ignored or considered of low priority by the scientific community, but can contain key information on events, their impacts and social and cultural adaptations.

Description: With the aim of dating the early salt production at Puntone di Scarlino (Central Tuscany, Italy) and establishing the environmental history of this coastal site, a sediment core was studied, taken from the lagoon next to the archaeological site. Diachronic radiocarbon dating of terrestrial plant macro remains and Loripes orbiculatus (Poli, 1795) shells, a burrowing lucinid bivalve occurring throughout the sediment cored, revealed a Marine Reservoir Effect (MRE) that varied markedly over time. Between ca. 4000 and 2500 cal BP, the △R values ranged between −50 and + 500 14C years, thus rendering the Loripes shells truly unsuited for independent radiocarbon dating. Extensive geochemical and palaeoecological study of the core and its environment showed that none of the ubiquitous explanations for this highly variable MRE, such as ‘hard water’ or ‘upwelling old seawater’, can be valid. We attribute the phenomenon to the uptake by this lucinid mollusc of ‘old carbon’ from the sediment column into which it had burrowed, released by diagenetic microbial decomposition processes such as methanogenesis. The age of this inorganic carbon varied, being linked to the sedimentation rate: with decreasing sedimentation rate its impact will increase, whereas at high sedimentation rates its impact will likely be minimal. Our results raise serious doubts about the suitability for radiocarbon dating of benthic fauna from shallow coastal environments and point at these diagenetic processes as potentially important sources of ‘old carbon’.

Description: How streaming services and internet distribution have transformed global television culture. Television, once a broadcast medium, now also travels through our telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and wireless networks. It is delivered to viewers via apps, screens large and small, and media players of all kinds. In this unfamiliar environment, new global giants of television distribution are emerging—including Netflix, the world’s largest subscription video-on-demand service. Combining media industry analysis with cultural theory, Ramon Lobato explores the political and policy tensions at the heart of the digital distribution revolution, tracing their longer history through our evolving understanding of media globalization. Netflix Nations considers the ways that subscription video-on-demand services, but most of all Netflix, have irrevocably changed the circulation of media content. It tells the story of how a global video portal interacts with national audiences, markets, and institutions, and what this means for how we understand global media in the internet age. Netflix Nations addresses a fundamental tension in the digital media landscape – the clash between the internet’s capacity for global distribution and the territorial nature of media trade, taste, and regulation. The book also explores the failures and frictions of video-on-demand as experienced by audiences. The actual experience of using video platforms is full of subtle reminders of market boundaries and exclusions: platforms are geo-blocked for out-of-region users (“this video is not available in your region”); catalogs shrink and expand from country to country; prices appear in different currencies; and subtitles and captions are not available in local languages. These conditions offer rich insight for understanding the actual geographies of digital media distribution. Contrary to popular belief, the story of Netflix is not just an American one. From Argentina to Australia, Netflix’s ascension from a Silicon Valley start-up to an international television service has transformed media consumption on a global scale. Netflix Nations will help readers make sense of a complex, ever-shifting streaming media environment.

Description: Erwerbsarbeit dominiert unser Leben.

Description: The European project Multisward ( http://www.multisward.eu/multisward_eng/ ) aims at supporting developments and innovations in grassland use and management in different European farming systems (including low-input and organic farming systems), pedoclimatic and socio-economic conditions i) to enhance the role of grasslands at farm and landscape levels to produce environmental goods and to limit the erosion of biodiversity and ii) to optimise economic, agronomic and nutritional advantages for the development of innovative and sustainable ruminant production systems. The identification of the innovations and their implementation required an exhaustive analysis of the state of grasslands and herbivore production in Europe including how they changed over decades. The effects of public policies were investigated. The results of this analysis are published in the present book.

Description: Bringing together the latest research among various communities of practice (disciplinary and place based as well as thematically organised), this volume reflects upon the knowledge, experience and practice gained through taking a unique community of practice approach to fostering gender equality in the sectors of research and innovation, and higher education in Europe and beyond. Based on research funded by the European Union, it considers how inter-organisational collaboration can foster change for gender equality through sharing of experiences of Gender Equality Plan implementation and examining the role of measures such as change-monitoring systems. As such, it will appeal to social scientists with interests in organisational change, the sociology of work and gender equality.

Description: Mainstream historical accounts of the development of capitalism describe a process which is fundamentally European - a system that was born in the mills and factories of England or under the guillotines of the French Revolution. In this groundbreaking book, a very different story is told. The book offers a unique interdisciplinary and international historical account of the origins of capitalism. It argues that contrary to the dominant wisdom, capitalism’s origins should not be understood as a development confined to the geographically and culturally sealed borders of Europe, but the outcome of a wider array of global processes in which non-European societies played a decisive role. Through an outline of the uneven histories of Mongolian expansion, New World discoveries, Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, the development of the Asian colonies and bourgeois revolutions, the authors provide an account of how these diverse events and processes came together to produce capitalism.
