    Description: This open access book makes a case for extending logic beyond its traditional boundaries, to encompass not only statements but also also questions. The motivations for this extension are examined in detail. It is shown that important notions, including logical answerhood and dependency, emerge as facets of the fundamental notion of entailment once logic is extended to questions, and can therefore be treated with the logician’s toolkit, including model-theoretic constructions and proof systems. After motivating the enterprise, the book describes how classical propositional and predicate logic can be made inquisitive—i.e., extended conservatively with questions—and what the resulting logics look like in terms of meta-theoretic properties and proof systems. Finally, the book discusses the tight connections between inquisitive logic and dependence logic.

    Description: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in exploring the connections between various disciplines of mathematics and theoretical physics such as representation theory, algebraic geometry, quantum field theory, and string theory. One of the challenges of modern mathematical physics is to understand rigorously the idea of quantization. The program of quantization by branes, which comes from string theory, is explored in the book. This open access book provides a detailed description of the geometric approach to the representation theory of the double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA) of rank one. Spherical DAHA is known to arise from the deformation quantization of the moduli space of SL(2,C) flat connections on the punctured torus. The authors demonstrate the study of the topological A-model on this moduli space and establish a correspondence between Lagrangian branes of the A-model and DAHA modules. The finite-dimensional DAHA representations are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the compact Lagrangian branes. Along the way, the authors discover new finite-dimensional indecomposable representations. They proceed to embed the A-model story in an M-theory brane construction, closely related to the one used in the 3d/3d correspondence; as a result, modular tensor categories behind particular finite-dimensional representations with PSL(2,Z) action are identified. The relationship of Coulomb branch geometry and algebras of line operators in 4d N = 2* theories to the double affine Hecke algebra is studied further by using a further connection to the fivebrane system for the class S construction. The book is targeted at experts in mathematical physics, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and string theory. This is an open access book.

    Description: The aim of this work is to integrate the West Slavic languages ​​into grammar and language comparisons using modern grammatical approaches. This is done using the example of the imperative sentence in Slovak with a view to other West Slavic languages. This type of sentence is examined for its formal and content-related characteristics. At the same time, its communicative-pragmatic potential is derived and explained from the structural meaning of this mode verbi. The demarcation between the grammar and the pragmatics of the imperative theorem will play an important role here.
    Description: Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die westslawischen Sprachen unter Anwendung moderner grammatiktheoretischer Ansätze in den Grammatik- und Sprachvergleich zu integrieren. Dies erfolgt am Beispiel des Imperativsatzes im Slowakischen mit Blick auf andere westslawische Sprachen. Dieser Satztyp wird hinsichtlich seiner formalen und inhaltlichen Eigenschaften untersucht. Zugleich wird sein kommunikativ-pragmatisches Potential aus der Strukturbedeutung dieses Modus verbi abgeleitet und erklärt. Dabei wird die Grenzziehung zwischen der Grammatik und der Pragmatik des Imperativsatzes eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

    Description: Die Betrachtung aggregierter Beschäftigungsentwicklungen greift zu kurz, wenn man sich für die Dynamik und die Unterschiedlichkeit betriebsindividueller Beschäftigungsveränderungen interessiert. Für diese Arbeit wurden daher erstmals für die baden-württembergische Industrie und die Jahre 1980 bis 1999 amtliche Betriebsdaten zu einem Betriebspaneldatensatz verknüpft. Ausgehend von einer fundierten Analyse der betrieblichen Arbeitsplatzdynamik werden mögliche betriebsindividuelle, branchenspezifische, aber auch regionale Einflussfaktoren des betrieblichen Beschäftigungswachstums einer empirischen Überprüfung unterzogen. Eine ökonometrische Analyse möglicher Determinanten des Auftretens und insbesondere des Überlebens von neu gegründeten Industriebetrieben rundet die Arbeit ab.

Die Autorin untersucht, welche internen (Standortfaktoren) und externen Rahmenbedingungen (europäische Integration) eine erfolgreiche Anwerbung von Direktinvestitionen ermöglicht haben. Von besonderem Interesse ist, inwieweit andere Mitgliedsländer der EU die Strategie Irlands übernehmen können. Nach der Ermittlung eines theoretischen Analyserahmens wird dieser auf Irland angewendet. Dabei sind die Direktinvestitionszuflüsse durch die regionale Integration zu erklären, jedoch nur in Kombination mit den irischen Besonderheiten. Insbesondere die langfristige Ausrichtung der wirtschaftspolitischen Maßnahmen auf die MNU haben dazu beigetragen.

    Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht der Autor der Frage nach, warum Technik als wesentlicher Bestandteil der Kultur in der Bildung nur eine untergeordnete Bedeutung hat und begründet mit Hilfe technikphilosophischer Analysen einen Kulturreihenansatz für die Auswahl von Inhalten für den Technikunterricht. Aus dem Doppelauftrag von Schule, Persönlichkeitsbildung und Enkulturation wird zunächst ein Interaktionsmodell für Bildung und Erziehung abgeleitet. Das Problem der Inhaltsauswahl jeder Fachdidaktik wird mit einem Modell zur Verknüpfung von Allgemeiner Didaktik und Fachwissenschaften gelöst. Darin wird die Technikphilosophie als fehlende Bezugswissenschaft identifiziert, um Aussagen zum Wesen der Technik zu ermöglichen. Durch die Analyse technikphilosophischer Ansätze wird der Technikbegriff um eine ästhetische und eine Sinn- und Wertperspektive erweitert. Aus diesem Technikbegriff ergeben sich pädagogische Perspektiven für den Technikunterricht, die schließlich über einen Kulturreihenansatz zu einem Kern Technischer Allgemeinbildung führen. Durch den Kulturreihenansatz wird begründet umrissen, wie die kulturelle Bedeutung der Technik bildungswirksam werden kann.

    Description: Kazimierz Moczarski (1907–1975) was a journalist, soldier, and political prisoner. His life exemplifies a Central European biography under Nazism and Comunism. The addictive and moving Civility in Uncivil Times reveals the story of a man who defended law and democracy all his life. Moczarski fought for it in the authoritarian Poland of the 1930s. During the Second World War, he partook in the resistance movement. After the war, he spent eleven years in a Stalinist prison, including nine months in one cell with the Nazi Jürgen Stroop, who commanded the brutal pacification of the Warsaw Ghetto. The communists imprisoned Moczarski’s wife. After release, he rebuilt the broken marriage, rejoined social life, and wrote a work about meeting Stroop. Translated into many languages, Conversations with the Executioner is a thorough study of totalitarianism.

    Description: This book is about making weather warnings more effective in saving lives, property, infrastructure and livelihoods, but the underlying theme of the book is partnership. The book represents the warning process as a pathway linking observations to weather forecasts to hazard forecasts to socio-economic impact forecasts to warning messages to the protective decision, via a set of five bridges that cross the divides between the relevant organisations and areas of expertise. Each bridge represents the communication, translation and interpretation of information as it passes from one area of expertise to another and ultimately to the decision maker, who may be a professional or a member of the public. The authors explore the partnerships upon which each bridge is built, assess the expertise and skills that each partner brings and the challenges of communication between them, and discuss the structures and methods of working that build effective partnerships. The book is ordered according to the “first mile” paradigm in which the decision maker comes first, and then the production chain through the warning and forecast to the observations is considered second. This approach emphasizes the importance of co-design and co-production throughout the warning process. The book is targeted at professionals and trainee professionals with a role in the warning chain, i.e. in weather services, emergency management agencies, disaster risk reduction agencies, risk management sections of infrastructure agencies. This is an open access book.

    Description: This open access book challenges the contemporary relevance of the current model of knowledge production. It argues that the full digitisation of society sharply accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic has added extreme complexity to the world, conclusively exposing the inadequacy of our current model of knowledge creation. Addressing many of the different ways in which reality has been transformed by technology – the pervasive adoption of big data, the fetishisation of algorithms and automation, and the digitalisation of education and research – Viola examines how the rigid conceptualisation in disciplines’ division and competition is complicit of promoting a narrative which has paired computational methods with exactness and neutrality whilst stigmatising consciousness and criticality as carriers of biases and inequality. Taking the humanities as a focal point, the author retraces schisms in the field between the humanities, the digital humanities and critical digital humanities; these are embedded, she argues, within old dichotomies: sciences vs humanities, digital vs non-digital and authentic vs non-authentic. Through the analysis of personal use cases and exploring a variety of applied contexts such as digital heritage practices, digital linguistic injustice, critical digital literacy and critical digital visualisation, the book shows a third way: knowledge creation in the digital.

    Description: This third and last open access volume in the series takes the perspective of non-EU countries on immigrant social protection. By focusing on 12 of the largest sending countries to the EU, the book tackles the issue of the multiple areas of sending state intervention towards migrant populations. Two “mirroring” chapters are dedicated to each of the 12 non-EU states analysed (Argentina, China, Ecuador, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey). One chapter focuses on access to social benefits across five core policy areas (health care, unemployment, old-age pensions, family benefits, guaranteed minimum resources) by discussing the social protection policies that non-EU countries offer to national residents, non-national residents, and non-resident nationals. The second chapter examines the role of key actors (consulates, diaspora institutions and home country ministries and agencies) through which non-EU sending countries respond to the needs of nationals abroad. The volume additionally includes two chapters focusing on the peculiar case of the United Kingdom after the Brexit referendum. Overall, this volume contributes to ongoing debates on migration and the welfare state in Europe by showing how non-EU sending states continue to play a role in third country nationals’ ability to deal with social risks. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, policy makers, government employees and NGO’s.

It presents a revisionist, micro history of the studio and its longevity during a particularly turbulentperiod, explaining Pinewood’s survival at a time when other major film studios such as Denham closed. This book also provides contemporary insights into how Pinewood’s technologies, practices, and filmmaking methods compared to Hollywood’s. Thirteen films produced in1946–47 are analysed in detail, tracking how economic pressures engendered many creative techniques and innovative technologies. Prevailing cultures of management and labour organization are foregrounded, as well as insights into being a studio employee. These are vividly brought to life through an in-depthfocus on the in-house studio magazine Pinewood Merry-Go-Round, which provides rare details of sports and leisure activities organized at the studios.

    Description: The book is a comparative case study of collective memory in two small communities situated on two Central-European borderlands. Despite different pre-war histories, Ukrainian Zhovkva (before 1939 Polish Żółkiew) and Polish Krzyż (before 1945 German Kreuz) were to share a common fate of many European localities, destroyed and rebuilt in a completely new shape. As a result of war, and post-war ethnic cleansing and displacement, they lost almost all of their pre-war inhabitants and were repopulated by new people. Based on more than 150 oral history interviews, the book describes the process of reconstruction of social microcosm, involving the reader in a journey through the lives of real people entangled in the dramatic historical events of the 20th century.

Privileged students benefit from a number of advantages in the competition for selective and scarce places: access to information, lower aversion to debt, higher expectations, better previous schooling and higher academic achievement. The chapters present a critical analysis of equity policies in different countries – with or without affirmative action policies, within a context of neoliberal policies or within a social democratic model – and the reasons why they have failed to promote equity and fairness, preventing students from achieving their full educational potential. The current volume approaches the old problem in a provocative and thoroughly contemporary way. Taking seriously the idea that good reasons are typically probabilistic in character, it develops and defends a new solution that challenges venerable philosophical intuitions and explains why they were mistakenly held. Key to the new solution is the phenomenon of fading foundations, according to which distant reasons are less important than those that are nearby. The phenomenon takes the sting out of Agrippa's Trilemma; moreover, since the theory that describes it is general and abstract, it is readily applicable outside epistemology, notably to debates on infinite regresses in metaphysics. The book is a potential game-changer and a must for any advanced student or researcher in the field.

    Description: This open access book explores the past and present of Quanzhou (Zayton) and the rich diversity and tolerance that kindled Quanzhou’s innovativeness and helped it prosper both commercially and culturally—values that are today being embraced by China’s global trade partners. Quanzhou (Zayton), Marco Polo’s port of departure and Columbus’ goal in China, was not only the start of the Maritime Silk Road and the Middle Age’s greatest port but also centuries ahead of its time in its tolerance and diversity. The fabled “City of Light” had 7 mosques for its 40,000 Muslims, some of whom served in government, as well as 3 Franciscan cathedrals funded in part by the emperor, Jewish synagogues, and centers for Nestorian Christians, Hindus, Taoists, Manicheans, Jains, etc. As Franciscan Bishop Andrew of Perugia wrote in 1322, “Tis a fact that in this vast empire, there are people of every nation under heaven, and every sect, and all and sundry are allowed to live freely according to their creed.” In 2021, UNESCO designated “Quanzhou, Emporium of the World,” as a world heritage site, and the city is now the hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, the 21st Century Silk Road, which was inspired by ancient Quanzhou.

The model is based on stochastic purchase and switching probabilities, given certain conditions like prices and supportive marketing activities (like delivery time or shop environment). A company can fit its consumer base to the model and simulate various effects on its earnings by altering prices or marketing activities. The model is a market-based playground to develop new holistic strategies for a multichannel company without affecting the market.

    Description: The work consists of two parts. The first part deals exclusively with the aspect properties of Russian prefigured verbs. A perfective analysis for Russian is proposed, which allows to grasp the semantic differences between imperfective Simplizia and its derivative derivatives in semantic terms. The second part of the thesis is an application of the proposed perfective analysis to Russian pere-prefixed verbs. It is shown that the meaning variants of pere-prefixed verbs in Russian can be derived from a general prefix scheme and the semantics of the stem verb.
    Description: Die Arbeit besteht aus zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil befaßt sich ausschließlich mit den aspektuellen Eigenschaften russischer präfigierter Verben. Es wird eine Perfektivanalyse für das Russische vorgeschlagen, die es ermöglicht, die semantischen Unterschiede zwischen imperfektiven Simplizia und ihren perfektiven Derivata in semantischen Termen zu erfassen. Sie wird vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend (BMFSFJ) gefördert und gemeinsam vom Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health (ceres) und dem Deutschen Zentrum für Altersfragen (DZA) durchgeführt. While the most successful ML models, including Deep Neural Networks (DNN), have developed better predictivity, they have become increasingly complex, at the expense of human interpretability (correlation vs. causality). The field of explainable AI (xAI) has emerged with the goal of creating tools and models that are both predictive and interpretable and understandable for humans. Explainable AI is receiving huge interest in the machine learning and AI research communities, across academia, industry, and government, and there is now an excellent opportunity to push towards successful explainable AI applications. This volume will help the research community to accelerate this process, to promote a more systematic use of explainable AI to improve models in diverse applications, and ultimately to better understand how current explainable AI methods need to be improved and what kind of theory of explainable AI is needed. After overviews of current methods and challenges, the editors include chapters that describe new developments in explainable AI. The contributions are from leading researchers in the field, drawn from both academia and industry, and many of the chapters take a clear interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. The concepts discussed include explainability, causability, and AI interfaces with humans, and the applications include image processing, natural language, law, fairness, and climate science.

    Description: This open access book is the first ever collection of Karl Popper's writings on deductive logic. Karl R. Popper (1902-1994) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. His philosophy of science ("falsificationism") and his social and political philosophy ("open society") have been widely discussed way beyond academic philosophy. What is not so well known is that Popper also produced a considerable work on the foundations of deductive logic, most of it published at the end of the 1940s as articles at scattered places. This little-known work deserves to be known better, as it is highly significant for modern proof-theoretic semantics. This collection assembles Popper's published writings on deductive logic in a single volume, together with all reviews of these papers. It also contains a large amount of unpublished material from the Popper Archives, including Popper's correspondence related to deductive logic and manuscripts that were (almost) finished, but did not reach the publication stage. All of these items are critically edited with additional comments by the editors. A general introduction puts Popper's work into the context of current discussions on the foundations of logic. This book should be of interest to logicians, philosophers, and anybody concerned with Popper's work.

    Description: Germany has gradually become Europe's largest immigration country and is increasingly shaped by the image of a multicultural and multilingual society. However, the issue of multilingualism receives little attention, especially with regard to Slavic migration idioms. The aim of the present study is the empirical investigation of the current language behavior of Slavophone immigrants and the determination of the vitality of their native languages. On the basis of a nationwide survey of 500 immigrants detailed microsociological data on the use of Slavic languages ​​depending on persons, topics and situations will be collected and the influence of linguistic ecological factors such as attitudes, motivations, identity and social network of speakers on language use and language content will be investigated. In addition, on the basis of interdisciplinary approaches to the description of linguistic minorities, the vitality of slavins is analyzed comparatively, showing the current situation and the future development of Slavia in Germany in general and specific tendencies of ethnolects in particular.
    Description: Deutschland hat sich sukzessive zum größten Einwanderungsland Europas entwickelt und wird immer stärker vom Bild einer multikulturellen und multilingualen Gesellschaft geprägt. Dem Thema Mehrsprachigkeit aber wird insbesondere in Bezug auf slavische Migrationsidiome nur wenig Beachtung geschenkt. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die empirische Erforschung des aktuellen Sprachverhaltens slavophoner Immigranten und die Bestimmung der Vitalität ihrer Muttersprachen. Anhand einer deutschlandweiten Enquete unter 500 Zuwanderern werden detaillierte mikrosoziologische Daten zum Gebrauch der slavischen Sprachen in Abhängigkeit von Personen, Themen und Situationen erhoben und der Einfluss sprachökologischer Faktoren wie Attitüden, Motivationen, Identität und soziales Netzwerk der Sprecher auf die Sprachverwendung und den Spracherhalt untersucht. Zudem wird auf der Grundlage interdisziplinärer Ansätze zur Beschreibung von Sprachminderheiten die Vitalität der Slavinen komparativ analysiert, womit die gegenwärtige Situation und die zukünftige Entwicklung der Slavia in Deutschland im Allgemeinen und spezifische Tendenzen der Ethnolekte im Besonderen aufgezeigt werden.

Diese Fragestellung wird nicht aus einer institutionen- und schulsoziologischen, sondern aus einer lerntheoretischen und politikdidaktischen Perspektive entwickelt. Der Analysefokus richtet sich damit auf die Frage, wie subjektorientierte Lernprozesse in einer Gesellschaft strukturiert werden können, die durch spezifische soziale Verhältnisse geprägt ist. Das Kernanliegen der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in der Erschließung der Gedankenwelt Antonio Gramscis für die aktuelle lerntheoretische und politikdidaktische Debatte. Dabei soll der Nachweis der analytischen Ergiebigkeit zentraler Kategorien aus den Schriften Antonio Gramscis, insbesondere der Hegemonie und des Alltagsverstandes, über den Weg einer systematischen Reflexion einschlägiger Sinnbildkonstruktionen geführt werden, denen in der aktuellen Fachdebatte eine zentrale Bedeutung zukommt. Aus einer hegemonietheoretisch gestützten konstruktiven Kritik der Sinnbildkonstruktionen werden Schlussfolgerungen für eine Theorie von Bildungs- und Lernprozessen gezogen, die sich in den Kontext der kritischen politischen Bildung einordnen lassen.

    Description: This open access book presents a number of case studies on digital transformation in Norway, one of the fore-runners in the digital progress index established by the European Commission in 2020. They explore the process of adoption, diffusion and value generation from digital technologies, and how the use of different digital solutions has enabled Norwegian enterprises to digitally transform their operations and business models. The book starts with an introductory chapter summarizing a vast body of literature in order to synthesize what is already known about digital transformation before exploring the Norwegian context in more detail. Then a series of case studies from the private and public sector in Norway is presented. They document a process perspective which describes the sequence of events during and after adoption of digital solutions, as well as the types of business value that were realized. Through these single studies, the process of digital transformation is illustrated, a number of key findings highlighted, and eventually theoretical and practical recommendations based on these cases emphasized. The book closes with a brief overview of some emerging technologies, and comments on how they are likely to change different sectors. Digital transformation has been one of the priority areas for the Norwegian government over the past years and puts Norwegian enterprises upfront in adopting novel technologies and utilizing them for achieving organizational goals. This experience accumulated over the years makes the Norwegian context a particularly interesting one in understanding how private and public organizations make use of new digital solutions, what lessons can be learnt during the process, and what are some of the key success and failure factors.     Description: Ausgelöst durch zahlreiche Unternehmenskrisen wird seit Beginn der 90er Jahre in der Corporate Governance-Diskussion die Funktionsfähigkeit des deutschen Aufsichtsratssystems in Frage gestellt. Der Gesetzgeber reagierte hierauf zunächst mit dem KonTraG und zuletzt mit dem TransPuG. 〈BR〉 Der Autor entwickelt aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Perspektive Gestaltungsvorschläge, die zu einer Funktionsverbesserung des Aufsichtsrats beitragen. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der juristischen Rahmenbedingungen zeigt der Autor, daß ein wesentlicher Teil der Aufsichtsratsaufgaben zukunftsbezogen ist. Zur Erfüllung dieser Aufgaben sollten Aktiengesellschaften daher über ein Aufsichtsratsplanungssystem verfügen, das die Aufsichtsratsmitglieder umfassend unterstützt. Es wird ein theoretisch fundiertes Gesamtsystem entwickelt, das sich durch hohe praktische Umsetzbarkeit auszeichnet. Zur Förderung der notwendigen Professionalisierung des Aufsichtsrats wird außerdem ein wertorientiertes Anreizsystem gestaltet, das das Planungssystem ergänzen muß.
