Description: This study corresponds to the cruise around the Galapagos Islands carried out by the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy in August 2000. The purpose was to understand, quantitatively and qualitatively, the ecological dynamics of the phytoplankton during the dry season. The chlorophyll "a" data from surface waters registered high concentrations (0.87 - 2.18 mg/m3) southwest off the Galapagos Islands, reflecting upwelling processes. Sub-surface-water values were higher southward, while the lowest values were found to the north. Nuclei of high chlorophyll "a" content were found to the southwest of the Galapagos (10 m), and to the southeast (40-50 m). The cellular biomass was represented by P. delicatissima, species responsible for the high fertility in the center of the upwelling area and to the southwest and south off the Galapagos, Thalassiosira subtilis and Gymnodinium sp. were dominant to the east. The incidence of the Cromwell Current was accented toward 91° and 92°W; toward 89°W different conditions were shown, probably associated to the influence of the Humboldt Current. The biomass in 55µm mesh size fraction was dominated by P. delicatissima (0 m); P. delicatissima, C. compresus and C. curvisetus ( 0 - 50 m). C. tripos and G. polyedra, warm water species dominated to the north off the Galapagos in surface waters, while in sub-surface waters these species dominated to the southeast. This atypical behaviour was observed during the cruise of May 2000, when upwelling conditions were not evident.

Description: This research is part of an environmental monitoring of plankton and its physical and chemical response around the platform located offshore Campo Amistad, near Santa Clara Island, southeast of the Gulf in external Guayaquil. The study was carried out between july 30 and augut 31-2001, onboard the R/V Orión of the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The chlorophyll "a" biomass presented values between 0.6 and 1.52 mg/m3 in surface waters, with averages of 1.07 to 0.99 mg/m3 (10 m), 0.79 (20 m) and 0.58 (30 m) mg/m3. The larger amounts of biomass and daily variability were found in the northern part of the platform, while the opposite trend was observed in its western area. One hundred and three phytoplankton species were identified, with dominance of centric diatoms of mainly Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus. Dinoflagellates presented high diversity and low biomass; Ceratium dens was the dominant species, characterizing influences of external water masses in the estuary. The zooplankton fauna was represented by 28 groups, with dominance of cladocera and copepods; the highest density of organisms was found around the 17h00 hours. High density of Cladocera presented a strong positive relationship to phytoplankton abundance, and a negative correlation to copepod abundance. The environmental conditions in the surface thermal structure were almost stable, with an average of 22.5°C. The lowest temperatures were found southwest of the platform (subsurface), coincident with a slight increase in nutrients (nitrate and silicate). The marine biota associated with these environmental conditions presented high diversity, implying the absence of eutrophication incidence in the estuary area of the platform.

Description: The present work includes/understands the study of the qualitative and quantitative temporary variability of the phytoplankton, zooplankton and ichthyoplankton in the shores of the Santay Island, of the Province of the Guayas. For the effect 16 samples, obtained during november of the 2000 and january of the 2002 were analyzed. 38 species of phytoplankton in water samples and 51 species in network samples were identified (50u). The diatoms were dominant and in smaller concentration the dinoflagellates ones, cianobacterys, silicoflagellates, and tintinides. The cellular biomass was represented mainly by Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata and Coscinodiscus excentricus, species that were abundant in the study area. In network samples species were observed estuarys and benthicas: Actinoptychus senarius, Coscinodiscus excentricus, C. concinnus, Polymixus coronalis, Cyclotella menenghiniana, characteristic of a high fertility. During year 2000 a smaller zooplanctónica biomass with a variability in the abundance of the main groups of zooplancton appeared, standing out the dominant group the Larvae of Fish and represented by the sort Anchovy sp. and its temporary abundance is influenced mainly by the seasonal time, physical factors and states of tides. Wheres during year 2002 a greater zooplanctónica biomass was observed and greater diversity of species, this biomass was represented mainly by microcrustaceans such as Nauplios of cirripedios, Copépodos, Zoeas of brachiuras, Copépodos, Larvae of fish and Larvae of poliquetos, in comparison with year 2000. The abundance of a fraction of some groups of zooplankton pertaining to meroplancton is an index that mainly characterizes productive areas by the presence of larval estadíos of crustaceans and fish.

Description: This study was carried out during December 2000, onboard the R/V Orion of the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The objetive was to establish the relationship between chlorophyll "a" content and the abundance of species or groups of species of micro-algae inside a region with ocean-climate system variability in the Tropical Pacific Ocean along the Ecuadorian coast. The highest chlorophyll content was found between 1°3 S and 3°S, with a positive correlation to the cellular biomass, including species of phytoplankton such as Rhizosolenia stoltherfothi, Thalassiosira subtiles, Pseudonitzschia delicatissima, P. longissima, Leptocylindrus danicus, Gymnodinium sp., y Messodinium rubrum. However, the biomass calculated from the content of the 55 µm mesh size was dominated by Rhizosolenia imbricata, T. subtiles, Chaetoceros affinis, L. danicus, Chaetoceros curvisetus. The dinoflagellates showed concentrations of species that characterized zones of warm water masses (Protoperidinium crassipes, Gonyaulax polyedra, Dinophysis caudata towards the NE, and C. tripos, G. polyedricum, C. furca towards the SE of the study area). The phytoplankton distribution did not reflect the position of the Equatorial Front, determined as an almost zonal phenomenon with a weak surface thermal gradient (23-25°C). The high abundances of M. rubrum and Gymnodinium sp., might have been related to the influence of the cold Humboldt Current and this may have produced some "red tide" events towards the coastal margin.
