Description: This book is a Printed Edition of the Special Issue that covers research on symmetric and asymmetric data that occur in real-life problems. We invited authors to submit their theoretical or experimental research to present engineering and economic problem solution models that deal with symmetry or asymmetry of different data types. The Special Issue gained interest in the research community and received many submissions. After rigorous scientific evaluation by editors and reviewers, seventeen papers were accepted and published. The authors proposed different solution models, mainly covering uncertain data in multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problems as complex tools to balance the symmetry between goals, risks, and constraints to cope with the complicated problems in engineering or management. Therefore, we invite researchers interested in the topics to read the papers provided in the book.

Description: Symmetry has a central role in the study of vision. The concept of symmetry has an ancient origin in considerations of visual appearance; in modern times, abstracted and formalized into Group Theory, it has found spectacular applications, far beyond the visible; but its importance for vision persists in many ways including: • As a non-accidental feature of an image that cues affordances, 3D structure or the semantic categories of object present. • As a redundant aspect of an image which many be exploited for simplicity and compactness of encoding. • As a salient feature that draws attention, and evokes distinctive brain responses. • As a constraint on priors on the distribution of structures to be found in the natural world. • As an aesthetic principle. • As a design principle for vision systems. • The original idea for a Special Issue came from a symposium at the European Conference in Visual Perception, in 2015, on the topic of brain responses to visual symmetry, but we have now extended the scope. This Special Issue is devoted to provide a shared place for cutting edge studies on how and why symmetry is processed and exploited by biological and artificial visual systems.

Description: We study the liquid-crystalline phase behavior of a concentrated suspension of helical flagella isolated from Salmonella typhimurium. Flagella are prepared with different polymorphic states, some of which have a pronounced helical character while others assume a rodlike shape. We show that the static phase behavior and dynamics of chiral helices are very different when compared to simpler achiral hard rods. With increasing concentration, helical flagella undergo an entropy-driven first order phase transition to a liquid-crystalline state having a novel chiral symmetry.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a method of coding and generating infinite classes of comlex periodic geometric pattern found in various cultures. The method uses a pattern code for the known symmetry groups and is based on the infinite classes of subdivisions of the fundamental regions of each symmetry group. The subdivisions provide a skeletal grid from which selected point, line or polygonal sequences can be extracted to produce an infinite variety of geometric patternswithin a symmetry group. Surprisingly, many complex architectural patterns from different periods and cultures, notably those from historic Islamic buildings, and Chinese window lattices, can be systematically obtained by this method. The pattern-codes provide a basis for generation of simple and complex geometric patterns, and their transformation from one to another. Some directions for systematic transformations based on meta-structural principles are outlined.

Notes: Abstract Chaos theory involves the study of how complicated behavior can arise in systems which are based on simple rules, and how minute changes in the input of a system can lead to large differences in the output. In this paper, bifurcation maps of the equationX t+1=λX t [1+X t ]−β are presented, and they reveal a visually striking and intricate class of patterns ranging from stable points, to a bifurcating hierarchy of stable cycles, to apparently random fluctuations.

Notes: Abstract Exact algorithms for detecting all rotational and involutional symmetries in point sets, polygons and polyhedra are described. The time complexities of the algorithms are shown to be θ (n) for polygons and θ (n logn) for two- and three-dimensional point sets. θ (n logn) time is also required for general polyhedra, but for polyhedra with connected, planar surface graphs θ (n) time can be achieved. All algorithms are optimal in time complexity, within constants.
