    Description: A zonal geopotential is presented to degree 21 from evaluation of mean elements for 21 satellites, including two of low (less than 20 deg) inclination. Each satellite is represented by an arc of at least one apsidal rotation. The lengths range from 50 to 660 days. Differential correction of the initial elements in all of the arcs, together with radiation pressure and atmospheric drag coefficients, is accomplished simultaneously with the correction for the zonal harmonics. The satellite orbits and their variations are generated by numerical integration of the Lagrange equations for mean elements. Disturbances due to precession and nutation, atmospheric drag, radiation pressure, and lunisolar gravity are added at 1- to 8-day intervals in the integrated orbits.

    Description: Brightnesses measured by the Pioneer 10 imaging photopolarimeter in two regions of sky were compared on sky maps at sun-spacecraft distances from 2.4 to 4.8 AU to determine the spatial extent of the zodiacal light. Data in the ecliptic at elongations greater than 90 deg show negligible contribution to the zodiacal light beyond 3.3 AU, the 2:1 Jupiter resonance. The zodiacal light brightness at 2.4 AU is less than 10% of that observed at 1 AU.

    Description: The abundances of zirconium and hafnium have been determined in nine stony meteorites by a new, precise neutron-activation technique. The Zr/Hf abundance ratios for the chondrites vary in a rather narrow range, consistent with previously published observations from our group. Replicate analyses of new, carefully selected clean interior samples of the Cl chondrite Orgueil yield mean zirconium and hafnium abundances of 5.2 and 0.10 ppm, respectively. These abundances are lower than we reported earlier for two Cl chondrite samples which we now suspect may have suffered contamination. The new Cl zirconium and hafnium abundances are in closer agreement with predictions based on theories of nucleosynthesis than the earlier data.

    Description: A new rapid and precise analytical procedure for Zr and Hf has been applied to the study of lunar materials. The results indicate that the Zr/Hf ratios in lunar materials vary in a narrow range from 36.6 to 51.3 while their respective contents vary by a factor of 40. There is a strong Zr, Hf, and major element correlation. This correlation and the Zr and Hf systematics suggest that lunar materials fall into two groups. One group characterized by high Zr and Hf contents and higher Zr/Hf ratios corresponds to materials with a high KREEP content; the other characterized by low Zr and Hf contents and lower Zr/Hf ratios corresponds to materials with high Ti, Fe, Mn, and Mg contents. We believe that the modest Zr and Hf fractionation we observe is related to the extent of stabilization of the metals in the early titanium minerals and a charge disparity under extremely reduced conditions in which Zr exists as 3+, while Hf remains as 4+.

    Description: The discovery of Zeeman effects is reported in HD 77581 and theta super 2 Orionis, optical candidates for the X-ray sources Vela XR-1 and 2U 0525-06, respectively. The maximum longitudinal magnetic fields recorded were -10,000 G in HD 77581 and +1500 G in theta super 2 Ori. Various polarimetric data are also given, including evidence for a variable linear polarization in HD 77581.

    Description: Two streams previously listed (one of them with a classification on Ceplecha's system in terms of beginning height) by Cook are shown probably not to exist, a possibility already pointed out by Cook. One stream that he questioned was revised as to membership and then classified. Four streams are added to the list and one of these is classified. Previous reports exist for three of these streams, while one is new. The two Piscid streams of Lindblad and his alpha Triangulid stream are regrouped into two streams, one already called the Andromedids by Cook and the other still called the Piscids; the alpha Triangulids are absorbed into the Andromedids. The Piscids are classified along with the iota Aquarids. The classifications of the Taurids and the Andromedids remain unchanged.

    Description: A table showing the relative amounts of xenon isotopes in carbonaceous chondrites is presented. It is found that the enrichment of heavy xenon isotopes released from carbonaceous chondrites in the approximate temperature range from 600 to 1000 C is accompanied by an enrichment of the light xenon isotopes. The high degree of correlation between these two isotopic anomalies suggests that both result from a common source. There is no known nuclear or physical process which could produce both anomalies in situ. It is, therefore, suggested that the anomalies are the result of the release of isotopically anomalous xenon which was trapped in the meteorites.
