    Notizen: Liquid SO2 sealed into tubes made of a fluorocarbon copolymer permeates the walls of the tube at a temperature-dependent but accurately reproducible rate. Sulfur dioxide dispensers made in this way are called permeation tubes and are useful for calibrating instruments that measure SO2 concentrations in air. The National Bureau of Standards calibrates SO2 permeation tubes and makes them available as Standard Reference Materials. The permeation rate in a batch of nominally identical tubes varies enough that each Standard Reference Material tube must be individually calibrated. Changes in the length or radial dimensions of the tubes are much too small to explain most of this variation. An excellent (negative) correlation is found between the measured permeation rate and the density of the polymer (or weight per unit length). Since both the measured density and the permeation rate for this semi-crystalline polymer depend upon morphological factors, but in different ways, x-ray diffraction measurements of the thickness and orientation of the lamellar crystals were made and a mathematical model was set up to identify the morphological factors which can cause variations in the permeation rate.

    Notizen: A theory for roll coating of a fluid onto a moving sheet is developed utilizing the usual “lubrication approximations.” The effects of fluid and operating parameters on coating thickness and pressure distribution are determined for a Newtonian fluid, and for a purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid obeying the Power Law. The results for these cases are obtained analytically, and are rather straightforward.A viscoelastic fluid is considered, of a type which shows typical non-Newtonian shear behavior observed in polymer melts and solutions and which also exhibits normal stress behavior. Analytical solutions are not possible, but a perturbation method, using a viscoelastic perturbation parameter related to a Deborah number, yields an approximate solution. Only terms to first order in the perturbation parameter are given. Subject to that degree of approximation, the following conclusions are drawn: 1Non-Newtonian shear behavior reduces the pressure distribution, and increases the coating thickness.1Elasticity of the type usually observed in polymer solutions makes only a minor contribution to the roll-separating (load-carrying) force. The contribution is positive, but smaller than the corresponding negative contribution due to the non-Newtonian shear effects.1An increase in load-carrying capacity would require a different viscoelastic fluid than the type considered here - one that is essentially Newtonian in shear but, independently, capable of developing significant normal stresses.

    Notizen: There are two distinct solid conveying theories that can be applied to plasticating screw extruders. One is Darnell and Mol's theory based on a solid-to-solid friction model and the other is Chung's theory based on a viscous shearing model. The two theories predict very different solid conveying performances for a same set of conditions. In this paper, the maximum pressures that can be developed inside plasticating screw extruders by the solid conveying force are calculated using each of the two theories. Comparison of the results may shed some light on the applicability of each theory for a particular extrusion operation.

    Notizen: The mechanical properties of a propylene-ethylene copolymer resin depend strongly on the mold temperature employed during injection molding. Average spherulite size correlates well with most physical properties; good impact properties are related to small average size, and high heat distortion temperatures to large average size. Tensile specimens have three distinct regions when viewed through crossed polars. The outer region (Region 1) does not contain spherulites, but Regions 2 and 3 do. The largest spherulites are found in Region 3, the center of the specimen. Region 1 has a molecular weight higher than that of the other two regions.

    Notizen: During the last several years there has been considerable interest in the occurrence of structure in certain bulk polymers normally thought to be structurally homogeneous. Specifically, it has been proposed that polymers produced by emulsion polymerization may retain a particle structure in the bulk state. This has been demonstrated by both rheological measurements and by electron microscopy. In this work we show conclusively that at least part of the particle structure observed by electron microscopy for polystyrene is an intrinsic feature of the fracture surface and is in no way related to the history of the sample.

    Notizen: Mold flows and melt viscosities of an incompatible bi-component EPDM and “Viton” fluoroelastormer system were examined. A marked reduction in the melt viscosities of either component was observed when a small amount of the other component was present. It was speculated that the phenomenon was a result of a slippage between the polymer and the coated capillary surface due to the presence of a minor amount of the incompatible polymer. Evidence is given to indicate that this effect cannot be accounted for using the “melt structural heterogeneity” mechanism proposed for a different system by Andtrianova.

    Notizen: The Part I paper described the mechanochemical basis for achieving high adhesive strength in bonds between polymeric surfaces such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and Teflon, using the SABRA method (Surface Activation Beneath Reactive Adhesives). This paper gives a brief survey of bonding techniques as well as results of shear tests of simple lap joints and scarfed tube joints. They compared favorably with other methods such as CASING, Peeling test results are also presented. Mixed systems were examined such as glass fiber reinforced polyester bonded to polypropylene and aluminum with thin films of polymeric material sandwiched between. A start was made towards of optimization and exploration of primer specificity for different materials, The implications and further applications of the SABRA method are discussed.

    Notizen: Various blends over extended compositional ranges have beer, prepared for combinations of a thermoplastic urethane elastomer with polystyrene, a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, a polyhydroxyether (Phenoxy A), and poly(vinyl ethyl ether). The thermoplastic urethane elastomer was based on a polycaprolactone diol of approximately 2100 number average molecular weight, 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol at a molar ratio of 1/2/1, respectively. At ambient temperature, the tensile properties of the blends typically are intermediate between the values of the two separate components. Characterizations of the dynamic mechanical properties of the blends show the relative degree of compatibility for the thermoplastic urethane elastomer and the respective polymers. Two separate glass transitions are obtained for blends of polystyrene and the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer with the thermoplastic urethane elastomer. This behavior demonstrates that these blend systems are incompatible. The blends of Phenoxy A and the thermoplastic urethane elastomer exhibit a single glass transition for which the temperature is dependent on the respective concentration of the components. These mixtures are considered to be compatible in nature.

    Notizen: A new type of extrusion rheometer has been designed which employs dual slit geometry with a double valve. The double valve concept allows a change in flow rates through the slits, while the total extruder flow rate remains constant thus leaving extruder operating conditions unchanged. Electronic pressure transducers are mounted along the slit to record axial pressure distribution. Flow rates are measured by weighing polymer output and wall shear stresses are calculated from the axial pressure profiles. Exit pressures are derived from extrapolating the pressure profile to the slit exit and from this information the normal stresses can be determined.

Viscosity was found to be independent of shear rate up to at least 102 N.s/m2 (103 poise) and 30s-1. Extent of reaction was monitored by a periodic titration for isocyanate groups. Using branching theory, viscosity was related to extent of reaction and temperature. Such relations should be useful for process models. Normal force data for the curing system are also reported.

    Notizen: Melt How data has been determined for a series of fractionated and whole low density polyethylenes which has been characterized in terms of their molecular weights and degree of long-chain branching, (LCB). The resulting data indicate that low LCB influences melt flow both through a reduction in molecular size and an increased level of intermolecular interaction. Die swell measurements on whole polymers indicate an increase in melt elasticity with increase in degree of LCB for samples of similar melt flow (MI). Comparison of GPC data with observed die swell characteristics indicates that die swell is a molecular size dependent property and independent of intermolecular entanglement effects, suggesting that the measurement of elastic properties of LDPE melts will provide a means of determining relative degrees of LCB for commercial resins.

    Notizen: The theory of deep drawing, which has been developed for metals, is examined critically for thermoplastics. Two special characteristics of thermoplastics, the strong orientation hardening after initial yielding and the ease of crack formation and growth, are shown to vitiate the usual correlation between the drawability of the sheet and the low strain plastic behavior of the material. Attempts to improve the limiting draw ratio of thermoplastics, by biaxially rolling sheet prior to forming, are shown to be effective only if the polymer does not craze easily under tensile stresses.

    Notizen: This new coupling agent shows promise for use in reinforcing hydrocarbon type polymers, such as polyolefins and polystyrene, with glass fibers and inexpensive mineral fillers. Sulfonyl azide derivatives readily form durable bonds to many thermoplastics at normal extrusion and molding temperatures, without the use of peroxide or sulfur-type curing agents. Alkoxy silanes, attached to the sulfonyl azide, hydrolyze in the known manner forming bonds to inorganic fillers. Using commercial compounding and injection molding procedures, 40 wt percent of mineral fillers containing 1 percentofan azidosilane coupling agent were incorporated in polypropylene. Very substantial improvements in tensile, flexural and heat distortion properties were obtained with little loss in impact strength. An initial evaluation in a filled polystyrene showed significant, but less dramatic, improvements.

    Notizen: A significant advance in ion exchange resin and adsorbent technology has been the development of the macroreticular pore structure. Synthetic rotes have been developed for preparing both ion exchange resins and polymeric adsorbents of high surface area and pore volume. Syntheses have been developed to the degree that the surface area and pore.parameters can be widely varied. Several of these macroreticular polymers based upon the crosslinked styrene and acrylate systems are now available commercially. These polymeric adsorbents are hard, durable, insoluble spheres of high surface area and porosity. They are available in a variety of polarities. The nonpolar adsorbents are particularly effective for adsorbing nonpolar solutes from polar solvents. Conversely, the polar adsorbents are very effective for adsorbing polar solutes from nonpolar solvents. Of particular interest is the use of these polymeric adsorbents for the treatment of effluent wastes. In some cases it has been demonstrated that one can recover significant quantities of re-usable chemicals that more than pay for the waste, treatment. The use of the polymeric adsorbents for the treatment of phenolicwastes is an example. Other related applications include the removal of chlorinated pesticides, TNT residues, and other noxious compounds from waste effluents and water supplies.

    Notizen: Prior studies of two series of segmented polyurethanes based on 2, 4 toluene cliisocyanate (2, 4 TDI) or 2, 8 TDI, butanediol, and a 1000 molecular weight polytetramethyleneoxide (PTMO-1000) soft segment revealed a rapid increase in soft segment glass transition temperature (Tg) with increasing urethane content in the 2, 4 TDI series. The change in Tg couldbe correlated with estimates of hard segment-soft segment phase mixing obtained by infrared analysis of the urethane NH and carbonyl bands. In the present paper, the infrared data have been reevaluated using improved procedures for resolving the carbonyl band into H-bonded and nonbonded components, and the relation between the estimated extent of phase mixing and Tg has been reexamined. The transition behavior in an extensive series of related polymers has also been determined, including 2, 4 TDI arid 2, 6 TDI samples with PTMO2000 as well as polybutyleneadipate (PBA-1000 and PBA-2000) soft segments. The results indicate the effectiveness, of increased soft segment molecular weight in promoting phase segregation, imply that much greater phase mixing occurs in polyester than polyether samples, suggest that anchoring the ends of the soft segments has only a small effect on Tg, and provide some evidence that H-bonding not only increases Tg but can also impede soft segment crystallization.

    Notizen: During the injection molding process, moldings undergo shear and elongational stresses. They are also exposed to thermal gradients of varying intensity. Invariably, molded parts, or at least some sections thereof, freeze before the polymer chains can relax to a random, non-oriented configuration. As a result, injection molded parts contain frozen strains and exhibit anisotropic physical properties. In the present work, a variety of experimental techniques have been employed to determine the three-dimensional variation of the following properties of injection-molded, thermoplastic, rectangular parts: density, heat shrinkage, birefringence, and tensile strength.

    Notizen: Chemorheological changes in epoxy resins subjected to large strains while heated were observed earlier, but the subject was not treated quantitatively. This paper describes the investigation of an epoxy resin - Epon 826, of known chemical, structure, crosslinked with two different amines. By means of a simple calibrated apparatus, the epoxide samples were subjected to large strains in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and in air. They were heated to different temperatures for various times; the results were compared with data obtained from unstrained samples kept in otherwise the same conditions. The results show a linear-logarithmic relation between the torsion modulus, G(10) and the time of applied strain at a certain temperature and also a linear relation between G(10), and 1/T°K, both above T(10). The results obtained in swelling experiments support the data from 10 sec torsional modulus vs temperature measurements. An increase in the amount of solubles and in Mc is observed on extending the time of heating. A clear difference in properties between the strained and unstrained samples, kept in otherwise the sane conditions, is observed and the contribution of the applied strain to chemorheology has been shown. Both systems of crosslinked Epon 826 showed the same general behavior, although the specific data were different.

    Notizen: The rate of vapor-development of poly(olefin sulfones) subjected to electron beam irradiation is markedly, dependent upon the olefin structure. At room temperature, poly(butene-1sulfone) and poly(cyclopentene sulfone) vapor-develop at rates several orders of magnitude lower than, for example, poly(2-methyl pentene-1 sulfone). Differences in vapor development rate for the various sulfones are shown to be related to differing rates of depolymerization which, in turn, are related to differences in ceiling temperatures for polymer formation. Kinetic analysis indicates that the mechanism involves random scission followed by depropagation and bimolecular termination.

    Notizen: The properties of mixtures of poly(2, 6-dimethyl p-phenylene oxide) and poly(styrene) have been measured by DSC, density gradient, dynamic mechanical response, and tensile testing. The mixtures are found to have single glass trasitions that vary continuously with the composition. They also have small negative excess volumes of mixing, indicative of strong polymerpolymer interaction. The dynamic mechanical response of the mixtures shows that the low temperature secondary relaxations are suppressed whereas those at high temperatures are enhanced. These observations imply that mixing on the segmental levc l has occurred. A plot of tensile strength vs composition at different strain rates reveals two regions of failure behavior. The high PS, high strain rate region is brittle, and the high PM2PO, low strain rate region is ductile. When the tensile yield data are treated according to the Ree-Eyring equation, the addition of PS to PM2PO is found to reduce the flow volum, e of the mixture. The overall effect on mechanical properties of adding small amounts of one component to the other is similar to that of anti-plasticization. Our experimental observations are consistent with the shifting of the relaxation mechanisms to longer times due to the negative excess volume of mixing.

Coherence eliminates conversion factors, other than powers of ten, within the system. Through simplification, only seven base units, two supplementary units, seventeen named derived units, and sixteen prefixes are needed to describe the entire system. Promotion of the newton as a unit of force and retention of the kilogram for mass clarifies the difference between the two quantities. New units are: pascal for pressure, siemens for electric conductance, and mole for amount of a substance. International agreement minimizes proliferation of specialized units or usage. Adopted conventions include spelling, abbreviations, style, and usage, as well as definitions for the units. Toleranceg, rounding of numbers, and elimination of the comma in multidigit numbers assume new significance. Conversion to SI offers a unique opportunity to reduce the number of sizes of many products. Several schemes for metric modularism have been developed for this purpose. In changing from conventional tip SI units, the key idea is “think metric” rather than use dual dimensioning.

    Notizen: Fatigue tests in reversed tension-compression have been carried out on samples of polyethylene and polystyrene of widely varying molecular weights, extending up to 2, 000, 000. All tests on polystyrene specimens were made at 1600 rpm. For polyethylene, tests speeds had to be reduced to 100 rpm in order to avoid serious temperature effects. For both materials, increasing molecular weight leads to improved resistance to alternating loading. For polystyrene, this improvement in ultimate properties even continued well beyond molecular weight values where Tg, becomes effectively independent of molecular weight. For polyethylene, samples of high molecular weight did not fail even after 107 cycles of alternating loading at a stress level of 3000 psi.

    Notizen: The photochemical reaction between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chromate ion in aqueous solution has been studied by ultraviolet spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The first step of the reaction appears to be formation of a PVA-chromate ester. No further detectable chemical changes occur unless the ester is irradiated. Spectral sensitivity data indicate the reaction is initiated only by the chromate ester charge transfer absorptions at approximately 370 nm and 450 nm. EPR indicates an equilibrium concentration of Cr (V) during irradiation arid a decrease in concentration of Cr(V) following second order kinetics upon cessation of irradiation. The final reaction product is Cr (III) complexed with the hydroxyl groups of the PVA. The reaction rate is a function of pH between pH 12; however no detectable reaction occurred above pH 12. A mechanism is proposed for the PVA-chromate photoreaction in solution.

    Notizen: It is illustrated experimentally that swelling and deformation of narrow lines (width 〈 1 μm) is an important limitation on the fidelity and transverse resolution of negative electron resists. The thickness response curve developed for negative resists is discussed and the effect of feature size is introduced through the experimental parameter DgR, the rigid gel dose, or the dose required to initiate a free standing line of width 〈 0.2 μm. The transition from line to area exposure is discussed and the effect of substrate backscatter or transverse resolution in gratings is calculated. The observed resolution is 3-5 times the calculated value from swelling and deformation during development.

    Notizen: A theoretical study has been carried out in order to explain the sensitivities of electron beam and X-ray resists. A preliminary investigation reveals that the behavior of these resists, on irradiation by high energy radiation, may be considered to be the electronically-excited species in the polymer. To elucidate the chemical reactions in the excited states the adiabatic potential curves are calculated by the INDO/S procedure, which considers all the valence electrons and all the singly excited electronic configurations. Polyethylene and polyisobutylene were chosen as representative of crosslinkable and degradable polymers, respectively, since there is a parallelism between the beam sensitivity of resists and the effects of high energy radiation on polymers. Polyisobutylene has many antibonding curves favorable for the main chain scission in the excited states and polyethylene does not except for one improbable state. It was concluded that degradability is explainable by the ease of bond fission in the excited states; the crosslinkability is considered to be nondegradable property.

    Notizen: A series of starch graft copolymers and one cellulose graft copolymer were prepared containing 40-50 percent synthetic polymer. The monomers used (styrene, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate) were chosen to give grafted synthetic polymers with varying glass transition temperatures (Tg). These graft copolymers were extruded, in the absence of any added thermoplastic homopolymer, to give strong, continuous polysaccharide-filled plastics which are biodegradable and which exhibit little or no die swell. Properties of plastics varied with the Tg of the thermoplastic portion. Starch-g-polystyrene and starch-g-poly(methyl methacrylate) were hard and brittle, while graft copolymers prepared from methyl and butyl acrylate were more flexible and leathery. The graft Uopolymers with lower Tg grafts required less torque and could be extruded at lower temperatures. In the methyl acrylate series, a graft copolymer prepared from gelatinized starch was more easily extruded than one prepared from granular starch, and addition of water produced a water-filled extrudate of excellent quality. The surprising feature of these results is that the matrix polymers, starch and cellulose, are rigid, nonsoftening materials. Grafting of a thermoplastic polymer to these matrix polymers would not be expected to give an extrudable product. The results are explained as powder flow followed by fusion or sintering of the graft polymers under the temperature and pressure conditions in the die.

    Notizen: Because of the increase in cost of foreign oil, ethylene costs have increased markedly within the last several years. There is presently a sizeable incentive to reduce raw material costs for basic polymer manufacture. The polyketones, synthesized from ethylene and CO, and the polysulfones, synthesized from ethylene and SO2, both utilizing high energy radiation, offer one such possibility. The process has the additional advantage that CO and SO2, usually considered as.wastes and pollutants from fossil fuel burning power plants, are converted to useful materials. The polyketones and polysulfones formed by radiation-induced polymerization from the gas phase below 100°C have been found to be high molecular weight polymers which, depending on composition, either melt with difficulty or decompose at temperatures of 250°C or higher. The higher temperature (〉100°C) catalyst-induced reaction produces low molecular weight waxes. Design calculations indicate that for a G value of 10, 000 and 50 percent energy deposition efficiency, it would take 331 megacuries of Co6O to conserve 2 billion pounds of ethylene or 25 percent of the overall U.S. consumption in the PE market by substituting CO and SO2. This savings amounts to as much as $280 million at today's market price. Electron machine radiation with a 25 percent energy deposition efficiency requires a total beam power of 9800 KW. The use of machine radiation is preferred because of safety, availability, and lower initial investment. The challenge presented by the development of these substituted polymer systems depends on (1) the determination of the uniqueness of the radiation process and confirming the yields with electron machine radiation, (2) the processability and market acceptability of the substituted polymers, and (3) the ability to design an efficient radiation process reactor.

    Notizen: A review is given of the mechanics of peeling rupture of an adhesive joint, consisting of a flexible adhering strip peled away from a layer of adhesive. Attention is drawn to a number of anomalous results that cannot be accounted for solely, in terms of the thermodynamic work of formation of two new surfaces. The work of detachment is found to be generally much larger than the theoretically-predicted amount. Moreover, the value obtained is greater for thicker layers of adhesive, and for detachment at a peel angle of 180° rather than at 90°. Also, it is found to increase with increasing thickness of the adhering strip, passing through a maximum value in some cases and then decreasing as the strip thickness is increased still further. All of these effects are attributed to dissipative processes, for example, plastic yielding, in one or both of the adhering layers as they are peeled apart. Some quantitative relationships are given for the additional peel forces arising from plastic yielding of the adherend or the adhesive.

This paper discusses network formation, polymer-interfacial growth association and failure as a function of the following variables: light intensity (effect on sol/gel conversion), photoinitiator (structurereactivity as a function of conversion), polymer shrinkage, and substrate wetting. The results of this study show that all of the above variables interact in a composite fashion to influence the final properties of the ultraviolet cured coatings.

    Notizen: The advent of X-ray lithography as a natural compliment to electron beam pattern generation and photolithography seems to be filling a need in the fabrication of submicron devices. The X-ray technique, which is simple for single level devices, lags behind other lithographies in registration techniques. However, its proven high resolution capabilities is responsible for the increased interest in further development. At present a, variety of mask substrates are being evaluated with no one material exhibiting an overwhelming advantage. The type of substrate used is closely coupled to the permissable wavelength of the X-ray source. The X-rays used for lithography to date vary from Rh L (4Å) up to CK (44Å). Each wavelength shows a distinct advantage and disadvantage. For example, at short wavelengths substrates can be relatively massive but resists are less sensitive and high resolution masks have low contrasts. At longer wavelengths, resists are more sensitive and masks have higher contrast, but defects due to dust are more probable. The use of more than one X-ray source could fulfill the requirements imposed by mask making and device fabrication. High throughput for both masks and device require both foster resists and higher intensity X-ray sources.

    Notizen: The contribution of parameters such as molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and stereochemistry to electron beam sensitivity of poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, has been investigated. The sensitivity is interpreted here as the minimum radiation dose required to obtain a predetermined solubility rate ratio, S/So = SR, of the exposed, S, and unexposed, So, material. The G-value was foam be independent of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and stereochemistry. Data indicate that the weight average molecular weight ratio correlates better with SR than the number average molecular weight ratio. The tacticity of the resist and the developer solvent molecular weight or size have a large effect on solubility rate. Although the solubility rate pf isotactic PMMA is much greater than the syndiotactic and heterotactic stereoforms, the sensitivity appears to be independent of tacticity. In a homologous series of n-alkyl acetate developer solvents, the molecular size of the solvent has a greater effect on the solubility rate than the molecular weight of the resist. A developer solvent has been selected from the n-alkyl acetates which enhanced the sensitivity of PMMA.

    Notizen: Photolithographic and electron-beam integrated circuit fabrication techniques rely heavily upon differences in polymer resist dissolution (development) rates to produce circuit patterns. We have applied the wide-line NMR, technique, augmented by dynamic nuclear polarization, to the measurement of polymer dissolution rates of poly(methyl methacrylate), (PMMA). At high gamma-ray exposures, we find PMMA to have dissolution rates from 2X to 1000X those of unirradiated material. The highest radiation-enhanced dissolution rates are obtained with carbon tetrachloride-based developer solutions, whereas generally lower enhanced rates are observed with 1:3 acetone or methylethylketone/isopropanol standard developer. E-beam line exposures are developed in PMMA and poly(ethyl methacrylate), PEMA, resists using similar developers for comparison. Using straight CCl4 as a developer, e-beam lines 1-2 μ wide were developed in 3800 Å thick PEMA resist at 1 × 10-5 C/cm2 with ≤200 Å loss in unexposed resist thickness. The higher differential dissolution with CCl4, a poorer solvent for unirradiated PMMA than acetone or MEK, is explained by decline in polarity of PMMA by radiationinduced decarboxylation.

    Notizen: Successful modification of the surface properties of solid polymers was obtained by the adsorption of appropriate partially fluorinated oligomers at polymer/air and polymer/substrate inter faces during the formation of these interfaces. These additives, in concentrations of 0.25 percent, effectively lowered the critical surface tension of wetting, γc, of such polymers as polystyrene, poly(methylmethacrylate), and poly(vinylidene chloride) copolymers by as much as 26 dyn/cm. The obtained low γc values of 14 dyn/cm correspond to surfaces containing closely packed CF3 and CF2 groups. Adhesion of additive-containing polymer films to various substrates was demonstrated to be a function of additive diffusion to the polymer/substrate interface, its subsequent adsorption and molecular orientation at that interface, and the surface energy of the substrate. The fluorinated additive molecules also have the advantage of being sufficiently mobile in the solidified polymer to reach and repair the interfaces.

    Notizen: The rheological behavior of aqueous solutions of Separan AP-30®, polymethylcellulose, and polyvinylpyrrolidone was studied experimentally. These solutions exhibit non-Newtonian flow behavior in simple shear, and are characterized by one of several 2, 3, or 4 parameter rheological equations. The equations used included the power law, the Ellis model, Spriggs equation, the Herschel-Bulkley equation, and Meter's model. The power law model fits the data for each of the solutions over a limited range of shear rates, whereas the other models, which include either a lower shear rate limiting Newtonian viscosity, and/or an upper shear rate limiting Newtonian viscosity, or a yield stress, fit the data well over a wide range of shear rates from 0.00675 to 1076 sec-1. The pressure drop-flow rate data for the same aqueous solutions flowing through packed beds were correlated well by the Ergun equation using the various rheological models applied in this work to evaluate a modified fluid viscosity. In each case it was found that the rheological model which best fit the viscometric data also gave the best packed bed friction factor correlation, and that no one model, such as the powerlaw, or the Ellis model, is the best one to use in all cases for all solutions. For polyvinylpyrrolidone solutions large deviations between experimental values of friction factor and those from the Ergun equation occurred for modified Reynolds numbers greater than one. A pseudo viscoelastic parameter was used to improve the friction factor correlation empirically at high Reynolds numbers.

    Notizen: Poly(methyl α-chloroacrylate) (PMCA) and the copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methyl α-chloroacrylate (poly(MMA-co-MCA)) have been reported recently to be more susceptible to radiation degradation than poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In this paper we report our studies of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) as electron-sensitive positive resists. It has been found that both PMCA and the copolymers are more sensitive than PMMA. Using mixtures of dimethylformamide and 2-propanol as developers, the sensitivities of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) (38 mole percent MCA) have been found to be 1 × 10-5 and 6 × 10-6 coulomb/cm2, respectively. It has also been found that crosslinking predominates in PMCA when the electron dose exceeds 6 × 10-4 coulomb/cm2.

    Notizen: The shear strength of bonds between isotactic polypropylene and cellophane, formed under standard conditions, has beer studied as a function of cooling rates, following bond formation, and after ageing at temperatures up to 90°C. Rapid cooling produced cohesively failing bonds with shear strengths above 20 kg/em2. Weak, adhesively failing joints were produced under slow-cooling conditions. Strong bonds deteriorated when joints were aged at temperatures above 50°C, but further improvement in bond strength was observed upon ageing at lower temperatures. Experimental observations were consistent with the development of smectic structure in the polypropylene upon rapid cooling; a tendency for transcrystallization in slow-cooled joints was offset by the presence of weak boundary layers in the interface. Ageing produced further development of weak boundary layers and a transition from smectic to monoclinic crystallization in polypropylene. At higher ageing temperatures, the former effect seemed dominant; at lower temperatures, the structural change was assumed responsible for the observed improvement in bond strength.

    Notizen: Contact angle data are reported for a number of pure and binary liquids residing on a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface, measured under conditions simulating distillation, condensation or absorption. By comparing the wettability of such systems with the performance obtained under the same conditions for equipment employing PTFE heat or mass transfer surfaces, it is demonstrated that liquid-solid adhesion plays a key role in determining the heat or mass transfer rates. It is further shown for a considerable number of industriallyimportant conditions that PTFE can give enhanced equipment performance over that obtained, using conventional high energy solid materials.

Block polymers offer three principal approaches for obtaining multiphase glassy polymers in which an elastorner phase is present in the matrix of the glassy polymer. They are: (1) control ofblock polymer composition, (2) blending of block polymer with homopolymers, and (3) polymerization of a solution.of a block polymer in the monomer corresponding to one of the blocks. The observed properties, such as impact strength, modulus, and heat distortion temperature, desired in rubber modified glassy polymers are discussed for block polymer systems prepared using the above approaches.

    Notizen: The structure of AB copolymers with a polypeptide block has been studied by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. Copolymers with a polyvinyl block (polybutadiene or polystyrene) and a hydrophobic polypeptide block (polybenzyl-L-glutamate or polycarbobenzoxy-L-lysine) exhibit a lamellar structure in the dry state and in solution in dioxane or in different chlorinated solvents. This lamellar structure consists of plane, parallel, equidistant sheets. Each sheet results from the superposition of two layers: one formed by the polyvinyl chains in amore or less random coil conformation, the other formed by the polypeptide chains in an α-helix conformation, arranged in a hexagonal array and generally folded. Copolymers with a polyvinyl block and a hydrophilic polypeptide block (poly-Llysine or poly-L-glutamic acid) exhibit a larnellar structure in water solution and in the dry state. The difference between this lamellar structure and the preceding one consists in the conformation of the polypeptide chains: an intramolecular mixture of coiled chains, α-helices, and β chains. Copolymers with a polysaccharide block and a hydrophobic polypeptide block exhibit in DMSO solution and in the dry state a lamellar structure similar to that of copolymers with a polyvinyl block and a hydrophobic polypeptide block.

    Notizen: The molecular theory of Rouse-Bueche-Zimm has been modified to predict the viscoelastic behavior of homogeneous block copolymers. The model consists of beads and springs whose magnitudes correspond to the types of blocks in the polymer. Maximum relaxation times can be computed by this model. Viscoelastic data for poly(styrene-b-α-methyl styrene-b-styrene), poly(α-methyl styrene-b-styrene-b-α-methylstyrene) and poly(styrene-b-α-methyl styrene) were determined by stress relaxation methods. The results compare favorably with those predicted by the theory.

    Notizen: Five glass bead-filled polypropylene composites were rheologically characterized at 240°C using two rotational rheometers to obtain low shear-rate data and a capillary rheometer to obtain high shear-rate data. Both steady and dynamic properties were measured at low shear rates. Each composite was also injection molded into tensile and flexural test bars for a mechanical properties profile at 25°C. The tensile modulus was determined from a simple extensional deformation whereas the flexural modulus was determined from a three-point-bend test.The relative shear viscosity and relative loss modulus are different nonlinear functions of the volume fraction of beads at a constant shear rate, while the relative storage modulus appears to be a linear function of bead fraction. The relative viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate and the zero shear-rate data are in very good agreement with the Guth-Gold equation.The relative tensile modulus and relative flexural modulus are each linear functions of bead fraction over the entire range of filler concentration, 0-29 vol percent. From these data it is concluded that a simple correspondence between slow viscous flow and small strain elasticity does not exist for these composites.

    Notizen: High pressure room temperature molding of polymeric powders has been found to be a useful technique for producing parts from certain hard-to-process polymers and certain common polymers. Polymeric powders of less than 175μ were compacted at pressures up to 0.689 GPa. Subsequent heat treating of the compacted samples improves the mechanical properties of the samples to levels comparable to those attained by other techniques. Thermosetting or reactive polymers which do not evolve vapors during curing are readily processed by this technique. Semicrystalline polymers which are molded above their Tg are also easily processed by this method. Glassy polymers, in general, have not been found to be processable. The important process variables are molding pressure, molding time and heat treating temperature and time. The process relies on particle-to-particle fusion by either chemical reaction or localized melt fusion. For semicrystalline polymers, the annealing temperature is within the melting endotherm. Reactive polymers cure at their optimum curing temperature.

    Notizen: Experimental results together with predictions based on a numerical simulation are reported for the filling by injection molding of a center gated, disk-shaped cavity with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (Lustran ABS Q714) and with polypropylene (Pro-fax 6523). At a specified fractional fill, the output of a pressure transducer (Δπzz) near the sprue was measured and the clamp force (F) was obtained by. integrating the output of four pressure transducers over the projected area. A systematic study was made to determine the effect of the (1) material properties, (2) cavity thickness, (3) melt temperature in the barrel, and (4) injection rate on the measured and simulated values for the pressure transducer output and clamp force. For a given barrel temperature, cavity thickness and intermediate-to-high injection rates, the pressure transducer output and clamp force were found to be nearly independent of injection rate for ABS and to increase with increasing injection rate for polypropylene. As the injection rate approached zero, the pressure transducer output and clamp force increased because of the long time available for cooling the flowing melt. For ABS the simulated results were about 5-25 percent higher than experiment, whereas for polypropylene they were about 10 percent lower than experiment when the viscosity model included solidification Flow instabilities were observed to occur at conditions where the pressure transducer output curve showed a marked upturn with decreasing injection rate.

    Notizen: Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was investigated as a prospective coupling agent for mica-reinforced polypropylene. Composites prepared with the widely-used silane coupling agent, N-(4-vinylphenyl) methyl-N′-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)ethylenediamine monohydroehloride (Z-6032), were compared with the amino-coupled composite. Improvements in the flexural properties at room temperature were observed with the two coupling agents: a 22 percent increase in the strength with the silane compared to a. 16 percent increase with DMAEMA. Cone-and-plate viscometry at 220°C showed that the addition of coupling agents greatly, reduces the viscosity of the composite: a 50 percent decease was obtained with the silane-treated composite and a 20 percent decrease with DMAEMA.

    Notizen: Articles with increased rigidity can be obtained by compression molding at high pressures as shown by experiments with five types of linear polyethylene. The materials, with weight average molecular weight ranging up to 1,000,000 were molded at pressures as high as 80,000 psi. The material temperature was 149-204°C, and the tooling was at 38°C. The duration of load was typically 3 mins, and the thickness of the molded disks was 12.7 mm. The results show that at high molding pressure the tensile modulus of the material is nearly twice that of materials molded conventionally at low pressures. This increase in modulus occurs for all the materials studied and even for a duration of load of only one min. The causes for this large increase in modulus were investigated with the help of density and melting point measurements and optical and electron microscopy. It was observed that the spherulites showed a distinctive and systematic change with the forming pressure. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the high modulus phenomenon on the basis of the kinetics of spherulite formation.

    Notizen: Experimental studies were performed on the effects of postcuring of' styrenated, unsaturated polyesters in nitrogen gas, water or its vapor, hexane vapor, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and dirnethyl formamide (DMF) all at 100°C It was found that, nitrogen gas and water are inactive, hexane acts as a chain transfer agent, and DMF and DMSO behave as solvents which extract residual styrene monomer and anhydrides from the resins. Post-treatment in inert media can result in further reaction leading to more complete cure as free radicals and residual monomer continue to react. The post-curing reaction is a radical copolymerization. Further condepgation polymerisation does not occur. Post-curing in, hexane vapor1eads to a transfer of the active sites from the radicals to the hexane and to no further radical polymerization.

    Notizen: Investigated are the swelling and hygroelasticity of a unidirectional glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite subjected to boiling water for 24 hrs. By analogy with thermoelasticity, a coefficient of hygroelasticity is defined and shown to be predictable from the coefficients of the constituent materials by Schapery's equations. A mechanism for water penetration into the composite which combines capillarity and diffusion is proposed on the basis of the results of the water take-up as a function of the composite specimen width (fiber length).

    Notizen: Samples of epoxy having three different degrees of crosslinking were subjected to several constant values of hydrostatic pressure ranging from 1000 psi to 80 ksi. Each period of constant pressure was followed by a period at atmospheric pressure. A continuing decrease in volume (creep), as measured by axial strain at constant pressure, was observed for pressures of 10 ksi and greater. The creep strain was recovered immediately upon pressure removal. Reapplication of pressure after a short period at atmospheric pressure resulted in the same creep behavior as that resulting from the first pressure. The least cross-linked epoxy had the smallest creep rate and the smallest compressibility. These observations are consistent with the view that the leapt cross-linked epoxy would be the most compact and have the least voids at points of cross-linking.

    Notizen: We consider the effects of using urethane rubber/epoxide resin blends as matrices for unidirectional glass and carbon fiber and for balanced-weave glass fiber cloth composites. The mechanical properties of the unreinforced resin and various composites were measured for specimens with matrices containing up to 35 percent of urethane. The properties of the unreinforced resin show very marked changes between 30 and 35 percent of urethane due, it is believed, to the existence of discrete regions of urethane polymer throughout the matrix. The transverse properties of the unidirectional carbon fiber composites are significantly enhanced by the presence of 20 percent of urethane in the matrix without, apart from a decrease in the shear modulus, any marked change in other properties. This could prove useful in the applications of carbon fiber composites. Results for glass fiber materials are less dramatic, possibly because of poorer adhesion between the glass fiber and the urethane. If this is indeed the cause of the results, it should be possible to bring about an improvement for glass fiber composites by using fibers coated with a suitable coupling agent.

    Notizen: In poly(butylene terephthalate) based compositions, thermal degradation of the polymer matrix during processing has to be minimized to achieve quality products. Experience has shown a temperature-residence time relationship, indicating that for mixing systems with high product temperatures, the residence time of the product has to be reduced to avoid excessive thermal degradation. The power density of the mixing system is related to the specific energy input and the residence time of the product. From rheology, the power density is also known for a simple shear deformation which can thus be used to characterize the shear intensity of a particular mixing process. Comparing two different mixing systems by their power density provides us with a qualitative better understanding why higher shear is permitted with lower residence time. From theoretical considerations it was found that for a temperature-sensitive product, like PBT, the power density in the mixing operation can be further raised, taking into account that with shorter residence time a higher product temperature is permitted. Production-scale test work was carried out on a 200 mm screw-diameter continuous kneader to investigate the effect of running conditions and screw design on the thermal degradation of two different types of PBT. Results have shown that for the high-viscosity PBT a linear relationship exists between product temperature and the viscosity retained upon compounding. In a two-stage kneader only minor thermal degradation is encountered in the melting section, but conditions become critical in the mixing stage due to the viscosity increase after introducing the glass fibers to the melt. A new feature in compounding thermodegradable products is the addition of unmolten polymer into the mixing stage of the kneader since this leads to a reduction in the product end temperature and, consequently, thermal degradation of the matrix material. The limited results obtained so far indicate that an optimum exists as to the amount of pellets added. At a 15 percent level the product temperature was reduced by 20°C as compared to 10°C at 20 percent. An energy balance carried out on the continuous kneader indicates that because of the low melt viscosity approximately 30 percent of the energy put into the product in the melting section of the kneader originates from external heating. A rough comparison shows that the power density of a continuous kneader is twice that of a single-screw extruder designed for compounding PBT, but, can be tolerated because of the considerably lower residence time in the former mixing system.

    Notizen: Creep experiments carried out on transparent and translucent polymers permit the observation of irreversible material damage in the form of crazes or microcracks. The formation of such damage is strongly dependent on the applied stress, temperature and environmental conditions. The first appearance of observable material damage seems to be explicable by an energy criterion. The energy supplied by the external load can be divided into conserved and dissipated parts, each of them causing volume (isotropic) and shape (deviatoric) changes. The different parts of the energy can be computed if the creep-compliance is approximated by a Prony-Dirichlet series with a finite number of terms. Computations carried out for experiments with air as the environmental medium under isothermal conditions show the dependence between the appearance of first visible material damage (crazes or microcracks) and the conserved energy.

    Notizen: Short glass fiber-epoxy laminates of controlled fiber orientation and distribution were loaded to failure under uniaxial tension.     Notizen: Polymer blends and composites are composed of two different components, and usually, two different phases. Sometimes one phase is continuous and the other clearly discontinuous. Often, however, both phases retain some degree of continuity, as in certain fiber reinforced composites, block copolymers, materials composed of alternating lamellae structures and interpenetrating networks. A semi-empirical theory is developed to express mathematically not only the known structures, but also two-phase morphologies not yet synthesized or characterized. Many structures both real and proposed are shown to exhibit dual phase continuity, although for most systems, one phase can be said to be “more continuous” and the other “less continuous”.

    Notizen: For fabrication processes such as blow molding, vacuum forming, film blowing and fiber spinning, extensional flow is the dominate mode of melt deformation. Under these conditions, extensional viscosity is a significant rheological property. Thus, the biaxial extensional viscosity was measured for several samples of polypropylene. A technique based on the bubble inflation method of Denson and Gallo was used. Experimental values of biaxial extensional viscosities ranging from 1014 to 1010 poise as a function of strain rate, 10-5 to 10-2 reciprocal seconds, were obtained at 25°C. The technique used was critiqued and found to be useful in characterizing unoriented and biaxially oriented films, Uniaxially oriented films gave unsatisfactory results. It may be possible to use this testing method to assist in materials selection decisions.

    Notizen: Reinforcement mechanisms of fiber-glass reinforced plastics (FRP) under wet conditions are reviewed with emphasis on molecular structures of glass/matrix interfaces. Included are studies on glass surface, the glass/coupling agent interface, silane coupling agents on glass surfaces as well as in solution, the coupling agent/matrix interface, extending to the interphase of particulate-filled composites, and matrix resin. For a better understanding of wet strength of FRP, the structures under dry conditions are extensively, reviewed. The chemical bonding theory still dominates other reinforcement theories. The importance of other factors such as orientation of silane coupling agents and the restriction of matrix polymer conformations are also considered. Based on recent development in spectroscopy, molecular level research of the glass/matrix interfaces has been initiated in the past decade, yet only a few spectroscopic investigations on the function of water have appeared. It is concluded that the correlation between spectroscopic investigations and mechanical properties of a FRP is indispensable.

    Notizen: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the development of stress birefringence patterns of molten polymer during the mold filling and cooling operation. For this study, a rectangular mold cavity with glass windows on both sides was constructed, which permitted us to record on a movie film the changes in stress birefringence patterns in the mold cavity during the molding operation, using a circular polariscope. The mold was equipped with an automatic relay system which closes the shut-off valve when the pressure in the mold cavity reaches a predetermined value. The mold was also equipped with both heating and cooling devices, so that either isothermal or non-isothermal injection molding could be carried out. The mold temperature was controlled by thermistor regulated controllers. During the entire cycle of the molding operation, the mold cavity pressure was continuously recorded on a chart recorder, using a melt pressure transducer. The present study shows how molding conditions (namely, injection pressure, melt temperature, mold temperature) influence the distribution of stress birefringence patterns in a molten polymer while it is being injected into, and cooled in, a rectangular mold cavity.

    Notizen: A polybenzimidazole having the structural repeat unit and designated AB-PBI was formed into films by casting or precipitating from dilute solutions. Selected films were swollen in a plasticizing medium arid drawn about 2X. All films were dried in a vacuum oven to aid in the removal of residual solvent and moisture. Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) was used to show the type of ordering found in this material and to indicate the extent of molecular orientation. Neither a glass transition nor a crystalline melting point has been observed for this polymer, A Perkin-Elmer DSC was used to scan the temperature range from -150 to H-400°C in search of secondary transitions. The rheovibron proved more sensitive and a transition was located in the vicinity of -60°C. An activation energy-was determined. The morphology of this polymer is subject to speculation. The ability of the chain to adopt a linear conformation leads to the possibility of a liquid-crystalline nature in solution. A model based on the data in hand is suggested. Stress-strain data was used to compare the mechanical properties of films prepared by several methods as well as to demonstrate the effect of orientation on strength.

    Notizen: The volatile products from the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resins and compounds are shown to contain trace amounts of vinyl chloride. Data presented show the effect of temperature and resin type on the amount of vinyl chloride formed. At the maximum temperatures involved in PVC processing which may reach 210°C., vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) evolution amounts to less than 1 ppm (resin basis). A technique employing a thermogravimetric balance and charcoal adsorption of volatiles is described for studying thermal degradation of PVC. The volatiles are analyzed for vinyl chloride by gas chromatography. Peak identity was confirmed by mass spectrometry.

    Notizen: This paper points out that interpretations from stress changes alone during oriented crystallization have led to widely different proposed chain conformations and consequently very different crystallization mechanisms for strain-induced crystallization (SIC). Many of the proposals, including the one by Keller and Machin which takes into account some electron microscopy and X-ray observations, show varying degrees of incompatibility with existing stress relaxation, kinetic or morphological data on SIC. Another problem lies in the difficulty with proper interpretation of observed morphology on samples which have been Subjected to additional thermally-induced crystallization (TIC) after SIC, especially, in the absence of prior characterization of SIC crystallites, the finding of a fibrillar-to-lamellar transformation in stretched polymers upon additional TIC (Part H) also indicates that the generally-observed oriented lamellar morphology has a much more subtle origin than-that depicted by most crystallization models. Part I discusses our previously published morphological data on the characteristics of SIC crystallites from the melt, which includes: (a) their melting point elevation, (Tm » T°m), (b) their nearly perfect crystalline orientation function (fc ∼ 1), (c) their fast rates of crystallization (t1/2 〈 1 sec), and (d) their fibrillar morphology and limited dimensions along the fibrillar stretch axis (∼100Å). Examples of morphology of SIC from the glass and from stirred solution are also included to show the overall similarity of fibrillar morphology brought about by stretching.

    Notizen: Corona treatment of films, mainly polyethylene, was studied at commercial levels in a small continuous treater. Degree of treatment was characterized by measuring polar and dispersion components of surface energy, ASTM Wipe and ASTM Adhesion Ratio (“peel adhesion”). The chief factors studied were corona current, applied frequency, web speed, dielectric thickness and air-gap thickness between electrode and film. Other factors less intensively investigated were type of film, film additives, aging time after treatment, humidity and corona atmosphere. The polar component of surface energy, γSP, is the key to understanding the changes in adhesive behavior of the films during treatment. We found that, for the equipment used, γSP is accurately given by the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \gamma _S^P = 16.91\,D^{0.297}\, G^{- 0.404}\, S^{0.303} (1 - e^{- 1.95\,I/S}) $$\end{document} where D = dielectric thick ness and G = air gap, both in mils; S = web speed, ft/min; I = corona current, ma, and γSP is in dyne-cm/cm2. A similarly structured equation describes ASTM Wipe. Using measured surface-energy components for the pressure-sensitive tape used in the peel adhesion test, it was possible to calculate an adhesion interaction for each film on which peel adhesion was measured and to show that it closely correlates with peel strength. Humidity changes in the moderate-humidity range, number of electrodes used and corona frequency had little effect on properties. Slip additives inhibited development of adhesion until treatment levels became high; adhesion properties gradually diminished upon aging of films stored at ambient conditions.

    Notizen: Stress-induced crystallization may be studied by the birefringence technique and by low-angle light scattering. From measurements of the change in birefringence and stress during the crystallization of a polymer above its Tg and from a calculation of the intrinsic birefringence of a polymer crystal, the change in volume fraction crystallinity may be calculated. The technique is illustrated for several polymers and found to give values in reasonable agreement with other methods for the study of crystallinity. Crystallization is also accompanied by the development of a low-angle light scattering pattern, the size and shape of which is indicative of the amount, size and morphology of the crystalline superstructure.

Computational evaluation and discussion of various flow effects in the nucleation step, including combined shear and extensional flows, are presented in terms of the elastic dumbbell model. These results indicate the important role extensional kinematics in the growth process. A qualitative evaluation of concentration effects is also given. The evaluation of facts concerning the growth morphology is presented in terms of a model for the growth process along with data concerning rinsing and quench rate effects on the morphology and inciting behavior of shish kebab crystals.

    Notizen: A theory of crystallization under stress is developed about the premise that the direction a chain takes through a crystallite, relative to its end-to-end vector, is determined by the first few links of a chain that initially deposit onto the crystallite surface. Since these few links are quickly trapped by subsequently crystallizing chains, their orientational probability prior to deposition governs the chain direction through the crystallite, and the properties of the system depend upon a statistical distribution of all vector orientations. Such a model leads to a relationship between the melting temperature and the degree of network orientation, and relates the retractive force to temperature in the crystallization region. The theory appears to adequately describe some of the published data on rubber and polychloroprene networks.

    Notizen: Filaments of polypropylene having remarkably high strength and modulus have been prepared by the two-stage drawing process of Clark and Scott (4). In the first stage, un-oriented extruded billet is rapidly drawn to the natural draw ratio of ca 7X in hot silicone oil. The second stage of draw, a post neck draw process termed superdrawing, requires a slow rate of draw at carefully controlled temperatures to achieve maximum property values; the optimum conditions appear to be close to 4 percent/min at 130°C, The highest mechanical properties obtained were a Young's modulus of 22 GPa (240 gdtex, 3 × 106 psi) and a tensile strength of 0.93 GPa (10 gdtex, 1.3 = 105 psi) with an elongation to break of 7 percent. The filaments show a distinctive dead bend lack of recovery, WAXS data indicate high orientation of the molecules. SAXS data show no scattering to a resolution of 40 nm which is interpreted in terms of a continuous crystal matrix in the superdrawn filament. SEM micrographs of fractured filaments reveal a morphology of large fibrils of lath like habit with a thickness of ca. 0.1 μm. A series of experiments relating mechanical properties to the rate and temperature of superdrawing is interpreted in terms of two competing mechanisms; shearing displacement of microfibrils and unfolding of chain-fold blocks. Models are offered to explain the observed mechanical and physical property changes on superdrawing.

    Notizen: A discussion of the effect of deformation on mixing leads to reorientation of fluid interfaces as a proposed mechanism for special “mixing sections” in single screw extruders. Based on the kinematics of mixing it is shown how a mixing section can greatly decrease the amount of work necessary to accomplish extensive mixing through orienting the fluid more favorably for mixing by subsequent shear. Mathematical development quantitatively describes favored configurations of mixing sections. An upper bound for the mixing performance of a simple model of an extruder with special sections is shown to be similar to turbulent mixing. Based on this theory the key actions of the special sections are identified.

    Notizen: Two models are used to describe vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) diffusion from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) packages to food simulating solvents. It was found that when the initial solid concentration in a PVC package is 0,35 ppm: (a) For poor solvents such as water and oils, VCM concentration in the solvent, Cl, theoretically will not exceed 20 ppb. (b) For strong solvents, the volume ratio of package solid/solvent should not exceed 0.1 in order to keep (Cl)max below 20 ppb. (c) It was demonstrated that thickness can be adjusted to give a Cl = 20 ppb at the time equal to the shelf-life of the package. The method can also be used to calculate the initial concentration of VCM in a package which will give a proposed level of maximum Cl when the solvent and package geometry are fixed. VCM diffusion from PVC pressure pipe to pipe fluids was similarly analyzed.

    Notizen: This study demonstrates that it is possible to extrude highly oriented polyethylene fibers using only a plasticating single screw extruder, specially designed and operated dies, and a simple take up mechanism. The degree of orientation achieved is as high as that achieved in solid state extrusion studies but accomplished at a fraction of the pressure. The degree of orientation is significantly greater than that of commercial grade fibers. The orientation is developed in the elongational flow of the “wine glass stem” region preceding the die entrance and is retained by crystallization in the die. Crystallization is inhibited in the pre-die region by maintaining a temperature above the effective melting point of the flowing, oriented (hence lowered entropy) melt.

    Notizen: A graphical method based on dimensional analysis is presented for estimating the injection pressure and clamp force required for injection molding amorphous polymers to form disk-shaped parts with a constant wall thickness. A procedure is suggested for estimating clamp force when the projected area of the mold cavity is smaller than the surface area of one side of the molded part. The results reported here are based on a numerical simulation of a power-law fluid filling a cold mold at a constant injection rate. The dimensionless bulk temperature and the ratios of the nonisothermal injection pressure (clamp force) to the isothermal injection pressure (clamp force) are given as functions of the dimensionless cooling time τ, the Brinkman number Br which characterizes viscous heating, the power-law exponent n, and a dimensionless temperature β which includes the inlet melt and mold wall temperatures and the temperature coefficient for viscosity.

    Notizen: A major objective in polymer rheology is to predict a fluid's response to a general deformation from molecular information. A method has been developed which allows one to predict the viscoelastic properties of polymer melts from a limited amount of rheological and molecular data for the polymer. The input parameters are: (a) zero-shear viscosity; (b) molecular weight distribution; (c) temperature and density; and (d) constants relating Graessley's relaxation time to the Rouse relaxation time. The technique then “simulates” a discrete relaxation spectrum using G′ and G″ data from the Rouse theory and finally requires that a continuum model of polymer viscoelasticity be fit to shear viscosity data predicted by Graessley's theory. Examples of the utility of the procedure are given to illustrate the role of molecular weight and weight distribution in determining rheological behavior.

    Notizen: The purpose of this work was to determine if capillary extrusion rheometer and mechanical spectrometer data can be used to predict the molding performance of a commercially available diallyl phthalate (DAP) compound. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves of “good” and “bad” batches were statistically analyzed in order to determine if the DSC peak shape is related to the molding performance. It was found that the data obtained from all three techniques correlate very well with the molding behavior of the DAP material studied. Capillary rheometer and mechanical spectrometer results show that lower melt viscosities and lower curing rates are desirable for obtaining satisfactory molding performance. The mathematical moments analysis of DSC curves indicates that DAP batches which molded well give peaks of fairly high symmetry, while all peaks of “bad” batches are skewed to the left. The center of gravity of the former is at a higher temperature and the variance is smaller than the corresponding values of “bad” compounds.

    Notizen: Divalent metal salts of ethylene glycol-methacrylate-maleate in the amorphous state were easily soluble in styrene, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, to give homogeneous, curable mixtures with high metal content. The viscosities of the mixtures varied depending on the metal present. The mixtures were copolymerized to give metal-containing cured resins of increased compressive strength and Rockwell hardness. Moreover, heat distortion temperature could be improved by introducing Mg or Ca. Of the cured resins studied, the Mg-containing resin showed the best physical properties. Resistance of the metal-containing resins to attack by organic solvents was generally high, whereas greater degradation by aqueous reagents was noted. The thermal behavior of the resins is discussed.

    Notizen: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

    Notizen: This article describes a new experimental and analytical method for determining the specific heat and thermal coductivity of plastic materials. This method arrives at these temperature-dependent properties by analyzing the thermal history of a slab of the plastic material. The procedure is as follows: 1) A partial differential equation model of the heat flow through the slab is established a priori. 2) A varying heat flux is a applied to the slab, and temperature readings throughout the plastic are recorded at fixed time intervals. 3) This temperature data is fed into a digital computer (along with the established mathematical model) and the required specific heat and thermal conductivity values are extracted. The extraction is done by using the maximum likelihood system identification technique.

    Notizen: Highly oriented filaments of nylon 6 and polypropylene (PP) are shown to craze when deformed slowly at room temperature. A marked yield point occurs at 20-40 percent elongation. After this point extensive voiding occurs until at fracture the overall density is reduced by ∽25 percent for PP and ∽15 percent for nylon 6. SAXS analysis indicates that for PP the voids are elongated in the fiber axis while for nylon 6 voiding occurs both parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Optical and electron microscopy show typical craze structures. The use of etching demonstrates that crazing occurs across the whole filament cross section. This yielding behavior is shown to be associated with the use of a low temperature of drawing during fiber production and becomes less important when a higher temperature of drawing or a separate annealing step are used. The crazing mechanism is thought to involve progressive separation of interfibril boundaries with the production of elongated voids.

    Notizen: ABA block copolymers were prepared by the anionic polymerization of α-methyl-α-butyl-β-propiolactone, MBPL (B block), and pivalolactone, PL (A blocks). The MBPL block had a very low decree of crystallinity and a glass temperature of - 13°C, so phase separation with extensive crystallization of the PL blocks gave thermoplastic elastomers when the MBPL block constituted the principal and continuous phase. The observed crystallinity and melting point of 40-45°C in the MBPL homopolymer have not been previously reported. Measurements were obtained by electron microscopy of the initial size distribution of the PL domains as a function of copolymer composition and degree of polymerization, and on the effect of annealing on this parameter. Tensile strengths and elongations at break were both less than those previously observed for equivalent ABA block copolymers of PL and α-methyl-α-propyl-β-propiolactone.

    Notizen: Temperature was calculated as a function of lateral and axial position within a thin poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) tape traveling alternately over a heated roll and through air. The system consists of a pair of rolls which are internally heated and located in an oven. The centers of the rolls are ten inches apart and the tape makes eight wraps around the roll pair. Three sources of heat transfer to the tape are considered: convection and radiation from the heated rolls, convection from the air, and radiation from the hot oven walls. Calculations were carried out for oven wall temperatures of 100 and 1000°C, air temperatures of 100 and 205°C, and roll surface temperatures of 180 and 235°C. The computations generally indicate that after several wraps the temperature of the outside surface of the tape (i.e., the surface that does not contact the rolls) is essentially the same each time the tape leaves the roll. However, this temperature changes us the tape then travels through the adjacent, downstream air space. Although there is a temperature gradient across the tape, the temperature of the inside surface (i.e., the side that contacts the rolls) exhibits behavior similar to that of the outside surface.

    Notizen: The cross section geometry of fully wiped corotating twin screws is derived from simple kinematic principles. A pair of screws can have identical cross sections with each screw running at the same speed, or they can have an unequal number of tips and rotate at different speeds. The more conventional case of equal cross section is reviewed in detail, showing how screw diameter, centerline distance, lead, and number of tips influences design, net volumes, and surface areas. The screw cross section is unique for a given diameter, centerline distance, and number of tips. The construction of the cross section is shown, both for pairs of identical screws, and for screws with a speed ratio. Maps are provided to show applicability of screws with 1, 2, and 3 tips.

    Notizen: The inflation and growth kinetics of bubbles in thermoplastic structural foams are discussed in some detail using a model which assumes the initial existence of very small voids in the pressurized polymer melt. The effects of a drop in external pressure, the presence of a distribution of bubble sizes, and the diffusion of gas between neighboring bubbles are considered. It is shown that at a given pressure the number of growing bubbles present in the melt at any onetime depends on the ratio of the critical radius to the average radius of the microvoids assumed to be present in the melt It is also demonstrated that gas diffusion between neighboring bubbles reduces the growth rate appreciably only when the interbubble distance is reduced to a micron or less.

    Notizen: This paper concerns the action of plasticizers and nucleating agents on the crystallization of bisphenol-A polycarbonate. The influence of plasticizers is to increase the rate of crystallization to a great extent using 10 percent of a plasticizer such as trimellitic acid, tridecyloctyl ester. The influence of nucleating substances on plasticized and undiluted polycarbonate is investigated. A large number of substances have been found capable of nucleating polycarbonate crystallization. The un-plasticized semi-crystalline polycarbonate is characterized by a much higher melting point (300°C) than the plasticized semi-crystalline systems (210-245°C). The stability of bisphenol-A polycarbonate in the presence of nucleating salts is also examined. We observe a substantial decrease in the molecular weight in the presence of a great number of nucleating substances. The modulus-temperature curves of two semi-crystalline polymers are reported in the last series of experiments.

    Notizen: The effects of thermal treatment, residual solvent, and preswelling on the thermal properties and swelling behavior of solution cast polyblend films of poly(2,6-dimethyl,1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) were determined. Repeated cycling in the DSC analysis of the “as cast” films suggested that the original films contained residual casting solvent and that solvent-induced crystallization occurred in the PPO-rich compositions. Crystallinity was, apparently, eliminated by the first heating cycle in the differential scanning calorimeter. Sorption kinetics and apparent equilibria, characterizing the penetration of these films by n-hexane from the vapor phase, indicated that both the sorption rate and apparent equilibria are significantly affected by the prior history of the film samples. The sorption results presented here are quantitatively consistent with earlier studies of the PPO-PS system. The increased rate and amount of sorption observed in preswollen samples, and the reduced rate and amount of sorption observed in annealed samples are consistent with recent descriptions of sorption behavior in diverse glassy homopolymer systems.
