    Beschreibung: This paper is a comparative study of the variation in 10Be content of different late Cenozoic sedimentary environments recovered during ODP Leg 117. The Oman Margin site, Hole 728A, with overlying high-productivity cells, the pelagic Owen Ridge site, Hole 722A, and the Indus Fan site, Hole 720A, each display a specific 10Be distribution with time. Differences in scavenging intensity and upwelling in the water column, must account for the variations in the initial 10Be input into the sediments from Holes 728A and 722A, whereas differences in sediment character and sedimentation rate can explain the variances between Holes 722A, 728A, and 720A.

    Beschreibung: Sediment accretion and subduction at convergent margins play an important role in the nature of hazardous interplate seismicity (the seismogenic zone) and the subduction recycling of volatiles and continentally derived materials to the Earth's mantle. Identifying and quantifying sediment accretion, essential for a complete mass balance across the margin, can be difficult. Seismic images do not define the processes by which a prism was built, and cored sediments may show disturbed magnetostratigraphy and sparse biostratigraphy. This contribution reports the first use of cosmogenic 10Be depth profiles to define the origin and structural evolution of forearc sedimentary prisms. Biostratigraphy and 10Be model ages generally are in good agreement for sediments drilled at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 434 in the Japan forearc, and support an origin by imbricate thrusting for the upper section. Forearc sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1040 in Costa Rica lack good fossil or paleomagnetic age control above the decollement. Low and homogeneous 10Be concentrations show that the prism sediments are older than 3-4 Ma, and that the prism is either a paleoaccretionary prism or it formed largely from slump deposits of apron sediments. Low 10Be in Costa Rican lavas and the absence of frontal accretion imply deeper sediment underplating or subduction erosion.

    Beschreibung: The 10Be records of four sediment cores forming a transect from the Norwegian Sea at 70°N (core 23059) via the Fram Strait (core 23235) to the Arctic Ocean at 86°N (cores 1533 and 1524) were measured at a high depth resolution. Although the material in all the cores was controlled by different sedimentological regimes, the 10Be records of these cores were superimposed by glacial/interglacial changes in the sedimentary environment. Core sections with high 10Be concentrations ( 〉1 * 10**9 at/g) are related to interglacial stages and core sections with low10Be concentrations ( 〈0.5 * 10**9 at/g) are related to glacial stages. Climatic transitions (e.g., Termination II, 5/6) are marked by drastic changes in the 10Be concentrations of up to one order of magnitude. The average 10Be concentrations for each climatic stage show an inverse relationship to their corresponding sedimentation rates, indicating that the 10Be records are the result of dilution with more or less terrigenous ice-rafted material. However, there are strong changes in the 10Be fluxes (e.g., Termination II) into the sediments which may also account for the observed oscillations. Most likely, both processes affected the 10Be records equally, amplifying the contrast between lower (glacials) and higher (interglacials) 10Be concentrations. The sharp contrast of high and low 10Be concentrations at climatic stage boundaries are an independent proxy for climatic and sedimentary change in the Nordic Seas and can be applied for stratigraphic dating (10Be stratigraphy) of sediment cores from the northern North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.

    Beschreibung: A 10Be/9Be-based chronostratigraphy has been determined for ODP 181, Site 1121 sediment core, recovered from the foot of the Campbell Plateau, Southwest Pacific Ocean. This core was drilled through the Campbell 'skin drift' in ca. 4500 m water depth on the mid-western margin of the extensive Campbell Nodule Field, beneath the flow of the major cold-water Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). In the absence of detailed biostratigraphy, beryllium isotopes have provided essential time information to allow palaeo-environmental interpretation to be undertaken on the upper 7 m of the core. Measured 10Be/9Be ratios of sediment, and of ferromanganese nodules entrapped in the sediment, decrease systematically with depth in the core, in accordance with radioactive decay. However, the 10Be/9Be data diverge from ca. 3 m below the seafloor (mbsf) to the top of the core, giving rise to several possible geochronological models. The preferred model assumes that the measured 10Be/9Be ratios of the nodule rims reflect initial 10Be/9Be ratios equivalent to contemporary seawater, and that these can be used to derive the true age of the sediment where the nodules occur. The nodule rim ages can be then used to interpret the sediment 10Be/9Be data, which indicate an overall age to ca. 7 mbsf of ca. 17.5 Ma. The derived chronology is consistent with diatom biostratigraphy, which indicates an age of 2.2-3.6 Ma at 1 mbsf. Calculated sedimentation rates range from 8 to 95 cm m.y.**-1, with an overall rate to 7 mbsf of ca. 39 cm m.y.**-1. The lowest rates generally coincide with the occurrence of entrapped nodules, and reflect periods of increased bottom current flow causing net sediment loss. Growth rates of individual nodules decrease towards the top of the sediment core, similar to the observed decrease in growth rate from core to rim of seafloor nodules from the Campbell Nodule Field. This may be related to an overall increase in the vigour of the DWBC from ca. 10 Ma to the present.

    Beschreibung: By the nuclear bomb tests during the 1950s and early 1960s, the radiocarbon content of the atmospheric CO, on the Southern Hemisphere rose within a few years from 98 to 162% of the standard recent value and then dropped to 122% (at the end of 1984). This rapid fluctuation was used to determine the lifetime of five species of lichens collected in the beginning of 1985 in the maritime Antarctic. Under the assumption that Lichens assimilate each year carbon at the same rate and that carbon once fixed at least in main branches never will be exchanged later on. The age of mature thalli of Caioplaco regalis, Ramalino tetebrata and Ustiea antarctica was determined to 32 years, while U, aurantiaco-atra and Himantormia lugubris gave an age of ca. 38 years and ca. 60 years, respectively.

    Beschreibung: Six whole rocks from the basaltic lava series drilled in the Vavilov basin have been analyzed by 39Ar-40Ar stepwise heating method. One sample from the upper part of the Hole 655B basement gave a plateau-age at 4.3 ± 0.3 Ma whereas the other ones showed disturbed age spectra caused by alteration processes. The weighted averages of ages measured at low and intermediate temperatures on these five samples are concordant (1) one to each other and (2) with independent estimates deduced from paleontological and paleomagnetical arguments. Ages of 4.3 ± 0.3 Ma and from 3 to 2.6 Ma may represent reasonable estimates of the crystallization ages of the basaltic lava series of the Holes 655B and 651A, respectively. These ages must be taken with caution because they correspond to argon released from secondary phases characterized by low argon retention.

    Beschreibung: Three selected diamictite samples recovered within sequence group S3 at Sites 1097 (Sample 178-1097A-27R-1, 35-58 cm) and 1103 (Samples 178-1103A-31R-2, 0-4 cm, and 36R-3, 4-8 cm) of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 178 have been investigated by scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, and 40Ar-39Ar laser-heating techniques. They contain variable proportions of fragments of volcanic rock groundmass (mostly in the range of 100-150 µm) with textures ranging from microcrystalline to ipocrystalline. Their rounded shapes indicate mechanical reworking. Fresh groundmass glasses, recognized only in grains from samples of Site 1103, show mainly a subalkaline affinity on the basis of total alkali-silica variations. However, they are characterized by relatively high TiO2 and P2O5 contents (1.4-2.8 and 0.1-0.9 wt%, respectively). Because of the small size of homogeneous grains (100-150 µm), they were not suitable for single-grain total fusion 40Ar-39Ar analyses. The incremental laser-heating technique was applied to milligram-sized samples (only for Samples 178-1097A-27R-1, 35-58 cm, and 178-1103A-36R-3, 4-8 cm) and to various small fractions (each consisting of 10 grains for the sample from Site 1097 and 30 grains for samples from Site 1103). The latter approach resulted in more effective resolution of sample heterogeneity. Argon ages from the small fractions show significantly different ranges in the three samples: 75-173 Ma for Sample 178-1097A-27R-1, 35-58 cm, 18-57 Ma for Sample 178-1103A-31R-2, 0-4 cm, and 7.6-50 Ma for Sample 178-1103A-36R-3, 4-8 cm. Ca/K ratios derived from argon isotopes at Site 1103 suggest that the data mainly refer to outgassing of groundmass glass. At Site 1103, we observe an overall apparent age increase with decreasing sample depth. This is compatible with glacial erosion that affected with time deeper levels of a volcanic sequence previously deposited on the continent. The youngest apparent age of 7.6 ± 0.7 Ma detected close to the bottom of Hole 1103A (340 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) is compatible with the age range of the diatom Actinocyclus ingens v. ovalis Zone (6.3-8.0 Ma) determined for the interval 320-355 mbsf and with the maximum ages derived from strontium isotope composition of barnacle fragments obtained at 262-263 mbsf at the same site. Nevertheless, this age cannot be taken as the maximum youngest age of the volcanic sequence sampled by glacial erosion or as the maximum age for the deposition of the Sequence S3 at 340 mbsf unless validated by further research.

    Beschreibung: Concordant plateau and isochron ages are obtained from 40Ar-39Ar incremental heating experiments on volcanic rocks recovered by drilling at three Leg 121 sites along the Ninetyeast Ridge and two dredge locations on the southern scarp of the Broken Ridge, eastern Indian Ocean. The new data confirm a northerly increase in the age of volcanism along the Ninetyeast Ridge, from 38 to 82 Ma; this lineament links current hotspot volcanism near the Kerguelen islands with the Rajmahal flood basalt eruptions at M0 time (117 ± 1 Ma). The Broken Ridge was formed over the same hotspot at 88-89 Ma, but later experienced rift-related volcanism in Paleocene time (63 Ma). The geometry and distribution of ages along these prominent volcanic ridges and the Mascarene-Chagos-Laccadive-Maldive ridge system in the western Indian Ocean are most compatible with plate motions over fixed hotspots near Kerguelen and Reunion islands, respectively.

    Beschreibung: Detrital K-feldspars and muscovites from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 116 cores that have depositional ages from 0 to 18 Ma have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar technique. Four to thirteen individual K-feldspars have been dated from seven stratigraphic levels, each of which have a very large range, up to 1660 Ma. At each level investigated, at least one K-feldspar yielded an age minimum which is, within uncertainty, identical to the age of deposition. One to twelve single muscovite crystals from each of six levels have also been studied. The range of muscovite ages is less than that of the K-feldspars and, with one exception, reveal only a 20-Ma spread in ages. As with the K-feldspars, each level investigated contains muscovites with mineral ages essentially identical to depositional ages. These results indicate that a significant portion of the material in the Bengal Fan is first-cycle detritus derived from the Himalayas. Therefore, the significant proportion of sediment deposited in the distal fan in the early to mid Miocene can be ascribed to a significant pulse of uplift and erosion in the collision zone. Moreover, these data indicate that during the entire Neogene, some portion of the Himalayan orogen was experiencing rapid erosion (〈= uplift). The lack of granulite facies rocks in the eastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau suggests that very rapid uplift must have been distributed in brief pulses in different places in the mountain belt. We suggest that the great majority of the crystals with young apparent ages have been derived from the southern slope of the Himalayas, predominantly from near the main central thrust zone. These data provide further evidence against tectonic models in which the Himalayas and Tibetan plateaus are uplifted either uniformly during the past 40 m.y. or mostly within the last 2 to 5 m.y.

    Beschreibung: Continuous magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy made it possible to construct a detailed late Neogene record of 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios of ocean water, as measured in the tests of planktonic foraminifers. Sediments recovered during Leg 117, in the western Arabian Sea, provide a continuous, high resolution sedimentary record from the early Miocene to present. The late Miocene to Recent is marked by rapidly increasing 87Sr/86Sr ratios in seawater, which results in a chronostratigraphical resolution varying from 0.2 Ma to 1.5 Ma. The 87Sr/86Sr seawater curve has a stepwise character similar to the one determined by DePaolo on Site 590B, in the Tasman Sea, and to the one determined by McKenzie on Site 653A, in the Mediterranean, confirming its use as a chronostratigraphic tool for this time span. Periods of rapid increase in the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio of seawater are correlated with important changes in tectonic and climatic conditions. Experiments showed that bulk carbonate sediment samples have differing 87Sr/86Sr ratios from those of planktonic and benthic foraminifers from the same depth.
