    In:  The Mekong River Basin
    Publikationsdatum: 2024-05-16
Beschreibung: The complexity of the Mekong River Basin (MRB) has been presented in three different sections focusing on various aspects on the MRB ecohydrological system. Section 1 starts with the physical processes of climate, hydrology, sediment, aquatic biodiversity, changes of land cover/land use, and water related hazards like floods and droughts. In section 2, the book focuses on the water resource management and development and collaboration in the upper MRB, with a special focus on hydro-power development. The last section is dedicated to the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) crossing typical environmental problems like water pollution, river morphological changes, land subsidence, salinity intrusion, coastal erosion, as well as livelihood and climate change adaptation, and agriculture transformation.

Beschreibung: The Mekong River drains a catchment of over 800,000 km2 and is the world's 12th longest river (4800 km), the 8th largest water discharge (470 × 106 m3/year), and the 10th largest sediment load (160 × 106 tons/year). The Mekong starts on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau with a maximal elevation of 5220 m, flows through six countries (China with 16% of its basin, Myanmar with 5% of its basin, Laos with 35% of its basin, Thailand with 18% of its basin, Cambodia with 18% of its basin, and Vietnam with 11% its basin), and empties into the Vietnam East Sea (South China Sea). The Mekong River basin (MRB) has the world's most diverse river ecosystem. It is the world's largest inland fishery. Its biodiversity is fundamental to agricultural production and the food security of 90 million people in the Lower Mekong basin, including about 18 million people in the Vietnamese Mekong delta.

In:  Ecohydrological Complexity from Catchment to Coast
    Publikationsdatum: 2024-05-16
Beschreibung: The Mekong River Basin: Ecohydrological Complexity from Catchment to Coast, Volume Three presents real facts, data and predictions for quantifying human-induced changes throughout the Mekong watershed, including its estuaries and coasts, and proposes solutions to decrease or mitigate the negative effect and enable sustainable development. This is the first work to link socio–ecological interaction study over the whole Mekong River basin through the lens of ecohydrology. Each chapter is written by a leading expert, with coverage on climate change, groundwater, land use, flooding drought, biodiversity and anthropological issues. Human activities are enormous in the whole watershed and are still increasing throughout the catchment, with severe negative impacts on natural resources are emerging. Among these activities, hydropower dams, especially a series of 11 dams in China, are the most critical as they generate massive changes throughout the system, including in the delta and to the livelihoods of millions of people and they threaten sustainability.

Beschreibung: The Mekong Delta is affected by annual seasonal salinity intrusion in December–May. In this season, the discharge of the Mekong is low, and high tidal water levels cause a deep intrusion of saline water. Critical salt concentrations can be observed 50–80 km deep during high tides. These high salt concentrations cause severe problems in terms of fresh irrigation and drinking water. A quantitative knowledge of the current and likely future salinity intrusion is thus urgently required to develop adaptation plans and mitigation measures. This chapter quantifies the current salinity intrusion in the Mekong Delta, as well as a model-based estimation of the possible future salinity intrusion. The different factors affecting salinity intrusion—changing river discharge by climate change and dam development, changes in effective tidal water levels, changing ocean salinity—and their impacts are quantified by hydraulic modeling. Based on the modeling results, recommendations for future planning are derived.

Beschreibung: Current velocities of the upper water column along the cruise track of R/V Sonne cruise SO298 were collected by a vessel-mounted 75 kHz RDI Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The ADCP transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode (WM10) with a bin size of 8.00 m, a blanking distance of 4.00 m, and a total of 100 bins, covering the depth range between 18.0 m and 810.0 m. Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's motion reference unit and the navigation data from the Global Positioning systems were used by the data acquisition software VmDAS internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Single-ping data / ping ensembles were screened for bottom signals and, where appropriate, a bottom mask was manually processed. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (-0.1294° +/- 0.3975°) and scale factor (0.9979 +/- 0.0094) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The velocity data were averaged in time using an average interval of 60 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on following threshold criteria: abs(UC) or abs(VC) 〉 3.0 m/s, rms(UC_z) or rms(VC_z) 〉 0.2.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides counts of diatom valves for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Counts per taxon are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The diatom data provides information on Lateglacial ecosystem dynamics and the dataset was used to interpret changes in aquatic diversity as well as in palaeolimnological conditions. A total of 78 samples were selected for diatom analysis using 2-5 cm sample intervals throughout the Lateglacial section of the core sequence, with a higher sampling resolution (1 cm intervals) around key transitions. Organic matter was removed from the samples (ca. 0.01 grams dried sediment) by oxidation using 5 ml of H2O2 (30%) and heating in a water bath at 70 °C for 24-28 hrs. Subsequently, a few drops of HCl (50%) were added to remove residual H2O2 and carbonates. Samples were washed by adding distilled water, shaking vigorously, centrifuging at 1200 rpm for 4 minutes, and removing the liquid using a pipette. This process was repeated 5 times, and a few drops of ammonia (NH3) were added to the solution prior to the final wash to prevent clumping of diatoms. Diatom slides were mounted using Naphrax and diatoms were identified using Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1986–1991) and Camburn and Charles (2000). For several samples the target count sum of 300 diatom valves could not be reached due to low concentrations or poor diatom preservation. Prior to analysis and interpretation, and where possible, neighbouring samples with a low count sum were amalgamated until a count of at least 100 valves was reached; if this was not possible the samples were deleted from our dataset prior to subsequent analysis (note that these samples are still included in the dataset provided here). All analyses were performed in the laboratories of University College London, UK.

Beschreibung: This is the measurement data from chemical analysis of archaeological Neolithic pottery using portable X-ray fluorescence analysis (p-XRF). The pottery came from the sites Wanna 1588, 1591, 1592, 1594 and 1603 (district of Cuxhaven, Lower Saxony, Germany) and belongs to the cultural group of the Funnel Beaker culture. The measurements are part of the research projects "Preserved in the bog - relics of prehistoric settlement landscapes in the Elbe-Weser triangle" funded by Niedersachsen Vorab and "Pottery traditions as a mirror of social structures of the 5th and 4th millennium BC in northern Central Europe" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG project number 438036891). A handheld Niton XL3t XRF-Analyzer of the company analyticon was used. The device was held stationary in a stand. The measurements were taken on the edge of each sherd that have been previously cleaned and smoothed using abrasive paper. Each sherd was analysed in three different areas of the edge using the mode Mining and a small beam of 3 mm. The data consist of the average values of these measurements for each element. Each spot was analysed with four different filters. The total measuring time was 125 seconds.

Beschreibung: Physical oceanography data was acquired by a ship-based Seabird SBE911plus CTD-Rosette system onboard RV MARIA S. MERIAN during research cruise MSM105. The CTD system is comprised of a Seabird SBE911plus including dual respectively redundant sensor and pump packages. The SBE11plus Deck Unit remains on board in a laboratory and supplies on one hand power to the SBE9plus underwater unit, on the other hand data telemetry between the SBE9plus and a measurement PC. The SBE9plus underwater unit itself holds a pressure sensor and is interfacing with dual SEB3 temperature, SBE4 conductivity and SBE43 oxygen sensors and two SBE5 pumps to provide a pumped water supply past each sensor. The system also carries an optical FLNTU sensor to measure a combinations of back-scattering, turbidity, and chlorophyll-a. To quantify the photo-synthetically active radiation a PAR sensor is installed as well.

Beschreibung: As part of the BMBF funded project TRAFFIC (Trophic Transfer Efficiency in the Benguela Current) and GENUS (Geochemistry and Ecology of the Namibian Upwelling System), the mole fraction of CO2 (xCO2) was measured in surface waters by using an underway pCO2 system (SUNDANS) during eight cruises. SUNDANS was developed by marine analytics and data (MARIANDA, Germany, www.marianda.com) according to the recommendations of the 2002 underway pCO2 system workshop in Miami. It was equipped with a shower type equilibrator, an open pre-equilibrator and a non-dispersive dual cell infrared gas analyzer (LI-7000). The LI-7000 was calibrated by using nitrogen gas (zero CO2) and a two additional standard gas for CO2. The standard gases were obtained from the company Deuste Steininger GmbH, Germany and revealed CO2 concentrations of 350 to 480 ppm (Std1) and around 800 ppm (Std2). The CO2 standard gases were calibrated against the standard gases provided by NOAA at the Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde, Germany and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research in Bremen, Germany. The xCO2 data were recorded each 6 seconds and subsequently averaged minute by minute. Minute by minute data on atmospheric pressure (Digital Barometer PTB220, Vaisala), wind speed (Ultrasonic Anemometer 2D, Thies), seawater temperature (Digital Oceanographic Thermometer SBE38, Sea-Bird Electronics, inc.) and salinity (Thermosalinograph SBE21 Seacat, Sea-Bird Electronics, inc.) were measured by underway systems mounted on board the research vessels (Data provided by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, access under http://dship.bsh.de/). xCO2 was converted into pCO2 by using the CO2sys programme. The difference between the equilibrator and the sea water temperature was taken into account as suggested by Dickson et al. (2007, SOP5, page 8). Additional measurements on total alkalinity were carried out during SO285 using the VINDTA 2S system (MARIANDA, Germany, www.marianda.com). The samples were titrated with a fixed volume of hydrochloric acid (HCl) by equal increments of HCl (0.1 N HCl). The VINDATA 2S system was calibrated using Certified Reference Material provided by A. Dickson (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA).

Beschreibung: As part of the BMBF funded project TRAFFIC (Trophic Transfer Efficiency in the Benguela Current), water column samples were collected from the CTD/Rosette sampler during RV Meteor cruise M153 and RV Sonne cruise SO285. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) Total Alkalinity (TA) were measured on board using the VINDTA 3C system (MARIANDA, Germany, www.marianda.com) as a combined TA and DIC titration stand. TA was determined by titration of seawater with hydrochloric acid (0.1 N HCl), while DIC was measured coulometrically. During cruise M153, DIC was measured with a cavity ringdown spectrometer (Picarro G2201-I, 1510CFIDS2047_v1.0) attached to a Liaison A0301 and an AutoMate Prep device. Both the VINDTA 3C and Picarro systems were calibrated using Certified Reference Material provided by A. Dickson (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, USA). Nutrient samples were filtered through disposable syringe filters (0.45 µm) after sampling, filled pre-rinsed 50 ml PE bottles and kept frozen at -20°C until on-shore analysis using a continuous-flow injection system (Skalar SAN plus System) according to methods described by Grasshoff et al. (1999).

Beschreibung: This dataset provides Pediastrum data for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Percent-abundances per taxon (%), total count sum per sample (#/ml) and Pediastrum flux (#/cm²/a) are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The Pediastrum data provides information on Lateglacial ecosystem dynamics and the dataset was used to interpret changes in aquatic diversity as well as in palaeolimnological conditions. A dataset of lateglacial pollen samples from lake Haemelsee (see https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.939693) was additionally analysed for subfossil remains of Pediastrum, where identification of the Pediastrum taxa mainly followed Komárek and Jankovská (2001) with further taxonomic revisions as summarized in Turner et al. (2014). Our final Pediastrum dataset includes 100 samples, as samples with fewer than 25 identified Pediastrum coenobia were excluded from further analyses. Pediastrum concentrations were calculated by comparing the number of Lycopodium spores encountered during pollen analyses to the number of spores added to the sample. All analyses were performed in the laboratories of the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany.

Beschreibung: Here, we compiled data obtained from a research cruise with the German RV Meteor (M153) and an oceanographic mooring to demonstrate that a nutrient trapping zone develops in a narrow belt along the coast during the main upwelling season in the southern Benguela Upwelling System (SBUS). It modifies links between the strength of upwelling, productivity and the intensity of the oxygen minim zone (OMZ) in the SBUS. During the cruise M153 shipboard measurements were conducted along a station grid in the SBUS between February 16th and 28th, 2019. This included CTD casts, one TRIAXUS transect and the deployment of one mooring equipped with a Mini Dot Oxygen Sensor (MDO) and Hydrobios MST-12 sediment trap at water-depth of approximately 95.5 m. In order to study the diurnal cycle, four CTD casts were conducted between February 18th and 19th at station 7 close to the mooring location while mooring data and publically available satellite data on sea surface temperature and primary production were used to study the seasonal cycles of the nutrient trapping zone.

Beschreibung: Data presented here were collected between January 2020 to December 2020 within the research unit DynaCom (Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: From island biogeography to metaecosystems, https://uol.de/dynacom/ ) of the Universities of Oldenburg, Göttingen, and Münster, the iDiv Leipzig and the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer. Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Temperature in the sediment surface layer (in approximately 0.05m depth) was measured with DEFI-T miniature temperature recorders (JFE Advantech Co., Ltd., Tokyo; DEFI-T). The manufacturer pre-calibrated temperature recorders and were installed on the experimental islands and in salt-marsh enclosed plots at different elevation levels. Recorded data were internally logged until the readout with the DEFI Series software (V1.02). The position was derived from a portable DGPS-system. Date and Time is given in UTC. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, defined as data exhibiting changes of more than two standard deviations within one time step, and (c) visually checks.

Beschreibung: Small copepod genera play an important role in marine food webs and biogeochemical fluxes but have been neglected in many studies. Abundance, biomass and carbon consumption rates of small- (〈1 mm prosome length (PL)), medium- (1-1.5 mm PL) and large-sized (〉2 mm PL) copepods along a cross-shelf transect in the southern Benguela upwelling system were determined using rather high taxonomic resolution. Zooplankton samples were collected with a Multinet (Hydrobios Multinet midi, 5 nets with 200 µm meshsize) during the Meteor cruise M153 in February/March 2019. Calanoids contributed on average 55 ± 19% to total copepod abundance and 82 ± 13% to total copepod biomass. Small-sized Oithona spp. (119/114 mg C m-2 d-1) and Clauso-/Paracalanidae (87/263 mg C m-2 d-1) as well as large-sized Calanoides natalis (47/193 mg C m-2 d-1) were the dominant consumers at the most inshore stations. Small and medium-sized copepodite stages of Metridia lucens were also important, especially towards the continental slope. At offshore stations, Para-/Clausocalanidae (17-27 mg C m-2 d-1), Oithona spp. (9-16 mg C m-2 d-1), Pleuromamma spp. (0-16 mg C m-2 d-1), Calanus agulhensis (0-15 mg C m-2 d-1), Acartia spp. (0-12 mg C m-2 d-1), C. natalis (0-10 mg C m-2 d-1) and M. lucens (2-6 mg C m-2 d-1) were dominant consumers. Hence, usually small- and medium-sized copepods dominated total copepod ingestion, emphasizing that inadequate representation of small copepods will lead to significant underestimations and misinterpretations of the functioning of zooplankton communities, and finally to inadequate biogeochemical models.

Beschreibung: This article, related to the paper published by Zanola et al. (2024), provides the comprehensive dataset for the first high-resolution δ18O and δ13C records across the Piacenzian – Gelasian boundary (circa 2.6 Ma) in the Gelasian type-area of Monte San Nicola, Sicily (Southern Italy). 230 samples from the lower portion of the "Mandorlo" section of Capraro et al. (2022) were investigated for reconstructing the climate variability of the Central Mediterranean region during the onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG). Among these, 30 low-resolution samples (sampling pace of 33 cm) were employed for reconstructing a low-resolution record for G. ruber and C. pachyderma, while 200 samples (sampling pace of 5 cm) were handpicked for achieving a high-resolution benthic δ18O and δ13C record for Uvigerina spp. Wavelet power spectrum analysis of the isotopic record highlights a clear signal from components in both the orbital and sub-orbital (millennial) time domains.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides the sedimentological, palaeoecological and geochemical data for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Loss-on-ignition, XRF, n-alkane, delta-Deuterium and GDGT measurements as well as counts of chironomids, diatoms and Pediastrum are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The data provides information on the Lateglacial development of the landscape around lake Hämelsee, the local climate dynamics, and the changes in the lake ecosystem itself and has been used to identify the effects of external drivers on biodiversity parameters (alpha diversity, compositional turnover and productivity). Cores were retrieved from the lake using a 3-m long UWITEC piston corer deployed from a floating coring platform during field work in July 2013. Following LOI analysis, ITRAX core scanning and sampling for thin section analysis, core segments spanning between 1325-1687 cm sediment depth were subsampled into contiguous 1-cm-thick subsamples. These subsamples formed the basis for the subsequent chronological, sedimentological and palaeoecological analyses and were processed in various laboratories as specified below. Where appropriate, datasets are processed through amalgamation of consecutive samples to e.g. ensure high count sums or concentrations.

The cruise took place between 25.05.2016 and 28.06.2016 in the North Atlanic Ocean (WHEN). The survey data contain MBES measurements of the Fictional Bank canyon (working area). No bathymetric measurements of Fictional Bank canyon were found in international databases prior to the cruise (WHY). To enhance MBES data accuracy, two sound velocity profile casts were conducted in the vicinity of the working area prior to the survey using sound velocity profiler AML Oceanographic (WHAT, WHEN & WHY). After processing, these data were directly imported into the MBES Acquisition software Kongsberg SIS Seafloor Information System (WHEN & HOW). Raw data were being converted to MB-System format. Data were manually edited for false measurements and sound velocity (SVP) corrected using data acquired during the cruise. A raster was calculated and stored in GeoTIFF format.

Beschreibung: Temperature is a major factor for the global biogeographic pattern of marine benthic algal species and their loss has serious consequences for ecosystems. Local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity of species can result in intraspecific differences of thermal tolerance, and population loss might not only occur at thermal trailing edges. Understanding the underlying physiological and biochemical response mechanisms is from major importance. Therefore, we run the same short-term experiment with field sporophytes of Saccharina latissima from five locations along the European coast (Spitsbergen, Bodø, Bergen, Helgoland, Locmariaquer). We increased each respective mean summer temperature (control, ±0°C) by +2, +4 and +6°C to mimic realistic local heatwave events. The maximum photosynthetic quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm; Imaging-PAM, Walz GmbH Mess- und Regeltechnik, Effeltrich, Germany) was monitored every day. For growth, the size of the algal discs was photographed every second day, analyzed with ImageJ (Version 1.52a). Absolute concentrations of all pigments were analyzed using a HPLC. Afterwards, the pool sizes, the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle (DPS), and the ratios were calculated. The C:N ratio, total nitrogen and total carbon content were analyzed with an elemental analyzer. Mannitol concentration was also analyzed in a HPLC. Phlorotannins were analyzed using the photometric Folin-Ciocalteu method.

Beschreibung: Temperature is a major driver for the geographical distribution of organisms, such as the foundation kelp species Saccharina latissima. Globally rising sea surface temperatures and intensification of marine heatwaves have already led to local loss of kelp populations. We investigated temporal variations in the thermal susceptibility of S. latissima. Therefore, we assessed the stress responses of field sporophytes sampled from Helgoland (German Bight) to an experimental heat wave scenario in June 2018, August 2018, and August 2019. The experiment in June 2018 was conducted by Diehl et al. (2021a) and the respective dataset (Diehl et al. 2021b, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.931637) was re-evaluated for this study. Treatment temperatures (18, 20, 22, 24 °C) were based on 18 °C summer mean sea surface temperature on Helgoland as control, and Δ+2, Δ+4, Δ+6 °C as temperature-amplitude treatments, mimicking marine heatwaves. After a three-days wound healing phase, seven days of temperature acclimation (day 0-7) and seven days of temperature treatment (day 8-14) followed. The survival, growth and maximum photosynthetic quantum yield (Fv/Fm; June 2018/August 2018: ImagingPAM, Walz Imaging PAM Maxi Version M-series; August 2019: Portable Chlorophyll Fluorometer PAM-2100, Heinz Walz GmbH, Effeltrich, Germany) were measured on day 0 and day 14. To highlight changes as response to the experimental heat wave, physiological parameters were shown as percentage of the initial values. Absolute concentrations of pigments were analyzed using a HPLC. Beschreibung: Kelps (Phaeophyceae, Laminariales) function as ecosystem engineers along many Arctic rocky shores. With ongoing climate change, the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves are increasing. Further, extensive meltwater plumes darken Arctic fjords. It was the aim of this study to analyse the future development of Arctic kelp forest ecosystems. We conducted a laboratory experiment, in which we determined physiological and biochemical responses of Agarum clathratum and Saccharina latissima to a marine heatwave scenario (4, 7, and 10°C) being acclimated to either low-light (3 µmol photons m²/s) or in-situ-light (120 µmol photons m²/s) conditions. Grown sporophytes were sampled in Nuup Kangerlua, Greenland from a sampling depth between 7-10 m. Meristematic discs were cut (diameter 2 cm) and distributed equally between treatments and replicates. The discs acclimated to the light conditions for two days, before the 12 days heatwave scenario started, followed by a five-day recovery period. Maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) measurements were measured every second day, using a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer (Portable Chlorophyll Fluorometer PAM-2100, Heinz Walz GmbH, Effeltrich, Germany). The following kelp response parameters were measured before (day 6), at the peak (day 18) and after (day 23) the experimental heatwave. Growth was analysed by measuring the discs dry weight (g). Rapid light curves were measured with a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer (Portable Chlorophyll Fluorometer PAM-2100, Heinz Walz GmbH, Effeltrich, Germany), using irradiance steps between 0-611 µmol photons m²/s to derive photosynthesis vs. irradiance curve parameters (Pmax, alpha, EK). Dark respiration and net photosynthetic rates were measured with a 4-channel optode set-up (FireStingO2 Fibre-Optic Oxygen Meter FSO2-C4, PyroScience Sensor technology, Aachen, Germany) by analysing the oxygen evolution in response to different light intensities within a 25 ml Schott bottle, each containing meristematic discs. Pigment content was analysed with a High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC, LaChromElite® system, L-2200 autosampler (chilled), DA-detetctor L-2450; VWR-Hitachi International GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany). Total phlorotannin concentration was analysed with the Folin-Ciocalteau assay, using a phloroglucinol dilution series (C6H6O3, Sigma-Aldrich: 0–1000 µg/ml).

Beschreibung: Current velocities of the upper water column along the cruise track of R/V Sonne cruise SO298 were collected by a vessel-mounted 38 kHz RDI Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The ADCP transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode (WM10) with a bin size of 32.00 m, a blanking distance of 16.00 m, and a total of 55 bins, covering the depth range between 54.0 m and 1782.0 m. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (-0.2504° +/- 0.4404°) and scale factor (1.0012 +/- 0.0095) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The velocity data were averaged in time using an average interval of 60 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on following threshold criteria: abs(UC) or abs(VC) 〉 2.2 m/s, rms(UC_z) or rms(VC_z) 〉 0.2.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides concentrations of n-alkanes for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Concentrations of n-alkanes (ug/g), the Carbon Preference Index (CPI) and the Average Chain Length C21-C33 (ACL) are all presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The n-alkane concentration data provides information on the Lateglacial dynamics of local plant productivity, whereas the ACL and CPI of the sediment samples were determined to estimate origin and preservation condition. A total of 167 samples from the Lateglacial section of the core were processed using a Dionex 350 accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was used to separate the extracts into an aliphatic, aromatic and alcohol/fatty acid fraction. Separation was achieved by loading the extracts on activated silica columns and eluting each fraction with hexane, hexane/DCM (1:1 v/v) and DCM/MeOH (9:1 v/v) successively. The aliphatic fraction, containing the n-alkanes, was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The peak areas for each n-alkane homologue were compared to the peak areas from an internal standard (5α-androstane) and an external n-alkane standard mixture for absolute quantification. We refer to Rach et al. (2020) for further details on the exact analytical setup. All measurements were performed in the laboratories of GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides counts of chironomid head capsules for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Counts per taxon are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP), and the total amount of material used for analysis (in g) is provided as well. The chironomid data provides information on Lateglacial ecosystem dynamics and were used to interpret changes in aquatic diversity as well as in local climate conditions. A total of 123 samples from the Lateglacial section of the core were treated with warm KOH (10%) to de-flocculate the material and subsequently rinsed through a sieve with a 100-µm mesh. Chironomid head capsules (HCs) were hand-picked from the residue using a Bogorov sorting tray and mounted on permanent microscope slides using Euparal mounting medium. HCs were identified using Brooks et al. (2007) and the dataset presented here has been matched to the taxonomy of the merged Norwegian/Swiss chironomid-climate calibration dataset. Several samples had low chironomid concentrations and for these we amalgamated adjacent samples (within lithological boundaries) to reach a minimum count sum of 50 head capsules per sample. This process resulted in the final chironomid dataset that is presented here, containing 97 samples. All analyses were performed in the laboratories of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Beschreibung: Snow height was measured by the Snow Buoy 2022S110, an autonomous platform, installed in the Atka Bay, Antarctic during Antarctic Fast Ice Network 2022 (AFIN 2022). The resulting time series describes the evolution of snow height as a function of place and time between 29 Jun 2022 and 29 Jan 2023 in sample intervals of 1 hour. The Snow Buoy consists of four independent sonar measurements representing the area (approx. 10 m**2) around the buoy. The buoy was installed on fast ice. In addition to snow height, geographic position (GPS), barometric pressure, air temperature, and an internal ice temperature were measured. Negative values of snow height occur if surface ablation continues into the sea ice. Thus, these measurements describe the position of the sea ice surface relative to the original snow-ice interface. Differences between single sensors indicate small-scale variability of the snow pack around the buoy. The data set has been processed and contains quality flags for different kinds for erroneous data. Flag values are the sum of individual error codes. The value of 0 refers to no error. Quality flag, position: The geographic position is flagged +1 if the drift velocity, as derived from the GPS longitude and latitude, exceeds a threshold of 10 deg latitude or 50 deg longitude per time step; +2 if the position exceeds extreme values, such as longitude 〉 360 deg; +4 if the position is exactly 0.0. Quality flag, snow: The snow height is flagged for each sensor +1 for manual corrections during processing (e.g. sensor issues); +2 if the snow accumulation exceeds 0.1 m per hour; +4 if the difference in snow height is larger than 0.03 m compared to values within the last and next 2 hours; +32 if the value exceeds the height of sensor on the platform at 1.5 m. Quality flag, temperature: The air temperature is flagged +1 for manual corrections during processing (e.g. sensor issues); + 32 if the value is below – 50 °C. Quality flag, pressure: The barometric pressure is flagged +1 for manual corrections during processing (e.g. sensor issues).

Beschreibung: Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems, called self-cleaning monitoring boxes (SMBs). Usually, the SMBs are changed after ~12 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 4 m depth, salinity is estimated within the SMB from conductivity and interior temperature. Temperature and salinity were calibrated against CTD data from 4 m depth. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides Loss-on-ignition (LOI) data for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. LOI values (%) are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The LOI data was used to provide information on LGIT landscape dynamics at lake Hämelsee. A total of 369 samples were analyzed for LOI, providing a continuous 1-cm-resolution record across the LGIT and early Holocene sections of the HAEM-B record. Subsamples of 1 cm3 were dried in a 105°C oven for 24 hrs before being placed in a furnace at 550 °C for 4 hrs. Loss-on-ignition was calculated by comparing the dry weight of the samples before and after combustion at 550 °C following Heiri et al. (2001) and results are expressed as a percentage. The analyses were performed in the laboratories of Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides geochemical composition data for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013, determined using an Itrax X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner. Selected geochemical major and minor elements (Ti, Si, Ca, Fe) expressed as counts per second, as elemental ratios, as centered log-ratios (CLR) and as log-ratios are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The XRF data was used to provide information on LGIT landscape dynamics at lake Hämelsee. The geochemical composition of the sediments was determined on fresh core splits using an Itrax X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner equipped with a Cr tube. Measurements were performed at 200 µm resolution during 20s exposure time per step at 30 kV tube voltage and 40 mA tube current. The analyses were performed in the laboratories of GFZ, Potsdam.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) concentrations for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. GDGTs concentrations (ng/g) are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The GDGTs dataset was used to calculate the GDGT-0/crenarchaeol ratio, which was interpreted to represent lake water oxygenation, which, given the local settings, was likely driven by changes in windiness. Additionally, the GDGT dataset was used to calculate the degree of methylation of 5-methyl brGDGTs (MBT'5me), which can be used to reconstruct past temperature change through translation MBT'5me into mean temperature of the months above freezing. As such, the GDGT data provides information on LGIT climate dynamics at lake Hämelsee. Of the 167 samples used for lipid extraction (see https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.964524), the alcohol/fatty acid fraction of 94 samples was further processed to analyse glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), which are membrane lipids of certain archaea and bacteria (Schouten et al., 2013). In short, a known amount of internal standard was added to each fraction, which was then redissolved in hexane:isopropanol 99:1 and passed over a 0.45 µm PTFE filter prior to injection on a Agilent 1260 Infinity ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph coupled to an Agilent 6130 single quadrupole mass spectrometer following the settings and elution protocol of Hopmans et al. (2016). A minimum peak area of 3000 and a signal-to-noise ratio of 〉3 was maintained as detection limit. Quantification of the GDGTs is based on the assumption that the mass spectrometer equally responds to the GDGTs and the internal standard. All analyses were performed in the laboratories of Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides delta-Deuterium data for the Lateglacial sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Hämelsee (Germany) in 2013. Compound-specific hydrogen isotope ratios (expressed as δD) normalized to the Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW) as well as measurement uncertainties (expressed as SD) are presented against both depth (m) and age (cal yr. BP). The data provides information on the Lateglacial development of local climate dynamics: the plant-wax derived δD signal is typically considered to reflect the hydrogen-isotopic composition of plant leaf water and, by extension, precipitation. We therefore interpret the trends in δD record here as an indicator of past hydrological change (cf Sachse et al., 2012). A total of 167 samples from the Lateglacial section of the core were processed using a Dionex 350 accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was used to separate the extracts into an aliphatic, aromatic and alcohol/fatty acid fraction. Prior to isotope ratio measurement, the aliphatic fraction was further fractionated on a Pasteur pipette column containing activated AgNO3 (10%) coated silica gel. Compound-specific hydrogen isotope ratios (expressed as δD) were subsequently measured on an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. All δD values are normalized to the Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW) scale using a linear regression function between measured and certified δD values of a standard mix. We refer to Rach et al. (2020) for further details on the exact analytical setup. All measurements were performed in the laboratories of GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam.

Beschreibung: In the present paper, the existence and location of the type series of the Japanese dancing mouse or waltzer, Mus wagneri variety rotans Droogleever Fortuyn, 1912, are established, and a lectotype is designated. Available type specimens are measured, and some morphological parameters, sex, and general condition of the specimens are recorded. A literature survey was conducted, and an attempt is made to clarify the position of M. wagneri variety rotans in the taxonomy of Mus. A genetic analysis suggests that the type series of the Japanese dancing mouse represent a crossbred, or derivation of a crossbred, between the original Japanese dancing mouse of Mus musculus molossinus Temminck 1844 origin and European fancy or laboratory mice of Mus musculus domesticus Schwarz & Schwarz, 1943 origin. Much of their genome was replaced and occupied by Mus musculus domesticus type genome, probably through extensive breeding with European mice.

Beschreibung: Here we report a well-preserved isolated physeteroid tooth of Late Miocene age from Liessel, the Netherlands. The presence of several morphological features allows attribution to the macroraptorial physeteroids. Size and morphology are to some extent comparable to Zygophyseter and almost identical to the primarily tooth-based Tortonian taxon Scaldicetus caretti. However, the genus Scaldicetus was declared unutilizable, which is supported here with an overview of modern classifications of Scaldicetus species and specimens. Despite the restrictions, the type species S. caretti is still valid, although the name is to be restricted to the type material. Based on its morphological resemblance, the tooth is identified as Physeteroidea indet. cf. Scaldicetus caretti.

Beschreibung: The genus Micronecta Kirkaldy, 1897 is the most species-rich genus in the family Micronectidae, containing more than 160 species. Micronecta is currently divided into 11 subgenera, five of which are monotypic. Moreover, the subgenus Micronecta is an empirical mixture group. The definitions of some subgenera were based on only a few aberrant morphological features, which are specializations with few phylogenetic significances. The relationship between these subgenera remains unclear. In this study, we newly sequenced mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) and nuclear rDNAs (nrDNAs) for 13 Micronecta species, representing seven subgenera, and those for ten other water bugs. Our phylogenetic analyses showed that the subgenus Lundbladella represents the sister group to all other studied subgenera of Micronecta. The subgenus Unguinecta was the sister group to the clade that contains Dichaetonecta and Sigmonecta. More importantly, the subgenus Micronecta represents a paraphyletic group, which further forms a monophyletic group together with the subgenera Basileonecta and Ctenonecta. This is for the first time that the phylogeny of the genus Micronecta was investigated based on molecular data and the paraphyly of the subgenus Micronecta was revealed. Such evidence suggested the necessity of the revision of the taxonomic system of the genus in the future, and may also serve as a reference for the delimitation of subgeneric characters.
