Description: The advancement of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) has enabled monitoring of mass transport and solid-Earth deformation processes with unprecedented accuracy. Coseismic deformation is modelled as an elastic response of the solid Earth to an internal dislocation. Self-gravitating spherical Earth models can be employed in modelling regional to global scale deformations. Recent seismic tomography and high-pressure/high-temperature experiments have revealed finer-scale lateral heterogeneities in the elasticity and density structures within the Earth, which motivates us to quantify the effects of such finer structures on coseismic deformation. To achieve this, fully numerical approaches including the Finite Element Method (FEM) have often been used. In our previous study, we presented a spectral FEM, combined with an iterative perturbation method, to consider lateral heterogeneities in the bulk and shear moduli for surface loading. The distinct feature of this approach is that the deformation of the entire sphere is modelled in the spectral domain with finite elements dependent only on the radial coordinate. By this, self-gravitation can be treated without special treatments employed when using an ordinary FEM. In this study, we extend the formulation so that it can deal with lateral heterogeneities in density in the case of coseismic deformation. We apply this approach to a longer-wavelength vertical deformation due to a large earthquake. The result shows that the deformation for a laterally heterogeneous density distribution is suppressed mainly where the density is larger, which is consistent with the fact that self-gravitation reduces longer-wavelength deformations for 1-D models. The effect on the vertical displacement is relatively small, but the effect on the gravity change could amount to the same order of magnitude of a given heterogeneity if the horizontal scale of the heterogeneity is large enough.

Description: Present day system Earth research utilizes the tool ‘Scientific Drilling’ to access samples and to monitor deep Earth processes that cannot be tackled by other scientific means. Unlike most laboratory experiments or computer modelling, drilling projects are massive field endeavours requiring intense collaboration of researchers with engineers and service providers. In the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program, ICDP, more than seventy drilling projects have been conducted, from multiyear big research programs to short, smallscale deployments such as lake drilling projects. ICDP has supported these projects not only through grants covering field-related costs, but also through a variety of scientific-technical services and support, as well as active help in data management, outreach and publication. These services are described in this booklet. Due to its instructional character, we call it the ICDP Primer.

Description: The Snow and Ice Mass Balance Array (SIMBA) is a thermistor string type IMB (Jackson et al., 2013) which measures the environment temperature SIMBA-ET and temperature change around the thermistors after a weak heating applied to each sensor (SIMBA-HT). Totally, there were 22 SIMBAs deployed in the Arcitic Ocean over the Distributed Network (DN) and the Central Observatory during the Legs 1a, 1 and 3 of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) campaign. The SIMBA thermistor chain is 5.12 m long, and equipped with 256 thermistors (Maxim Integrated DS28EA00) at 0.02 m spacing. Based on a manual identification method, the SIMBA-ET and SIMBA-HT were processed to yield snow depth and ice thickness. Here, we combined the two optimal methods (the ET vertical gradient and HT rise ratio) to reduce the uncertainty. To keep the consistency, we use the snow or ice surface, consequentially the snow depth, determined by the ET vertical gradient. The formations of snow ice and superposed ice are not considered in this data set. That is to say, the value of snow depth includes the layers of snow ice at two sites (2019T56 and 2019T72). The superposed ice was generally negligible. We used the HT rise ratio to determine the ice-water interface, consequentially the ice thickness. Overall, the measurement accuracy was 0.02 m for both the snow depth and ice thickness. After the snow cover melted over, the negative values for the snow depth indicate the onset of ice surface melt. The submitted data package include 19 data files (for each buoy) and 1 buoy information file.

Description: Marine sediment core GL-1248 was collected from the continental slope off northern northeastern Brazil by Petrobras oil company. Sediment samples (154 in total) were collected with 2 cm wide scoops at every 10 cm from the uppermost 16 m (covering the the last 113 thousand years) of the marine sediment core GL-1248. Samples were oven‐dried at 60°C, precisely weighted to 0.5 g and treated with H2O2 27% and HCl 10% to remove organic matter and calcium carbonate, respectively. The remaining content was diluted in alcohol and three aliquots per sample were mounted on stainless steel discs with four drops of the homogenized solution of alcohol and silt/clay sediments. GL-1248 luminescence measurements were performed on an automated Lexsyg Smart TL/OSL reader equipped with blue and infrared LEDs, Hoya U-340 filters for light detection in the ultraviolet band (270-390 nm) using a photomultiplier and beta radiation sources (90Sr/90Y) with doses rate of 0.116 Gy s-1 at the Luminescence and Gamma Spectrometry Laboratory of the Institute of Geosciences, University of São Paulo, Brazil. The sensitivity representative of the 110°C thermoluminesce (TL) peak of quartz considered the 80–120°C integration range from the TL curve. The 80-120°C TL sensitivity was calculated as a percentage of the total TL emission (0-250°C) and using the background TL curve. The mean of three measured aliquots represents the TL sensitivity of each sample. The OSL sensitivity was calculated by integrating the first second of light emission and the last ten seconds as background. GL-1248 TL sensitivity data were compared to previously published data obtained from marine sediment core GeoB16206-1 (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.904357). Marine sediment core GeoB16206-1 was analyzed in a different luminescence reader (i.e. RisØ OSL/TL DA-20 reader) and using different regeneration dose. In order to avoid machine artifacts and the influence of dose size on sensitivity, we normalized the TL data output from both marine sediment cores and produced a composite record. Description: Data presented here were collected between January 2021 to December 2021 within the research unit DynaCom (Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: From island biogeography to metaecosystems, https://uol.de/dynacom/ ) of the Universities of Oldenburg, Göttingen, and Münster, the iDiv Leipzig and the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer. Experimental islands and saltmarsh enclosed plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of the island of Spiekeroog. Meteorological data were collected near the experimental setup, with a locally installed weather station located approximately 500m north of the southern shoreline. The weather station system used here was a ClimaSensor US 4.920x.00.00x that was pre-calibrated by the manufacturer (Adolf Thies GmbH & Co. KG, D-Göttingen). Data were recorded and saved within the Meteo-Online (V4.5.0.20253) software in a sampling interval of 1 min, with an averaging time of 10 s. Date and time were given in UTC and the position was derived from the internal GPS system. Data handling was performed according to Zielinski et al. (2018): Post-processing of collected data was done using MATLAB (R2018a). Quality control was performed by (a) erasing data covering maintenance activities, (b) removing outliers, defined as data exhibiting changes of more than two standard deviations within one time step, and (c) visually checks.

Description: This collection contains permafrost related measurements in the Mackenzie Delta, NWT, Canada from the MOSES (Modular Observation Solutions for Earth Systems) field campaign in September 2021. The field campaign was focused on three subaquatic sites: a small thermokarst lake along the ITH just south of Trail Valley Creek, "Lake 3", an elongated lake with known methane occurence in the outer Mackenzie Delta, "Swiss Cheese Lake", and north and south of Tuktoyaktuk Island. At "Swiss Cheese Lake", we measured methane and CO2 concentrations in surface water and in the air above the lake, lake bed temperatures and detailed bathymetry. At "Lake 3" we measured active layer thickness on the lake banks, lake bed temperatures, and detailed bathymetry, as well as an ERT survey to estimate the talik depth below the lake. North and south of Tuktoyaktuk Island, we measured active layer thickness and sea bed temperatures and did an extensive ERT survey to obtain the depth of the subsea permafrost table. An additional passive seismic survey was carried out and the data is available at https://doi.org/10.5880/GIPP.202199.1.

Description: The dataset comprises data on the lipid composition (carboxylic acids and alkanols) and stable isotope values (δ13C and δ15N) obtained from fresh stomach oils and sub-stomach oil deposits of snow petrels (Pagodroma nivea). The samples were collected in different un-glaciated regions of East Antarctica (Dronning Maud Land, Mac. Robertson Land, Prince Charles Mountains and Windmill Islands). The stomach oils and sub-fossil stomach oil deposits were analyzed to investigate the paleodiet of the birds and to relate information of paleodiet to past environmental conditions. The alkanoic acids and alkanols were analysed from total lipid extracts by capillary gas chromatography with GC-FID (Gas chromatograph with Flame ionization detector) and GC-MS (single quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with gas chromatograph). Total lipid extracts were analysed for the δ13C isotopic composition. The un-soluble residues, retained after lipid extraction, was analysed for δ13C and δ15N isotopic composition. This work was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in the framework of the priority program "Antarctic Research with comparative investigations in Arctic ice areas" (grants BE 4764/5-1 and BE 4764/6-1).

Description: The dataset is based on 50 soft carbonate sediment samples from the reef island Barrang Lompo in the Spermonde Archipelago, Sulawesi, SE Asia. The subsurface samples were obtained by percussion drilling at 5 coring locations on the island. From each coring location, 10 samples were retrieved in 1 m intervals, thus providing samples from a maximum depth of 10 m below surface at each site (1 m, 2 m, ..., 10 m) using percussion drilling (jackhammer: WACKER BH 23, Wacker Neuson SE, probe: direct push corer with internal liner (1m length & 46 mm diameter)). Samples were taken from lowest 10 cm of probe. Examples: BL1-1 is sample from location BL1 in depth interval 90-100 cm. BL4-7 is sample from location BL4 in depth interval 690-700 cm. Laboratory data was collected between 2019 and 2021. The provided dataset contains grain size (raw and processed data; using GRADISTAT by Blott & Pye, 2001), skeletal component analysis (counting of fragments, 500 per sample; raw data) and facies determination (based on grain size and skeletal composition) of each sample. Additionally, the dataset provides raw and calibrated radiocarbon ages from 20 selected samples (calibration curve by Heaton et al. 2020; marine reservoir correction by Southon et al. 2002; calibration tool OxCal v4.4 by Bronk Ramsey, 2009). For the radiocarbon analyses, picked and pooled foraminifera of the genus Calcarina were chosen. These 20 samples were furthermore classified in terms of abrasion (1=very good preserved,... 4=very poorly preserved), following suggestions by Fellowes et al. 2017. The calibrated ages cover the earlier to late Holocene (~7,000 to 2,000 years BP). The collected data provides information of reef-derived sedimentation in the Holocene in the Spermonde Archipelago. It provides insight into the ecological background and the origin of the skeletal sediments.

Description: To comprehensively document the δ13C content of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), we used high-resolution thermocline-dwelling foraminiferal δ13C data obtained from three distinct marine sediment cores situated in the NW, SW, and SE regions of the South Atlantic. Our dataset enables a comprehensive examination of millennial-scale variations in SACW δ13C content across the entire basin. Notably, the thermocline δ13C records from the SE and NW sectors of the South Atlantic consistently exhibit concurrent negative excursions during most of the Heinrich Stadials (HS), a pattern that contrasts sharply with the absence of such negative excursions in the thermocline δ13C record from the SW sector of the South Atlantic

Description: Solar radiation over and under sea ice was measured by radiation station 2020R21, an autonomous platform, installed on a drifting melt pond in the Arctic Ocean during MOSAiC (Leg 5) 2019/20. The resulting time series describes radiation measurements as a function of place and time between 27 August 2020 and 14 November 2020 in sample intervals of 1 hour. The radiation measurements have been performed with spectral radiometers. All data are given in full spectral resolution interpolated to 1.0 nm, and integrated over the entire wavelength range (broadband, total: 320 to 950 nm). Two sensors, solar irradiance and upward reflected solar irradiance, were mounted on a on a platform about 1 m above the sea ice surface. The third sensor was mounted 0.5 m underneath the sea ice measuring the downward transmitted irradiance. Along with the radiation measurements, this autonomous platform consisted of a lightchain, which measured counts of red, green and blue light at 49 positions at hourly intervals. In addition, the evolution of snow height is measured at hourly intervals. All times are given in UTC.

This work was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in the framework of the priority program “Antarctic Research with comparative investigations in Arctic ice areas” (grants BE 4764/5-1 and BE 4764/6-1).

Description: We would like to assess how the ELRA models behaves in comparison to both Self-Gravitating Viscoelastic solid Earth Models (SGVEMs) outputs and to observations. First, we compare the present-day uplift rates predicted when a spatially-uniform ELRA model is forced with the ICE-6G (Argus et al., 2014) and W12 ice loading histories (Whitehouse et al., 2012a,2012b) with the uplift rates reproduced in Fig 6a from Argus et al. (2014) and Fig 10a from Whitehouse et al. (2012b), respectively, where SGVEMs with uniformly stratified solid Earth are used. Next, we compare the present-day uplift rates reproduced by a spatially-uniform ELRA model forced with two different ice loading histories (ICE-6G; Argus et al. (2014) and W12; Whitehouse et al. (2012a,2012b)) for each of the 2000 Monte Carlo ELRA configurations of our ensemble with GPS observations of present-day uplift rates from Whitehouse et al. (2012b).

Description: Solar radiation over and under sea ice was measured by radiation station 2020R12, an autonomous platform, installed on drifting Second-Year-Ice (SYI) in the Arctic Ocean during MOSAiC (Leg 3) 2019/20. The resulting time series describes radiation measurements as a function of place and time between 24 April 2020 and 07 August 2020 in sample intervals of 1 hour.

Description: Here we present physico-chemical and biological data collected during 12 research cruises conducted in SW Pacific waters east of Aotearoa New Zealand between 2009 and 2017. Nutrient and chla samples were collected mainly with Niskin bottles deployed with a Seabird 9plus CTD rosette. A small fraction of the data presented were sampled also from manually deployed Niskin bottles and the RV Tangaroa Underway Flow-Through System (TUFTS) system equipped with temperature, salinity and fluorescence sensors. The dataset includes measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen and transmissivity obtained with a Seabird 9plus; inorganic nutrients (dissolved reactive phosphorus, dissolved reactive silica, nitrate + nitrite); total chlorophyll a (chla) filtered onto GFF filter, size fractionated chla (0.2, 2, 20 microns) obtained by sequential filtration of seawater through 20, 2 and 0.2 micron polycarbonate filters; and derived mixed-layer depth estimated following temperature and density criteria. The depth of the euphotic zone included was calculated from chla concentration following the approach described in Maritorena and Morel, 2001 (doi:10.1029/2000jc000319). These data were used to provide oceanographic context to DNA metabarcoding analysis of 18S rRNA V4 region that was carried out on DNA samples collected in parallel to nutrient and chla samples. The study resulting from this analysis has been submitted to Progress in Oceanography.

Description: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) data were collected by the Perennial Acoustic Observatory in the Antarctic Ocean (PALAOA) near Neumayer Station III at 70.5028° S, 8.2057° W, on the Ekström ice shelf, Antarctica. This long-term observatory was set up in 2005 (Kindermann et al. 2007, hdl:10013/epic.30936.d001). After modifications of the hardware setup in December 2014, PALAOA collected passive acoustic data using a Sono.Vault recorder (manufactured by develogic GmbH, Hamburg, Germany). From 01 January 2022 to 27 February 2022, PALAOA recorded continuously at a sample rate of 96 kHz, at 155 m depth. Recording ended due to the breakoff of part of the ice shelf in February 2022, which damaged the recording hardware (see also Report on Expedition PS129, https://doi.org/10.57738/BzPM_0776_2023). Further details about the data acquisition and processing of this data set can be found in the accompanying metadata file (see Additional metadata) as well as the data processing report (see Data Processing Report). Passive acoustic data archived here represent data processing Level 1+, according to the standards defined in the associated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Glossary (Thomisch et al. 2023a). Further information on data processing with regard to data preparation and standardization can be found in the associated SOP Part 1: Data preparation and standardization (Thomisch et al. 2023b). We thankfully acknowledge the support of the Neumayer Station overwintering teams, and in particular of the radio operators, in maintaining and operating PALAOA.

Description: Here, we present a global compilation of previously reported sightings of the rare planktic foraminifer Globorotalia cavernula Bé, 1967 as well as new observations of live-collected specimens from the Southern Ocean (Subantarctic south of Africa). The goal of this synthesis is to provide the geographic and stratigraphic context needed to investigate the past and present-day distributions of this rare but possibly under-recognized species. The previous records include modern occurrences in the water column (collected by plankton net tows and a single sediment trap) and seafloor sediments ranging in age from recent to Eocene. Seafloor sediment samples were collected by dredge, sediment grabs and core-tops. Deeper sediments came from drilling cores. Existing databases provided a foundation for this compilation, particularly ForCenS for surface sediments (Siccha & Kucera, 2017) and FORCIS for water-column collections (de Garidel-Thoron et al., 2022; Chaabane et al., 2022, 2023). These records were supplemented with occurrences from the literature, PANGEA, and cruise reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) / Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). Searches were conducted in October 2022 using Google Scholar, GBIF, EOL (Encyclopedia of Life, "http://eol.org", which includes records from the Smithsonian NMNH). Where available, we include information on the abundance of G. cavernula in each collection, and indicate whether photographic evidence (or drawings) could be found to support the identification. Globorotalia crozetensis Thompson, 1973 (reclassified as G. cavernula by Brummer & Kučera, 2022) and closely related Globorotalia petaliformis Boltovskoy, 1974 were also included in compilation.

Description: During the MOSAIC expedition, we deployed in-ice light measuring buoys, lightharp, and lightchains into the ice to investigate light partitioning and irradiance at different layers and depths in sea ice. The dataset presented here contains processed data from both instrument systems, containing derived optical properties, PAR data, and auxiliary data for each deployment site. Auxiliary data gives information on the position, snow, and ice thickness statistics, and surface melt that changes the relative vertical position of the measurements. Auxiliary data was retrieved from SIMBA buoys deployed in the vicinity of the optical instruments. All data are provided in NetCDF format. The dataset includes processed data from the lightharp and three light chains (one redeployed on Leg5) from MOSAiC. The instruments were deployed at four different sites during MOSAiC: LM site (SYI dark coring site), L3 site, Pond site on Leg5 and within the Central Observatory (CO). The first part of the filenames reflects the deployment site. The second part gives the buoy name to which the optical sensors were connected and the last part the measurement period in YYMMDD. The NetCDF files were compiled using the profile_trajectory standard from CF conventions. Multiple directly measured and derived data layers are included with data coordinates depth and nominal_date. Nominal_date is the time of the uppermost valid measurement of a profile. Furthermore, files contain a set of already published auxiliary data describing the snow- and ice thickness statistics at the measurement sites (mean, max, min, and std) and a proxy for surface melt, that changes the vertical position of the frozen-in sensors. The lightharp data furthermore contains snow thickness from SIMBA buoy T62 and an individual surface melt approximation derived with temperature measurements at the optical sensors and surface melt rates. Data PIs and further helpful information is included in the attributes.

Description: This dataset contains one snow covered digital elevation model (DEM) and one snow depth product from April 10, 2019 over the Trail Valley Creek research watershed, Northwest Territories, Canada (68°44'25 N, 133°29'36 W). The products are derived from airborne laser scanner data that was collected with a Riegl VQ-580 on board the Alfred Wegener Institute's POLAR-6 science aircraft. The snow covered DEM contains the snow covered landscape elevations, i.e. the terrain and the snow. To obtain snow depth, a snow-free digital terrain model (DTM) needs to be subtracted from the snow covered DEM. We also provide a snow depth product, which we obtained by subtracting snow-free DTMs of Trail Valley Creek and the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH) (both from August 2018) from the DEM including snow cover. Please note that the snow depth product covers only parts of the complete snow covered DEM. The data can be used for analysing spatial snow accumulation patterns.

Description: The concentration of radiocarbon (14C) differs between ocean and atmosphere. Radiocarbon determinations from samples which obtained their 14C in the marine environment therefore need a marine-specific calibration curve and cannot be calibrated directly against the atmospheric-based IntCal20 curve. This paper presents Marine20, an update to the internationally-agreed marine radiocarbon age calibration curve that provides a non-polar global-average marine record of radiocarbon from 0 – 55 cal kBP and serves as a baseline for regional oceanic variation. Marine20 is based upon 500 simulations with an ocean/atmosphere/biosphere box-model of the global carbon cycle that has been forced by posterior realisations of our Northern Hemispheric atmospheric IntCal20 14C curve and reconstructed changes in CO2 obtained from ice core data. These forcings enable us to incorporate carbon cycle dynamics and temporal changes in the atmospheric 14C level. The box-model simulations of the global-average marine radiocarbon reservoir age are similar to those of a more complex three-dimensional ocean general circulation model. However, simplicity and speed of the box model allow us to use a Monte Carlo approach to rigorously propagate the uncertainty in both the historic concentration of atmospheric 14C and other key parameters of the carbon cycle through to our final Marine20 calibration curve. This robust propagation of uncertainty is fundamental to providing reliable precision for the radiocarbon age calibration of marine based samples. We make a first step towards deconvolving the contributions of different processes to the total uncertainty; discuss the main differences of Marine20 from the previous age calibration curve Marine13; and identify the limitations of our approach together with key areas for further work. The updated values for 𝛥𝑅, the regional marine radiocarbon reservoir age corrections required to calibrate against Marine20, can be found at the data base http://calib.org/marine/. This data set includes: - the data plotted in the related manuscript, including Marine20, and IntCal20, the most recent version of the radiocarbon age calibration curves - the 500 northern hemispheric atmospheric Δ14C realisations of IntCal20 used as input for the calculation of Marine20 - a netCDF file from the LSG OCGCM with spatially resolved marine reservoir ages.

Description: Negative excursions in the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ¹³C) at Atlantic intermediate to mid-depths are common features of millennial-scale events named Heinrich Stadials (HS). The mechanisms behind these excursions are not yet fully understood, but most hypotheses agree on the central role played by the weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Marine records registering millennial-scale negative δ¹³C excursions in the Atlantic are mostly restricted to the HS of the last deglacial, while the HS of the last glacial are poorly studied. Here we constrain changes in bottom water ventilation in the western tropical South Atlantic mid-depth during HS of the last glacial and deglacial by investigating marine core M125-95-3. The concurrent decreases in benthic foraminifera δ¹³C and increases in bulk sediment sulfur indicates an increased Northern Component Water (NCW) residence time in the western tropical South Atlantic mid-depth during HS. Furthermore, a coherent meridional pattern emerges from the comparison of our new data to previously published mid-depth records from the western South Atlantic. While our record shows the largest negative δ¹³C excursions during almost all HS, the western equatorial Atlantic showed medium and the subtropical South Atlantic showed the smallest negative excursions. This meridional pattern supports the notion that during HS a reduction in the NCW δ¹³C source signal together with the accumulation of respired carbon at NCW depths drove the negative δ¹³C excursions. We suggest that the negative δ¹³C excursions progressively increase along the NCW southwards pathway until the signal dissipates/dilutes by mixing with Southern Component Water.

For this, we combined satellite altimetry data from CryoSat-2 with satellite gravimetry data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) over the Greenland Ice Sheet including peripheral glaciers and ice caps. The combination improves ice-mass change estimates since the two satellite techniques complement each other. Satellite altimetry is used to resolve mass changes at glacier scale (grid resolution of 1.5×1.5 km²). Satellite gravimetry is directly sensitive to mass redistributions allowing the combined mass balance to be adjusted to the GRACE estimate. However, the mass-balance estimation by satellite gravimetry depends directly on the glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA) correction. To investigate the GIA mass effect, three different GIA models were consistently used in all processing steps. Therefore, three different versions of the mass-change rates are provided depending on the GIA model applied.

Description: Subtropical ocean gyres play a key role in modulating the global climate system redistributing energy between low and high latitudes. A poleward displacement of the subtropical gyres has been observed over the last decades, but the lack of long-term monitoring data hinders an in-depth understanding of their dynamics. Paleoceanographic records offer the opportunity to identify meridional changes in the subtropical gyres and investigate their consequences to the climate system. Here we use the abundance of planktonic foraminiferal species Globorotalia truncatulinodes from a sediment core collected at the northernmost boundary of the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre (SASG) to track changes in its meridional position. Our results show systematic decreases in the percentage of G. truncatulinoides during Heinrich Stadials (HS), indicating southward shifts of the northernmost boundary of the SASG.

Description: In order to assess the response of vegetation from eastern tropical South America to hydroclimate changes during the last ca. 45 kyr, we analyzed marine sediment core M125-95-3 that archived sediments from the São Francisco River drainage basin. We used the stable carbon (δ13C) and hydrogen (δD) isotopes of long-chain n-alkanes (i.e., C29-C31) to reconstruct regional vegetation composition and precipitation dynamics, respectively. The data set contains marine sedimentary records of long-chain n-alkane δ13C and δD, as well as the isotopic difference between homologues (Δδ13C31-29), and locally estimated scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) of indicated data. The δ13Cwax refers to the weighted averages of δ13C29 and δ13C31 values. The δDwax refers to the weighted averages of δD29 and δD31 values.

Description: During the Arctic Land Expedition Perma-X in West Alaska (2022-07-28 -- 2022-08-21), several LiDAR scans were acquired using a backpack laser scanning system (GreenValley LiBackpack DGC50). The surveys were carried out on the Baldwin Peninsula and on the Seward Peninsula. The goal of the campaign was to quantify permafrost landscape change by mapping various permafrost thaw features such as thaw slumps, gullies, and degraded ice wedge polygons. These features are predominantly less than 1 km2 in size. The 3D point cloud data from the LiDAR backpack were used to generate Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the thaw features. The point cloud processing workflow for these DEMs included point cloud georeferencing, filtering, and ground classification. In total, 15 DEMs were derived at different locations during this campaign. In addition to change detection, the accurate field data are suitable for model parameterization and validation from Earth observation data.

Description: The seismic data were collected on the Queensland Plateau during RV SONNE expedition SO292 in spring 2022 (Betzler et al., 2022). The seismic signals were generated by two simultaneously released GI-Gun (true GI-Modus; primary volume of 45 in3) and a Mini-GI source (true GI-Modus; primary volume of 15 in3), towed 41 m behind the ship's stern and in a water depth of ca. 2.5 m. Sources were released by a GPS-controlled PC every 18.75 m at 160 bar. To synchronize seismic sources and trigger the recording system, a SureShot trigger system was used. This system allowed to display and adjust the source signatures measured by hydrophones attached to the seismic sources for each shot and therefore enabled an online quality control during the watchkeeping. The streamer was a Hydroscience Technologies SeaMUX 144-channel system with an active length of 600 m and symmetric group interval. The recording length was set to 4 s, the sample interval was 1 ms. Raw data were stored in SEG-Y format. All seismic profiles were processed on board with the 2021 VISTA® desktop seismic data processing software by Schlumberger. The main processing steps were Bandpass filtering (18/25 – 350/450 Hz), velocity analysis (every 25-500 CMP), spherical divergence correction, NMO-correction and stack, FD migration, topmute, data enhancement (white noise removal, fx deco), scaling. Processed data contained in this dataset are stored as SEG-Y. UTM coordinates (UTM zone 55) are stored at trace header position 181 (4-byte) and 185 (4-byte).

Description: Solar radiation over and under sea ice was measured by radiation station 2020R10, an autonomous platform, installed on drifting First-Year-Ice (FYI) in the Arctic Ocean during MOSAiC (Leg 2) 2019/20. The resulting time series describes radiation measurements as a function of place and time between 08 March 2020 and 21 July 2020 in sample intervals of 1 hour.
