Description: Data of the broadband albedo averaged at the MODIS pixel, which was derived from the measurements by either pyrometer (shortwave, in the range of 200-3600 nm) or albedometer (visible in 400-700nm, near infrared in 700-2100, and shortwave in 400-2100) during the ACLOUD and AFLUX campaigns. This data is intended to validate the RTM-SciML (short for radiative transfer model - scientific machine learning model) algorithm, which uses top-of-atmosphere radiance data from MODIS as input to perform albedo retrieval for sea-ice surface. In addition to the satellite and measured data, the pixel type and surface classification retrieved using scientific machine learning models (https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2021-397/) are also included.

Description: In the aftermath of the twentieth century’s raging warfare, attempts were made to create an environment in which new relationships between European nations could be built around a common identity. Yet, in the twenty-first century, identity conflicts are gaining a new intensity in parts of the continent. In the analysis of some sub-state nationalist parties, the prospect of European Union membership reduces the economic and political risks of secession. Meanwhile, to the east, any moves towards expansion of EU membership are viewed by Russia not as a peace project but as acts of aggression. This volume assembles a series of comparative and single-area case studies drawn from different academic disciplines.

Description: Through a skillful combination of economic and cultural history, this book describes the impact on Moldavia and Wallachia of steam navigation on the Danube. The Danube route integrated the two principalities into a dense network of European roads and waterways. From the 1830s to the 1860s, steamboat transport transformed time and space for the areas that benefited from regular services. River traffic accelerated urban development along the Lower Danube and contributed directly to institutional modernization in one of Europe’s peripheries. Beyond technological advances and the transportation of goods on a trans-imperial waterway, steamboat travel revolutionized human interactions, too. The book offers a fascinating insight into the social and cultural milieu of the nineteenth century, drawing on first-hand accounts of Danube cruising. Describing the story of travelers who interacted, met, and visited the places they stopped, Constantin Ardeleanu creates a transnational history of travel up and down the Danube from Vienna to Constantinople. The pleasures and sometimes the travails of the travelers unfold against a backdrop of technical and economic transformation in the crucial period of modernization.

Description: This open access book explores the role of continuity in political processes and practices during the Age of Revolutions. It argues that the changes that took place in the years around 1800 were enabled by different types of continuities across Europe and in the Americas. With historians of modernity tending to emphasise the rise of the new, scholarship has leaned towards an assumption that existing modes of action, thought and practice simply became extinct, irrelevant or at least subordinate to new modes. In contrast, this collection examines continuities between early modern and modern political cultures and organization in Europe and the Americas. Shifting the focus from political modernization, the authors examine the continued relevance of older, often local, practices in (post)revolutionary politics. By doing so, they aim to highlight the role of local political traditions and practices in forging and enabling political change. The book argues that while political change was in fact at the centre of both the old and new polities that emerged in the Age of Revolutions, it coexisted with, and was indeed enabled by, continuities at other levels.

Description: Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra constitutes an important turning point in the transition from early lyric to theatre. Inspired by Sophocles' drama, but with elements more similar to Euripides', it proposes a linguistic connotation, characterisation of the characters and a completely innovative and unconventional staging. Blood, a concrete representation of the unprecedented violence that characterises the entire drama, is the red thread that links the succession of events. Words turn into weapons and the protagonist's thirst for vengeance drives the action. The finale culminates in a supreme act of violence that sees the roles reversed: the executioners become victims and the victims executioners. This is the only solution to end the circle of brutal suffering.

Description: This open access book is a novel contribution in two ways: It is a multi-disciplinary examination of the indigenous South Saami people in Fennoscandia, a social and cultural group that often is overlooked as it is a minority within the Saami minority. Based on both historical material such as archaeological evidence, 20th century newspapers, and postcard motives as well as current sources such as ongoing land-right trials and recent works of historiography, the articles highlight the culture and living conditions of this indigenous group, mapping the negotiations of different identities through the interaction of Saami and non-Saami people through the ages. By illuminating this under-researched field, the volume also enriches the more general debate on global indigenous history, and sheds light on the construction of a Scandinavian identity and the limits of the welfare state and the myth of heterogeneity and equality.
