    Notes: Copolymers of styrene-methyl methacrylate were irradiated in vacuo with γ-rays; viscosity changes and gas yields (moles gas per mole methyl methacrylate in copolymer) for H2, CO, CO2, CH4, HCOOCH3, and CH3OH were examined at doses of 1.0 Mrep to 10.0 Mrep. It was found that styrene molecules protect the copolymer from degrading while decreasing the gas yields up to a styrene concentration of about 0.5 mole fraction; above this concentration, these radiation effects are independent of composition. When styrene-methyl acrylate copolymers were irradiated, styrene offered protection aganist gelation but simultaneously increased the gas yields (gases liberated were identical with those from the first system).

    Notes: Styrene, styrene mixed with rubber, and rubber alone have been exposed to γ-radiation from Co-60. The G value for polymerization-initiating radicals formed from rubber in the mixture, G(i.r) = 0.26, has been calculated from corresponding values obtained by estimation of the number of polystyrene molecules formed in styrene and in the mixture. A G (radical) value for rubber when irradiated alone, G(r), has been assessed from a G (crosslinking) value, G(X), which was determined under closely similar experimental conditions, as G(r) = 2G(X) ∼ 6. The large discrepancy between G(r) and G(i.r.) cannot be explained satisfactorily on the supposition that radicals formed from rubber have a low efficiency in initiating the polymerization of styrene. Therefore, it is argued that the G(r) value itself is lower in the mixture. Evidence for this argument is provided by the lower rate of gelling in the mixture. this protection of rubber by energy transfer to styrene is an important example since in only one previous case has experimental evidence been provided to exclude an alternative radical mechanism. By polymerization in the presence of crosslinked rubber, uncombined polystyrene could be readily partioned into the sol fraction by equilibration of the gross polymer in benzene. About 15% of the polystyrene was free. Hexachloroethane was chosen as an example of an additive with a high G (radical) value. As would be expected, it increases the rate of polymerization but does not lead to a correspondingly large amount of free polystyrene (about 23%). Graft polymer formation from styrene and methyl methacrylate is compared and attention is drawn to the importance of the formation and subsequent reactions of initially nonpolymeric radicals in determining the proportion of free plastomer.

    Notes: 3-Methyl-Δ3-butenyl-1-pyrophosphat (Isopentenyl-pyrophosphat) spielt im Stoffwechsel die Rolle eines „aktiven Isoprens“, d. h. es ist der gemeinsame Baustein aller unter die „Isoprenregel“ fallenden Naturstoffe. Es wird über die 6-fache Anreicherung einer Isopentenyl-pyrophosphat-Isomerase aus Hefe berichtet, die Isopentenyl-pyrophosphat in Dimethyl-allyl-pyrophosphat umwandelt, das dann als Starter für den Aufbau von Terpen-Kohlenstoffketten aus C5-Einheiten dient. Die Verknüpfung der C5-Einheiten besorgt das Enzym Farnesyl-pyrophosphat-Synthetase, das aus Hefe 20-fach angereichert werden konnte. Setzt man in die Synthetase-Reaktion Isopentenyl-pyrophosphat neben einem großen Überschuß von Dimethyl-allyl-pyrophosphat ein, so läßt sich als erstes Kondensationsprodukt Geranyl-pyrophosphat nachweisen, das durch Anfügen einer weiteren C5-Einheit in Farnesylpyrophosphat übergeht. Damit sind jetzt alle Syntheseschritte geklärt, die auf dem Wege vom Acetyl-CoA zum Squalen liegen, das seinerseits wieder Vorstufe der cyclischen Triterpene und Sterine ist.
