Description: A NASA propulsive-lift technology program for short takeoff aircraft is discussed. In the propulsive-lift program, turbofan engine power is used to augment the lift of essentially conventional wings. Potentially important applications of the propulsive lift developments for various aircraft operating conditions are reported. It is stated that the objective of the program is to provide technical information on the design, development, operation, and regulation of propulsive-lift aircraft.

Description: A comprehensive review of NASA research results documented since the mid-1960's and some recently completed programs on aircraft handling qualities are presented. In addition to handling qualities research pertaining to vehicle stability and control characteristics, investigations related to specialized piloting tasks, cockpit displays, and environmental factors are summarized. The background leading to NASA's handling qualities research activities is discussed, and programs that have received major emphasis are indicated. For general aviation aircraft, the survey includes investigations aimed at improving handling qualities by incorporating increasingly sophisticated stability augmentation and display systems, simplifying the approach and landing task for relatively inexperienced pilots, and establishing the basic effects of turbulence. Research on the specialized piloting problem of steeper instrument approaches for noise abatement and investigations with a representative first generation aircraft are reviewed in the section on subsonic jet transports. Supersonic cruise aircraft programs include a variety of simulation studies related to supersonic transport designs and flight tests with the XB-70 aircraft. Investigations of high angle of attack loss of control problems and a flight study of direct lift control utilization for formation flying and aerial refueling are discussed in the review of tactical military aircraft research.

Description: Analytical studies and flight tests are used to describe the formation and severity of trailing vortices and the spatial extent of their influence. This information is then used to outline procedures for ready application by pilots, tower operators, and others concerned with the flow of traffic. The procedures provide the necessary appreciation of the physical attributes of trailing vortices, the potential hazards involved when encountering them, and how best to avoid the dangerous portions of the wake during flight operations.

Description: A computer program to predict, by reference to structural drawings, the dynamic response of a high lift STOL wing with externally blown flaps was developed. Structural data for the computer program are presented in the form of sketches, weight and dynamic loads information graphs, and tables for an external blown, triple-slotted flap, high lift STOL transport wing. Weight, mass distribution, and moment of inertia data are summarized in table form and presented pictorially by drawing layout. The methods used for obtaining weight data were: (1) actual know, weight of components, (2) preliminary stress sizing, and (3) statistical weight estimating methods.

Description: High speed wind tunnel test results are presented showing the cruise drag effect of installing JT8D-109 Refan engines on a Boeing 727-200. Incremental drags of a refan center inlet and side nacelles are presented for several configuration variations. Static pressure distributions were obtained on the side nacelle strut and on the fuselage (above and below the strut). Oil flow photographs of selected configurations are also presented. In general the drag level of the refan installation is slightly better than predicted prior to the test and the drag rise is favorable.

Description: To increase aircrewmen's chances for safe rescue in combat zones, the armed forces are investigating advanced escape and rescue concepts that will provide independent flight after ejection and thus reduce the risk of capture. One of the candidate concepts is discussed; namely, a stowable autogyro that serves as the crewman's seat during normal operations and automatically converts to a flight vehicle after ejection. Discussed are (1) the mechanism subsystems that the concept embodies to meet the weight and cockpit-packaging constraints and (2) tests that demonstrated the technical feasibility of the stowage, deployment, and flight operation of the rotor lift system.

Description: An exploratory study has been conducted to assess the performance potential of buoyant airships and parawings in short-haul passenger transportation. Results show that such systems can be used effectively, from a performance standpoint, in a VTOL or STOL mode of operation. A supplementary assessment of potential applications of such vehicles is examined, with a brief look at economic factors and an examination of missions for which they might be effectively used.

Description: The results of the study lead to a number of conclusions regarding priority areas for R and D. It was found that aircraft noise abatement deserves highest priority because of widespread concern for the environment and because the success of the noise-abatement program will affect the solutions to other problems. Congestion is next on the list of priority problems. Its solution will involve an organized effort directed at the combination of air traffic control, runway capacity, ground control of aircraft, terminal processing, access and egress, parking, and airport location, acquisition, and development. A new short-haul system could help relieve congestion at existing airports. Constant improvements in technology for long-haul vehicles and their propulsion systems are essential to continued U.S. leadership.

Description: Prospects for a revival of large airships are based on a number of unique services which can be provided by the dirigibles. It is shown that airships are not unduly weather-sensitive. Modern technological advances will give the airship of the future operational features which will be greatly superior to those of the Zeppelins of the past. Projections set the payload of a 22-million-cu ft conventionally propelled airship of conservative design at 615,000 lb for a range of 2950 mi. The corresponding figure for the C-5A aircraft is only 265,000 lb. Dirigibles could, therefore, become merchant ships of the air, carrying low-density and large-dimension cargoes that jet freighters find economically unattractive or practically impossible to handle. The absence of landing-facility requirements would make the airship a logical candidate for introducing trade into otherwise inaccessible regions of the world.

Description: Present drawbacks to short-haul air transportation are partly related to passenger and baggage processing at air terminals and ground access difficulties. It is pointed out that the widely used automobile is the most inefficient mode of transportation. Various new developments in the field of ground transportation are considered. It is suggested to develop an integrated transportation system which would replace the various competing modes of automobile, bus, rail, and air with a single system for moving people and goods from their origins to their destinations. The Intermodal Automated Transfer system discussed would treat the passenger, his baggage, and the seat in which he travels as a unit which would stay together throughout a trip, regardless of the carrier used.

Description: The objective of the F-8 digital fly-by-wire program is to establish a technology base for the implementation of advanced flight control systems. The central element is the Apollo Lunar Guidance Computer (LGC). This versatile computer ran over 2000 hours in support of fly-by-wire without a failure. Difficulties encountered in the first flights were corrected rapidly and simply by changes in the erasable software memory. Control-configured vehicles offer significant weight-saving possibilities.

Description: An aircraft control system is described which is particularly suited to rotary wing aircraft. Longitudinal acceleration and course rate commands are derived from a manual control stick to control translational velocity of the aircraft along a flight path. In the collective channel the manual controls provide vertical velocity commands. In the yaw channel the manual controls provide sideslip or heading rate commands at high or low airspeeds, respectively. The control system permits pilots to fly along prescribed flight paths in a precise manner with relatively low work load.

Description: Approaches making use of aerodynamic surfaces in combination with advanced flight computers, and electrohydraulic systems could be used to improve economics of commercial aircraft operation, smooth the passenger's ride, reduce terminal-area noise, and ease terminal-area congestion. This emerging technology is becoming known as active controls technology. Maximum benefits from active controls can come only by considering controls early in the design cycle. Active controls can save weight by reducing the structural strength necessary. Some of the technical benefits of active controls would increase return on investment and raise profits. Details of a proposed active controls research program are discussed.

Description: NASA has undertaken an Advanced Transport Technology Program directed toward defining technology advances that would contribute to a superior subsonic long-haul transport aircraft for conventional takeoff and landing. The aircraft, engine industries, and airlines play substantial parts in the program. Major objectives of the studies include the making of conceptual layouts of new subsonic transport aircraft incorporating projected advances and the identification of the potential benefits and costs of the technology advances. Another goal is the definition of the ground and flight research activities required to bring the advanced technologies to a state of readiness for industry use by the late 1970s.
