Description: Ten-micrometer band communication systems using CO2 lasers for space to space links are discussed. Particular emphasis is on low earth orbiting earth observation satellites to geosynchronous satellites at high data rate. Four key technology areas are discussed: wideband mixers for Doppler tracking; tunable laser local oscillators; high data rate modulators; and laser transmitters.

Description: Extraneous interfering signals are discussed which limit the basic accuracy of the 136 MHz Minitrack radio-interferometer system providing electrical phase data from which direction cosines for determining spacecraft orbits are generated. In particular, the fundamental error due to interference caused by the passage of the galactic nucleus is investigated. An expression is developed for the lower bound of the phase error when the noise source is not uniformly distributed across the Minitrack's zenith-pointed fan beam. In addition, the threshold of the Minitrack input power levels is determined below which the electrical phase is no longer determined unambiguously. The effect of the passage of the galactic nucleus coincident with the presence of a spacecraft is analyzed, and the corresponding phase error established.

Description: A radio-sky map, covering the whole celestial sphere, is helpful for determining the system noise temperature of an earth-based satellite receiving system. Detailed sky maps for the 136- and 400-MHz space research (space-to-earth) satellite frequency bands have been generated, using a computer, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Description: During 1970 and 1971 the characteristics of a diversity satellite-to-ground communication link were measured using the ATS-5 15.3 GHz downlink. These data were gathered at two ground receiving terminals spaced 4 km apart during 1970 and 8 km apart during 1971 in the vicinity of Columbus, Ohio. These data have been subsequently analyzed to determine the improvement in link performance resulting from the use of space diversity. The results of this analysis have shown that substantial improvements in link performance may be gained through the use of space diversity on satellite-to-ground paths. For example, the durations of fades having depths exceeding 10 dB were reduced by more than two orders of magnitude for both the 4 and 8 km site separation distances.

Description: The performance of a path diversity satellite-to-ground millimeter wave link with two ground terminals separated by 4 km is discussed. At this separation distance the duration of fades below 6 dB was decreased by at least a factor of 10 when using path diversity and the cumulative crosscorrelation between the attenuations observed at the two terminals during rain events was approximately 0.45. Narrow beam radiometers directed along the propagation paths were also utilized to relate the path radiometric temperature to the path attenuation. An analysis of downlink propagation data for generating diversity link performance statistics is included.

Description: An upper bound on the rate-distortion function for discrete ergodic sources with memory is developed by partitioning the source sample space into a finite number of disjoint subsets and bounding the rates for each subset. The bound depends only on the mean vectors and covariance matrices for the subsets and is easy to compute. It is tighter than the Gaussian bound for sources that exhibit clustering of either the values or covariances of successive source outputs. The bound is evaluated for a certain class of pictorial data using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional blocks of picture elements. Two-dimensional blocks yield a tighter bound than one-dimensional blocks; both result in a significantly tighter bound than the Gaussian bound.
