Description: A storage gas-turbine power plant using a two-cylinder compressor with intermediate cooling is studied. On the basis of measured characteristics of a .25 Mw compressor computer calculations of the parameters of the loading process of a constant capacity storage unit (05.3 million cu m) were carried out. The required compressor power as a function of time with and without final cooling was computed. Parameters of maximum loading and discharging of the storage unit were calculated, and it was found that for the complete loading of a fully unloaded storage unit, a capacity of 1 to 1.5 million cubic meters is required, depending on the final cooling.

Description: The performance of heavy-duty planetary gear drives for ball mills used in the cement industry since 1967 is described. These gear drives transmit up to 8500 HP per installation. A reliable method for establishing gear drive efficiency is described and possible savings due to higher efficiency are indicated.

Description: Self-excited rotor whirl represents a serious hazard in the operation of turbomachines. The reported investigation has, therefore, the objective to measure the lateral forces acting on the rotor and to determine the characteristic pressure distribution in the rotor clearance area. A description is presented of an approach for calculating the leakage flow in the case of an eccentric rotor position on the basis of empirical loss coefficients. The results are reported of an experimental investigation with a turbine stage, taking into account a variation of the clearance characteristics. The pressure data measured are consistent with the theoretical considerations.

Description: An attempt is made to analytically model the physicochemical properties of lubricants and their capacity to reduce friction. A technique of frozen fracturing of the lubricants was employed to study the dispersion of additives throughout a lubricant. Adsorption was observed at the liquid-solid interface, which was the region where the solid and lubricant met, and the molecular dispersion of the additive enhanced the effectiveness of the lubricant. The electrically conductive characteristics of the lubricant at the friction interface indicated the presence of tunneling effects. The Bethe model was used to examine the relationship between the coefficient of friction and the variation of interface thickness. The electron transport permitted an inelastic tunnel electron spectroscopic investigation of the molecular transformations undergone by the additive during friction episodes.

Description: The internal rotation torque generated during operation of a 4-wheel drive vehicle is reduced using a control device whose clutch is attached to one part of the rear-wheel drive shaft. One torque sensor senses the drive torque associated with the rear wheel drive shaft. A second sensor senses the drive torque associated with the front wheel drive shaft. Revolution count sensors sense the revolutions of each drive shaft. By means of a microcomputer, the engagement of the clutch is changed to insure that the ratio of the torque sensors remains constant.

Description: The use of compressed air was suggested to increase the reliability and motor lifetime of a gas turbine engine. Experiments were carried out and the results are shown in the form of the variation in circumferential force as a function of the entry angle of the working jet onto the turbine blade. The described start-up method is recommended for use with massive rotors.

Description: A generalization of the hydrodynamic expression for Hertzian contacts is described and various methods for calculating the thickness of the oil film winter steady-state, isothermal conditions are given. This is important for engineering applications such as gears and bearings because these results are closer to real operating conditions. Theories of lubrication are discussed, and the mathematics involved are presented using approximately 30 equations and 13 figures. For lubricated, linear, elliptical or point Hertzian contacts it is demonstrated how to calculate the thickness of the oil film at the center of the contact for steady-state isothermal conditions.
