    Notes: A finite element technique, for efficient solution of a class of 3-D elasticity problems, is presented. In this method, standard 2-D finite elements are used along with a ‘connector’ element. An element, previously used to model material interfaces, is shown to provide the properties for use as a ‘connector’ element, if input variables are redefined. The accuracy of the technique is illustrated with a sample solution.

    Notes: An equation solver for the large unsymmetric systems of linear equations arising in the application of the boundary integral equation method to problems of linear elasticity in homogeneous or piecewise homogeneous solids is presented. The solver uses Gaussian elimination. The advantages of the solver over many existing eliminational or iterational methods are that it ignores many of the large groups of zeros that occur in piecewise homogeneous work, and also restrains growth of the number of non-zero matrix entries. Memory requirements and computation times therefore are reduced for many piecewise homogeneous problems.

    Notes: A boundary element method for the solution of problems of elastic and elasto-plastic torsion of solids of revolution is proposed. The displacement and stress field produced by a circumferential ring load in an infinite elastic body are derived and used as the fundamental solution to establish the governing integral equations. For the elasto-plastic case, linear boundary elements and bilinear quadrilateral internal cells are used for discretization of these equations. In order to carry out Gaussian integrations along boundary elements and over internal cells, a method ensuring sufficient accuracy for the calculation of singular integrals is proposed. Numerical results for several problems are given.

    Notes: A method for solving boundary value problems for thin plate flexure as described by Kirchhoff's theory is proposed. An integral formulation leads to a system of boundary integral equations involving values of deflection, slope, bending moment and transverse shear force along the edge. A discretization leading to a matrix formulation is proposed. To solve problems with inner conditions in the plate domain, an elimination of boundary unknowns proves successful. The degenerate case where the boundary is free (which leads to a non-invertible matrix) is investigated. Three examples illustrate the efficiency of the method.

    Notes: Upwind collocation on Hermite cubics is compared to orthogonal collocation with respect to effective diffusion. The one-dimensional constant coefficient advection-diffusion equation is employed to this end. The effective diffusion coefficient is determined exactly and is found to be dependent on the nodal solution values. The effective diffusion coefficients of three other upwinding schemes are also presented. Upwind collocation is found to have an effective diffusion coefficient like other upwinding schemes plus an extra term which may enhance or reduce the non-advective flux, depending on the problem solution and point location within the domain.

    Notes: A triangular plate element of the Mindlin type, which uses linear fields for rotations and transverse deflections, is developed. Success is achieved, in contrast to previous failures with this element, by decomposing the displacements into well-defined bending and shear modes which are associated with bending and shear energies, respectively. The element only requires a single quadrature point, which is very attractive for nonlinear analysis. Results are presented for a variety of plate problems; the accuracy is similar to the 4-node bilinear Mindlin plate and its rate of convergence is approximately of order h2.

    Notes: A collocation method based on multiple regions with moving boundaries placed in a flow field in which convection effects dominate, is proposed. By making the moving boundaries of the regions coincide with moving sharp fronts present in the solution of convection dominated problems, and thereby allowing higher concentration of meshes to be placed about the fronts, the proposed method is able to achieve very high accuracy. By having a moving mesh, the Peclet number characterizing the flow field depends upon velocity relative to a moving mesh in a region. Consequently by choosing proper velocities of the moving boundaries, the value of this Peclet number can be made as small as desired. The traditional collocation method based on centred discretization, when applied to each region in the field, produces oscillation free solutions even when the values of Peclet number based on absolute velocity are extremely large. In view of these characteristics the method appears to be an excellent candidate for the solution of any two-phase flow problem containing sharp fronts.

    Notes: A method which combines the finite element technique and the singular-integral equation method is presented. The association of the two methods is obtained with the help of Schwarz's alternating method (SAM). The method was applied with satisfactory results to the solution of a series of problems of a circular arc crack lying inside a finite thin plate for various lengths of the circular arc and for various dimensions of the rectangular cracked sheet.
