Notes: Abstract Pipeline techniques have been successfully applied to speeding up processing in both general- and special-purpose digital computers. Application of these techniques to nonrecursive (FIR) filters has been suggested and is quite straightforward. Application to recursive (IIR) filters has not previously been shown. In this paper, the technique for applying pipeline techniques to recursive filters is shown and the advantages and disadvantages of the technique are discussed. Using these techniques, recursive digital filters operating at hitherto impossibly high rates can be designed.

Notes: Abstract The long-standing problem of reconstructing a function from its samples is considered again. Assuming a sequence of oversampled values, a set of appropriate idealized reconstruction filters can be defined, which do not suffer from instability or slow convergence. The realization — a cascade of a nonrecursive digital filter, D/A-converter, and a fixed/analog smoothing filter — demands the design of the digital filter for the increase of the sampling rate. The design of this nonrecursive filter is the purpose of this paper. Approximations in the frequency as well as in the time domain are presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we formulate power systems as nonlinear nearly Hamiltonian systems. Using the invariance principle for ordinary differential equations, necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are established and a new method of estimating the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium point is developed. The present results constitute a novel approach to stability analysis and involve the following three steps: a. Given a system with dissipation, the stability of its equilibrium is ascertained by determining the stability of the associated conservative system. b. Attractivity of the stable equilibrium of the entire system (with dissipation) is determined from the system topology. c. An estimate of the domain of attraction of the asymptotically stable equilibrium is obtained by making use of results obtained in (a) and (b). The stability criterion developed in this paper sheds new light on the mechanism of instability in power systems and it provides analytical verification to the concept of the potential-energy boundary surface (PEBS). The PEBS is a hypersurface which makes up a part of the boundary of the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium in a power system. The existence and properties of the PEBS have thus far been deduced primarily via simulations and heuristic methods.

Notes: Abstract In conventional television systems, picture scanning in vertical and temporal directions is usually very defective with regard to the sampling theorem. In this paper some deficiencies such as aliasing, line-structure distortion, line flickering, and large-area flickering are investigated with regard to their dependence on the inter-lacedpicture-scanning process. The three-dimensional reconstruction filtering of the sampled picture is especially analyzed with respect of the viewer's perception. Furthermore, it will be shown that in connection with a new concept of picture scanning published earlier [1], [2], a flat-field reproduction without any 25/30-Hz flicker can be achieved by vertical filtering only. This is true even though the final reproduction by the monitor is performed with interlace. The vertical filtering can then be optimized in the sense of maximum picture sharpness and resolution with negligible ringing as well. Practical results are given in this paper.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a new type of “velocity-selecting/rejecting filter” which passes or stops a particular event in a seismic signal is proposed. The velocity-selecting filter is based on a time-space band-pass filter with sharp passband for a particular direction, and similarly, the velocity-rejecting filter is based on a time-space band-stop filter. A technique for designing such filters, in terms of an infinite-impulse-response (IIR) filter, is presented, in which a rotated version of separable filter is used. Finally, numerical examples are included to illustrate the design theory.

Notes: Abstract In a recent paper on nonlocal expansions necessary and sufficient conditions are given under whichf −1 has a generalized power series expansion, whenf is an invertible locally Lipschitz map between certain general subsets of a complex Banach space. Here we establish the validity of a conceptually interesting algorithm for obtaining the expansion. Basically, we show that a certain contraction mapping iteration generates iteratesℐ 1,ℐ 2,... such that eachℐ k yields all of the terms of the generalized power series expansion off −1 up to order (k + 1), assuming merely that the expansion off −1 exists. An earlier different result along related lines is mentioned.

Notes: Abstract The representation of functions in a basis function expansionz(t)= ∑k=1/∞=,a k〉 x k (t) is straightforward when the basis functionsx k (t) are orthogonal. There has been very little work up to this time in determining how to use nonorthogonal bases in signal representation. On the other hand, applications in data compression and signal synthesis often require using specific tailor-made bases. Presented here is a method for constructing very general nonorthogonal bases. Orthogonality has often been used to show that a basis spans the set of functions of interest and to calculate the coefficients of the representation. In this paper, both of these fundamental aspects are addressed for nonorthogonal bases. A new basis {y k (t)} is obtained by performing a linear transformation on a known existing basis {x k (t)}. This transformation is constructed such that the coefficients of signal representation on the new basis are readily found. Then, a useful and sufficient condition is placed upon the new basis such that representations converge. The fundamental methods are applied to the standard examples of signal representation. The complex sinusoids, the Rademacher functions, the orthogonal polynomials, and the decaying exponentials are used as the original basis {x k (t)} from which a new basis {y k (t)} is generated. Two examples are given to illustrate general applications: one in signal synthesis and one in signal analysis.

Notes: Abstract The definitions and properties of various ideals of a nest algebra are reviewed. These correspond to strengthenings of the concept of causality. The interrelationships between these concepts are examined. An open question concerning these ideals is settled, namely that the strongly strictly causal operators form the largest of the classes commonly considered.

Notes: Abstract A class of efficient filter structures is proposed which uses a recursive realization of an FIR filter. The structures are in some sense a generalization of the frequency sampling structure, but they are more versatile and arise from a time-domain rather than frequency-domain argument. The new structure has a tap out of every block delay, and the length of the block delay is the length of each piecewise section of the time-domain approximation. The number of taps, filter coefficients, and the amount of arithmetic are proportional to the number of piecewise sections, not to the actual filter length or order. This filter is particularly efficient when a long-length filter can be approximated by a few piecewise sections, which is the case for many practical filters.

Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a new iterative image restoration method which is capable of restoring noisy blurred images by incorporatinga priori knowledge about the image and noise statistics into the iterative procedure. The iteration equation consists of a prediction part which is based on a noncausal image model description and an innovation part which is weighted by a gain factor. The gain is computed using a linear MSE optimization procedure and is updated at each step of the iteration. The convergence of the algorithm, the resolution of some convergence difficulties by using “reblurring,” and methods for the introduction of physical constraints will be discussed. This image restoration scheme can be interpreted as an iterative procedure with a statistical constraint on the image data. Results of several experiments with noisy blurred data are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

Notes: Abstract Fast decimation-in-time (DIT) algorithms for the various discrete cosine transforms (DCT) and discrete sine transforms (DST) are systematically developed, based on a radix-2 factorization of the transformation matrix. The results indicate these to be attractive alternatives to existing algorithms in terms of computational complexity and structural simplicity.

Notes: Abstract The circuit-simulator program SPICE has been used worldwide by industry and academia to simulate wide varieties of IC designs. With the advance of technology have come many new devices that cannot be simulated by SPICE in its current form. We present methods for implementing classes of new DC device models directly into the source code of SPICE. The techniques described are illustrated for the case of the El-Mansy MOSFET model.

Notes: Abstract We consider the discrete-time detection of a known time-varying deterministic signal in white noise, where the univariate noise density is known perfectly only on an interval about the origin. We present a method to enhance the asymptotic performance of the detector by exploiting this knowledge, and at the same time preserve robustness properties of the detector to the remaining inexact knowledge of the univariate noise density. We then provide examples to show that improved performance is indeed obtained.

Notes: Abstract Recursive filter structures have been found for FIR filters with piecewisepolynomial or piecewise-(polynomial · sinusoid) impulse responses. The amount of arithmetic required for these filters is proportional to the number of piecewise sections in their impulse responses rather than the actual filter lengths. In this paper, it is shown that these impulse response expressions are quite good approximations to many practical filters. Low-pass filters, high-pass filters, narrowband, band-pass, and band-stop filters, Hilbert transformers, and differentiators all have impulse responses which can be approximated by these forms, and a long filter impulse response consists of only a few piecewise sections with greatly reduced arithmetic requirements. Though this technique is based on time-domain approximation, a frequency-domain optimization to select filter parameters is presented with excellent results.

Notes: Abstract The factorization of two-dimensional spectral functions is a problem of interest in the digital processing of signals because of the nonexistence of a fundamental theorem of algebra for bivariate polynomials. In this paper we consider the special case of rational spectral functions, which are quotients of polynomials or pseudo-polynomials of finite order. We first characterize the general use of asymmetric halfplane factors, and then propose recursive procedures to obtain the factors. In the case of strictly positive spectral functions, we use the homomorphic transform to characterize the causal factor by its first-order data and then apply the modified leastsquares approximation to obtain the rational factors. For those cases of partially characterized spectral functions, we propose extensions of one-dimensional procedures. These alternative procedures are based on the modified least-squares approximation as well as on the two-dimensional Levinson algorithm. All the procedures presented are recursive, thus computationally efficient, and guarantee the stability of the factors in most cases.

Notes: Abstract Tests for the discrete scattering Hurwitz property of two-dimensional (2-D) polynomials are suggested. Results belonging to two different categories are presented. The first procedure uses a finite number of rational operations and relies on the so-called polynomial resultant algebra. Alternative methods of testing, which are computationally less complex to implement are also developed.

Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the properties of the two-variable polynomialu (λ, z) built on the first column of the adjoint matrix ofλI -C, whereC is a given Hermitian Toeplitz matrix. In particular, the stability properties ofu (λ,z) are discussed and are shown to depend essentially on the location of X with respect to the eigenvalues ofC. The eigenvectors ofC, which have recently found some applications in signal processing and estimation theory, are obtained from the polynomialu(λ,z) whenλ tends to the eigenvalues ofC. This allows one to derive several results concerning the eigenpolynomials, including those for the case of multiple eigenvalues.

Notes: Abstract A general-purpose interactive computer program for the design of linear causal shift-invariant two-dimensional recursive filters is presented in terms of its organization and operation. Narrow-band fan filters and circularly symmetric low-pass and high-pass filters for many useful image-processing applications can be designed using this program. The design is by numerical optimization of a guaranteedstable analog transfer function which is derived from a general two-dimensional passive prototype network. Corresponding discrete transfer functions are obtained by the double bilinear transformation. In using the program, selection of one code from a menu of predefined design codes provides the designer with various design features; these include the use of a doubly-terminated network to eliminate erroneous gain spikes, the use of a network particularly suited to circularly symmetric functions, and a facility for designing filters potentially useful for high-speed parallel processing. Design examples of a low-order highly selective fan filter and a circularly symmetric low-pass filter are included.

Notes: Abstract The implementation of the Lin model for the non pinchoff depletion mode MOSFETs directly into the source code of the SPICE 2G.5 circuit simulation program is described. The computational advantages of our implementation over Lin's subcircuit approach are pointed out, and, more significantly, certain previously undiscovered limitations of both methods are discussed. The encoding of the model into SPICE is described in sufficient detail so as to be duplicable by other interested researchers. Our results compare favorably to experiment and to the more comprehensive El-Mansy model. Finally, a new method of parameter extraction is described for the El-Mansy model, which makes it possible to derive the parameters of the Lin and El-Mansy models simultaneously.

Notes: Abstract The roundoff noise problem for multirate digital filters is difficult because rate changing inside the filter makes both scaling and roundoff noise calculation complicated. With a new multirate filter analysis technique, the transfer function between any two points inside a multirate filter can be easily found, thus, simplifies the scaling and noise calculation. This paper finds theL P scaling and derives the roundoff noise expressions for fixed point implementations of the multistage decimator, interpolator, and multirate narrow-band low-pass filter. It is shown that the noise source at a low sampling rate stage is more important than that at a higher sampling rate stage. Methods to reduce output roundoff noise are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A relation between the types of symmetries that exist in signal and Fourier transform domain representations is derived for continuous as well as discrete domain signals. The symmetry is expressed by a set of parameters, and the relations derived in this paper will help to find the parameters of a symmetry in the signal or transform domain resulting from a given symmetry in the transform or signal domain respectively. A duality among the relations governing the conversion of the parameters of symmetry in the two domains is also brought to light. The application of the relations is illustrated by a number of two-dimensional examples.

Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional recursive digital filters have the advantages of flexibility and accuracy, typical of digital processing systems, and the ability to perform the desired filtering with significantly fewer operations than nonrecursive filters. In this paper some useful symmetries are exploited in the design of filters with circularly symmetric magnitude responses. With the imposition of quadrantal symmetry, followed by further symmetry about the 45° line, a particular filter structure is derived using a cascade of causal second-order sections. Each section uses only four independent coefficients and possesses a separable denominator, with resulting simplification of stability testing and stabilization, which can now be done by using one-dimensional techniques. The Fletcher-Powell nonlinear optimization routine is used with a mean-squared error criterion, which enables the optimum value of the gain to be incorporated into the objective function to be minimized. Linear phase is approximated by designing all-pass equalizers which can be cascaded with the filters designed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the application of the near-field technique to the measurement of local radiance in small area semi-conductor sources. It is devoted to a description of the causes of broadening, and of the conditions needed to obtain the best near-field distribution. We examine the influence of the radius of the detector diaphragm, of the magnification used and of the modulation transfer function of the system.

Notes: Abstract This paper analyses and compares the performances of direct-detection Optical Time Domain Reflectometry systems using (a) photon counting and (b) analogue front-ends. Simple system models and a range equation have been developed to aid comparison. It is shown that the relative performances depend upon the number of signal averages. But, in the limit of the maximum range there is little to choose between the two for the state of the art systems.

Notes: Abstract We demonstrate that backscatter data processed by the two-point method can provide spatial loss results in a form that allows the immediate interpretation of joint loss. Furthermore, all the joints in a typical repeater span can be compared from the same base line and a threshold level introduced for the rejection or acceptance of joints, a feature which facilitates field measurement.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of the diffraction efficiency of holographic gratings is discussed on the basis of the multiwave coupled-wave approach, taking into consideration the photoinduced change in the refractive index of the recording medium. The cases of Bragg and off-Bragg reconstruction in Bragg and mixed diffraction are considered. The influence of the higher harmonics of the refractive index modulation profile on the diffraction efficiency is shown.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a study of the coupling between a source and a fibre bundle. A ray trace numerical simulation was used to examine the effects of geometrical and optical parameters of the concentrator and the fibre bundle. We compare the results of the computer program with measurements obtained in the case of a light emitting diode and a single lens.

Notes: Abstract Generalizing the stationary coupled-mode concept, nonstationary field equations for slowly varying field envelopes are derived. These field equations are combined with the equations of motion for the non-linear polarization and the inversion as well yielding a set of coupled differential equations applicable to a variety of nonstationary phenomena in waveguides. Pulse shaping and SIT of pulses interacting with a thin layer of two-level system are considered in detail.

Notes: Abstract An exact analytical approach to the synthesis of the refractive-index profile of dual-mode optical fibres with zero intermodal dispersion is presented, and the computer-aided, trial-and-error synthesis of the optimal profile is described. The synthesis is based on inverse scattering theory. Self-consistency of free potentials corresponding to individual modes was attained by numerical methods. The characteristics of the optical fibres with synthetized profiles were analysed, the optimization constraints were specified, and an optimum profile was found. The results can be used for the design of broadband optical fibres.

Notes: Abstract In order to obtain short tail-free output laser pulses from a TEA CO2 laser, parametric study of the laser operation with CO2/H2 and CO2/He binary gas mixtures containing high CO2 concentrations was carried out. A small scale UV preionized short delay time TEA CO2 laser was employed. In terms of the maximum extractable output pulse energy and power, the more conventional CO2/He gas mixture was found to be inferior in comparison with the CO2/H2 mixture proposed here.

Notes: Abstract Starting from the complete set of Maxwell equations and density matrix equations, we derive approximate expressions for the change of pulse envelope and phase in passing samples composed of homogeneously broadened two level systems. The influence of saturation and phase memory on chirped and chirp-free pulses are discussed with respect to characteristic pulse parameters. The phase memory is found to be responsible for the dispersion of the small signal absorption (amplification), the dispersion of the saturation and the inertia of the atomic systems.

Notes: Abstract A theory of TE mode photon echo in slab waveguides is developed. It is found that the conditions for generation of a photon echo in waveguides can substantially differ from those in bulk material. For the photon echo in waveguides there is an optimum value of the Rabi frequency, and the echo energy does not depend periodically on the Rabi frequency as in the case of bulk material photon echo. Moreover, it is shown that the capability for echo generation is different for different modes. In particular there are several modes in the waveguide which cannot, in principle, generate an echo.

Notes: Abstract An extension of the single-shot second harmonic beam method proposed earlier for picosecond pulse duration measurements is presented for the case of two incident pulses of differing frequencies, durations and transverse sizes. The solution of the wave equation for noncollinear sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal by two Gaussian, spatially limited ultrashort pulses is given. It is shown that the width (τ 1 2 +τ 2 2 )1/2 of the temporal cross-correlation function of the two pulses can be deduced from the spatial energy distribution of the sum frequency beam. The method can be used e.g. in the case of a relatively weak secondary pulse obtained in some nonlinear processes. Preliminary experimental results demonstrating the possibilities offered by the method are presented.

Notes: Abstract Some pecularities of multiwave light diffraction in optically thin and thick phase unslanted gratings have been considered. An approximate solution of the wave equation is derived by the eiconal method. The solution is valid for gratings which are both optically thin and thick. This is verified by comparison of approximate solutions with numerical calculations. A range of parameters is found where the solution gives a reliable result. It has been found that the phase grating has the property of focusing light in planes with a maximum value of refractive index if the grating thickness is close to the focal distance introduced.

Notes: Abstract Taking account of the different frequencies of the amplifier and absorber transitions and also of the pulse centre, equations are established and a closed solution is given for the stationary amplitude and phase of the pulses from a cw dye laser in the colliding pulse mode-locking regime. The results concerning the frequency range of a stable single pulse regime, the pulse duration and the sweep of the instantaneous carrier frequency of the pulse (chirp) give a good description of experimental data and permit an estimation of the conditions for extracavity and intracavity chirp compensation. The advantages of colliding pulse mode-locking are shown to arise from the enhanced pulse energy in the absorber due to the pulse timing, as well as from the coherent interaction of the counterpropagating pulses.

Notes: Abstract For local network applications, inexpensive multimode optical fibres are needed. The Axial-Lateral Plasma Deposition (ALPD) process developed in France is capable of providing low cost fibres. However the index profile needs to be optimized in order to obtain −6 dB bandwidths about 100 MHz km. In the present paper we report the results of an optimization procedure based on ray theory.

Notes: Abstract The spectral and temporal properties of laser light pulses are adequately characterized by the time-dependent spectrum. Response functions are investigated in the frequency as well as in the temporal domain which are suitable for describing the interaction of these pulses with nonstationary (and stationary) systems. The results are applied to physically important systems: the Fabry-Perot étalon, transmission through glass, absorption of molecules, reflection by semiconductors and the optical gate. The conditions are investigated under which the response functions can be measured by applying a square-law detector. An uncertainty relation is formulated for the time-dependent spectrum.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an accurate method for observing fringe movement in a Mach-Zehnder type fibre interferometer. We place a photodetector in each of two interference patterns formed by a half-mirror and waves emitted from single-mode fibres. By applying the output voltages of the detectors to X- and Y-terminals of an oscilloscope, we can observe the fringe movement as a rotation of a bright spot along a Lissajous figure.

Notes: Abstract We employ the propagating beam method (PBM) to study mode coupling in the framework of the local normal modes of planar, two-dimensional, graded-index optical waveguides. In particular, we examine the effects of periodic radial deformations along the axis of a parabolic, graded-index, waveguide and compare our results to those of perturbation theory. This comparison allows us to establish the accuracy of the PBM and to generate an improved version of a frequently cited PBM formalism based on the full scalar wave equation rather than the Fresnel approximation.

Notes: Abstract A simple first-order perturbation approach to study the propagation characteristics of highly elliptical core waveguides is presented. The unperturbed index profile is taken to be a pseudo-rectangular core waveguide for which exact scalar wave modes are known. The method is used to obtain the various propagation characteristics of elliptical core, single mode waveguides. Results for various propagation characteristics obtained by the present analysis agree very well with those reported by other authors obtained by accurate numerical techniques.

Notes: Abstract The spectral evolution in a xenon ion-pumped open dye stream laser was measured and analysed in terms of a theoretical spectro-temporal relation previously derived. Sweep occurs in a 200 ns time scale and simultaneous oscillations of several wavelengths can be achieved by varying laser cavity parameters. Experiments were completely reproduced by assuming that the phenomena can be ascribed to the homogeneous broadening of the laser fluorescent band.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the effective gain on the incident angle of the beams and on the initial beam intensity ratio is studied in the experiment of degenerate two-wave mixing (TWM) in a reflection geometry with photorefractive Bi12GeO20 (BGO) crystals. A saturation value of the effective coupling constant ¦g¦-0.4 cm−1 is obtained. In contrast to TWM operated in the drift mode (i.e. with a nonzero electric field applied to the crystal), for TWM operated in the diffusion mode (zero external electric field) as is our case, beam coupling is reduced by moving the crystal or the interference fringes at a constant speed. At high moving speeds, complete beam decoupling can be reached. A comparison between the theoretical and measured dependence of the effective gain on the moving speed is also made. Using this technique, complete isolation of two intersecting coherent beams inside a nonlinear medium can be achieved.

Notes: Abstract Monomode optical fibres of very low intrinsic linear and circular birefringence have been developed for use in polarimetric optical fibre sensors, most notably the fibre optic current sensor. The polarization of light travelling along such fibres is known to be modified by external stress applied to the fibre. In this paper it is shown that the polarization state may also be rotated if the path of the fibre is bent in a nonplanar curve. A theory is developed which enables the effect to be quantified and the results are shown to agree with some measurements on a fibre bent into a helix.

Notes: Abstract Comparative spectral attenuation measurements on a graded-index fibre have been perfomed by nine participants, covering the range 700–1800 nm. Details of measurement equipment and techniques are being reported. Since the attenuation of a graded-index fibre depends on the energy distribution launched into the fibre, only careful control of this parameter leads to comparable results. A method was developed to check the energy distribution in the fibre over a broad spectral range. By this method agreement of attenuation values to within ± 5% from 800 to 1500 nm has been achieved. This is about half of the deviation found in other comparison measurements which are usually restricted to one or two wavelengths.

Notes: Abstract The performance characteristics of semiconductor optical bistable Fabry-Perot devices making use of band-gap resonant nonlinearities will be significantly altered when the excess carrier recombination is density-dependent. This paper analyses the effects of radiative and Auger recombination processes in some practical etalon configurations. Optical bistability is, in general, more difficult to achieve under these conditions but suitable cavity design can significantly reduce the minimum incident intensity required.

Notes: Abstract For data rates above 100 Mbits s−1 multimode optical fibre systems are generally modal dispersion rather than loss limited and some form of equalization is highly desirable. In this paper a new strategy for the optimum design of an equalized receiver is introduced with the aim of maximizing the repeater spacing. Linear and nonlinear equalizers are briefly reviewed and their relative merits discussed. In the receiver design, Poisson signal statistics and additive Gaussian noise are considered. A new upper bound on the bit error rate which allows an adequate accuracy is proposed. Results obtained for 140 and 560 Mbits s−1 show a noticeable increase of the repeater spacing when the proposed design strategy is introduced.

Notes: Abstract Optical equalization was suggested as a means for increasing the bandwidth of optical fibre communication links when non-optimal graded-index fibre profiles are available. In this paper it is shown that by proper choice of the length as well as of the index of the compensating fibre one can significantly increase the bandwidth capability of the link. An upper limit of this improvement is derived, which is much larger than that obtained with alternating fibres of equal lengths.

    Notes: Abstract We study the mode coupling among the local normal modes of couplers formed from planar parabolic graded-index tapered optical waveguides with the propagating beam method. Our results indicate that couplers whose radiia (z) depend on axial length as $$a {\text{(}}z{\text{) = }}a{\text{ }} - {\text{ }}be^{ - cz^2 } , z〈 \Lambda /2, a {\text{(}}z{\text{)}} = a - be^{ - c(z - \Lambda )^2 } , z 〉 \Lambda /2$$ , have many desirable properties not possessed by other couplers.

Notes: Abstract The optical injection sensitivity of twin-stripe lasers has been characterized in terms of an extinction ratio whose value has been calculated as a function of optical injection power. It is shown that significant changes in the lasing field intensity of the device may be achieved using injected optical power comparable to the output of twin-stripe lasers. The effects described are seen to be relevant to a prediction of optically induced bistability made in an earlier work.

Notes: Abstract Multiple second harmonic generation in which the generated second harmonic radiation is filtered out at each stage is studied in this paper. Both classical and quantum equations describing this process are derived, and it is shown that multiple second harmonic generation in thin nonlinear plates acts in the same way as the two-photon absorption process. A closed classical solution for stochastic photon number is found and, for chaotic input radiation, the mean photon number and the mean quadratic fluctuation (variance) of the integrated intensity in the fundamental radiation are calculated. It is shown that the variance of the intensity systematically decreases in the course of the process and, thus, the statistical distribution of the fundamental radiation approaches the coherent state from the point of view of classical theory.

Notes: Abstract The speckle pattern observed at the output end of a multimode fibre is closely related to the modal noise. In this paper, the average contrast of the speckle pattern is studied as a function of the radial position in the output end plane for three kinds of misalignment of the incident beam, i.e. defocusing, axial misalignment and angular misalignment. It is found that a variation of the speckle contrast is very sensitive to all kinds of misalignment of the incident beam and that its varying form strongly depends on the kind of misalignment of the incident beam. The speckle contrast at the centre of the output end plane is also examined as a function of the magnitude of misalignment. It is found that the contrast increases from a minimum value in the correct alignment to a certain saturated value with an increase of misalignment.

Notes: Abstract For the TEM00 mode in a near-hemispherical resonator with variable mode-selecting aperture, we have investigated the diffraction losses versus mirror spacing. The experiments are done with a low gain 633 nm He-Ne laser and two situations are considered. At first the aperture is located at the concave mirror and the experimental values agree very well with those computed by Li for a passive cavity. Then the aperature is placed near the active medium and discrepancies are observed between the experimental results and the proposals of various authors.

Notes: Abstract Mode degeneration and mode conversion in multimode optical fibres are the main subjects of this work. In particular it is shown how fluctuations of the core shape can cause a rapid degeneration among the modes with the same azimuthal mode number. This allows a rigorous single variable approach to the second problem obtaining evident simplifications. The formalism proposed is applied to the study of mode distribution in the general case of microbending, of core-radius fluctuations in fibres with power law profiles and for simultaneous presence of microbending and ellipticity in parabolic fibres with differential mode attenuation.

Notes: Abstract Often one is confronted with recognizing objects of given shape but arbitrary orientation. Matched filters then fail to work. To overcome this obstacle circularly symmetric filters have been designed. The basic principle of such orientation independent filters (OIF) can be interpreted as a phase compensation filter approach. They turn out to be highly sensitive to any shape variations. These filters are easy to produce for many applications.

Notes: Abstract It has been shown theoretically that the temperature coefficient of the oscillation wavelength in semiconductor lasers can be reduced to zero by coupling an external cavity whose optical length decreases with temperature. Here are described two types of temperature compensated coupled cavity (TC3) diode lasers and their properties calculated in the steady state. In such devices an interference effect due to multi-cavities is expected to cause unstable mode hopping behaviour, but it was found to be settled by choosing an adequate external cavity length.

Notes: Abstract The output shape of an electric pulse, which traverses the gap of a fast optoelectronic semiconductor switching device, is influenced by the transit time of the pulse. This dependence as well as the use of transit-time effects for pulse shortening are studied. To this end in the present paper optical and electrical time-dependent properties of the central unit, I.e. the laser-excited semiconductor, and the external passive electric elements and sources are considered and a time-variant telegraphic equation obeying appropriate boundary conditions is established. Numerical solutions for physically important cases are calculated and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The intensity variation of a speckle pattern on the exit end face of graded-index multimode fibres with a misaligned fibre-to-fibre joint is experimentally studied from its first-order statistics of the average contrast and the probability density function for two different kinds of longitudinal and axial misalignments. It is found that the speckle contrast varies as a function of the radial position with a peak which shifts towards the periphery of the speckle pattern with an increase of the joint loss. A varying form of the speckle contrast also depends on the type of misalignment. The probability density function of the speckle intensity variation is also found to vary as a function of the radial position but to scarcely vary as a function of the joint loss.

Notes: Abstract The wavelength of the longitudinal modes of a stripe geometry DH laser excited by current pulses is shifted according to the variation of the optical power. The magnitude of the spectral shift and the different form of these patterns are due to the mutual influence of individual modes. The time-varying carrier concentration gives rise to a time-dependent (effective) refractive index which alters the resonance condition for the modes. The spectral broadening of the modes, spanning nearly one mode separation, is due to the spectral shift of the modes which in turn depend on the variation of the emitted power. The longitudinal modes are sequentially excited because the gain profile changes its wavelength position with varying carrier concentration.

Notes: Abstract The transmission of a light pulse through a dye solution is determined by its energy density if the pulse duration is short compared to the absorption recovery time. The energy transmission measurement allows the determination of the pulse energy. Simultaneous measurement of energy transmission and input pulse peak intensity makes it possible to calculate the pulse duration.
