Notes: In this paper we study the validation of the new formulation (potential-stream vector) of the steady Euler equations in 2-D/3-D transonic lifting regime flow. This approach, which is based on the Helmholtz decomposition of a velocity vector field, is designed to extend the potential approximation of Euler equations for severe situations such as high transonic or rotational subsonic flows. Different results computed by a fixed point algorithm on the stream vector correction are shown and discussed by comparing them with those obtained by the full potential approach.

Notes: New fundamental solutions which automatically satisfy boundary conditions at the interfaces of an elastic plate perfectly bonded to two elastic halfspaces are implemented in a 3-D boundary element method (BEM) for crack problems. The BEM features a new integration scheme for highly singular kernels. The capability is achieved through a part analytic and part numerical integration procedure, such that the analytic part of the integration is similar for all slip/opening variations, ‘Part-through’ elliptic cracks in an elastic plate with traction-free surfaces are analysed and the stress intensity factor (SIF) values along the crack front are found to compare favourably with widely accepted numerically obtained SIF results by Raju and Newman.1

Notes: Based on the asymptotic behaviour of the fundamental solution for 3-D elasticity problems, this paper presents an infinite boundary element model (IBEM) and its interpolation form. By using the analytical solution for half-space under a vertical loading, excellent accuracy of this model has been verified. As an engineering application, the infinite foundation of a monolithic gravity dam was modelled by IBEM and the dam itself by normal BEM, and the displacement and stress distributions of the dam were analysed. It was concluded that large structure and foundation problems can be solved by this coupling system with the advantage of having fewer degrees of freedom and less data preparations. The results also clearly show the great improvement of the 3-D model for critical stresses of the dam over the 2-D plane model for narrow canyons having a width-height ratio less than 2·4. Thus, a more economical cross-section for dams can be achieved by 3-D analysis.

Notes: A unified method for continuum shape design sensitivity analysis and optimal design of mechanical components is developed. A domain method of shape design sensitivity analysis that uses the material derivative concept of continuum mechanics is employed. For numerical implementation of shape optimal design, parameterization of the boundary shape of mechanical components is defined and illustrated using a Bezier surface. In shape design problems, nodal points of the finite element model move as the shape changes. A method of automatic regridding to account for shape change has been developed using a design velocity field in the physical domain that obeys the governing equilibrium equations of the elastic solid. For numerical implementation of the continuum shape design sensitivity analysis and automatic regridding, an established finite element analysis code is used. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method developed, shape design optimization of a main engine bearing cap is carried out as an example.

Notes: A finite element method coupled with the method of characteristics is applied to the problem of convective-dispersive transport with non-equilibrium reaction. Convective terms are calculated using moving particles together with influence element meshes for particle tracking, whereas dispersion terms are calculated by means of finite element techniques. The contribution from the term of non-equilibrium reaction is incorporated into the algebraic equations by the use of analytical solutions to the equation of non-equilibrium reaction for each time step and extended Simpson's numerical integrations.Comparison of the numerical results from the proposed procedure with analytical solutions to the simultaneous partial differential equations shows good agreement for the wide spectrum ranging from dispersion- to convection-dominated transport with various reaction parameters.

Notes: This paper proposes a basis change strategy within the reduced gradient method for optimization under linear constraints. It ensures a non-singular basis matrix at every iteration. The same strategy can reliably be used within the generalized reduced gradient method for optimization under non-linear constraints. This method is applied to the minimum weight design of large structures under displacement and stress constraints, exploiting the sparsity of the constraint Jacobian matrix.

Notes: The numerical strategies employed in the evaluation of singular integrals existing in the Cauchy principal value (CPV) sense are, undoubtedly, one of the key aspects which remarkably affect the performance and accuracy of the boundary element method (BEM).Thus, a new procedure, based upon a bi-cubic co-ordinate transformation and oriented towards the numerical evaluation of both the CPV integrals and some others which contain different types of singularity is developed. Both the ideas and some details involved in the proposed formulae are presented, obtaining rather simple and-attractive expressions for the numerical quadrature which are also easily embodied into existing BEM codes. Some illustrative examples which assess the stability and accuracy of the new formulae are included.

Notes: The presented solver uses the Crout L-U decomposition method. Disk memory space requirements are reduced to an absolute minimum and disk input-output is spectacularly limited. Very extensive pivoting improves numerical accuracy and stability. Experimental test runs prove the overall efficiency of the solver.
