Notes: Creep experiments on two thermoplastics at constant values of tensile stress, temperature, and relative humidity previously reported for 132,000 h were continued to about 230,000 h. An equation of the form ∊ = ∊o + ∊+tn was used to predict the creep, where t is time and ∊o, ∊+, and n are constants for a given stress. ∊o, ∊+, and n were determined from the first 1900 h of data and were used to predict the creep to 230,000 h. The subsequent recovery on unloading was predicted using the same equation together with the superposition principle. Also reported are creep and recovery of companion specimens aged for about 98,000 h.

Notes: The effect of rolltrusion, a solid state deformation process, on the three dimensional mechanical properties of several polymers has been measured. Polymers studied included isotactic polypropylene (iPP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and propylene/ethylene block copolymers. It was found that mechanical strength is enhanced triaxially for all these specimens upon rolltrusion. Material stiffness also exhibits 3-D improvement, depending on the polymer type and processing conditions. These new results are discussed in regard to some structural models in the literature.

Notes: A series of polyimides based on 4.,4′-isophthaloyldiphthalic anhydride (IDPA) was prepared and characterized by inherent viscosity, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), solubility, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (ITGA). Film forming, tough, insoluble polyimides were obtained with most of the 11 diamines used for evaluation. Two materials were semicrystalline. Several compositions showed excellent thermooxidative stability by ITGA at 300 and 350°C in air, as compared to Kapton-H (Du Pont) film. The IDPA-m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA) composition, for example, gave a flexible, amorphous film having a Tg of 259°C (identical with LARC-TPI) and insoluble in a wide range of solvents. It is based on a potentially low-cost dianhydride (IDPA) and, unlike LARC-TPI, a low-cost, domestically available diamine which gives a negative Ames test.

Notes: A new boundary element method has been developed for analyzing the flow of sheet molding compound (SMC) during compression molding. The boundary element equations can be used to determine the velocities on the perimeter of the charge. Successive flow front configurations are then generated by a simple explicit updating procedure. This approach was used to predict the flow front progression for elliptical, rectangular, and L-shaped charges. Comparisons with experimental data for elliptical and rectangular charges were encouraging. The fact that it was possible to obtain reasonable agreement for charges with different shapes and thicknesses lends support to the underlying flow model. Furthermore, valuable insight regarding knit line formation was acquired by analyzing the L-shaped charge. Results from the boundary element analysis showed that the initial thickness of the charge has a pronounced effect on knit line development. Even though there is considerable industrial experience in making SMC parts, the important role of charge thickness on knit line formation appears to have been largely overlooked. Prior analyses gave no indication of this effect because they were based on lubrication models that were independent of charge thickness.

Notes: This paper presents the development of the boundary element equations for the compression molding process of isothermal Newtonian fluids. It shows the numerical implementation of the boundary element equations and presents a simple method of carrying out the domain integral present in the governing equations. The results and accuracy of a boundary element simulation are discussed, and the numerical results compared to experimental values.

Notes: An adaptive controller is presented that is able to perform effectively in the presence of nonlinearities and of model uncertainty typical of industrial processes. The controller incorporates a minimum variance part and a caution part. The latter is independent of the estimated model and becomes dominant in the case of a large mismatch between plant and estimated model. Application to a simulated nonlinear continuous stirred-tank reactor demonstrates its effectiveness, even when other adaptive controllers give unsatisfactory performance.
