Notes: 1,2,2,-Trifluorovinyl phenyl ether and 2,3,4,5,6,-pentafluorophenyl 1,2,2-trifluorovinyl ethers have been prepared, and the nucleophilic reactions of the phenoxide and 2,3,4,5-pentafluorophenoxide salts with tetrafluoroethylene have been investigated. In general, it is some-what difficult to control the reaction so as to produce the desired olefinic monomer. Under truly anhydrous conditions and when other sources of active protons are avoided, the olefin is the chief product if excess tetrafluoroethylene is used. The monomer produced is very reactive with phenoxide ions, and the diphenoxyolefins are the chief secondary products. Both monomers failed to polymerize under normal, free radical conditions. With boron trifluoride an oily material was obtained from the trifluorovinyl phenyl ether. High pressure and gamma rays converted both monomers into polymers.

Notes: The process of fluid-particle mass transfer in fixed beds at Reynolds numbers less than 1,000 is viewed in terms of transient molecular diffusion within a boundary layer which is developed and destroyed repeatedly as the fluid journeys through the bed. Literature data support the j factor derived from the premises of the model. The theory predicts a Schmidt number exponent of 2/3 for NSc ≧ 1; however this exponent should approach 1/2 for NSc 〈 1.

Notes: A laboratory investigation was conducted on oil displacement from porous media by the use of either a slug of propane followed by gas or a slug of carbon dioxide followed by water. A comparison was made of the efficiencies of these two solvent flooding processes for petroleum reservoirs. The results of flooding experiments on cores and on scaled pattern models showed the effect, on oil recovery, of type of porous medium, pore geometry, length to width ratio of the flood pattern, fluid viscosities, and miscibility. Oil recoveries of from 60 to 80% of the original oil in place were obtained by these solvent flooding processes as compared with conventional waterflood recoveries of between 35 to 50% on the same cores and linear models. Furthermore these recoveries were obtained with solvent slug sizes of 10 to 30% of a hydrocarbon pore volume, with less solvent being required as the length of the flood path increased. Data showing the relations between mobility ratio and volumetric sweep efficiency for the propane-gas and carbon dioxide water flooding processes for two widely different types of porous medium are included in this paper. It was concluded that in reservoirs where pressure, oil viscosity and composition, and flooding pattern are favorable, either of these solvent flooding processes would give oil recoveries considerably higher than conventional waterflood or gas drive. It was further concluded that this improved recovery would be realized earlier in the life of a flood with carbon dioxide-carbonated water than with propane followed by gas.

Notes: A compound pendulum system has been developed for the measurement and study of the modulus of elasticity and internal damping properties of a viscoelastic specimen through a range of temperatures. An analysis of the apparatus and the essential describing equations are presented. Test results for several materials are presented. In the region of the heat distortion temperature many materials exhibit a sharp peak in their damping characteristics. The modulus of elasticity drops rapidly in this region. Modulus of elasticity results obtained compare favorably with static testing machine data. The compound pendulum system described provides a simple technique for these physical property determinations continuously over a range of temperatures.

Notes: A mathematical model is developed for predicting the mixing characteristics of fixed beds of spheres. The model is based on a two-dimensional network of perfectly stirred tanks. By means of the conventional partial differential equation description of flow in fixed beds, the predictions of the new model are compared with experimentally observed axial and radial mixing characteristics. The introduction of a capacitance effect is shown to enable the model to predict the abnormally low axial Peclet numbers observed in liquid-phase systems in the unsteady state. The mathematical model developed in the first part of this paper is extended to cover chemical reaction in a cylindrical fixed bed of porous catalyst spheres. The mathematical effect on the model of various controlling rate steps, nonconstant property values, and multiple, non-first-order reactions is discussed. After the general discussion a simplified system is chosen to indicate the practical advantages of the model. A single, first-order, irreversible, exothermic reaction is considered to proceed according to an effectively homogeneous rate expression, which varies exponentially with the inverse of absolute temperature. Both steady state and transient cases are calculated for a reactor, the walls of which are maintained at constant temperature.

Notes: A digital computer model of the adiabatic-fixed bed catalytic reactor is developed which includes axial dispersion of heat and mass, interparticle heat and mass transport, and intraparticle diffusion of reacting species. The influence of these transport processes upon conversion and yield is discussed. The model is readily extended to nonisothermal, nonadiabatic cases in the absence of radial gradients. The technique of computer solution avoids the inherent instability problem associated with explicit techniques as applied to flux boundary condition problems which involve flow, diffusion, and reaction.

Notes: A corresponding-states correlation for the liquid-state properties of higher molecular-weight substances is presented which contains as reducing parameters the readily measurable (and correlatable) energy vaporization and van der Waals volume instead of the often inaccessible critical constants. One additional parameter characterizing molecular flexibility is introduced.A single curve of the new reduced density ρ* vs. the new reduced temperature T* is shown to represent the atmospheric-pressure-density-temperature relations of paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic hydrocarbons with 10 or more carbon atoms per molecule to within ±1% between their melting and their atmospheric boiling points. The reduced surface tension is shown to be a unique function of ρ± for many compounds, thus permitting prediction of surface tension over wide ranges of temperature. The heat-capacity difference between liquid and vapor proved to be easily correlatable with ρ±. Finally the compression of numerous hydrocarbons proved to be well correlated in terms of T*, ρ±, and P*. Extensive group data for Vw and E° have been assembled in the appendix in order to enable others to use the proposed method without effort.
