    Notes: A fully coupled 1D infinite element for frequency domain analysis of wave propagation problems in unbounded saturated porous media is presented. The element wave propagation function is derived using an analytical solution for Biot's formulation (1962). The effectiveness and the accuracy of the infinite element proposed are demonstrated through a simple wave propagation problem in a semi-infinite soil column subjected to a harmonic surface loading. It is shown that an accurate representation of the problem can be obtained by coupling the conventional finite elements with the proposed infinite element. The accuracy of the solution significantly deteriorates when free or fixed boundary conditions are imposed at the truncated boundary instead of the infinite element. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Because the 20-node solid element of the serendipity family does not fulfil the physical contact requirements properly (the equivalent nodal forces include negative values) a 21-node three-dimensional transient element for the non-linear contact/friction problem is investigated. Construction of the shape functions is described. The proposed transition element is established by adding one node to the top or bottom face of the basic 20-node solid serendipity element for an effective connection between the contact region (21-node elements) and the rest of the structure (20-node elements) with minimum degrees of freedom possible. Comparisons with results calculated for the 3D-contact problem using the combinations of the 8-node element connected to 20-node finite elements prove the high accuracy and overall superiority of the present method. The numerical examples are shown to illustrate the validity and efficiency of the developed technique. The approach may be employed easily in existing computer codes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The paper is devoted to the analysis of two- or three-dimensional contact problems with Coulomb friction and large deformation. The classical approach is based on two minimum principles or two variational inequalities: the first for unilateral contact and the second for friction. A coupled approach using only one principle or one inequality is presented. This new approach allows us to extend the notion of normality law to dissipative behaviours with a non-associated flow rule, such as surface friction. Non-differentiable contact potentials are regularized by means of the augmented Lagrangian method. Using the C++ language, an object-oriented finite element database is created, which allows us to implement the contact and friction in an existing code in a very simple and neat way. Numerical examples are carried out in many difficult cases such as shock absorber and three-dimensional contact. The numerical results prove that this approach is robust and efficient concerning numerical stability.

    Description: A typical intracratonic basin--the Northeast German Depression--has been studied with special regard to its present thermal structure and to its early evolution. Today the basin is characterized by a positive thermal anomaly. Three dimensional modelling, in connection with a detailed structural model, indicates that the thermal anomaly can mainly be attributed to the low conductivities of the sediment filling. However, some modifications result from a variety of salt structures. Basin formation has been studied in terms of sediment accumulation and by subsidence modelling with various methods. The initial phase requires lithosphere and crustal thinning, perhaps by different amounts vertically and regionally, and if accompanied by a strong volcanism. The initial phase then is followed by long term thermal subsidence, associated with an extension of the basin and a sedimentary onlap pattern. Initial stretching rates are about 1.2.-1.3. at the basin centre and vanish at its margin. The basin, therefore, lacks a typical rifting phase. These observations will be complemented and discussed in terms of three dimensional thermal subsidence models which shed light onto the growth of the basin during its thermal evolution. The models help to explain the low stretching rates at the basin's borders. In addition, the models allow to study the thermally induced strains and stresses which can be used to deduce the possible location of fault zones and rheological properties of the crust. Finally, some problems specific to three-dimensional models will be briefly discussed.
