Notes: Linearization of the non-linear systems arising from fully implicit schemes in computational fluid dynamics often result in a large sparse non-symmetric linear system. Practical experience shows that these linear systems are ill-conditioned if a higher than first-order spatial discretization scheme is used. To solve these linear systems, an efficient multilevel iterative method, the α-GMRES method, is proposed which incorporates a diagonal preconditioning with a damping factor α so that a balanced fast convergence of the inner GMRES iteration and the outer damping loop can be achieved. With this simple and efficient preconditioning and damping of the matrix, the resulting method can be effectively parallelized. The parallelization maintains the effectiveness of the original scheme due to the algorithm equivalence of the sequential and the parallel versions.

Notes: Many methods have been proposed to model joints in rocks or the interface between soil and a structure. Many analysts have reported numerical problems when using zero thickness interface elements while others have presented satisfactory results without comment of such difficulties. The numerical behaviour of zero thickness interface elements is further investigated in this paper. Some simple examples illustrate the application of interface elements to practical situations and highlight the numerical difficulties that may be encountered. Both ill-conditioning of the stiffness matrix and high stress gradients were found to cause numerical instability. Ill-conditioning can be reduced by careful selection of the size of the 2D elements adjacent to the interface. The problem of steep stress gradients is entirely one of inadequate mesh design. Contrary to other reports, this paper shows that the Newton-Cotes integration scheme has no benefit over Gaussian integration.Analyses of a retaining wall using interface elements confirm the analytical values of active and passive earth pressure coefficients which are commonly used in analysis and design of retaining walls.

Notes: To perform non-linear structural analysis including large displacements and rotations requires evaluation of the non-linear equilibrium equations. A quadratically converging, fixed-point iteration scheme, referred to as the work-increment-control solution method, is presented to iteratively evaluate the non-linear algebraic equations. The work-increment-control method is superior, in many respects, to other published solution strategies.

Notes: For the single-step time-integration algorithm formulated by Zienkiewicz et al., a weight function of the form tr is posed. The weight parameters θ are found through a simple formula for a range of values r. These are used to integrate three numerical formulations of the non-linear dynamics equation for a planar pendulum. Comparisons with existing integration methods show that, for r non-positive, the r-methods are accurate, stable and very competitive. Results are dependent both upon r and the formulation. Useful ranges for r are discussed.

Notes: In this paper we describe how wavelets may be used to solve partial differential equations. These problems are currently solved by techniques such as finite differences, finite elements and multi-grid. The wavelet method, however, offers several advantages over traditional methods. Wavelets have the ability to represent functions at different levels of resolution, thereby providing a logical means of developing a hierarchy of solutions. Furthermore, compactly supported wavelets (such as those due to Daubechies1) are localized in space, which means that the solution can be refined in regions of high gradient, e.g. stress concentrations, without having to regenerate the mesh for the entire problem. In order to demonstrate the wavelet technique, we consider the one-dimensional counterpart of Helmholtz's equation. By comparison with a simple finite difference solution to this problem with periodic boundary conditions, we show how a wavelet technique may be efficiently developed. Dirichlet boundary conditions are then imposed, using the capacitance matrix method described by Proskurowski and Widlund2 and others. The convergence rates of the wavelet solutions are examined and they are found to compare extremely favourably to the finite difference solutions. Preliminary investigations also indicate that the wavelet technique is a strong contender to the finite element method, at least for problems with simple geometries.

Notes: By using the Mellin transform, a general solution is obtained for the total stresses and pore pressure distribution in an infinite wedge under fairly general conditions of loading. The results for the particular case in which each surface is subjected to static sinusoidal pressures are given in an explicit form. The infinite integrals can be evaluated by numerical integration methods. This analytical method is verified by different cases. The results of this study could be used to determine the total stresses and pore pressures induced by a wave on a sloping seabed.

Notes: An analytical solution for the wave-induced soil response is developed for a seabed of finite thickness subject to a three-dimensional (3-D) wave system produced by two intersecting waves of equal properties. These 3-D exact solutions for the pore pressure and effective stresses, proposed for a non-cohesive soil matrix of finite depth in a homogeneously unsaturated and anisotropic condition, are readily reducible to the limiting two-dimensional cases of progressive and standing waves, for which no explicit solutions are available for finite thickness. The effects of soil isotropy, degree of saturation, seabed thickness and grain size on the wave-induced pore pressure are discussed in detail. The explicit solutions presented in this study for the wave-induced pore pressure and effective stresses should benefit the laboratory experiments and field monitoring programs carried out in soil of finite depth.

Notes: This paper presents a Wave Equation Model (WEM) to solve advection dominant Advection-Diffusion (A-D) equation. It is known that the operator-splitting approach is one of the effective methods to solve A-D equation. In the advection step the numerical solution of the advection equation is often troubled by numerical dispersion or numerical diffusion. Instead of directly solving the first-order advection equation, the present wave equation model solves a second-order equivalent wave equation whose solution is identical to that of the first-order advection equation. Numerical examples of 1-D and 2-D with constant flow velocities and varying flow velocities are presented. The truncation error and stability condition of 1-D wave equation model is given. The Fourier analysis of WEM is carried out. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the exact solutions. The wave equation model introduces very little numerical oscillation. The numerical diffusion introduced by WEM is cancelled by inverse numerical diffusion introduced by WEM as well. It is found that the numerical solutions of WEM are not sensitive to Courant number under stability constraint. The computational cost is economical for practical applications.

Notes: The paper is concerned with the solution of non-linear wave distribution in structural fibre members subjected to dynamic kinematic forcing. The development of reliable and efficient techniques for numerical handling of wave distribution based on the application of combined finite-element and transfer matrix approaches is emphasized. Illustrative numerical solutions are presented.

Notes: The influence of the location of the outflow computational boundary on the unsteady incompressible flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 100 is examined. The vorticity-streamfunction formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is used in all computations. Two types of outflow boundary conditions are subjected to a series of tests in which the domain length is gradually reduced. The traction-free condition performs well in most cases and allows the outflow boundary to be located as close as 6.5 cylinder diameters from the body. The other boundary condition type is not as forgiving, but has the advantage of being simpler to implement and can still provide reasonably accurate solutions. It is also observed that both condition types can influence the flow field strongly and globally when the boundary is brought closer than 2.5 diameters from the body. In such cases the temporal periodicity of the solution is lost.
